By considering a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4ϕ_3 summation, we prove a weighted partition theorem involving odd parts differing by >= 4. A two parameter refinement of this theorem is then deduced from a quartic reformulation of Goellnitz's (Big) theorem due to Alladi, and this leads to a two parameter extension of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions. Finally, refinements of certain modular identities of Alladi connected to the Goellnitz-Gordon series are shown to follow from a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4ϕ_3 summation.
Applying the triplicate form of the extended Gould--Hsu inverse series relations to Dougall's summation theorem for the well--poised $_7F_6$-series, we establish, from the dual series, several interesting Ramanujan--like infinite series expressions for $π^2$ and $π^{\pm1}$ with convergence rate "$-\frac{1}{27}$".
The Fibonacci number is the residue of a rational function, from which follows that Fibonacci number summation identities can be derived with the integral representation method, a method also used to derive combinatorial identities. A number of weighted generalized Fibonacci number summation identities are derived this way. From these identities some infinite series, generating functions and convolution identities are obtained. In addition, some weighted generalized Fibonacci number summation identities with binomial coefficients are derived. Many examples of both types of summation identities…
Two new generalized Fibonacci number summation identities are stated and proved, and two other new generalized Fibonacci number summation identities are derived from these, of which two special cases are already known in literature.
Using a property of the q-shifted factorial, an identity for q-binomial coefficients is proved, which is used to derive the formulas for the q-binomial coefficient for negative arguments. The result is in agreement with an earlier paper about the normal binomial coefficient for negative arguments. Some new q-binomial summation identities are derived, and the formulas for negative arguments transform some of these summation identities into each other. One q-binomial summation identity is transformed into a new q-binomial summation identity.
We give new proofs for certain bilateral basic hypergeometric summation formulas using the symmetries of the corresponding series. In particular, we present a proof for Bailey's $_3ψ_3$ summation formula as an application. We also prove a multiple series analogue of this identity by considering hyperoctahedral group symmetries of higher ranks.
Unlike in the case of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers, there is a paucity of literature dealing with summation identities involving the Padovan and Perrin numbers. In this paper, we derive various summation identities for these numbers, including binomial and double binomial identities. Our results derive from the rich algebraic properties exhibited by the zeros of the characteristic polynomial of the Padovan/Perrin sequence.
We derive a new Fibonacci identity. This single identity subsumes important known identities such as those of Catalan, Ruggles, Halton and others, as well as standard general identities found in the books by Vajda, Koshy and others. We also derive several binomial and ordinary summation identities arising from this identity; in particular we obtain a generalization of Halton's general Fibonacci identity.
In terms of the derivative operator and three hypergeometric series identities, several interesting summation formulas involving generalized harmonic numbers are established.
An elliptic $BC_n$ generalization of the classical two parameter Bailey Lemma is proved, and a basic one parameter $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma is obtained as a limiting case. Several summation and transformation formulas associated with the root system $BC_n$ are proved as applications, including a $_6ϕ_5$ summation formula, a generalized Watson transformation and an unspecialized Rogers--Selberg identity. The last identity is specialized to give an infinite family of multilateral Rogers--Selberg identities. Standard determinant evaluations are then used to compute $B_n$ and $D_n$ generalizations of t…
Based on some combinatorial identities arising from symbolic summation, we extend two supercongruences on partial sums of hypergeometric series, which were originally conjectured by Guo and Schlosser and recently confirmed by Jana and Kalita.
In terms of the derivative operator and Watson-type $_3F_2$-series identities, three families of summation formulae involving generalized harmonic numbers are established.
Recently, Chen, Hou and Jin used both Abel's lemma on summation by parts and Zeilberger's algorithm to generate recurrence relations for definite summations. Meanwhile, they proposed the Abel-Gosper method to evaluate some indefinite sums involving harmonic numbers. In this paper, we use the Abel-Gosper method to prove an identity involving the generalized harmonic numbers. Special cases of this result reduce to many famous identities. In addition, we use both Abel's lemma and the WZ method to verify and to discover identities involving harmonic numbers. Many interesting examples are also pres…
We prove a general alternate circular summation formula of theta functions, which implies a great deal of theta-function identities. In particular, we recover several identities in Ramanujan's Notebook from this identity. We also obtain two formulaes for $(q;q)_\infty^{2n}$.
