We study the existence and uniqueness of the positive solutions of the problem (P): $\partial_tu-Δu+u^q=0$ ($q>1$) in $Ω\times (0,\infty)$, $u=\infty$ on $\partialΩ\times (0,\infty)$ and $u(.,0)\in L^1(Ω)$, when $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^N$. We construct a maximal solution, prove that this maximal solution is a large solution whenever $q<N/(N-2)$ and it is unique if $\partialΩ=\partial\barΩ^c$. If $\partialΩ$ has the local graph property, we prove that there exists at most one solution to problem (P)
This work is devoted to the strong unique continuation problem for second order parabolic equations with nonsmooth coefficients. Introduction and bibliography have been revised.
We consider a model Venttsel type problem for linear parabolic systems of equations. The Venttsel type boundary condition is fixed on the flat part of the lateral surface of a given cylinder. It is defined by parabolic operator (with respect to the tangential derivatives) and the conormal derivative. The Hölder continuity of a weak solution of the problem is proved under optimal assumptions on the data. In particular, only boundedness in the time variable of the principal matrices of the system and the boundary operator is assumed. All results are obtained by so-called A(t)-caloric method.
Consider the parabolic equation with measure data \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} &u_t-{\rm div} \mathbf{a}(D u,x,t)=μ&\text{in}& \quad Ω_T, &u=0 \quad &\text{on}& \quad \partial_pΩ_T, \end{aligned}\right. \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $Ω_T=Ω\times (0,T)$, $\partial_pΩ_T=(\partialΩ\times (0,T))\cup (Ω\times\{0\})$, and $μ$ is a signed Borel measure with finite total mass. Assume that the nonlinearity ${\bf a}$ satisfies a small BMO-seminorm condition, and $Ω$ is a Reifenberg flat domain. This paper proves a global Marcinkiewicz estimate for the SOLA…
In this paper, we study quasilinear parabolic equations with the nonlinearity structure modeled after the $p(x,t)$-Laplacian on nonsmooth domains. The main goal is to obtain end point Calderón-Zygmund type estimates in the variable exponent setting. In a recent work \cite{byun2016nonlinear}, the estimates obtained were strictly above the natural exponent $p(x,t)$ and hence there was a gap between the natural energy estimates and the estimates above $p(x,t)$ (see \eqref{energy} and \eqref{byunok}). Here, we bridge this gap to obtain the end point case of the estimates obtained in \cite{byun2016…
Consider the nonlinear parabolic equation in the form $$ u_t-{\rm div} \mathbf{a}(D u,x,t)={\rm div}\,(|F|^{p-2}F) \quad \text{in} \quad Ω\times(0,T), $$ where $T>0$ and $Ω$ is a Reifenberg domain. We suppose that the nonlinearity $\mathbf{a}(ξ,x,t)$ has a small BMO norm with respect to $x$ and is merely measurable and bounded with respect to the time variable $t$. In this paper, we prove the global Calderón-Zygmund estimates for the weak solution to this parabolic problem in the setting of Lorentz spaces which includes the estimates in Lebesgue spaces. Our global Calderón-Zygmund estimates ex…
In this paper we prove that the full Keller-Segel system, a quasilinear strongly coupled reaction-crossdiffusion system of four parabolic equations, is well-posed in space dimensions 2 and 3 in the sense that it always admits an unique local-in-time solution in an adequate function space, provided that the initial values are suitably regular. The proof is done via an abstract solution theorem for nonlocal quasilinear equations by Amann and is carried out for general source terms. It is fundamentally based on recent nontrivial elliptic and parabolic regularity results which hold true even on ra…
In this paper, we establish strong backward uniqueness for solutions to sublinear parabolic equations of the type (1.1). The proof of our main result Theorem 1.1 is achieved by means of a new Carleman estimate and a Weiss type monotonicity that are tailored for such parabolic sublinear operators.
