An elliptic $BC_n$ generalization of the classical two parameter Bailey Lemma is proved, and a basic one parameter $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma is obtained as a limiting case. Several summation and transformation formulas associated with the root system $BC_n$ are proved as applications, including a $_6ϕ_5$ summation formula, a generalized Watson transformation and an unspecialized Rogers--Selberg identity. The last identity is specialized to give an infinite family of multilateral Rogers--Selberg identities. Standard determinant evaluations are then used to compute $B_n$ and $D_n$ generalizations of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities in terms of determinants of theta functions. Starting with the $BC_n$ $_6ϕ_5$ summation formula, a similar program is followed to prove an infinite family of $D_n$ Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorems.
Recently, Garvan obtained two-variable Hecke-Rogers identities for three universal mock theta functions $g_2(z;q),\,g_3(z;q),\,K(z;q)$ by using basic hypergeometric functions, and he proposed a problem of finding direct proofs of these identities by using Bailey pair technology. In this paper, we give proofs of Garvan's identities by applying Bailey's transform with the conjugate Bailey pair of Warnaar and three Bailey pairs deduced from two special cases of $_6ψ_6$ given by Slater. In particular, we obtain a compact form of two-variable Hecke-Rogers identity related to $g_3(z;q)$, which imply…
The Bailey lemma is a famous tool to prove Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. We use shifted versions of the Bailey lemma to derive $m$-versions of multisum Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. We also apply this method to the Well-Poised Bailey lemma and obtain a new extension of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
It is known that $q$-orthogonal polynomials play an important role in the field of $q$-series and special functions. During studying Dyson's "favorite" identity of Rogers--Ramanujan type, Andrews pointed out that the classical orthogonal polynomials also have surprising applications in the world of $q$. By inserting Chebyshev polynomials of the third and the fourth kinds into Bailey pairs, Andrews derived a family of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities and also results related to mock theta functions and Hecke--type series. In this paper, by constructing a new Bailey pair involving Chebyshev pol…
A multilateral Bailey Lemma is proved, and multiple analogues of the Rogers--Ramanujan identities and Euler's Pentagonal Theorem are constructed as applications. The extreme cases of the Andrews--Gordon identities are also generalized using the multilateral Bailey Lemma where their final form is written in terms of determinants of theta functions.
Using new $q$-functions recently introduced by Hatayama et al. and by (two of) the authors, we obtain an A_2 version of the classical Bailey lemma. We apply our result, which is distinct from the A_2 Bailey lemma of Milne and Lilly, to derive Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities for characters of the W_3 algebra.
Versions of Bailey's lemma which change the base from q to q^2 or q^3 are given. Iterates of these versions give many new versions of multisum Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We also prove Melzer's conjectures for the Fermionic forms of the supersymmetric analogues of Virasoro characters.
A multidimensional generalization of Bailey's very-well-poised bilateral basic hypergeometric ${}_6ψ_6$ summation formula and its Dougall type ${}_5H_5$ hypergeometric degeneration for $q\to 1$ is studied. The multiple Bailey sum amounts to an extension corresponding to the case of a nonreduced root system of certain summation identities associated to the reduced root systems that were recently conjectured by Aomoto and Ito and proved by Macdonald. By truncation, we obtain multidimensional analogues of the very-well-poised unilateral (basic) hypergeometric Rogers ${}_6ϕ_5$ and Dougall ${}_5F_4…
We present two general finite extensions for each of the two Rogers-Ramanujan identities. Of these one can be derived directly from Watson's transformation formula by specialization or through Bailey's method, the second similar formula can be proved either by using the first formula and the q-Gosper algorithm, or through the so-called Bailey lattice.
In this we paper we prove several new identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater type. These identities were found as the result of computer searches. The proofs involve a variety of techniques, including series-series identities, Bailey pairs, a theorem of Watson on basic hypergeometric series, generating functions and miscellaneous methods.
The aim of this paper is to establish new series transforms of Bailey type and to show that these Bailey type transforms work as efficiently as the classical one and give not only new $q$-hypergeometric identities, converting double or triple series into a very-well-poised $_{10}Φ_9$ or $_{12}Φ_{11}$ series but can also be utilized to derive new double and triple series Rogers-Ramanujan type identities and corresponding infinite families of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities.
A generalized Bailey pair, which contains several special cases considered by Bailey (\emph{Proc. London Math. Soc. (2)}, 50 (1949), 421--435), is derived and used to find a number of new Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. Consideration of associated $q$-difference equations points to a connection with a mild extension of Gordon's combinatorial generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities (\emph{Amer. J. Math.}, 83 (1961), 393--399). This, in turn, allows the formulation of natural combinatorial interpretations of many of the identities in Slater's list (\emph{Proc. London Math. Soc. (2)} …
This is a paper published in 2001 based on a talk given in 1999 celebrating the 50th anniversary of W. N. Bailey's influential q-series paper "Identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type". In no more than 13 pages I give a brief but reasonably complete overview of the mathematics related to Bailey's lemma.
The asymptotic probability theory of conjugacy classes of the finite general linear and unitary groups leads to a probability measure on the set of all partitions of natural numbers. A simple method of understanding these measures in terms of Markov chains is given and compared with work on the uniform measure. Elementary probabilistic proofs of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities follow. As a corollary, the main case of Bailey's lemma is interpreted as finding eigenvectors of the transition matrix of the Markov chain. It is shown that the viewpoint of Markov chains extends to quivers.
We give elementary derivations of some classical summation formulae for bilateral (basic) hypergeometric series. In particular, we apply Gauss' 2-F-1 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Dougall's 2-H-2 summation. Similarly, we apply Rogers' nonterminating 6-phi-5 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Our method of proof extends M. Jackson's first elementary proof of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation.
We provide new proofs to five of Ramanujan's intriguing identities on false theta functions without using the Rogers-Fine identity and Bailey transforms.
Motivated by a recent paper of Straub, we study the distribution of integer partitions according to the length of their largest hook, instead of the usual statistic, namely the size of the partitions. We refine Straub's analogue of Euler's Odd-Distinct partition theorem, derive a generalization in the spirit of Alder's conjecture, as well as a curious analogue of the first Rogers-Ramanujan identity. Moreover, we obtain a partition theorem that is the counterpart of Euler's pentagonal number theory in this setting, and connect it with the Rogers-Fine identity. We concludes with some congruence …
It is shown how many of the partial theta function identities in Ramanujan's lost notebook can be generalized to infinite families of such identities. Key in our construction is the Bailey lemma and a new generalization of the Jacobi triple product identity. By computing residues around the poles of our identities we find a surprising connection between partial theta functions identities and Garret-Ismail-Stanton-type extensions of multisum Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
