Let $X$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with conic singularities, i.e. a Riemannian manifold whose metric has a conic degeneracy at the boundary. Let $Δ$ be the Friedrichs extension of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $X.$ There are two natural ways to define geodesics passing through the boundary: as ``diffractive'' geodesics which may emanate from $\partial X$ in any direction, or as ``geometric'' geodesics which must enter and leave $\partial X$ at points which are connected by a geodesic of length $π$ in $\partial X.$ Let $\DIFF=\{0\} \cup \{\pm lengths of closed diffractive geodesics\}$ and $\GEOM=\{0\} \cup \{\pm lengths of closed geometric geodesics\}.$ We show that $$ \Tr \cos t \sqrtΔ\in C^{-n-0}(\RR) \cap C^{-1-0}(\RR\backslash \GEOM) \cap C^\infty(\RR\backslash \DIFF).$$ This generalizes a classical result of Chazarain and Duistermaat-Guillemin on boundaryless manifolds, which in turn follows from Poisson summation in the case $X=S^1.$
Let $(X,g)$ be a compact manifold with conic singularities. Taking $Δ_g$ to be the Friedrichs extension of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, we examine the singularities of the trace of the half-wave group $e^{- i t \sqrt{ \smash[b]{Δ_g}}}$ arising from strictly diffractive closed geodesics. Under a generic nonconjugacy assumption, we compute the principal amplitude of these singularities in terms of invariants associated to the geodesic and data from the cone point. This generalizes the classical theorem of Duistermaat-Guillemin on smooth manifolds and a theorem of Hillairet on flat surfaces wit…
In this paper, we investigate the long-time structure of the heat kernel on a Riemannian manifold M which is asymptotically conic near infinity. Using geometric microlocal analysis and building on results of Guillarmou and Hassell on the low-energy resolvent, we give a complete description of the asymptotic structure of the heat kernel in all spatial and temporal regimes. We apply this structure to define and investigate a renormalized zeta function and determinant of the Laplacian on M.
In this article, we study the the harmonic map heat flow from a manifold with conic singularities to a closed manifold. In particular, we have proved the short time existence and uniqueness of solutions as well as the existence of global solutions into manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. These results are established in virtue of the maximal regularity theory on manifolds with conic singularities.
This paper is a continuation of the investigation of resolvents of elliptic operators on conic manifolds from math.AP/0410178 and math.AP/0410176 to the case of manifolds with boundary and realizations of operators under boundary conditions. We prove the existence of sectors of minimal growth for realizations of boundary value problems for cone operators under natural ellipticity conditions on the symbols. Special attention is devoted to the clarification of the analytic structure of the resolvent.
We derive a detailed asymptotic expansion of the heat trace for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on functions on manifolds with conic singularities, using the Singular Asymptotics Lemma of Jochen Bruening and Robert T. Seeley [BS]. In the subsequent paper we investigate how the terms in the expansion reflect the geometry of the manifold.
In this article, we shall construct the resolvent of Laplacian at high energies near the spectrum on non-product conic manifolds with a single cone tip. Microlocally, the resolvent kernel is the sum of b-pseudodifferential operators, scattering pseudodifferential operators and intersecting Legendrian distributions. As an application, we shall establish Strichartz estimates for Schrödinger equations on non-compact manifolds with multiple non-product conic singularities.
We investigate the behavior of various spectral invariants, particularly the determinant of the Laplacian, on a family of smooth Riemannian manifolds which undergo conic degeneration; that is, which converge in a particular way to a manifold with a conical singularity. Our main result is an asymptotic formula for the determinant up to terms which vanish as the degeneration parameter goes to zero. The proof proceeds in two parts; we study the fine structure of the heat trace on the degenerating manifolds via a parametrix construction, and then use that fine structure to analyze the zeta functio…
We study the closed extensions (realizations) of differential operators subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on weighted L_p-Sobolev spaces over a manifold with boundary and conical singularities. Under natural ellipticity conditions we determine the domains of the minimal and the maximal extension. We show that both are Fredholm operators and give a formula for the relative index.
In this survey, we review some applications and extensions of the author's results with Richard Melrose on propagation of singularities for solutions to the wave equation on manifolds with conical singularities. These results mainly concern: the local decay of energy on noncompact manifolds with diffractive trapped orbits (joint work with Dean Baskin); singularities of the wave trace created by diffractive closed geodesics (joint work with G. Austin Ford); and the distribution of scattering resonances associated to such closed geodesics (joint work with Luc Hillairet).
We prove the global-in-time Strichartz estimates for wave equations on the nontrapping asymptotically conic manifolds. We obtain estimates for the full set of wave admissible indices, including the endpoint. The key points are the properties of the microlocalized spectral measure of Laplacian on this setting showed in Hassell-Zhang and a Littlewood-Paley squarefunction estimate. As applications, we prove the global existence and scattering for a family of nonlinear wave equations on this setting.
