We consider a class of weighted harmonic functions in the open upper half-plane known as $α$-harmonic functions. Of particular interest is the uniqueness problem for such functions subject to a vanishing Dirichlet boundary value on the real line and an appropriate vanishing condition at infinity. We find that the non-classical case ($α\neq0$) allows for a considerably more relaxed vanishing condition at infinity compared to the classical case ($α=0$) of usual harmonic functions in the upper half-plane. The reason behind this dichotomy is different geometry of zero sets of certain polynomials naturally derived from the classical binomial series.
Our findings shed new light on the theory of harmonic functions, for which we provide uniqueness results under vanishing conditions at infinity along a) geodesics, and b) rays emanating from the origin. The geodesic uniqueness results require vanishing on two distinct geodesics which is best possible. The ray uniqueness results involves an arithmetic condition which we analyze by introducing the concept of an admissible function of angles. We show that the arithmetic condition is to the point and that the set of admissible functions of angles is minimal with respect to a natural partial order.
We prove the uniqueness of solutions to Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps with images in a small geodesic ball of the target manifold. As a consequence, we show that such maps have Hoelder continuous derivatives. This gives an extension of a result by S. Hildebrandt et al concerning harmonic maps.
We present a new, easy, and elementary proof of Jensen's Theorem on the uniqueness of infinity harmonic functions. The idea is to pass to a finite difference equation by taking maximums and minimums over small balls.
In this paper, we study the fractional harmonic gradient flow on $S^1$ taking values in $S^{n-1} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ for every $n \geq 2$, in particular addressing uniqueness and regularity of solutions in the so-called energy class with sufficiently small energy, adding to the existing body of knowledge which includes existence of solutions and certain bubbling phenomena.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.
In this paper, we continue to study the fractional harmonic gradient flow on $S^{n-1}$ taking values in a general closed manifold $N \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, addressing global existence and uniqueness of solutions of energy class with sufficiently small energy, adding to the existing body of knowledge pertaining to the half-harmonic gradient flow and expanding upon our previous work in [34]. We extend the techniques by Struwe in [30] and Rivière in [22] to the non-local framework analogous to [34] to derive uniqueness, employ commutator estimates as in [8] for regularity and follow [30] for a ge…
The uniqueness of the positive ground state solutions of fractional Shrodinger equations with a harmonic potential has not been covered by the breakthrough method developed in [1, 2]. It has remained an open question for years. [3] and [5] were quite recently able to prove the existence of the ground state solutions and to derive important properties but they failed to address the uniqueness. [3] left it as an open question, and [5] run numerical simulations that were in favor of the uniqueness. Very recently, the authors of this note developed a general and unified method to prove the uniquen…
\begin{abstract} We consider the following poly-harmonic equations with critical exponents: \begin{equation}\label{P} (-Δ)^m u =K(y)u^{\frac{N+2m}{N-2m}},\;\;\; u>0\;\;\;\hbox{in} \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation} where $N> 2m+2,m\in\mathbb{N}_{+}, K(y)$ is positive and periodic in its first $k$ variables $(y_1,\cdots, y_k)$, $1\leq k<\frac{N-2m}{2}$. Under some conditions on $K(y)$ near its critical point, we prove not only that problem~\eqref{P} admits solutions with infinitely many bubbles, but also that the bubbling solutions obtained in our existence result are locally unique. This local uniqu…
We study ($p$-harmonic) singular functions, defined by means of upper gradients, in bounded domains in metric measure spaces. It is shown that singular functions exist if and only if the complement of the domain has positive capacity, and that they satisfy very precise capacitary identities for superlevel sets. Suitably normalized singular functions are called Green functions. Uniqueness of Green functions is largely an open problem beyond unweighted $\mathbf{R}^n$, but we show that all Green functions (in a given domain and with the same singularity) are comparable. As a consequence, for $p$-…
We examine the question of uniqueness for the equivariant reduction of the harmonic map heat flow in the energy supercritical dimension. It is shown that, generically, singular data can give rise to two distinct solutions which are both stable, and satisfy the local energy inequality. We also discuss how uniqueness can be retrieved.