We study uniqueness of solutions to degenerate parabolic problems, posed in bounded domains, where no boundary conditions are imposed. Under suitable assumptions on the operator, uniqueness is obtained for solutions that satisfy an appropriate integral condition; in particular, such condition holds for possibly unbounded solutions belonging to a suitable weighted $L^1$ space.
We study the uniqueness of singular radial (forward and backward) self-similar positive solutions of the equation $u_t-Δu = u^p, \quad x\in{\mathbb R}^n,\ t>0,$ where $p\geq(n+2)/(n-2)_+$.
We investigate the quantitative uniqueness of solutions to parabolic equations with lower order terms on compact smooth manifolds. Quantitative uniqueness is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize quantitative uniqueness by the rate of vanishing. We can obtain the vanishing order of solutions by $C^{1, 1}$ norm of the potential functions, as well as the $L^\infty$ norm of the coefficient functions. Some quantitative Carleman estimates and three cylinder inequalities are established.
In this paper, we provide a direct approach to the existence and uniqueness of strong (in the probabilistic sense) and weak (in the PDE sense) solutions to quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations, which are neither monotone nor locally monotone.
Via Carleman estimates we prove uniqueness and continuous dependence results for lateral Cauchy problems for linear integro-differential parabolic equations without initial conditions. The additional information supplied prescribes the conormal derivative of the temperature on a relatively open subset of the lateral boundary of the space-time domain.
In this paper we study the backward uniqueness for parabolic equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients in time and space. The result presented here improves an old uniqueness theorem due to Lions and Malgrange [Math. Scand. ${\bf 8}$ (1960), 277--286] and some more recent results of Del Santo and Prizzi [J. Math. Pures Appl. ${\bf 84}$ (2005), 471--491; Ann. Mat. Pura Appl., to appear].
We prove the backward uniqueness for general parabolic operators of second order in the whole space under assumptions that the leading coefficients of the operator are Lipschitz and their gradients satisfy certain decay conditions. This result extends in some ways a classical result of Lions and Malgrange [12] and a recent result of the authors [10].
We prove uniqueness for weak solutions to abstract parabolic equations with the fractional Marchaud or Caputo time derivative. We consider weak solutions in time for divergence form equations when the fractional derivative is transferred to the test function.
We discuss the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution of the following quasilinear parabolic equation $u_t-Δ_{p(x)}u = f(x,u)$ in $ (0,T)\timesΩ$; $u = 0$ on $(0,T)\times\partialΩ$; $u(0,x)=u_0(x)$ in $Ω$; involving the $p(x)$-Laplacian operator. Next, we discuss the global behaviour of solutions and in particular some stabilization properties.
Bounded weak solutions to a particular class of degenerate parabolic cross-diffusion systems are shown to coincide with the unique strong solution determined by the same initial condition on the maximal existence interval of the latter. The proof relies on an estimate established for a relative entropy associated to the system.
This is a generalization of our prior work on the compact fixed point theory for the elliptic Rosseland-type equations. We obtain the maximum principle without the technical Steklov techniques. Inspired by the Rosseland equation in the conduction-radiation coupled heat transfer, we use the locally arbitrary growth conditions instead of the common global restricted growth conditions. Its physical meaning is: the absolute temperature should be positive and bounded. There exists a fixed point for the linearized map (compact and continuous in $L^2$) in a closed convex set. We also consider the non…
We consider the quantitative uniqueness properties for a parabolic type equation $ u_t-Δu = w(x,t) \nabla u + v(x,t) u$, when $v \in L^{p_2}_{t} L^{p_1}_x$ and $w \in L^{q_2}_{t} L^{q_1}_x$, with a suitable range for exponents $p_1$, $p_2$, $q_1$, and $q_2$. We prove a strong unique continuation property and provide a pointwise in time observability estimate.
We give a proof of existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to parabolic quasilinear equations for a fairly general class of nonconvex Hamiltonians with superlinear growth in the gradient variable. The approach is mainly based on classical techniques for uniformly parabolic quasilinear equations and on the Lipschitz estimates proved in [S.N. Armstrong and H.V. Tran, Viscosity solutions of general viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations, Math. Ann., 361 (2015)], as well as on viscosity solution arguments.
