We present a systematic method for proving nonterminating basic hypergeometric identities. Assume that $k$ is the summation index. By setting a parameter $x$ to $xq^n$, we may find a recurrence relation of the summation by using the $q$-Zeilberger algorithm. This method applies to almost all nonterminating basic hypergeometric summation formulas in the book of Gasper and Rahman. Furthermore, by comparing the recursions and the limit values, we may verify many classical transformation formulas, including the Sears-Carlitz transformation, transformations of the very-well-poised $_8ϕ_7$ series, the Rogers-Fine identity, and the limiting case of Watson's formula that implies the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.
In terms of Dougall's $_2H_2$ series identity and the series rearrangement method, we establish an interesting symmetric formula for hypergeometric series. Then it is utilized to derive a known nonterminating form of Saalschütz's theorem. Similarly, we also show that Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ series identity implies the nonterminating form of Jackson's $_8ϕ_7$ summation formula. Considering the reversibility of the proofs, it is routine to show that Dougall's $_2H_2$ series identity is equivalent to a known nonterminating form of Saalschütz's theorem and Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ series identity is equivalent t…
An elementary proof is given for a nonterminating "strange" cubic $_7F_6$-series summation formula of Gasper and Rahman, through the modified Abel lemma on summation by parts. As a byproduct, an interesting nonterminating $_3F_2({3}/{4})$-series identity conjectured by Gosper, is also rederived.
In 1992, Wilf and Zeilberger conjectured that a hypergeometric term in several discrete and continuous variables is holonomic if and only if it is proper. Strictly speaking the conjecture does not hold, but it is true when reformulated properly: Payne proved a piecewise interpretation in 1997, and independently, Abramov and Petkovsek in 2002 proved a conjugate interpretation. Both results address the pure discrete case of the conjecture. In this paper we extend their work to hypergeometric terms in several discrete and continuous variables and prove the conjugate interpretation of the Wilf-Zei…
The applicability or terminating condition for the ordinary case of Zeilberger's algorithm was recently obtained by Abramov. For the $q$-analogue, the question of whether a bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term has a $qZ$-pair remains open. Le has found a solution to this problem when the given bivariate $q$-hypergeometric term is a rational function in certain powers of $q$. We solve the problem for the general case by giving a characterization of bivariate $q$-hypergeometric terms for which the $q$-analogue of Zeilberger's algorithm terminates. Moreover, we give an algorithm to determine whether…
Motivated by the telescoping proofs of two identities of Andrews and Warnaar, we find that infinite q-shifted factorials can be incorporated into the implementation of the q-Zeilberger algorithm in the approach of Chen, Hou and Mu to prove nonterminating basic hypergeometric series identities. This observation enables us to extend the q-WZ method to identities on infinite series. As examples, we will give the q-WZ pairs for some classical identities such as the q-Gauss sum, the $_6ϕ_5$ sum, Ramanujan's $_1ψ_1$ sum and Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ sum.
Several new $q$-supercongruences are obtained using transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, together with various techniques such as suitably combining terms, and creative microscoping, a method recently developed by the first author in collaboration with Wadim Zudilin. More concretely, the results in this paper include $q$-analogues of supercongruences (referring to $p$-adic identities remaining valid for some higher power of $p$) established by Long, by Long and Ramakrishna, and several other $q$-supercongruences. The six basic hypergeometric transformation formulas which ar…
We generalize a terminating summation formula to a unilateral nonterminating, and further, a bilateral summation formula by a property of analytic functions. The unilateral one is proved to be a $q$-analogue of a $_4F_3$-summation formula. And, an identity unifying Jacobi's triple product identity and the quintuple product identity is obtained as a special case of the bilateral one.