We study the existence, uniqueness, and stability of self-similar expanders of the harmonic map heat flow in equivariant settings. We show that there exist selfsimilar solutions to any admissiable initial data and that their uniqueness and stability properties are essentially determined by the energy-minimising properties of the so called equator maps.
We prove that the standard half-harmonic map $U:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{S}^1$ defined by \begin{equation*} x\to \begin{pmatrix} \frac{x^2-1}{x^2+1} \frac{-2x}{x^2+1} \end{pmatrix} \end{equation*} is nondegenerate in the sense that all bounded solutions of the linearized half-harmonic map equation are linear combinations of three functions corresponding to rigid motions (dilation, translation and rotation) of $U$.
We establish global existence, uniqueness, regularity and long-time asymptotics of strong solutions to the half-harmonic heat flow and dissipative Landau-Lifshitz equation, valid for initial data that is small in the homogeneous Sobolev norm $\dot{H}^{\frac n 2}$ for space dimensions $n \le 3$.
We are interested in the uniqueness of solutions to Maxwell's equations when the magnetic permeability $μ$ and the permittivity $\varepsilon$ are symmetric positive definite matrix-valued functions in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We show that a unique continuation result for globally $W^{1,\infty}$ coefficients in a smooth, bounded domain, allows one to prove that the solution is unique in the case of coefficients which are piecewise $W^{1,\infty}$ with respect to a suitable countable collection of sub-domains with $C^{0}$ boundaries. Such suitable collections include any bounded finite collection. The p…
In this paper, we establish the uniqueness of heat flow of harmonic maps into (N, h) that have sufficiently small renormalized energies, provided that N is either a unit sphere $S^{k-1}$ or a compact Riemannian homogeneous manifold without boundary. For such a class of solutions, we also establish the convexity property of the Dirichlet energy for $t\ge t_0>0$ and the unique limit property at time infinity. As a corollary, the uniqueness is shown for heat flow of harmonic maps into any compact Riemannian manifold N without boundary whose gradients belong to $L^q_t L^l_x$ for $q>2$ and $l>n$ sa…
It is shown that a function $u$ satisfying $|\partial_tu+\sum_{i,j}\partial_i(a^{ij}\partial_ju)|\leq N(|u|+|\nabla u|)$, $|u(x,t)|\leq Ne^{N|x|^2}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n_+\times[0,T]$ and $u(x,0)=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^n_+$ under certain conditions on $\{a^{ij}\}$ must vanish identically in $\mathbb{R}^n_+\times[0,T]$. The main point of the result is that the conditions imposed on $\{a^{ij}\}$ are of the type: $\{a^{ij}\}$ are Lipschitz and $|\nabla_xa^{ij}(x,t)|\leq \frac{E}{|x|}$, where $E$ is less than a given number, and the conditions are in some sense optimal.
In this paper we prove uniqueness for an inverse boundary value problem (IBVP) arising in electrodynamics. We assume that the electromagnetic properties of the medium, namely the magnetic permeability, the electric permittivity and the conductivity, are described by continuously differentiable functions.
We show the uniqueness of particle paths of a velocity field, which solves the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations in the half-space $\mathbb{R}_+^3$ with the Navier boundary condition. In particular, by means of energy estimates and the assumption of small energy we prove that the velocity field satisfies the necessary regularity needed to prove the uniqueness of particle paths.
For all $1<p<\infty$ and $N\ge 2$ we prove that there is a constant $α(p,N)>0$ such that the $p$-harmonic measure in $\R^N_+$ of a ball of radius $0 < δ\leq 1$ in $\R^{N-1}$ is bounded above and below by a constant times $δ^{α(p.N)}$. We provide explicit estimates for the exponent $α(p,N)$
In a recent paper the first and the third authors introduced the notion of horizontal α-harmonic map, with respect to a given C^1 planes distribution P_T on all R^m. The goal of this paper is to investigate compactness and quantization properties of sequences of horizontal 1/2- harmonic maps u_k in 1D. The quantization analysis is obtained through a precise asymptotic development of the energy of u_k in the neck regions and a subtle application of new Pohozaev-type formulae.
