The equations of the restricted three-body problem describe the motion of a massless particle under the influence of two primaries of masses $1-μ$ and $μ$, $0\leq μ\leq 1/2$, that circle each other with period equal to $2π$. When $μ=0$, the problem admits orbits for the massless particle that are ellipses of eccentricity $e$ with the primary of mass 1 located at one of the focii. If the period is a rational multiple of $2π$, denoted $2πp/q$, some of these orbits perturb to periodic motions for $μ> 0$. For typical values of $e$ and $p/q$, two resonant periodic motions are obtained for $μ> 0$. We show that the characteristic multipliers of both these motions are given by expressions of the form $1\pm\sqrt{C(e,p,q)μ}+O(μ)$ in the limit $μ\to 0$. The coefficient $C(e,p,q)$ is analytic in $e$ at $e=0$ and $C(e,p,q)=O(e^{\abs{p-q}})$. The coefficients in front of $e^{\abs{p-q}}$, obtained when $C(e,p,q)$ is expanded in powers of $e$ for the two resonant periodic motions, sum to zero. Typically, if one of the two resonant periodic motions is of elliptic type the other is of hyperbolic type. We give similar results for retrograde periodic motions and discuss periodic motions that nearly collide with the primary of mass $1-μ$.
We present a method for proving the existence of symmetric periodic, heteroclinic or homoclinic orbits in dynamical systems with the reversing symmetry. As an application we show that the Planar Restricted Circular Three Body Problem (PCR3BP) corresponding to the Sun-Jupiter-Oterma system possesses an infinite number of symmetric periodic orbits and homoclinic orbits to the Lyapunov orbits. Moreover, we show the existence of symbolic dynamics on six symbols for PCR3BP and the possibility of resonance transitions of the comet. This extends earlier results by Wilczak and Zgliczynski - Heteroclin…
Many unstable periodic orbits of the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (PCRTBP) persist as invariant tori when a periodic forcing is added to the equations of motion. In this study, we compute tori corresponding to exterior Jupiter-Europa and interior Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP resonant periodic orbits in a concentric circular restricted 4-body problem (CCR4BP). Motivated by the 2:1 Laplace resonance between Europa and Ganymede's orbits, we then attempt the continuation of a Jupiter-Europa 3:4 resonant orbit from the CCR4BP into the Jupiter-Ganymede PCRTBP. We strongly believe that the re…
In this paper, we consider a time-periodically forced Kepler problem in any dimensions, with an external force which we only assume to be regular in a neighborhood of the attractive center. We prove that there exist infinitely many periodic orbits in this system, with possible double collisions with the center regularized, which accumulate the attractive center. The result is obtained via a localization argument combined with a result on $C^{1}$-persistence of closed orbits by a local homotopy-streching argument. Consequently, by formulating the circular and elliptic restricted three-body prob…
The paper deals with the study of a satellite attracted by n primary bodies, which form a relative equilibrium. We use orthogonal degree to prove global bifurcation of planar and spatial periodic solutions from the equilibria of the satellite. In particular, we analyze the restricted three body problem and the problem of a satellite attracted by the Maxwell's ring relative equilibrium.
We study quasi-periodic tori under a normal-internal resonance, possibly with multiple eigenvalues. Two non-degeneracy conditions play a role. The first of these generalizes invertibility of the Floquet matrix and prevents drift of the lower dimensional torus. The second condition involves a Kolmogorov-like variation of the internal frequencies and simultaneously versality of the Floquet matrix unfolding. We focus on the reversible setting, but our results carry over to the Hamiltonian and dissipative contexts.
In this paper we show the existence of syzygies for all periodic orbits inside the bounded Hill's region of the planer circular restricted three-body problem with energy below the second critical value. The proof will follow some ideas of Birkhoff to compute the roots of partial derivatives of the effective potential. Birkhoff's methods are extended to higher energies and a new base case is created and shown to fulfil the requirements. An other step from Birkhoff is scrutinized to continue the statement to all mass ratios. The final step is achieved by integrating over periodic orbits. Applyin…
We review some recent progress on the research of the periodic orbits of the N-body problem, and propose a numerical scheme to determine the spatial doubly-symmetric periodic orbits (SDSPs for short). Both comet- and lunar-type SDSPs in the circular restricted three-body problem are computed, as well as the Hill-type SDSPs in Hill's lunar problem. Doubly symmetries are exploited so that the SDSPs can be computed efficiently. The monodromy matrix can be calculated by the information of one fourth period. The periodicity conditions are solved by Broyden's method with a line-search, and the algori…
In recent years, stable and unstable manifolds of invariant objects (such as libration points and periodic orbits) have been increasingly recognized as an efficient tool for designing transfer trajectories in space missions. However, most methods currently used in mission design rely on using eigenvectors of the linearized dynamics as local approximations of the manifolds. Since such approximations are not accurate except very close to the base invariant object, this requires large amounts of numerical integration to globalize the manifolds and locate intersections. In this paper, we study hyp…
We treat the circular and elliptic restricted three-body problems in inertial frames as periodically forced Kepler problems with additional singularities and explain that in this setting the main result of [4] is applicable. This guarantees the existence of an arbitrary large number of generalized periodic orbits (periodic orbits with possible double collisions regularized) provided the mass ratio of the primaries is small enough.