The purpose of this short note is to show how it is possible to combine existing results in the literature to get the unique continuation from sets of positive measure for time dependent parabolic equations with Lipschitz principal part and bounded lower order terms, result which was known in the case of analytic coefficients in [3].
In their 1968 paper Fujita and Watanabe considered the issue of uniqueness of the trivial solution of semilinear parabolic equations with respect to the class of bounded, non-negative solutions. In particular they showed that if the underlying ODE has non-unique solutions (as characterised via an Osgood-type condition) {\em and} the nonlinearity $f$ satisfies a concavity condition, then the parabolic PDE also inherits the non-uniqueness property. This concavity assumption has remained in place either implicitly or explicitly in all subsequent work in the literature relating to this and other, …
In this paper we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a nonlocal parabolic problem which generalizes the electric heating problem of a conducting body.
This paper study the well--posedness of the entropy formulation given by Plotnikov in [{Differential Equations}, 30 (1994), pp. 614--622] for forward-backward parabolic problem obtained as singular limit of a proper pseudoparabolic approximation. It was proved in [C. Mascia, A. Terracina, and A. Tesei, {Arch.\ Ration.\ Mech.\ Anal.}, 194 (2009), pp. 887--925] that such formulation gives uniqueness when the solution takes values in the stable phases. Here we consider the situation in which unstable phase is taken in account, proving that, in general, uniqueness does not hold.
In this article we present several results concerning uniqueness of $C$-viscosity and $L_{p}$-viscosity solutions for fully nonlinear parabolic equations. In case of the Isaacs equations we allow lower order terms to have just measurable bounded coefficients. Higher-order coefficients are assumed to be Hölder continuous in $x$ with exponent slightly less than $1/2$. This case is treated by using stability of maximal and minimal $L_{p}$-viscosity solutions.
The present paper deals with the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel equation in the plane inthe general framework of weak (or "free energy") solutions associated to an initial datum with finite mass $M\textless{} 8π$, finite second log-moment and finite entropy. The aim of the paper is twofold:(1) We prove the uniqueness of the "free energy" solution. The proof uses a DiPerna-Lions renormalizing argument which makes possible to get the "optimal regularity" as well as an estimate of the difference of two possible solutions in the critical $L^{4/3}$ Lebesgue norm similarly as for the $2d$ vorticit…
Using Bony's paramultiplication we improve a result obtained in in a previous paper for operators having coefficients non-Lipschitz-continuous with respect to $t$ but ${\mathcal C}^2$ with respect to $x$, showing that the same result is valid when ${\mathcal C}^2$ regularity is replaced by Lipschitz regularity in $x$.
We investigate the issue of uniqueness of the limit flow for a relevant class of quasi-linear parabolic equations defined on the whole space. More precisely, we shall investigate conditions which guarantee that the global solutions decay at infinity uniformly in time and their entire trajectory approaches a single steady state as time goes to infinity. Finally, we obtain a characterization of solutions which blow-up, vanish or converge to a stationary state for initial data of the form $λφ_0$ while $λ>0$ crosses a bifurcation value $λ_0$.
We obtain sharp maximal vanishing order at a given time level for solutions to parabolic equations with a $C{^1}$ potential $V$. Our main result Theorem 1.1 is a parabolic generalization of a well known result of Donnelly-Fefferman and Bakri. It also sharpens a previous result of Zhu that establishes similar vanishing order estimates which are instead averaged over time. The principal tool in our analysis is a new quantitative version of the well-known Escauriaza-Fernandez-Vessella type Carleman estimate that we establish in our setting.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for the heat equation with a nonsmooth coefficient of conductivity which models the displacement of a moving body inside a nonhomogeneous background. We prove the uniqueness of the moving inclusion from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator by using a dynamical probe method.