The harmonic map energy of a map from a closed, constant-curvature surface to a closed target manifold can be seen as a functional on the space of maps and domain metrics. We consider the gradient flow for this energy. In the absence of singularities, previous theory established that the flow converges to a branched minimal immersion, but only at a sequence of times converging to infinity, and only after pulling back by a sequence of diffeomorphisms. In this paper we investigate whether it is necessary to pull back by these diffeomorphisms, and whether the convergence is uniform as time tends …
In this paper, we address a simplified version of a problem arising from volcanology. Specifically, as reduced form of the boundary value problem for the Lamé system, we consider a Neumann problem for harmonic functions in the half-space with a cavity $C$. Zero normal derivative is assumed at the boundary of the half-space; differently, at $\partial C$, the normal derivative of the function is required to be given by an external datum $g$, corresponding to a pressure term exerted on the medium at $\partial C$. Under the assumption that the (pressurized) cavity is small with respect to the dist…
The goal of this paper is to discuss some of the results in [31] and [32] and expand upon the work there by proving a global weak existence result as well as a first bubbling analysis in finite time. In addition, an alternative local existence proof is presented based on a fixed-point argument. This leads to two possible outlooks until a conjecture by Sire, Wei and Zheng is settled, see [27]: Either there always exists a global smooth solution (thus the solution constructed here is actually as regular as desired) or finite-time bubbling may occur in a similar way as for the harmonic gradient f…
In this paper we study the local and global regularity properties of the Zakharov system on the half line with rough initial data. These properties include local and global wellposedness results, local and global smoothing results and the behavior of higher order Sobolev norms of the solutions. Smoothing means that the nonlinear part of the solution on the half line is smoother than the initial data. The gain in regularity coincides with the gain that was observed for the periodic Zakharov and the Zakharov on the real line. Uniqueness is proved in the class of smooth solutions. When the bounda…
Non-uniqueness of three-dimensional Euler equations and Navier-Stokes equations forced by random noise, path-wise and more recently even in law, have been proven by various authors. We prove non-uniqueness in law of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations forced by random noise and diffused via a fractional Laplacian that has power between zero and one half. The solution we construct has H$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$lder regularity with a small exponent rather than Sobolev regularity with a small exponent. For the power sufficiently small, the non-uniqueness in law holds at the level of Leray-Hop…
A representation for the sharp coefficient in a pointwise estimate for the gradient of a generalized Poisson integral of a function $f$ on ${\mathbb R}^{n-1}$ is obtained under the assumption that $f$ belongs to $L^p$. It is assumed that the kernel of the integral depends on the parameters $α$ and $β$. The explicit formulas for the sharp coefficients are found for the cases $p=1$, $p=2$ and for some values of $α, β$ in the case $p=\infty$. Conditions ensuring the validity of some analogues of the Khavinson's conjecture for the generalized Poisson integral are obtained. The sharp estimates are …
We obtain the existence, regularity, uniqueness of the non-stationary problems of a class of non-Newtonian fluid is a power law fluid with $p>9/5$ in the half-space under slip boundary conditions.
It is known that a bounded solution of the heat equation in a half-space which becomes zero at some time must be identically zero, even though no assumptions are made on the boundary values of the solutions. In a recent example, Luis Escauriaza showed that this statement fails if the half-space is replaced by cones with opening angle smaller than 90 degrees. Here we show the result remains true for cones with opening angle larger than 110 degrees. The proof covers heat equations having lower-order terms with bounded measurable coefficients.