We consider the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in the fully resonant case (absence of the zero-mass term). We investigate conservation of small amplitude periodic-solutions for a large set measure of frequencies. In particular we show that there are infinitely many periodic solutions which continue the linear ones involving an arbitrary number of resonant modes, provided the corresponding frequencies are large enough and close enough to each other (wave packets with large wave number).
In this work we introduce a planar restricted four-body problem where a massless particle moves under the gravitational influence due to three bodies following the eight figure choreography, and we explore some symmetric periodic orbits of this system which turns out to be non autonomous. We demonstrate that certain families of involutions are reversing symmetries of certain N-body problem. We consider a particular case of such families of reversing symmetries and we use it to study both theoretically and numerically certain type of symmetric periodic orbits of this system. The symmetric perio…
We determine three invariants: Arnold's $J^+$-invariant as well as $\mathcal{J}_1$ and $\mathcal{J}_2$ invariants, which were introduced by Cieliebak-Frauenfelder-van Koert, of periodic orbits of the second kind near the heavier primary in the restricted three-body problem, provided that the mass ratio is sufficiently small.
The restricted three-body problem describes the motion of a massless particle under the influence of two primaries of masses $1-μ$ and $μ$ that circle each other with period equal to $2π$. For small $μ$, a resonant periodic motion of the massless particle in the rotating frame can be described by relatively prime integers $p$ and $q$, if its period around the heavier primary is approximately $2πp/q$, and by its approximate eccentricity $e$. We give a method for the formal development of the stable and unstable manifolds associated with these resonant motions. We prove the validity of this form…
We reconsider the classical problem of the continuation of degenerate periodic orbits in Hamiltonian systems. In particular we focus on periodic orbits that arise from the breaking of a completely resonant maximal torus. We here propose a suitable normal form construction that allows to identify and approximate the periodic orbits which survive to the breaking of the resonant torus. Our algorithm allows to treat the continuation of approximate orbits which are at leading order degenerate, hence not covered by classical averaging methods. We discuss possible future extensions and applications t…
In the restricted three-body problem, consecutive collision orbits are those orbits which start and end at collisions with one of the primaries. Interests for such orbits arise not only from mathematics but also from various engineering problems. In this article, using Floer homology, we show that there are either a periodic collisional orbit, or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem on each bounded component of the energy hypersurface for Jacobi energy below the first critical value.
We describe the families of periodic orbits in the 2-dimensional 1/2 retrograde resonance at mass ratio 0.001, analyzing their stability and bifurcations into 3-dimensional periodic orbits. We explain the role played by periodic orbits in adiabatic resonance capture, in particular how the proximity between a stable family and an unstable family with a nearly critical segment, associated with Kozai separatrices, determines the transition between distinct resonant modes observed in numerical simulations. Combining the identification of stable, critical and unstable periodic orbits with analytica…
This paper concerns the restricted 3-body problem. By applying topological methods we give a computer assisted proof of the existence of some classes of periodic orbits, the existence of symbolic dynamics and we give a rigorous lower estimate for the topological entropy.
We consider the classical problem of the continuation of periodic orbits surviving to the breaking of invariant lower dimensional resonant tori in nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems. In particular we extend our previous results (presented in CNSNS, 61:198-224, 2018) for full dimensional resonant tori to lower dimensional ones. We develop a constructive normal form scheme that allows to identify and approximate the periodic orbits which continue to exist after the breaking of the resonant torus. A specific feature of our algorithm consists in the possibility of dealing with degenerate period…
In this work we perform a numerical exploration of the families of planar periodic orbits in the Hill's approximation in the restricted four body problem, that is, after a symplectic scaling, two massive bodies are sent to infinity, by mean of expanding the potential as a power series in m3^1/3, (the mass of the third small primary) and taking the limit case when m3 tends to zero. The limiting Hamiltonian depends on a parameter mu (the mass of the second primary) and possesses some dynamical features from both the classical restricted three- body problem and the restricted four-body problem. W…
This paper constructs a certain planar four-body problem which exhibits fast energy growth. The system considered is a quasi-periodic perturbation of the Restricted Planar Circular three-body Problem (RPC3BP). Gelfreich-Turaev's and de la Llave's mechanism is employed to obtain the fast energy growth. The diffusion is created by a heteroclinic cycle formed by two Lyapunov periodic orbits surrounding $L_1$ and $L_2$ Lagrangian points and their heteroclinic intersections. Our model is the first known example in celestial mechanics of the a priori chaotic case of Arnold diffusion.