We consider the Swift-Hohenberg equation on manifolds with conical singularities and show existence, uniqueness and maximal regularity of the short time solution in terms of Mellin-Sobolev spaces. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition so that the above solution exists for all times. Space asymptotic expansion of the solution near the singularity is also provided and its relation to the local geometry is shown. The same problem is considered on closed manifolds and similar results are obtained by using the above singular analysis theory.
The aim of this paper is to extend the definition of geodesics to conical manifolds, defined as submanifolds of $\R^n$ with a finite number of singularities. We look for an approach suitable both for the local geodesic problem and for the calculus of variation in the large
The aim of this paper is to extend the Morse theory for geodesics to the conical manifolds. We define these manifolds as submanifolds of $\R^n$ with a finite number of conical singularities. To formulate a good Morse theory we must use an appropriate definition of geodesic. The main theorem of this paper claims that, although the energy is nonsmooth, we can find a continuous retraction of its sublevels in absence of critical points. So, we can give a good definition of index for isolated critical values and for isolated critical points. We prove that Morse relations hold and, at last, we give …
We study the decay of the global energy for the damped Klein-Gordon equation on non-compact manifolds with finitely many cylindrical and subconic ends up to bounded perturbation. We prove that under the Geometric Control Condition, the decay is exponential, and that under the weaker Network Control Condition, the decay is logarithmic, by developing the global Carleman estimate with multiple weights.
We prove global-in-time Strichartz estimates without loss of derivatives for the solution of the Schroedinger equation on a class of non-trapping asymptotically conic manifolds. We obtain estimates for the full set of admissible indices, including the endpoint, in both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous cases. This result improves on the results in earlier papers of Hassell-Tao-Wunsch and Mizutani which were local in time.
The virtual dimensions of both framed and unframed SU(2) magnetic monopoles on asymptotically conic 3-manifolds are obtained by computing the index of a Fredholm extension of the associated deformation complex. The unframed dimension coincides with the one obtained by Braam for conformally compact 3-manifolds. The computation follows from the application of a Callias-type index theorem.
We consider the unnormalized Yamabe flow on manifolds with conical singularities. Under certain geometric assumption on the initial cross-section we show well posedness of the short time solution in the $L^q$-setting. Moreover, we give a picture of the deformation of the conical tips under the flow by providing an asymptotic expansion of the evolving metric close to the boundary in terms of the initial local geometry. Due to the blow up of the scalar curvature close to the singularities we use maximal $L^q$-regularity theory for conically degenerate operators.
For the wave equation associated to the Laplacian on a compact manifold with boundary with a conic metric (with respect to which the boundary is metrically a point) the propagation of singularities through the boundary is analyzed. Under appropriate regularity assumptions the diffracted, non-direct, wave produced by the boundary is shown to have Sobolev regularity greater than the incoming wave.
We obtain an $L^4$ space-time Strichartz inequality for any smooth three-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which is asymptotically conic at infinity and non-trapping, where $u$ is a solution to the Schrödinger equation $iu_t + {1/2} Δ_M u = 0$. The exponent $H^{1/4}(M)$ is sharp, by scaling considerations. In particular our result covers asymptotically flat non-trapping manifolds. Our argument is based on the interaction Morawetz inequality introduced by Colliander et al., interpreted here as a positive commutator inequality for the tensor product $U(t,z',z'') := u(t,z') u(t,z'')$ of the…
We study the existence and regularity of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous heat equation on compact Riemannian manifolds with conical singularities. We introduce weighted Hölder and Sobolev spaces with discrete asymptotics and we prove existence and maximal regularity of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the inhomogeneous heat equation, when the free term lies in a weighted parabolic Hölder or Sobolev space with discrete asymptotics. This generalizes a result previously obtained by Coriasco, Schrohe, and Seiler (Thm. 7.2 in Math. Z. 244 (2003), 235--269) by different mean…
We derive conditions that ensure the existence of a bounded $H_\infty$-calculus in weighted $L_p$-Sobolev spaces for closed extensions $\underline{A}_T$ of a differential operator $A$ on a conic manifold with boundary, subject to differential boundary conditions $T$. In general, these conditions ask for a particular pseudodifferential structure of the resolvent $(λ-\underline{A}_T)^{-1}$ in a sector $Λ\subset\mathbf{C}$. In case of the minimal extension they reduce to parameter-ellipticity of the boundary value problem $(A,T)$. Examples concern the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians.
