We prove existence and uniqueness results for nonlinear third order partial differential equations of the form $$ f_t - f_{yyy} = \sum_{j=0}^3 b_j (y, t; f) ~f^{(j)} + r(y, t) $$ where superscript $j$ denotes the $j$-th partial derivative with respect to $y$. The inhomogeneous term $r$, the coefficients $b_j$ and the initial condition $f(y,0)$ are required to vanish algebraically for large $|y|$ in a wide enough sector in the complex $y$-plane. Using methods related to Borel summation, a unique solution is shown to exist that is analytic in $y$ for all large $|y|$ in a sector. Three partial differential equations arising in the context of Hele-Shaw fingering and dendritic crystal growth are shown to be of this form after appropriate transformation, and then precise results are obtained for them. The implications of the rigorous analysis on some similarity solutions, formerly hypothesized in two of these examples, are examined.
In this paper, we mainly introduce a general method to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of free boundary problems with partially degenerate diffusion.
In this paper, we provide a direct approach to the existence and uniqueness of strong (in the probabilistic sense) and weak (in the PDE sense) solutions to quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations, which are neither monotone nor locally monotone.
In this paper we study the inverse conductivity problem with partial data. Moreover, we show that, in dimension $n\geq 3$ the uniqueness of the Calderón problem holds for the $C^{1}\bigcap H^{3/2, 2}$ conductivities.
The backward uniqueness of the Kolmogorov operator $L=\sum_{i,k=1}^n\partial_{x_i}(a_{i,k}(x,t)\partial_{x_k})+\sum_{l=1}^m x_l\partial_{y_l}-\partial_t$, was proved in this paper. We obtained a weak Carleman inequality via Littlewood-Paley decomposition for the global backward uniqueness.
In this paper, we consider a nonlinear Fuchsian type partial differential equation of the second order in the complex domain. Under a very weak assumption, we show the uniqueness of the solution. The result is applied to the problem of analytic continuation of local holomorphic solutions of this equation.
This paper deals with nonlinear singular partial differential equations of the form $t \partial u/\partial t=F(t,x,u,\partial u/\partial x)$ with independent variables $(t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{C}$, where $F(t,x,u,v)$ is a function continuous in $t$ and holomorphic in the other variables. Under a very weak assumption we show the uniqueness of the solution of this equation. The results are applied to the problem of analytic continuation of local holomorphic solutions of equations of this type.
In dimension $n\geq 3$, we prove a local uniqueness result for the potentials $q$ of the Schrödinger equation $-Δu+qu=0$ from partial boundary data. More precisely, we show that potentials $q_1,q_2\in L^\infty$ with positive essential infima can be distinguished by local boundary data if there is a neighborhood of a boundary part where $q_1\geq q_2$ and $q_1\not\equiv q_2$.
A uniqueness result for the recovery of the electric and magnetic coefficients in the time-harmonic Maxwell equations from local boundary measurements is proven. No special geometrical condition is imposed on the inaccessible part of the boundary of the domain, apart from imposing that the boundary of the domain is $C^{1,1}$. The coefficients are assumed to coincide on a neighbourhood of the boundary, a natural property in applications.
We address the question of the uniqueness of solution to the initial value problem associated to the equation \partial_{t}u+iα\partial^{2}_{x}u+β \partial^{3}_{x}u+iγ|u|^{2}u+δ|u|^{2}\partial_{x}u+εu^{2}\partial_{x}\bar{u} = 0, \quad x,t \in \R, and prove that a certain decay property of the difference $u_1-u_2$ of two solutions $u_1$ and $u_2$ at two different instants of times $t=0$ and $t=1$, is sufficient to ensure that $u_1=u_2$ for all the time.
We study the existence and uniqueness of the positive solutions of the problem (P): $\partial_tu-Δu+u^q=0$ ($q>1$) in $Ω\times (0,\infty)$, $u=\infty$ on $\partialΩ\times (0,\infty)$ and $u(.,0)\in L^1(Ω)$, when $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^N$. We construct a maximal solution, prove that this maximal solution is a large solution whenever $q<N/(N-2)$ and it is unique if $\partialΩ=\partial\barΩ^c$. If $\partialΩ$ has the local graph property, we prove that there exists at most one solution to problem (P)
We prove that quasi-concave positive solutions to a class of quasi-linear elliptic equations driven by the $p$-Laplacian in convex bounded domains of the plane have only one critical point. As a consequence, we obtain strict concavity results for suitable transformations of these solutions.
We give a partial uniqueness result concerning comparable renormalized solutions of the nonlinear elliptic problem $-\diw(\aop(x,Du))=μ$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$, where $μ$ is a Radon measure with bounded variation on $Ω$.