We consider degenerate and singular parabolic equations with $p$-Laplacian structure in bounded nonsmooth domains when the right-hand side is a signed Radon measure with finite total mass. We develop a new tool that allows global regularity estimates for the spatial gradient of solutions to such parabolic measure data problems, by introducing the (intrinsic) fractional maximal function of a given measure.
We study a mathematical model describing the dynamics of dislocation densities in crystals. This model is expressed as a one-dimensional system of a parabolic equation and a first order Hamilton-Jacobi equation that are coupled together. We show the existence and uniqueness of a viscosity solution among those assuming a lower-bound on their gradient for all time including the initial data. Moreover, we show the existence of a viscosity solution when we have no such restriction on the initial data. We also state a result of existence and uniqueness of an entropy solution of the system obtained …
We prove existence, uniqueness and regularity of weak solutions of a coupled parabolic-elliptic model in two dimensions; we consider the standard equations of magnetohydrodynamics with the advective terms removed from the velocity equation. Despite the apparent simplicity of the model, the proof requires results that are at the limit of what is available, including elliptic regularity in $L^{1}$ and a strengthened form of the Ladyzhenskaya inequality \[ \| f \|_{L^{4}} \leq c \| f \|_{L^{2,\infty}}^{1/2} \| \nabla f \|_{L^{2}}^{1/2}, \] which we derive using the theory of interpolation. The mo…
We study a system of parabolic equations consisting of a double nonlinear parabolic equations of Forchheimer type coupled with a semilinear parabolic equations. The system describes a fluid-like driven system for active-passive pedestrian dynamics. The structure of the nonlinearity of the coupling allows us to prove the uniqueness of solutions. We provide also stability estimates of solutions with respect to selected parameters.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the doubly nonlinear parabolic systems with mixed boundary conditions. Due to the unilateral constraint the problem comes as a variational inequality. We apply the penalty method and Gronwall's technique to prove the existence and uniqueness of the variational solution.
We consider a parabolic equation in a bounded domain $\OOO$ over a time interval $(0,T)$ with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We arbitrarily choose a subboundary $Γ\subset \ppp\OOO$. Then, we discuss an inverse problem of determining a zeroth-order spatially varying coefficient by extra data of solution $u$: $u\vert_{Γ\times (0,T)}$ and $u(\cdot,t_0)$ in $\OOO$ with $t_0=0$ or $t=T$. First we establish a conditional Lipschitz stability estimate as well as the uniqueness for the case $t_0=T.$ Second, under additional condition for $Γ$, we prove the uniqueness for the case $t_0=0$. T…
We investigate the relation between the backward uniqueness and the regularity of the coefficients for a parabolic operator. A necessary and sufficient condition for uniqueness is given in terms of the modulus of continuity of the coefficients.
We establish some perturbed minimization principles, and we develop a theory of subdifferential calculus, for functions defined on Riemannian manifolds. Then we apply these results to show existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations defined on Riemannian manifolds.

Let $u_{g}$ the unique solution of a parabolic variational inequality of second kind, with a given $g$. Using a regularization method, we prove, for all $g_{1}$ and $g_{2}$, a monotony property between $μu_{g_{1}} + (1-μ)u_{g_{2}}$ and $u_{μg_{1} + (1-μ)g_{2}}$ for $μ\in [0, 1]$. This allowed us to prove the existence and uniqueness results to a family of optimal control problems over $g$ for each heat transfer coefficient $h>0$, associated to the Newton law, and of another optimal control problem associated to a Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove also, when $h\to +\infty$, the strong conv…
In this paper we deal with the well-posedness of Dirichlet problems associated to nonlocal Hamilton-Jacobi parabolic equations in a bounded, smooth domain $Ω$, in the case when the classical boundary condition may be lost. We address the problem for both coercive and noncoercive Hamiltonians: for coercive Hamiltonians, our results rely more on the regularity properties of the solutions, while noncoercive case are related to optimal control problems and the arguments are based on a careful study of the dynamics near the boundary of the domain. Comparison principles for bounded sub and supersolu…