We consider a system of rotators subject to a small quasi-periodic forcing. We require the forcing to be analytic and satisfy a time-reversibility property and we assume its frequency vector to be Bryuno. Then we prove that, without imposing any non-degeneracy condition on the forcing, there exists at least one quasi-periodic solution with the same frequency vector as the forcing. The result can be interpreted as a theorem of persistence of lower-dimensional tori of arbitrary codimension in degenerate cases.
We consider 1-D quasi-periodic Frenkel-Kontorova models. We study the existence of equilibria whose frequency (i.e. the inverse of the density of deposited material) is resonant with the frequencies of the substratum. We study perturbation theory for small potential. We show that there are perturbative expansions to all orders for the quasi-periodic equilibria with resonant frequencies. Under very general conditions, we show that there are at least two such perturbative expansions for equilibria for small values of the parameter. We also develop a dynamical interpretation of the equilibria in …
We prove the existence of periodic solutions of the restricted $(2N+1)$-body problem when the $2N$-primaries move on a periodic Hip-Hop solution and the massless body moves on the line that contains the center of mass and is perpendicular to the base of the antiprism formed by the $2N$-primaries.
The planar circular restricted three body problem (PCRTBP) is symmetric with respect to the line of masses and there is a corresponding anti-symplectic involution on the cotangent bundle of the 2-sphere in the regularized PCRTBP. Recently it was shown that each bounded component of an energy hypersurface with low energy for the regularized PCRTBP is fiberwise starshaped. This enable us to define a Lagrangian Rabinowitz Floer homology which is related to periodic orbits symmetric for the anti-symplectic involution in the regularized PCRTBP and hence to symmetric periodic orbits in the unregular…
In this paper we investigate periodic FPU chains with an even number of particles. We show that near the equilibrium point, any such chain admits a \emph{resonant} Birkhoff normal form of order four which is \emph{completely integrable} - an important fact which helps explain the numerical experiments of Fermi, Pasta, and Ulam. We analyze the moment map of the integrable approximation of an even FPU chain. Unlike in the case of odd FPU chains these integrable systems (generically) exhibit hyperbolic dynamics. As an application we prove that any FPU chain with Dirichlet boundary conditions admi…
When the planar circular restricted 3-body problem (RTBP) is periodically perturbed, families of unstable periodic orbits break up into whiskered tori, with most tori persisting into the perturbed system. In this study, we 1) develop a quasi-Newton method which simultaneously solves for the tori and their center, stable, and unstable directions; 2) implement continuation by both perturbation as well as rotation numbers; 3) compute Fourier-Taylor parameterizations of the stable and unstable manifolds; 4) regularize the equations of motion; and 5) globalize these manifolds. Our methodology impro…
Since Poincaré, periodic orbits have been one of the most important objects in dynamical systems. However, searching them is in general quite difficult. A common way to find them is to construct families of periodic orbits which start at obvious periodic orbits. On the other hand, given two periodic orbits one might ask if they are connected by an orbit cylinder, i.e., by a one-parameter family of periodic orbits. In this article we study this question for a certain class of periodic orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem. Our strategy is to compare the Cieliebak-Frauenfel…
We derive a Hamiltonian version of the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describes synchronized dynamics of coupled pendula driven by a periodic movement of their common strings. In the limit of weak coupling between the pendula, we classify the existence and spectral stability of breathers (time-periodic solutions localized in the lattice) supported near one pair of coupled pendula. Orbital stability or instability of breathers is proved in a subset of the existence region.
In this paper, we consider a family of Sturm-Liouville operators on the $ω$-periodic domain. The bifurcation with respect to the parameter region is studied, and the elliptic regions are estimated by trace formula. At last, these results are used to study the linear stability of the elliptic equilibrium point along $z$-axis in Robe's restricted three-body problem.