We prove a critical Hardy inequality on the half-space by using the harmonic transplantation. Also we give an improvement of the subcritical Hardy inequality on the half-space, which converges to the critical Hardy inequality. Sobolev type inequalities are also discussed.
We introduce a heat flow associated to half-harmonic maps, which have been introduced by Da Lio and Rivière. Those maps exhibit integrability by compensation in one space dimension and are related to harmonic maps with free boundary. We consider a new flow associated to these harmonic maps with free boundary which is actually motivated by a rather unusual heat flow for half-harmonic maps. We construct then weak solutions and prove their partial regularity in space and time via a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. The present paper complements the study initiated by Struwe and Chen-Lin.
The existence, uniqueness and uniformly estimates for solutions of the parameter dependent abstract Navier-Stokes problem on half space are derived. In application the existence, uniqueness and uniformly L^{p} estimates for solution of the Wentzell-Robin type mixed problem for Navier-Stokes equation is established.
Our concern in this paper is to study the qualitative properties for harmonic functions related to the fractional Laplacian. Firstly we classify the polynomials in the whole space and in the half space for the fractional Laplacian defined in a principle value sense at infinity. Secondly, we study the fractional harmonic functions in half space with singularities on the boundary and the related distributional identities.
A representation of the sharp constant in a pointwise estimate of the gradient of a harmonic function in a multidimensional half-space is obtained under the assumption that function's boundary values belong to $L^p$. This representation is concretized for the cases $p=1, 2,$ and $\infty$.
We prove the existence of p-harmonic functions under the form u(r, $σ$) = r --$β$ $ω$($σ$) in any cone C S generated by a spherical domain S and vanishing on $\partial$C S. We prove the uniqueness of the exponent $β$ and of the normalized function $ω$ under a Lipschitz condition on S.
We consider nonlocal linear Schrödinger-type critical systems of the type \begin{equation}\label{eqabstr} Δ^{1/4} v=Ω\, v~~~\mbox{in $\R\,.$} \ \end{equation} where $Ω$ is antisymmetric potential in $L^2(\R,so(m))$, $v$ is a ${\R}^m$ valued map and $Ω\, v$ denotes the matrix multiplication. We show that every solution $v\in L^2(\R,\R^m)$ of \rec{eqabstr} is in fact in $L^p_{loc}(\R,\R^m)$, for every $2\le p<+\infty$, in other words, we prove that the system (\ref{eqabstr}) which is a-priori only critical in $L^2$ happens to have a subcritical behavior for antisymmetric potentials. As an applic…
We study infinite time blow-up phenomenon for the half-harmonic map flow \begin{equation}\label{e:main00} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} u_t = -(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}}u + \left(\frac{1}{2π}\int_{\mathbb{R}}\frac{|u(x)-u(s)|^2}{|x-s|^2}ds\right)u\quad\text{ in }\mathbb{R}\times (0, \infty), u(\cdot, 0) = u_0\quad\text{ in }\mathbb{R}, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} with a function $u:\mathbb{R}\times [0, \infty)\to \mathbb{S}^1$. Let $q_1,\cdots, q_k$ be distinct points in $\mathbb{R}$, there exist an initial datum $u_0$ and smooth functions $ξ_j(t)\to q_j$, $0<μ_j(t)\to 0$, as $t\to +\infty$, $j = 1,…
We prove the existence and uniqueness of a traveling front and of its speed for the homogeneous heat equation in the half-plane with a Neumann boundary reaction term of non-balanced bistable type or of combustion type. We also establish the monotonicity of the front and, in the bistable case, its behavior at infinity. In contrast with the classical bistable interior reaction model, its behavior at the side of the invading state is of power type, while at the side of the invaded state its decay is exponential. These decay results rely on the construction of a family of explicit bistable traveli…
We establish long-time existence and uniqueness for the 2D wave equation with a harmonic potential in one direction. This proof relies on a fine study of the so-called space-time resonances of the equation. Then we derive a resonant system for this equation and we prove that it is a satisfying approximation for the original equation.
