Let $Δ\subsetneq\V$ be a proper subset of the vertices $\V$ of the defining graph of an aperiodic shift of finite type $(Σ_{A}^{+},§)$. Let $Δ_{n}$ be the union of cylinders in $Σ_{A}^{+}$ corresponding to the points $x$ for which the first $n$-symbols of $x$ belong to $Δ$ and let $μ$ be an equilibrium state of a Hölder potential $ϕ$ on $Σ_{A}^{+}$. We know that $μ(Δ_{n})$ converges to zero as $n$ diverges. We study the asymptotic behaviour of $μ(Δ_{n})$ and compare it with the pressure of the restriction of $ϕ$ to $Σ_Δ$. The present paper extends some results in \cite{CCC} to the case when $Σ_Δ$ is irreducible and periodic. We show an explicit example where the asymptotic behaviour differs from the aperiodic case.
Let $Δ\subsetneq\V$ be a proper subset of the vertices $\V$ of the defining graph of an irreducible and aperiodic shift of finite type $(Σ_{A}^{+},§)$. Let $Σ_Δ$ be the subshift of allowable paths in the graph of $Σ_{A}^{+}$ which only passes through the vertices of $Δ$. For a random point $x$ chosen with respect to an equilibrium state $μ$ of a Hölder potential $ϕ$ on $Σ_{A}^{+}$, let $τ_{n}$ be the point process defined as the sum of Dirac point masses at the times $k>0$, suitably rescaled, for which the first $n$-symbols of $§^k x$ belong to $Δ$. We prove that this point process converges i…
Let $K$ be the Cantor set. We prove that arbitrarily close to a homeomorphism $T:K\rightarrow K$ there exists a homeomorphism $\widetilde T:K\rightarrow K$ such that the $α$-limit and the $ω$-limit of every orbit is a periodic orbit. We also prove that arbitrarily close to an endomorphism $T:K\rightarrow K$ there exists an endomorphism $\widetilde T:K\rightarrow K$ close to $T$ such that every orbit is finally periodic.
This paper concerns the restricted 3-body problem. By applying topological methods we give a computer assisted proof of the existence of some classes of periodic orbits, the existence of symbolic dynamics and we give a rigorous lower estimate for the topological entropy.
For a topological dynamical system $(X, T)$ we define a uniform generator as a finite measurable partition such that the symmetric cylinder sets in the generated process shrink in diameter uniformly to zero. The problem of existence and optimal cardinality of uniform generators has lead us to new challenges in the theory of symbolic extensions. At the beginning we show that uniform generators can be identified with so-called symbolic extensions with an embedding, i.e., symbolic extensions admitting an equivariant measurable selector from preimages. From here we focus on such extensions and we …

We present a combinatorial approach to rigorously show the existence of fixed points, periodic orbits, and symbolic dynamics in discrete-time dynamical systems, as well as to find numerical approximations of such objects. Our approach relies on the method of `correctly aligned windows'. We subdivide the `windows' into cubical complexes, and we assign to the vertices of the cubes labels determined by the dynamics. In this way we encode the dynamics information into a combinatorial structure. We use a version of the Sperner Lemma saying that if the labeling satisfies certain conditions, then the…
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcate from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines, such that the linear differential systems that define the piecewise one have a center and two saddles. That is, the linear differential system in the region between the two parallel lines (i.e. the central subsystem) has a center and the others subsystems have saddles. We prove that if the central subsystem has a real or a boundary center, then we have at least six limit …
\begin{abstract} In this paper, we investigate a shift arising from graph $G$. We prove that any $k$-dimensional shift of finite type can be generated through a $k$-dimensional graph. We investigate the structure of the shift space using the generating matrices for the shift space. We prove that a two dimensional shift space has a horizontally (vertically) periodic point if and only if it possesses a $(m,n)$-periodic point (for some $m,n\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0\}$). We prove that a shift space is finite if and only if it can be generated by permutation matrices. We study the non-emptiness p…
In this work we consider a periodically forced generic integrate-and-fire model with a unique attracting equilibrium in the subthreshold dynamics and study the dependence of the firing-rate on the frequency of the drive. In an earlier study we have obtained rigorous results on the bifurcation structure in such systems, with emphasis on the relation between the firing-rate and the rotation number of the existing periodic orbits. In this work we study how these bifurcation structures behave upon variation of the frequency of the input. This allows us to show that the dependence of the firing-rat…
A new method of symbolic analysis based on finite discretization of velocity-curvature space is proposed. A minimum alphabet is introduced in a natural way, and a number of initial analytic measures are defined that make it possible to study the structure of discrete mapping dynamics. The proposed method is tested by application to a system of two unidirectionally coupled logistic maps. It is shown that this method can be used to reveal and study changes in the structure of attractors. In the given example, features in the attractor structure of the driven subsystem are studied upon its escape…
Consider a periodically forced nonlinear system which can be presented as a collection of smaller subsystems with pairwise interactions between them. Each subsystem is assumed to be a massive point moving with friction on a compact surface, possibly with a boundary, in an external periodic field. We present sufficient conditions for the existence of a periodic solution for the whole system. The result is illustrated by a series of examples including a chain of strongly coupled pendulums in a periodic field.