By means of the derivative operator and Whipple-type $_3F_2$-series identities, two families of summation formulae involving generalized harmonic numbers are established.
In this article, we derive some identities for multilateral basic hypergeometric series associated to the root system A_n. First, we apply Ismail's argument to an A_n q-binomial theorem of Milne and derive a new A_n generalization of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation theorem. From this new A_n 1-psi-1 summation and from an A_n 1-psi-1 summation of Gustafson we deduce two lemmas for deriving simple A_n generalizations of bilateral basic hypergeometric series identities. These lemmas are closely related to the Macdonald identities for A_n. As samples for possible applications of these lemmas, we pro…
Several new identities for elliptic hypergeometric series are proved. Remarkably, some of these are elliptic analogues of identities for basic hypergeometric series that are balanced but not very-well-poised.
The initial purpose of this paper is to provide a combinatorial proof of the minor summation formula of Pfaffians based on the lattice path method. There we related Plücker relations with the minor summation formula of Pfaffians to simplify its proof by lattice paths. The second aim is to find a various applications of the minor summation formula. First we studied a variant of the Sundquist formula established in J. Alg. Combin. {\bf 5} (1996). Next we gave a simple proof of Kawanaka's formula concerning a $q$-series identity involving Schur functions in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 36} (1999). We also…
We generalize Dahmen-Micchelli deconvolution formula for Box splines with parameters. Our proof is based on identities for Poisson summation of rational functions with poles on hyperplanes.
Recently Féray, Goulden and Lascoux gave a proof of a new hook summation formula for unordered increasing trees by means of a generalization of the Prüfer code for labelled trees and posed the problem of finding a bijection between weighted increasing trees and Cayley trees. We give such a bijection, providing an answer to the problem posed by Féray, Goulden and Lascoux as well as showing a combinatorial connection to the theory of tree volumes defined by Kelmans. In addition we give two simple proofs of the hook summation formula. As an application we describe how the hook summation formula g…
We give elementary derivations of several classical and some new summation and transformation formulae for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. For purpose of motivation, we review our previous simple proof ("A simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation", Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear) of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Using a similar but different method, we now give elementary derivations of some transformations for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. In particular, these include M. Jackson's very-well-poised 8-psi-8 transformation, a very-well-poised …
The classical hypergeometric summation theorems are exploited to derive several striking identities on harmonic numbers including those discovered recently by Paule and Schneider (2003).
We use $q$-binomial theorem to prove three new polynomial identities involving $q$-trinomial coefficients. We then use summation formulas for the $q$-trinomial coefficients to convert our identities into another set of three polynomial identities, which imply Capparelli's partition theorems when the degree of the polynomial tends to infinity. This way we also obtain an interesting new result for the sum of the Capparelli's products. We finish this paper by proposing an infinite hierarchy of polynomial identities.
We prove two new summation formulae of Hall-Littlewood polynomials over partitions into bounded parts and derive some new multiple $q$-identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type.
We give several families of polynomials which are related by Eulerian summation operators. They satisfy interesting combinatorial properties like being integer-valued at integral points. This involves nearby-symmetries and a recursion for the values at half-integral points. We also obtain identities for super Catalan numbers.
We use both Abel's lemma on summation by parts and Zeilberger's algorithm to find recurrence relations for definite summations. The role of Abel's lemma can be extended to the case of linear difference operators with polynomial coefficients. This approach can be used to verify and discover identities involving harmonic numbers and derangement numbers. As examples, we use the Abel-Zeilberger algorithm to prove the Paule-Schneider identities, the Apery-Schmidt-Strehl identity, Calkin's identity and some identities involving Fibonacci numbers.