We prove for a two dimensional bounded domain that the Cauchy data for the Schroedinger equation measured on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary determines uniquely the potential. This implies, for the conductivity equation, that if we measure the current fluxes at the boundary on an arbitrary open subset of the boundary produced by voltage potentials supported in the same subset, we can determine uniquely the conductivity. We use Carleman estimates with degenerate weight functions to construct appropriate complex geometrical optics solutions to prove the results.
We give a new method to prove the existence, non-existence, multiplicity, orbital stability/instability of standing waves for NLS with partial confinement without the subcritical hypothesis, even in the reduction equation. Using this method, we give an affirmative answer for an open problem proposed by [7, Remark 1.10] where the authors conjectured the existence of more than a normalized solution. We also establish uniqueness results of the ground state solutions depending on the bifurcation parameters. We explain that when the effect of partial confinement is strong, a dimension reduction app…
We prove a unified and general criterion for the uniqueness of critical points of a functional in the presence of constraints such as positivity, boundedness, or fixed mass. Our method relies on convexity properties along suitable paths and significantly generalizes well-known uniqueness theorems. Due to the flexibility in the construction of the paths, our approach does not depend on the convexity of the domain and can be used to prove uniqueness in subsets, even if it does not hold globally. The results apply to all critical points and not only to minimizers, thus they provide uniqueness of …
In this Note, we present a Calderón-type uniqueness theorem on the Cauchy problem of stochastic partial differential equations. To this aim, we introduce the concept of stochastic pseudo-differential operators, and establish their boundedness and other fundamental properties. The proof of our uniqueness theorem is based on a new Carleman-type estimate.
We consider initial boundary value problems of time-fractional advection-diffusion equations with the zero Dirichlet boundary value $\partial_t^α u(x,t) = -Au(x,t)$, where $-A = \sum}{i,j=1}^d \partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_j) + \sum{j=1}^d b_j(x)\partial_j + c(x)$. We establish the uniqueness for an inverse problem of determining an order $α$ of fractional derivatives by data $u(x_0,t)$ for $0<t<T$ at one point $x_0$ in a spatial domain $\OOO$. The uniqueness holds even under assumption that $\OOO$ and $A$ are unknown, provided that the initial value does not change signs and is not identically…
We consider an inverse problem in elastodynamics arising in seismic imaging. We prove locally uniqueness of the density of a non-homogeneous, isotropic elastic body from measurements taken on a part of the boundary. We measure the Dirichlet to Neumann map, only on a part of the boundary, corresponding to the isotropic elasticity equation of a 3-dimensional object. In earlier works it has been shown that one can determine the sheer and compressional speeds on a neighborhood of the part of the boundary (accessible part) where the measurements have been taken. In this article we show that one can…
The purpose of this paper is to study the weak solutions of the fractional elliptic problem \begin{equation}\label{000} \begin{array}{lll} (-Δ)^αu+εg(u)=k\frac{\partial^αν}{\partial \vec{n}^α}\quad &{\rm in}\quad\ \ \barΩ,\\[3mm] \phantom{(-Δ)^α+εg(u)} u=0\quad &{\rm in}\quad\ \ \barΩ^c, \end{array} \end{equation} where $k>0$, $ε=1$ or $-1$, $(-Δ)^α$ with $α\in(0,1)$ is the fractional Laplacian defined in the principle value sense, $Ω$ is a bounded $C^2$ open set in $R^N$ with $N\ge 2$, $ν$ is a bounded Radon measure supported in $\partialΩ$ and $\frac{\partial^αν}{\partial \vec{n}^α}$ is defi…
We study a system of partial differential equations used to describe Bertrand and Cournot competition among a continuum of producers of an exhaustible resource. By deriving new a priori estimates, we prove the existence of classical solutions under general assumptions on the data. Moreover, under an additional hypothesis we prove uniqueness. We investigate the uniqueness of symmetric weak solutions to the stationary Navier-Stokes equation in a two-dimensional exterior domain $Ω$. It is known that, under suitable symmetry condition on the domain and the data, the problem admits at least one symmetric weak solution tending to zero at infinity. Given two symmetric weak solutions $u$ and $v$, we show that if $u$ satisfies the energy inequality $\| \nabla u \|_{L^2 (Ω)}^2 \le (f,u)$ and $\sup_{x \in Ω} (|x|+1)|v(x)|$ is sufficiently small, then $u=v$. The proof relies upon a density property for the solenoidal vector field and the Hard…