For a hypergeometric series $\sum_k f(k,a, b, ...,c)$ with parameters $a, b, >...,c$, Paule has found a variation of Zeilberger's algorithm to establish recurrence relations involving shifts on the parameters. We consider a more general problem concerning several similar hypergeometric terms $f_1(k, a, b,..., c)$, $f_2(k, a,b, ..., c)$, $...$, $f_m(k, a, b, ..., c)$. We present an algorithm to derive a linear relation among the sums $\sum_k f_i(k,a,b,...,c)$ $(1\leq i \leq m)$. Furthermore, when the summand $f_i$ contains the parameter $x$, we can require that the coefficients be $x$-free. Suc…
Using multiple q-integrals and a determinant evaluation, we establish a multivariable extension of Bailey's nonterminating 10-phi-9 transformation. From this result, we deduce new multivariable terminating 10-phi-9 transformations, 8-phi-7 summations and other identities. We also use similar methods to derive new multivariable 1-psi-1 summations. Some of our results are extended to the case of elliptic hypergeometric series.
With the exception of q-hypergeometric summation, the use of computer algebra packages implementing Zeilberger's "holonomic systems approach" in a broader mathematical sense is less common in the field of q-series and basic hypergeometric functions. A major objective of this article is to popularize the usage of such tools also in these domains. Concrete case studies showing software in action introduce to the basic techniques. An application highlight is a new computer-assisted proof of the celebrated Ismail-Zhang formula, an important q-analog of a classical expansion formula of plane waves …
A multidimensional generalization of Bailey's very-well-poised bilateral basic hypergeometric ${}_6ψ_6$ summation formula and its Dougall type ${}_5H_5$ hypergeometric degeneration for $q\to 1$ is studied. The multiple Bailey sum amounts to an extension corresponding to the case of a nonreduced root system of certain summation identities associated to the reduced root systems that were recently conjectured by Aomoto and Ito and proved by Macdonald. By truncation, we obtain multidimensional analogues of the very-well-poised unilateral (basic) hypergeometric Rogers ${}_6ϕ_5$ and Dougall ${}_5F_4…
In 2010, Kh. Hessami Pilehrood and T. Hessami Pilehrood introduced generating function identities used to obtain series accelerations for values of Dirichlet's $β$ function, via the Markov--Wilf--Zeilberger method. Inspired by these past results, together with related results introduced by Chu et al., we introduce a variety of hypergeometric recurrences. We prove these recurrences using the WZ method, and we apply these recurrences to obtain series acceleration identities. We introduce a family of summations generalizing a Ramanujan-type series for $\frac{1}{π^2}$ due to Guillera, and a family…
We present a method to prove hypergeometric double summation identities. Given a hypergeometric term $F(n,i,j)$, we aim to find a difference operator $ L=a_0(n) N^0 + a_1(n) N^1 +...+a_r(n) N^r $ and rational functions $R_1(n,i,j),R_2(n,i,j)$ such that $ L F = Δ_i (R_1 F) + Δ_j (R_2 F)$. Based on simple divisibility considerations, we show that the denominators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ must possess certain factors which can be computed from $F(n, i,j)$. Using these factors as estimates, we may find the numerators of $R_1$ and $R_2$ by guessing the upper bounds of the degrees and solving systems of l…
The coefficient of x^{-1} of a formal Laurent series f(x) is called the formal residue of f(x). Many combinatorial numbers can be represented by the formal residues of hypergeometric terms. With these representations and the extended Zeilberger's algorithm, we generate recurrence relations for summations involving combinatorial sequences such as Stirling numbers. As examples, we give computer proofs of several known identities and derive some new identities. The applicability of this method is also studied.
We give elementary derivations of some classical summation formulae for bilateral (basic) hypergeometric series. In particular, we apply Gauss' 2-F-1 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Dougall's 2-H-2 summation. Similarly, we apply Rogers' nonterminating 6-phi-5 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Our method of proof extends M. Jackson's first elementary proof of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation.
Linear homogeneous recurrence equations with polynomial coefficients are said to be holonomic. Such equations have been introduced in the last century for proving and discovering combinatorial and hypergeometric identities. Given a field K of characteristic zero, a term a(n) is called hypergeometric with respect to K, if the ratio a(n+1)/a(n) is a rational function over K. The solutions space of holonomic recurrence equations gained more interest in the 1990s from the well known Zeilberger's algorithm. In particular, algorithms computing the subspace of hypergeometric term solutions which cove…