We present a systematic method for proving nonterminating basic hypergeometric identities. Assume that $k$ is the summation index. By setting a parameter $x$ to $xq^n$, we may find a recurrence relation of the summation by using the $q$-Zeilberger algorithm. This method applies to almost all nonterminating basic hypergeometric summation formulas in the book of Gasper and Rahman. Furthermore, by comparing the recursions and the limit values, we may verify many classical transformation formulas, including the Sears-Carlitz transformation, transformations of the very-well-poised $_8ϕ_7$ series, t…
We present a method to prove hypergeometric double summation identities. Given a hypergeometric term $F(n,i,j)$, we aim to find a difference operator $ L=a_0(n) N^0 + a_1(n) N^1 +...+a_r(n) N^r $ and rational functions $R_1(n,i,j),R_2(n,i,j)$ such that $ L F = Δ_i (R_1 F) + Δ_j (R_2 F)$. Based on simple divisibility considerations, we show that the denominators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ must possess certain factors which can be computed from $F(n, i,j)$. Using these factors as estimates, we may find the numerators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ by guessing the upper bounds of the degrees and solving systems of l…
Finding an Andrews--Gordon type generating function identity for a linked partition ideal is difficult in most cases. In this paper, we will handle this problem in the setting of graph theory. With the generating function of directed graphs with an ``empty'' vertex, we then turn our attention to a $q$-difference system. This $q$-difference system eventually yields a factorization problem of a special type of column functional vectors involving $q$-multi-summations. Finally, using a recurrence relation satisfied by certain $q$-multi-summations, we are able to provide non-computer-assisted proof…
In this paper, by the method of comparing coefficients and the inverse technique, we establish the corresponding variate forms of two identities of Andrews and Yee for mock theta functions, as well as a few allied but unusual $q$-series identities. Among includes a new Bailey pair from which a product formula of two ${}_2ϕ_1$ series is derived. Further, we focus on two finite $q$-series summations arising from Andrews and Yee's mock theta function identities and expound some recurrence relations and transformation formulas behind them.
In order to better understand the structure of classical rings of invariants for binary forms, Dixmier proposed, as a conjectural homogeneous system of parameters, an explicit collection of invariants previously studied by Hilbert. We generalize Dixmier's collection and show that a particular subfamily is algebraically independent. Our proof relies on showing certain alternating sums of products of binomial coefficients are nonzero. Along the way we provide a very elementary proof à la Racah, namely, only using the Chu-Vandermonde Theorem, for Dixon's Summation Theorem. We also provide explici…
We revisit old conjectures of Fermat and Euler regarding representation of integers by binary quadratic form x^2+5y^2. Making use of Ramanujan's_1ψ_1 summation formula we establish a new Lambert series identity for \sum_{n,m=-\infty}^{\infty} q^{n^2+5m^2}. Conjectures of Fermat and Euler are shown to follow easily from this new formula. But we don't stop there. Employing various formulas found in Ramanujan's notebooks and using a bit of ingenuity we obtaina collection of new Lambert series for certain infinite products associated with quadratic forms such as x^2+6y^2, 2x^2+3y^2, x^2+15y^2, 3x^…
Sums of the form $\sum_{N_m=q}^{n}{\cdots \sum_{N_1=q}^{N_2}{a_{(m);N_m}\cdots a_{(1);N_1}}}$ where the $a_{(k);N_k}$'s are same or distinct sequences appear quite often in mathematics. We will refer to them as recurrent sums. In this paper, we introduce a variety of formulas to help manipulate and work with this type of sums. We begin by developing variation formulas that allow the variation of a recurrent sum of order $m$ to be expressed in terms of lower order recurrent sums. We then proceed to derive theorems (which we will call inversion formulas) which show how to interchange the order o…
By applying multiplicate forms of the Carlitz inverse series relations to the $q$-Pfaff-Saalsch{ü}tz summation theorem, we establish twenty five nonterminating $q$-series identities with several of them serving as $q$-analogues of infinite series expressions for $π$ and $1/π$, including some typical ones discovered by Ramanujan (1914) and Guillera.
We present a new matrix inverse with applications in the theory of bilateral basic hypergeometric series. Our matrix inversion result is directly extracted from an instance of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation theorem, and involves two infinite matrices which are not lower-triangular. We combine our bilateral matrix inverse with known basic hypergeometric summation theorems to derive, via inverse relations, several new identities for bilateral basic hypergeometric series.
We survey the applications of an elementary identity used by Euler in one of his proofs of the Pentagonal Number Theorem. Using a suitably reformulated version of this identity that we call Euler's Telescoping Lemma, we give alternate proofs of all the key summation theorems for terminating Hypergeometric Series and Basic Hypergeometric Series, including the terminating Binomial Theorem, the Chu--Vandermonde sum, the Pfaff--Saalch\" utz sum, and their $q$-analogues. We also give a proof of Jackson's $q$-analog of Dougall's sum, the sum of a terminating, balanced, very-well-poised $_8ϕ_7$ sum. …