We consider the 3d cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a strong 2d harmonic potential. The model is physically relevant to observe the lower-dimensional dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate, but its ground state cannot be constructed by the standard method due to its supercritical nature. In Bellazzini-Boussaïd-Jeanjean-Visciglia \cite{BBJV}, the authors constructed a proper ground state introducing a constrained energy minimization problem. In this paper, we further investigate the properties of the ground state. First, we show that as the partial confinement is increased, the…
Consider a three dimensional piecewise homogeneous anisotropic elastic medium $Ω$ which is a bounded domain consisting of a finite number of bounded subdomains $D_α$, with each $D_α$ a homogeneous elastic medium. One typical example is a finite element model with elements with curvilinear interfaces for an ansiotropic elastic medium. Assuming the $D_α$ are known and Lipschitz, we are concerned with the uniqueness in the inverse boundary value problem of identifying the anisotropic elasticity tensor on $Ω$ from a localized Dirichlet to Neumann map given on a part of the boundary $\partial D_{α_…
Let $Ω$ be an open subset of $\Ri^d$ and $H_Ω=-\sum^d_{i,j=1}\partial_i c_{ij} \partial_j$ a second-order partial differential operator on $L_2(Ω)$ with domain $C_c^\infty(Ω)$ where the coefficients $c_{ij}\in W^{1,\infty}(Ω)$ are real symmetric and $C=(c_{ij})$ is a strictly positive-definite matrix over $Ω$. In particular, $H_Ω$ is locally strongly elliptic. We analyze the submarkovian extensions of $H_Ω$, i.e. the self-adjoint extensions which generate submarkovian semigroups. Our main result establishes that $H_Ω$ is Markov unique, i.e. it has a unique submarkovian extension, if and only i…
Piezoelectric appliances have become hugely important in the past century and computer simulations play an essential part in the modern design process thereof. While much work has been invested into the practical simulation of piezoelectric ceramics there still remain open questions regarding the partial differential equations governing the piezoceramics. The piezoelectric behavior of many piezoceramics can be described by a second order coupled partial differential equation system. This consists of an equation of motion for the mechanical displacement in three dimensions and a coupled electro…
In this paper we show the uniqueness of the critical point for \emph{semi-stable} solutions of the problem $$\begin{cases} -Δu=f(u)&\text{in }Ω\\ u>0&\text{in }Ω\\ u=0&\text{on } \partialΩ,\end{cases}$$ where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is a smooth bounded domain whose boundary has \emph{nonnegative} curvature and $f(0)\ge0$. It extends a result by Cabré-Chanillo to the case where the curvature of $\partialΩ$ vanishes.

Using ODE-methods and trapping regions derived by Mattingly and Sinai we give a new proof of the existence and uniqueness of solutions to Navier-Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions on the plane.
We consider a system of $n$-th order nonlinear quasilinear partial differential equations of the form $${\bf u}_t + \mathcal{P}(\partial_{\bf x}^{\bf j}){\bf u}+{\bf g} \left( {\bf x}, t, \{\partial_{\bf x}^{\bf j} {\bf u}\}) =0; {\bf {u}}({\bf x}, 0) = {\bf {u}}_I({\bf x})$$ with $\mathbf{u}\in\CC^{r}$, for $ t\in (0,T)$ and large $|{\bf x}|$ in a poly-sector $S$ in $\mathbb{C}^d$ ($\partial_{\bf x}^{\bf j} \equiv \partial_{x_1}^{j_1} \partial_{x_2}^{j_2} ...\partial_{x_d}^{j_d}$ and $j_1+...+j_d\le n$). The principal part of the constant coefficient $n$-th order differential operator $\mathc…
This paper surveys some recent results on existence, uniqueness and removable singularities for fully nonlinear differential equations on manifolds. The discussion also treats restriction theorems and the strong Bellman principle.
In this article we consider existence and uniqueness of the solutions to a large class of stochastic partial differential of form $\partial_t u = L_x u + b(t,u)+σ(t,u)\dot{W}$, driven by a Gaussian noise $\dot{W}$, white in time and spatial correlations given by a generic covariance $γ$. We provide natural conditions under which classical Picard iteration procedure provides a unique solution. We illustrate the applicability of our general result by providing several interesting particular choices for the operator $L_x$ under which our existence and uniqueness result hold. In particular, we sho…
In this paper we consider the linearized version of a system of partial differential equations arising from a fluid-structure interaction model. We prove the existence and the uniqueness of the solution under natural regularity assumptions.