We construct countable Markov partitions for non-uniformly hyperbolic diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds of any dimension, extending earlier work of O. Sarig for surfaces. These partitions allow us to obtain symbolic coding on invariant sets of full measure for all hyperbolic measures whose Lyapunov exponents are bounded away from zero by a constant. Applications include counting results for hyperbolic periodic orbits, and structure of hyperbolic measures of maximal entropy.
We consider the planar $N$-centre problem, with homogeneous potentials of degree $-\a<0$, $\a \in [1,2)$. We prove the existence of infinitely many collisions-free periodic solutions with negative and small energy, for any distribution of the centres inside a compact set. The proof is based upon topological, variational and geometric arguments. The existence result allows to characterize the associated dynamical system with a symbolic dynamics, where the symbols are the partitions of the $N$ centres in two non-empty sets.
Often in the study the periodic orbits in dynamical systems, the computation of the Lyapunov Coeficients is needed. In this paper, the calculations of this coeficients were done via complex variable transformation in order to obtain the complex normal form for a planar Bautin bifurcation. Some examples are given in order to verify the consistency of the algorithms.
Let Diff^1(M) be the set of all C^1-diffeomorphisms f : M \rightarrow M, where M is a compact boundaryless d-dimensional manifold, d \geq 2. We prove that there is a residual subset R of Diff^1(M) such that if f \in R and if H(p) is the homoclinic class associated with a hyperbolic periodic point p, then either H(p) admits a dominated splitting of the form E\oplusF1 \oplus...\oplusFk \oplusG, where Fi is not hyperbolic and one-dimensional, or f|H(p) has no symbolic extensions.
A set $R\subset \mathbb{N}$ is called rational if it is well-approximable by finite unions of arithmetic progressions. Examples of rational sets include many classical sets of number-theoretical origin such as the set of squarefree numbers, the set of abundant numbers, or sets of the form $Φ_x:=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \frac{\boldsymbolφ(n)}{n}<x\}$, where $x\in[0,1]$ and $\boldsymbolφ$ is Euler's totient function. We investigate the combinatorial and dynamical properties of rational sets and obtain new results in ergodic Ramsey theory. We show that if $R$ is a rational set with $\overline{d}(R)>0$, …
A flow $(X,T)$ induces the flow $(2^X,T)$. Quasifactors are minimal subsystems of $(2^X, T)$ and hence orbit closures of almost periodic points for $(2^X, T)$. We study quasifactors via the almost periodic points for $(2^X,T)$.
