This paper concerns the restricted 3-body problem. By applying topological methods we give a computer assisted proof of the existence of some classes of periodic orbits, the existence of symbolic dynamics and we give a rigorous lower estimate for the topological entropy.
Since Poincaré, periodic orbits have been one of the most important objects in dynamical systems. However, searching them is in general quite difficult. A common way to find them is to construct families of periodic orbits which start at obvious periodic orbits. On the other hand, given two periodic orbits one might ask if they are connected by an orbit cylinder, i.e., by a one-parameter family of periodic orbits. In this article we study this question for a certain class of periodic orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Our strategy is to compare the Cieliebak-Frauenfel…
The elliptic isosceles restricted three body problem (REI3BP) models the motion of a massless body under the influence of the Newtonian gravitational force caused by two other bodies called the primaries. The primaries of masses $m_{1}=m_{2}$ move along a degenerate Keplerian elliptic collision orbit (on a line) under their gravitational attraction, whereas the third, massless particle, moves on the plane perpendicular to their line of motion and passing through the center of mass of the primaries. By symmetry, the component of the angular momentum $G$ of the massless particle along the direct…
Let $K$ be the Cantor set. We prove that arbitrarily close to a homeomorphism $T:K\rightarrow K$ there exists a homeomorphism $\widetilde T:K\rightarrow K$ such that the $α$-limit and the $ω$-limit of every orbit is a periodic orbit. We also prove that arbitrarily close to an endomorphism $T:K\rightarrow K$ there exists an endomorphism $\widetilde T:K\rightarrow K$ close to $T$ such that every orbit is finally periodic.
We prove the existence of periodic solutions of the restricted $(2N+1)$-body problem when the $2N$-primaries move on a periodic Hip-Hop solution and the massless body moves on the line that contains the center of mass and is perpendicular to the base of the antiprism formed by the $2N$-primaries.
We present a combinatorial approach to rigorously show the existence of fixed points, periodic orbits, and symbolic dynamics in discrete-time dynamical systems, as well as to find numerical approximations of such objects. Our approach relies on the method of `correctly aligned windows'. We subdivide the `windows' into cubical complexes, and we assign to the vertices of the cubes labels determined by the dynamics. In this way we encode the dynamics information into a combinatorial structure. We use a version of the Sperner Lemma saying that if the labeling satisfies certain conditions, then the…
For a topological dynamical system $(X, T)$ we define a uniform generator as a finite measurable partition such that the symmetric cylinder sets in the generated process shrink in diameter uniformly to zero. The problem of existence and optimal cardinality of uniform generators has lead us to new challenges in the theory of symbolic extensions. At the beginning we show that uniform generators can be identified with so-called symbolic extensions with an embedding, i.e., symbolic extensions admitting an equivariant measurable selector from preimages. From here we focus on such extensions and we …
In this paper, we consider a family of Sturm-Liouville operators on the $ω$-periodic domain. The bifurcation with respect to the parameter region is studied, and the elliptic regions are estimated by trace formula. At last, these results are used to study the linear stability of the elliptic equilibrium point along $z$-axis in Robe's restricted three-body problem.
In this work we consider a periodically forced generic integrate-and-fire model with a unique attracting equilibrium in the subthreshold dynamics and study the dependence of the firing-rate on the frequency of the drive. In an earlier study we have obtained rigorous results on the bifurcation structure in such systems, with emphasis on the relation between the firing-rate and the rotation number of the existing periodic orbits. In this work we study how these bifurcation structures behave upon variation of the frequency of the input. This allows us to show that the dependence of the firing-rat…
\begin{abstract} In this paper, we investigate a shift arising from graph $G$. We prove that any $k$-dimensional shift of finite type can be generated through a $k$-dimensional graph. We investigate the structure of the shift space using the generating matrices for the shift space. We prove that a two dimensional shift space has a horizontally (vertically) periodic point if and only if it possesses a $(m,n)$-periodic point (for some $m,n\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0\}$). We prove that a shift space is finite if and only if it can be generated by permutation matrices. We study the non-emptiness p…
Let $Δ\subsetneq\V$ be a proper subset of the vertices $\V$ of the defining graph of an aperiodic shift of finite type $(Σ_{A}^{+},§)$. Let $Δ_{n}$ be the union of cylinders in $Σ_{A}^{+}$ corresponding to the points $x$ for which the first $n$-symbols of $x$ belong to $Δ$ and let $μ$ be an equilibrium state of a Hölder potential $ϕ$ on $Σ_{A}^{+}$. We know that $μ(Δ_{n})$ converges to zero as $n$ diverges. We study the asymptotic behaviour of $μ(Δ_{n})$ and compare it with the pressure of the restriction of $ϕ$ to $Σ_Δ$. The present paper extends some results in \cite{CCC} to the case when $Σ…
We treat the circular and elliptic restricted three-body problems in inertial frames as periodically forced Kepler problems with additional singularities and explain that in this setting the main result of [4] is applicable. This guarantees the existence of an arbitrary large number of generalized periodic orbits (periodic orbits with possible double collisions regularized) provided the mass ratio of the primaries is small enough.