We compute the index of the Dirac operator on spin Riemannian manifolds with conical singularities, acting from $L^p(Σ^+)$ to $L^q(Σ^-)$ with $p,q>1$. When $1+\frac{n}{p}-\frac{n}{q}>0$ we obtain the usual Atiyah-Patodi-Singer formula, but with a spectral cut at $\frac{n+1}{2}-\frac{n}{q}$ instead of 0 in the definition of the eta invariant. In particular we reprove Chou's formula for the $L^2$ index. For $1+\frac{n}{p}-\frac{n}{q}\leq 0$ the index formula contains an extra term related to the Calderón projector.
The classical Stein-Tomas restriction theorem is equivalent to the statement that the spectral measure $dE(λ)$ of the square root of the Laplacian on $\RR^n$ is bounded from $L^p(\RR^n)$ to $L^{p'}(\RR^n)$ for $1 \leq p \leq 2(n+1)/(n+3)$, where $p'$ is the conjugate exponent to $p$, with operator norm scaling as $λ^{n(1/p - 1/p') - 1}$. We prove a geometric generalization in which the Laplacian on $\RR^n$ is replaced by the Laplacian, plus suitable potential, on a nontrapping asymptotically conic manifold, which is the first time such a result has been proven in the variable coefficient setti…
We obtain the Strichartz inequalities $$ \| u \|_{L^q_t L^r_x([0,1] \times M)} \leq C \| u(0) \|_{L^2(M)}$$ for any smooth $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$ which is asymptotically conic at infinity (with either short-range or long-range metric perturbation) and non-trapping, where $u$ is a solution to the Schrödinger equation $iu_t + {1/2} Δ_M u = 0$, and $2 < q, r \leq \infty$ are admissible Strichartz exponents ($\frac{2}{q} + \frac{n}{r} = \frac{n}{2}$). This corresponds with the estimates available for Euclidean space (except for the endpoint $(q,r) = (2, \frac{2n}{n-2})$ when $n > …
We study an elliptic differential operator A on a manifold with conic points. Assuming A to be defined on the smooth functions supported away from the singularities, we first address the question of possible closed extensions of A to L^p Sobolev spaces and then explain how additional ellipticity conditions ensure maximal regularity for the operator A. Investigating the Lipschitz continuity of the maps f(u)=|u|^α, with real α\ge 1, and f(u)=u^α, with αa natural number, and using a result of Clément and Li, we finally show unique solvability of a quasilinear equation of the form \dot{u} - a(u) Δ…
We consider manifolds with conic singularites that are isometric to $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ outside a compact set. Under natural geometric assumptions on the cone points, we prove the existence of a logarithmic resonance-free region for the cut-off resolvent. The estimate also applies to the exterior domains of non-trapping polygons via a doubling process. The proof of the resolvent estimate relies on the propagation of singularities theorems of Melrose and the second author to establish a "very weak" Huygens' principle, which may be of independent interest. As applications of the estimate, we obtain…
We analyze the resolvent $R(k)=(P+k^2)^{-1}$ of Schrödinger operators $P=Δ+V$ with short range potential $V$ on asymptotically conic manifolds $(M,g)$ (this setting includes asymptotically Euclidean manifolds) near $k=0$. We make the assumption that the dimension is greater or equal to 3 and that $P$ has no $L^2$ null space and no resonance at 0. In particular, we show that the Schwartz kernel of $R(k)$ is a conormal polyhomogeneous distribution on a desingularized version of $M\times M\times [0,1]$. Using this, we show that the Riesz transform of $P$ is bounded on $L^p$ for $1<p<n$ and that t…
Let $L = Δ+ V$ be Schr{ö}dinger operator with a non-negative potential $V$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. We prove that the conical square functional associated with $L$ is bounded on $L^p$ under different assumptions. This functional is defined by $$ \mathcal{G}_L (f) (x) = \left( \int_0^\infty \int_{B(x,t^{1/2})} |\nabla e^{-tL} f(y)|^2 + V |e^{-tL} f(y)|^2 \frac{\mathrm{d}t \mathrm{d}y}{Vol(y,t^{1/2})} \right)^{1/2}.$$For $p \in [2,+\infty)$ we show that it is sufficient to assume that the manifold has the volume doubling property whereas for $p \in (1,2)$ we need extra assumptions …
Let X be a compact manifold with boundary, and g a scattering metric on X, which may be either of short range or `gravitational' long range type. Thus, g gives X the geometric structure of a complete manifold with an asymptotically conic end. Let H be an operator of the form $H = Δ+ P$, where $Δ$ is the Laplacian with respect to g and P is a self-adjoint first order scattering differential operator with coefficients vanishing at the boundary of X and satisfying a `gravitational' condition. We define a symbol calculus for Legendre distributions on manifolds with codimension two corners and use …