A robotic system can be viewed as a collection of lower-dimensional systems that are coupled via reaction forces (Lagrange multipliers) enforcing holonomic constraints. Inspired by this viewpoint, this paper presents a novel formulation for nonlinear control systems that are subject to coupling constraints via virtual "coupling" inputs that abstractly play the role of Lagrange multipliers. The main contribution of this paper is a process---mirroring solving for Lagrange multipliers in robotic systems---wherein we isolate subsystems free of coupling constraints that provably encode the full-ord…
We show that in the category of effective $Z$ dynamical systems there is a universal system, i.e. one that factors onto every other effective system. In particular, for d $\geq 3$ there exist d-dimensional shifts of finite type which are universal for 1-dimensional subactions of SFTs. On the other hand, we show that there is no universal effective $Z^d$-system for $d>1$, and in particular SFTs cannot be universal for subactions of rank $d>1$. As a consequence, a decrease in entropy and Medvedev degree and periodic data are not sufficient for a factor map to exists between SFTs. We also discuss…
In this paper, we study the dynamics of a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equation $ i u_t = \triangle u + u^p $ for $ x \in \mathbb{T}^d$. We prove that the PDE is integrable on the space of non-negative Fourier coefficients, in particular that each Fourier coefficient of a solution can be explicitly solved by quadrature. Within this subspace we demonstrate a large class of (quasi)periodic solutions all with the same frequency, as well as solutions which blowup in finite time in the $L^2$ norm.
We survey the connections between entropy, chaos, and independence in topological dynamics. We present extensions of two classical results placing the following notions in the context of symbolic dynamics: 1. Equivalence of positive entropy and the existence of a large (in terms of asymptotic and Shnirelman densities) set of combinatorial independence for shift spaces. 2. Existence of a mixing shift space with a dense set of periodic points with topological entropy zero and without ergodic measure with full support, nor any distributionally chaotic pair. Our proofs are new and yield conclusion…
Covering relations are a topological tool for detecting periodic orbits, symbolic dynamics and chaotic behavior for autonomous ODE. We extend the method of the covering relations onto systems with a time dependent perturbation. As an example we apply the method to non-autonomous perturbations of the Rössler equations to show that for small perturbation they posses symbolic dynamics.
We derived explicit symbolic expressions for the first, second, and third Lyapunov coefficients of the complex focus of a planar system modelling activity of a neural network. The analysis of these expressions allowed us to obtain new results about the number and location of limit cycles in the model.
This survey article is concerned with the study of bifurcations of piecewise-smooth maps. We review the literature in circle maps and quasi-contractions and provide paths through this literature to prove sufficient conditions for the occurrence of two types of bifurcation scenarios involving rich dynamics. The first scenario consists of the appearance of periodic orbits whose symbolic sequences and "rotation" numbers follow a Farey tree structure; the periods of the periodic orbits are given by consecutive addition. This is called the {\em period adding} bifurcation, and its proof relies on re…
The existence of stable periodic orbits and chaotic invariant sets of singularly perturbed problems of fast-slow type having Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation points in its fast subsystem is proved by means of the geometric singular perturbation method and the blow-up method. In particular, the blow-up method is effectively used for analyzing the flow near the Bogdanov-Takens type fold point in order to show that a slow manifold near the fold point is extended along the Boutroux's tritronquée solution of the first Painlevé equation in the blow-up space.
We study the rotational behaviour on minimal sets of torus homeomorphisms and show that the associated rotation sets can be any type of line segments as well as non-convex and even plane-separating continua. This shows that restrictions holding for rotation sets on the whole torus are not valid on minimal sets. The proof uses a construction of rotational horseshoes by Kwapisz to transfer the problem to a symbolic level, where the desired rotational behaviour is implemented by means of suitable irregular Toeplitz sequences.