We present a method for proving the existence of symmetric periodic, heteroclinic or homoclinic orbits in dynamical systems with the reversing symmetry. As an application we show that the Planar Restricted Circular Three Body Problem (PCR3BP) corresponding to the Sun-Jupiter-Oterma system possesses an infinite number of symmetric periodic orbits and homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov orbits. Moreover, we show the existence of symbolic dynamics on six symbols for PCR3BP and the possibility of resonance transitions of the comet. This extends earlier results by Wilczak and Zgliczynski - Heteroclin…
The aim of the present work is to reduce the secular solution around the triangular equilibrium points to periodic solution in the frame work of the generalized restricted thee-body problem. This model is generalized in sense that both the primaries are oblate and radiating as well as the gravitational potential from a belt. We show that the linearized equation of motion of the infinitesimal body around the triangular equilibrium points has a secular solution when the value of mass ratio equals the critical mass value. Moreover, we reduce this solution to periodic solution, as well as some num…
In this paper, we consider a time-periodically forced Kepler problem in any dimensions, with an external force which we only assume to be regular in a neighborhood of the attractive center. We prove that there exist infinitely many periodic orbits in this system, with possible double collisions with the center regularized, which accumulate the attractive center. The result is obtained via a localization argument combined with a result on $C^{1}$-persistence of closed orbits by a local homotopy-streching argument. Consequently, by formulating the circular and elliptic restricted three-body prob…
The paper deals with the study of a satellite attracted by n primary bodies, which form a relative equilibrium. We use orthogonal degree to prove global bifurcation of planar and spatial periodic solutions from the equilibria of the satellite. In particular, we analyze the restricted three body problem and the problem of a satellite attracted by the Maxwell's ring relative equilibrium.
We determine three invariants: Arnold's $J^+$-invariant as well as $\mathcal{J}_1$ and $\mathcal{J}_2$ invariants, which were introduced by Cieliebak-Frauenfelder-van Koert, of periodic orbits of the second kind near the heavier primary in the restricted three-body problem, provided that the mass ratio is sufficiently small.
In the restricted three-body problem, consecutive collision orbits are those orbits which start and end at collisions with one of the primaries. Interests for such orbits arise not only from mathematics but also from various engineering problems. In this article, using Floer homology, we show that there are either a periodic collisional orbit, or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem on each bounded component of the energy hypersurface for Jacobi energy below the first critical value.
The planar circular restricted three body problem (PCRTBP) is symmetric with respect to the line of masses and there is a corresponding anti-symplectic involution on the cotangent bundle of the 2-sphere in the regularized PCRTBP. Recently it was shown that each bounded component of an energy hypersurface with low energy for the regularized PCRTBP is fiberwise starshaped. This enable us to define a Lagrangian Rabinowitz Floer homology which is related to periodic orbits symmetric for the anti-symplectic involution in the regularized PCRTBP and hence to symmetric periodic orbits in the unregular…
In this paper we show the existence of syzygies for all periodic orbits inside the bounded Hill's region of the planer circular restricted three-body problem with energy below the second critical value. The proof will follow some ideas of Birkhoff to compute the roots of partial derivatives of the effective potential. Birkhoff's methods are extended to higher energies and a new base case is created and shown to fulfil the requirements. An other step from Birkhoff is scrutinized to continue the statement to all mass ratios. The final step is achieved by integrating over periodic orbits. Applyin…
When the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (RTBP) is periodically perturbed, families of unstable periodic orbits break up into whiskered tori, with most tori persisting into the perturbed system. In this study, we 1) develop a quasi-Newton method which simultaneously solves for the tori and their center, stable, and unstable directions; 2) implement continuation by both perturbation as well as rotation numbers; 3) compute Fourier-Taylor parameterizations of the stable and unstable manifolds; 4) regularize the equations of motion; and 5) globalize these manifolds. Our methodology impro…
We review some recent progress on the research of the periodic orbits of the N-body problem, and propose a numerical scheme to determine the spatial doubly-symmetric periodic orbits (SDSPs for short). Both comet- and lunar-type SDSPs in the circular restricted three-body problem are computed, as well as the Hill-type SDSPs in Hill's lunar problem. Doubly symmetries are exploited so that the SDSPs can be computed efficiently. The monodromy matrix can be calculated by the information of one fourth period. The periodicity conditions are solved by Broyden's method with a line-search, and the algori…
We construct countable Markov partitions for non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds of any dimension, extending earlier work of O. Sarig for surfaces. These partitions allow us to obtain symbolic coding on invariant sets of full measure for all hyperbolic measures whose Lyapunov exponents are bounded away from zero by a constant. Applications include counting results for hyperbolic periodic orbits, and structure of hyperbolic measures of maximal entropy.