We apply Arnold's theory of generic smooth plane curves to Stark-Zeeman systems. This is a class of Hamiltonian dynamical systems that describes the dynamics of an electron in an external electric and magnetic field, and includes many systems from celestial mechanics. Based on Arnold's $J^+$-invariant, we introduce invariants of periodic orbits in planar Stark-Zeeman systems and study their behaviour.
We consider the nonlinear string equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions $u_{xx}-u_{tt}=ϕ(u)$, with $ϕ(u)=Φu^{3} + O(u^{5})$ odd and analytic, $Φ\neq0$, and we construct small amplitude periodic solutions with frequency $ø$ for a large Lebesgue measure set of $ø$ close to 1. This extends previous results where only a zero-measure set of frequencies could be treated (the ones for which no small divisors appear). The proof is based on combining the Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition, which leads to two separate sets of equations dealing with the resonant and nonresonant Fourier components, respe…
We study non-resonant circles for strong magnetic fields on a closed, connected, oriented surface and show how these can be used to prove the existence of trapping regions and of periodic magnetic geodesics with prescribed low speed. As a corollary, there exist infinitely many periodic magnetic geodesics for every low speed in the following cases: i) the surface is not the two-sphere, ii) the magnetic field vanishes somewhere.
We will show that the period $T$ of a closed orbit of the planar circular restricted three-body problem (viewed on rotating coordinates) depends on the region it encloses. Roughly speaking, we show that, $2 T=kπ+\int_Ωg$ where $k$ is an integer, $Ω$ is the region enclosed by the periodic orbit and $g:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{R}$ is a function that only depends on the constant $C$ known as the Jacobian integral; it does not depend on $Ω$. This theorem has a Keplerian flavor in the sense that it relates the period with the space "swept" by the orbit. As an application, we prove that there is a ne…
We consider one-dimensional systems in the presence of a quasi-periodic perturbation, in the analytical setting, and study the problem of existence of quasi-periodic solutions which are resonant with the frequency vector of the perturbation. We assume that the unperturbed system is locally integrable and anisochronous, and that the frequency vector of the perturbation satisfies the Bryuno condition. Existence of resonant solutions is related to the zeroes of a suitable function, called the Melnikov function - by analogy with the periodic case. We show that, if the Melnikov function has a zero …
In a recent paper by the author (K. Yagasaki, Nonintegrability of the restricted three-body problem, submitted for publication), a technique was developed for determining whether nearly integrable systems are not meromorphically Bogoyavlenskij-integrable such that the first integrals and commutative vector fields also depend meromorphically on the small parameter. Here we continue to demonstrate the technique for some classes of dynamical systems. In particular, we consider time-periodic perturbations of single-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems and discuss a relationship of the technique w…
We consider a perturbation of a central force problem of the form \begin{equation*} \ddot x = V'(|x|) \frac{x}{|x|} + \varepsilon \,\nabla_x U(t,x), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^{2} \setminus \{0\}, \end{equation*} where $\varepsilon \in \mathbb{R}$ is a small parameter, $V\colon (0,+\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ and $U\colon \mathbb{R} \times (\mathbb{R}^{2} \setminus \{0\}) \to \mathbb{R}$ are smooth functions, and $U$ is $τ$-periodic in the first variable. Based on the introduction of suitable time-maps (the radial period and the apsidal angle) for the unperturbed problem ($\varepsilon=0$) and of an as…
The aim of the present work is to reduce the secular solution around the triangular equilibrium points to periodic solution in the frame work of the generalized restricted thee-body problem. This model is generalized in sense that both the primaries are oblate and radiating as well as the gravitational potential from a belt. We show that the linearized equation of motion of the infinitesimal body around the triangular equilibrium points has a secular solution when the value of mass ratio equals the critical mass value. Moreover, we reduce this solution to periodic solution, as well as some num…
We consider the nonlinear Schroedinger equation in higher dimension with Dirichlet boundary conditions and with a non-local smoothing nonlinearity. We prove the existence of small amplitude periodic solutions. In the fully resonant case we find solutions which at leading order are wave packets, in the sense that they continue linear solutions with an arbitrarily large number of resonant modes. The main difficulty in the proof consists in solving a "small divisor problem" which we do by using a renormalisation group approach.
We develop an a-posteriori KAM theory for the equilibrium equations for quasi-periodic solutions in a quasi-periodic Frenkel-Kontorova model when the frequency of the solutions resonates with the frequencies of the substratum. The KAM theory we develop is very different both in the methods and in the conclusions from the more customary KAM theory for Hamiltonian systems or from the KAM theory in quasi-periodic media for solutions with frequencies which are Diophantine with respect to the frequencies of the media. The main difficulty is that we cannot use transformations (as in the Hamiltonian …