We study the set of $p$-adic Gibbs measures of the $q$-states Potts model on the Cayley tree of order three. We prove the vastness of the periodic $p$-adic Gibbs measures for such model by showing the chaotic behavior of the correspondence Potts--Bethe mapping over $\mathbb{Q}\_p$ for $p\equiv 1 \ (\rm{mod} \ 3)$. In fact, for $0 < |θ-1|\_p < |q|\_p^2 < 1$, there exists a subsystem that isometrically conjugate to the full shift on three symbols. Meanwhile, for $0 < |q|\_p^2 \leq |θ-1|\_p < |q|\_p < 1$, there exists a subsystem that isometrically conjugate to a subshift of finite type on $r$ sy…
We discuss a method of calculating the zeta function of subshifts which have a presentation by a finite directed graph labeled by elements of the associated inverse semigroup. This class of subshifts is introduced as a class of property A subshifts(T.Hamachi, K.Inoue and W.Krieger/Subsystems of finite type and semigroup invariants of subshifts, preprint), and the Dyck shift and the Motzkin shift are representative subshifts in this class. The exact number of the periodic points and entropies are also given by this method, and these values are used in the embedding condition for an irreducible …
We consider a restricted $(N+1)$-body problem, with $N \geq 3$ and homogeneous potentials of degree $-\a<0$, $\a \in [1,2)$. We prove the existence of infinitely many collision-free periodic solutions with negative and small Jacobi constant and small values of the angular velocity, for any initial configuration of the centres. We will introduce a Maupertuis' type variational principle in order to apply the broken geodesics technique developed in the paper "N. Soave and S. Terracini. Symbolic dynamics for the $N$-centre problem at negative energies. Discrete and Cont. Dynamical Systems A, 32 (2…
We introduce "puzzles of quasi-finite type" which are the counterparts of our subshifts of quasi-finite type (Invent. Math. 159 (2005)) in the setting of combinatorial puzzles as defined in complex dynamics. We are able to analyze these dynamics defined by entropy conditions rather completely, obtaining a complete classification with respect to large entropy measures and a description of their measures with maximum entropy and periodic orbits. These results can in particular be applied to entropy-expanding maps like (x,y)-->(1.8-x^2+sy,1.9-y^2+sx) for small s. We prove in particular the meromo…
A map $f{:}\,[0,1)\to [0,1)$ is a {\it piecewise contraction of $n$ intervals} ($n$-PC) if there exist $0<λ<1$ and a partition of $[0,1)$ into intervals $I_1,\ldots,I_n$ such that $f\vert_{I_i}$ is $λ$-Lipschitz for every $1\le i\le n$. An infinite word $θ=θ_0θ_1\ldots$ over the alphabet $\mathcal{A}=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ is a {\it natural coding of} $f$ if there exists $x\in I$ such that $θ_k=i$ if and only if $f^k(x)\in I_i$. We prove that if $θ$ is a natural coding of an injective $n$-PC, then some infinite subword of $θ$ is either periodic or isomorphic to a natural coding of a topologically tra…

We consider the hydrodynamics of an incompressible fluid on a 2D periodic domain. There exists a family of stationary solutions with vorticity given by $Ω^*=α\cos (\mathbf{p} \cdot \mathbf{x} )+β\sin (\mathbf{p} \cdot \mathbf{x} )$. This situation can be approximated as a structure preserving finite dimensional Hamiltonian system by a truncation introduced by Zeitlin (1990,2005) or by the more standard Galerkin style finite element method. We use these two truncations to analyse the linear stability of these solutions and analytical and numerical results are compared. Following the methods use…
We identify the weights $wt(f_n)$ of a family $\{f_n\}$ of rotation symmetric Boolean functions with the cardinalities of the sets of $n$-periodic points of a finite-type shift, recovering the second author's result that said weights satisfy a linear recurrence. Similarly, the weights of idempotent functions $f_n$ defined on finite fields can be recovered as the cardinalities of curves over those fields and hence satisfy a linear recurrence as a consequence of the rationality of curves' zeta functions. Weil's Riemann hypothesis for curves then provides additional information about $wt(f_n)$. W…
A simple method called symbolic representation for piecewise linear functions on the real line is introduced and used to compute the numbers of periodic points of all periods for some such functions. Since, for every positive integer m, the number of periodic points of minimal period m must be divisible by m, we obtain infinitely many congruence identities.
In our earlier paper [A square root map on Sturmian words, Electron. J. Combin. 24.1 (2017)], we introduced a symbolic square root map. Every optimal squareful infinite word $s$ contains exactly six minimal squares and can be written as a product of these squares: $s = X_1^2 X_2^2 \cdots$. The square root $\sqrt{s}$ of $s$ is the infinite word $X_1 X_2 \cdots$ obtained by deleting half of each square. We proved that the square root map preserves the languages of Sturmian words (which are optimal squareful words). The dynamics of the square root map on a Sturmian subshift are well understood. I…
We prove recurrence relations and modulo periodic properties of multiple derivatives of Fibonacci polynomials. We apply the obtained results to present the dynamic structures of Fibonacci polynomials over the ring of 2-adic integers by investigating minimal decompositions which consist of minimal subsystems and attracting basins.