We apply Arnold's theory of generic smooth plane curves to Stark-Zeeman systems. This is a class of Hamiltonian dynamical systems that describes the dynamics of an electron in an external electric and magnetic field, and includes many systems from celestial mechanics. Based on Arnold's $J^+$-invariant, we introduce invariants of periodic orbits in planar Stark-Zeeman systems and study their behaviour.
We consider the planar $N$-centre problem, with homogeneous potentials of degree $-\a<0$, $\a \in [1,2)$. We prove the existence of infinitely many collisions-free periodic solutions with negative and small energy, for any distribution of the centres inside a compact set. The proof is based upon topological, variational and geometric arguments. The existence result allows to characterize the associated dynamical system with a symbolic dynamics, where the symbols are the partitions of the $N$ centres in two non-empty sets.
Often in the study the periodic orbits in dynamical systems, the computation of the Lyapunov Coeficients is needed. In this paper, the calculations of this coeficients were done via complex variable transformation in order to obtain the complex normal form for a planar Bautin bifurcation. Some examples are given in order to verify the consistency of the algorithms.
We will show that the period $T$ of a closed orbit of the planar circular restricted three-body problem (viewed on rotating coordinates) depends on the region it encloses. Roughly speaking, we show that, $2 T=kπ+\int_Ωg$ where $k$ is an integer, $Ω$ is the region enclosed by the periodic orbit and $g:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}$ is a function that only depends on the constant $C$ known as the Jacobian integral; it does not depend on $Ω$. This theorem has a Keplerian flavor in the sense that it relates the period with the space "swept" by the orbit. As an application, we prove that there is a ne…
We show that in the category of effective $Z$ dynamical systems there is a universal system, i.e. one that factors onto every other effective system. In particular, for d $\geq 3$ there exist d-dimensional shifts of finite type which are universal for 1-dimensional subactions of SFTs. On the other hand, we show that there is no universal effective $Z^d$-system for $d>1$, and in particular SFTs cannot be universal for subactions of rank $d>1$. As a consequence, a decrease in entropy and Medvedev degree and periodic data are not sufficient for a factor map to exists between SFTs. We also discuss…
A set $R\subset \mathbb{N}$ is called rational if it is well-approximable by finite unions of arithmetic progressions. Examples of rational sets include many classical sets of number-theoretical origin such as the set of squarefree numbers, the set of abundant numbers, or sets of the form $Φ_x:=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \frac{\boldsymbolφ(n)}{n}<x\}$, where $x\in[0,1]$ and $\boldsymbolφ$ is Euler's totient function. We investigate the combinatorial and dynamical properties of rational sets and obtain new results in ergodic Ramsey theory. We show that if $R$ is a rational set with $\overline{d}(R)>0$, …
In this work we introduce a planar restricted four-body problem where a massless particle moves under the gravitational influence due to three bodies following the eight figure choreography, and we explore some symmetric periodic orbits of this system which turns out to be non autonomous. We demonstrate that certain families of involutions are reversing symmetries of certain N-body problem. We consider a particular case of such families of reversing symmetries and we use it to study both theoretically and numerically certain type of symmetric periodic orbits of this system. The symmetric perio…
The equations of the restricted three-body problem describe the motion of a massless particle under the influence of two primaries of masses $1-μ$ and $μ$, $0\leq μ\leq 1/2$, that circle each other with period equal to $2π$. When $μ=0$, the problem admits orbits for the massless particle that are ellipses of eccentricity $e$ with the primary of mass 1 located at one of the focii. If the period is a rational multiple of $2π$, denoted $2πp/q$, some of these orbits perturb to periodic motions for $μ> 0$. For typical values of $e$ and $p/q$, two resonant periodic motions are obtained for $μ> 0$. W…
We consider a restricted $(N+1)$-body problem, with $N \geq 3$ and homogeneous potentials of degree $-\a<0$, $\a \in [1,2)$. We prove the existence of infinitely many collision-free periodic solutions with negative and small Jacobi constant and small values of the angular velocity, for any initial configuration of the centres. We will introduce a Maupertuis' type variational principle in order to apply the broken geodesics technique developed in the paper "N. Soave and S. Terracini. Symbolic dynamics for the $N$-centre problem at negative energies. Discrete and Cont. Dynamical Systems A, 32 (2…