Given $(M,g)$, a compact connected Riemannian manifold of dimension $d \geq 2$, with boundary $\partial M$, we consider an initial boundary value problem for a fractional diffusion equation on $(0,T) \times M$, $T>0$, with time-fractional Caputo derivative of order $α\in (0,1) \cup (1,2)$. We prove uniqueness in the inverse problem of determining the smooth manifold $(M,g)$ (up to an isometry), and various time-independent smooth coefficients appearing in this equation, from measurements of the solution on a subset of $\partial M$ at fixed time. In the "flat" case where $M$ is a compact subset…
We study the stationary Navier--Stokes equations in the whole plane with a compactly supported force term and with a prescribed constant spatial limit. Prior to this work, existence of solutions to this problem was only known under special symmetry and smallness assumptions. In the paper we solve the key difficulties in applying Leray's {\it invading domains method} and, as a consequence, prove the existence of $D$-solutions in the whole plane for arbitrary compactly supported force. The boundary condition at infinity are verified in two different scenarios: (I) the~limiting velocity is suffic…
In this paper, we discuss the uniqueness for solution to time-fractional diffusion equation $\partial_t^α(u-u_0) + Au=0$ with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, where an elliptic operator $-A$ is not necessarily symmetric. We prove that the solution is identically zero if its normal derivative with respect to the operator $A$ vanishes on an arbitrary small part of the spatial domain over a time interval. The proof is based on the Laplace transform and the spectral decomposition, and is valid for more general time-fractional partial differential equations, including those involving n…
Existence and uniqueness of classical solution to an initial-boundary value problem for the unsteady general planar Broadwell model with four velocities
This paper is concerned with the inverse diffraction problems by a periodic curve with Dirichlet boundary condition in two dimensions. It is proved that the periodic curve can be uniquely determined by the near-field measurement data corresponding to infinitely many incident plane waves with distinct directions at a fixed frequency. Our proof is based on Schiffer's idea which consists of two ingredients: i) the total fields for incident plane waves with distinct directions are linearly independent, and ii) there exist only finitely many linearly independent Dirichlet eigenfunctions in a bounde…
It is shown that a function $u$ satisfying $|\partial_tu+\sum_{i,j}\partial_i(a^{ij}\partial_ju)|\leq N(|u|+|\nabla u|)$, $|u(x,t)|\leq Ne^{N|x|^2}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n_+\times[0,T]$ and $u(x,0)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^n_+$ under certain conditions on $\{a^{ij}\}$ must vanish identically in $\mathbb{R}^n_+\times[0,T]$. The main point of the result is that the conditions imposed on $\{a^{ij}\}$ are of the type: $\{a^{ij}\}$ are Lipschitz and $|\nabla_xa^{ij}(x,t)|\leq \frac{E}{|x|}$, where $E$ is less than a given number, and the conditions are in some sense optimal.
In this work, we investigate the qualitative properties as uniqueness, regularity and stabilization of the weak solution to the nonlinear parabolic problem involving general $p(x)$-homogeneous operators: \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{alignedat}{2} {} \frac{q}{2q-1}\partial_t(u^{2q-1}) -\nabla.\, a(x, \nabla u) & {}= f(x,u) + h(t,x) u^{q-1} && \quad\mbox{ in } \, (0,T) \times Ω; u & {}> 0 && \quad\mbox{ in }\, (0,T) \times Ω; u & {}= 0 && \quad\mbox{ on }\, (0,T) \times \partialΩ; u(0,.)&{}= u_0 && \quad\ \mbox{in}\, \ Ω. \end{alignedat} \right. \end{equation*} Thanks to the Picone's identit…
We consider the dynamics of point particles which are confined to a bounded, possibly nonconvex domain $Ω$. Collisions with the boundary are described as purely elastic collisions. This turns the description of the particle dynamics into a coupled system of second order ODEs with discontinuous right-hand side. The main contribution of this paper is to develop a precise solution concept for this particle system, and to prove existence of solutions. In this proof we construct a solution by passing to the limit in an auxiliary problem based on the Yosida approximation. In addition to existence of…
We settle the problem of the uniqueness of normalized homeomorphic solutions to nonlinear Beltrami equations $\bar\partial f(z)=H(z, \partial f(z))$. It turns out that the uniqueness holds under definite and explicit bounds on the ellipticity at infinity, but not in general.
Motivated mainly by the localization over an open bounded set $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^n$ of solutions of the Schrödinger equations, we consider the Schrödinger equation over $Ω$ with a very singular potential $V(x) \ge C d (x, \partial Ω)^{-r}$ with $r\ge 2$ and a convective flow $\vec U$. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a very weak solution of the equation, when the right hand side datum $f(x)$ is in $L^1 (Ω, d(\cdot, \partial Ω))$, even if no boundary condition is a priori prescribed. We prove that, in fact, the solution necessarily satisfies (in a suitable way) the Dirichlet condition $u…
We consider the impedance tomography problem in the plane. Using Bukhgeim's scattering data for the Dirac problem, we prove that the conductivity is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neuman map
We prove a few existence results of a solution for a static system with a coupling of thermoviscoelastic type. As this system involves $L^1$ coupling terms we use the techniques of renormalized solutions for elliptic equations with $L^1$ data. We also prove partial uniqueness results.