We consider a perturbation of a central force problem of the form \begin{equation*} \ddot x = V'(|x|) \frac{x}{|x|} + \varepsilon \,\nabla_x U(t,x), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^{2} \setminus \{0\}, \end{equation*} where $\varepsilon \in \mathbb{R}$ is a small parameter, $V\colon (0,+\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ and $U\colon \mathbb{R} \times (\mathbb{R}^{2} \setminus \{0\}) \to \mathbb{R}$ are smooth functions, and $U$ is $τ$-periodic in the first variable. Based on the introduction of suitable time-maps (the radial period and the apsidal angle) for the unperturbed problem ($\varepsilon=0$) and of an as…
In this work we perform a numerical exploration of the families of planar periodic orbits in the Hill's approximation in the restricted four body problem, that is, after a symplectic scaling, two massive bodies are sent to infinity, by mean of expanding the potential as a power series in m3^1/3, (the mass of the third small primary) and taking the limit case when m3 tends to zero. The limiting Hamiltonian depends on a parameter mu (the mass of the second primary) and possesses some dynamical features from both the classical restricted three- body problem and the restricted four-body problem. W…
This paper constructs a certain planar four-body problem which exhibits fast energy growth. The system considered is a quasi-periodic perturbation of the Restricted Planar Circular three-body Problem (RPC3BP). Gelfreich-Turaev's and de la Llave's mechanism is employed to obtain the fast energy growth. The diffusion is created by a heteroclinic cycle formed by two Lyapunov periodic orbits surrounding $L_1$ and $L_2$ Lagrangian points and their heteroclinic intersections. Our model is the first known example in celestial mechanics of the a priori chaotic case of Arnold diffusion.
We derived explicit symbolic expressions for the first, second, and third Lyapunov coefficients of the complex focus of a planar system modelling activity of a neural network. The analysis of these expressions allowed us to obtain new results about the number and location of limit cycles in the model.
We survey the connections between entropy, chaos, and independence in topological dynamics. We present extensions of two classical results placing the following notions in the context of symbolic dynamics: 1. Equivalence of positive entropy and the existence of a large (in terms of asymptotic and Shnirelman densities) set of combinatorial independence for shift spaces. 2. Existence of a mixing shift space with a dense set of periodic points with topological entropy zero and without ergodic measure with full support, nor any distributionally chaotic pair. Our proofs are new and yield conclusion…
Many unstable periodic orbits of the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (PCRTBP) persist as invariant tori when a periodic forcing is added to the equations of motion. In this study, we compute tori corresponding to exterior Jupiter-Europa and interior Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP resonant periodic orbits in a concentric circular restricted 4-body problem (CCR4BP). Motivated by the 2:1 Laplace resonance between Europa and Ganymede's orbits, we then attempt the continuation of a Jupiter-Europa 3:4 resonant orbit from the CCR4BP into the Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP. We strongly believe that the re…
Covering relations are a topological tool for detecting periodic orbits, symbolic dynamics and chaotic behavior for autonomous ODE. We extend the method of the covering relations onto systems with a time dependent perturbation. As an example we apply the method to non-autonomous perturbations of the Rössler equations to show that for small perturbation they posses symbolic dynamics.
This survey article is concerned with the study of bifurcations of piecewise-smooth maps. We review the literature in circle maps and quasi-contractions and provide paths through this literature to prove sufficient conditions for the occurrence of two types of bifurcation scenarios involving rich dynamics. The first scenario consists of the appearance of periodic orbits whose symbolic sequences and "rotation" numbers follow a Farey tree structure; the periods of the periodic orbits are given by consecutive addition. This is called the {\em period adding} bifurcation, and its proof relies on re…
We study restricted permutations of sets which have a geometrical structure. The study of restricted permutations is motivated by their application in coding for flash memories, and their relevance in different applications of networking technologies and various channels. We generalize the model of $\mathbb{Z}^d$-permutations with restricted movement suggested by Schmidt and Strasser in 2016, to restricted permutations of graphs, and study the new model in a symbolic dynamical approach. We show a correspondence between restricted permutations and perfect matchings. We use the theory of perfect…
This paper introduces the \textit{truncator} map as a dynamical system on the space of configurations of an interacting particle system. We represent the symbolic dynamics generated by this system as a non-commutative algebra and classify its periodic orbits using properties of endomorphisms of the resulting algebraic structure. A stochastic model is constructed on these endomorphisms, which leads to the classification of the distribution of periodic orbits for random truncator maps. This framework is applied to investigate the periodic transitions of Bornholdt's spin market model.
