We construct certain elements in the integral motivic cohomology group $H^3_{\cal M}(E \times E',\Q(2))_{\ZZ}$, where $E$ and $E'$ are elliptic curves over $\Q$. When $E$ is not isogenous to $E'$ these elements are analogous to `cyclotomic units' in real quadratic fields as they come from modular parametrisations of the elliptic curves. We then find an analogue of the class number formula for real quadratic fields. Finally we use the Beilinson conjectures for $E \times E'$ to deduce them for products of $n$ elliptic curves. A certain amount of this paper is expository in nature.
Let K denote the quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ where d=$-1$ or $-3$. Let E be an elliptic curve defined over K. In this paper, we analyze the torsion subgroups of E in the maximal elementary abelian $2$-extension of $K$.
We prove an analogue of the Tate conjecture on homomorphisms of abelian varieties over infinite cyclotomic extensions of finitely generated fields of characteristic zero.
In this paper, we introduce a Carlitz module analogue of Mersenne primes, and prove Carlitz module analogues of several classical results concerning Mersenne primes. In contrast to the classical case, we can show that there are infinitely many composite Mersenne numbers. We also study the acquaintances of Mersenne primes including Wieferich and non-Wieferich primes in the Carlitz module context that were first introduced by Dinesh Thakur.
In this paper, we obtain a formula for the special value of Euler-Dirichlet $L$-function $L_E(s,χ)$ at $s=1$. This leads to another class number formula of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{m})^{+}$, the maximal real subfield of $m$th cyclotomic field. From this formula, we construct a new type of cyclotomic units in $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})$, which implies a similar Kummer's relation between the ideal class number of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})^{+}$ and the unit index.
An elliptic curve defined over a number field possesses only a finite number of torsion points defined over the cyclotomic closure of its field of definition. In analogy to the relative version of the Manin-Mumford conjecture stated by Masser and Zannier, we propose a family version of the above statement and prove it under a suitable integrality condition.
Let $k=2^mp^n$ for an odd prime $p$ and integers $m\ge 0$ and $n\ge 0$. We obtain lower bounds for the $ρ$-values of cyclotomic families of pairing-friendly elliptic curves with embedding degree $k$ and $r(x)=Φ_k(x)$. Our bounds imply that none of these families are ideal.
We prove that all elliptic curves defined over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a real quadratic field are modular under the assumption that the algebraic part of the central value of a twisted $L$-function is a $p$-adic unit. Our result is a generalization of a result of X. Zhang, which is a real quadratic analogue of a result of Thorne.
We introduce the notion of finite multiple harmonic q-series at a primitive root of unity and show that these specialize to the finite multiple zeta value (FMZV) and the symmetrized multiple zeta value (SMZV) through an algebraic and analytic operation, respectively. Further, we obtain families of linear relations among these series which induce linear relations among FMZVs and SMZVs of the same form. This gives evidence towards a conjecture of Kaneko and Zagier relating FMZVs and SMZVs. Motivated by the above results, we define cyclotomic analogues of FMZVs, which conjecturally generate a vec…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ where $p$ splits completely. Suppose that $E$ has good reduction at all primes above $p$. Generalizing previous works of Kobayashi and Sprung, we define multiply signed Selmer groups over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a finite extension $F$ of $K$ where $p$ is unramified. Under the hypothesis that the Pontryagin duals of these Selmer groups are torsion over the corresponding Iwasawa algebra, we show that the Mordell-Weil ranks of $E$ over a subextension of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension are bounded. Furthermore,…
In a previous paper, the author examined the possible torsions of an elliptic curve over the quadratic fields $\mathbb Q(i)$ and $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-3})$. Although all the possible torsions were found if the elliptic curve has rational coefficients, we were unable to eliminate some possibilities for the torsion if the elliptic curve has coefficients that are not rational. In this note, by finding all the points of two hyperelliptic curves over $\mathbb Q(i)$ and $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{-3})$, we solve this problem completely and thus obtain a classification of all possible torsions of elliptic curves o…
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ or $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ and let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$. We study how the torsion part of an elliptic curve over $K$ grows in a quadratic extension of $K$. In the case $E(K)[2] \approx C_2 \oplus C_2$ we determine how a given torsion structure can grow in a quadratic extension and the maximum number of quadratic extensions in which it grows. We also classify the torsion structures which occur as the quadratic twist of a given torsion structure.
In the case $E(K)[2] \approx C_1$ we investigate how a given torsion structure can grow in a quadratic extension and the maximum number of extensions in which it grows. We also study the torsion structures which occur as the quadratic twist of a given torsion structure. In order to achieve this we examine $N$-isogenies defined over $K$ for $N=15,20,21,24,27,30,35$.
In this article, we study a relation between certain quotients of ideal class groups and the cyclotomic Iwasawa module $X_\infty$ of the Pontrjagin dual of the fine Selmer group of an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We consider the Galois extension field $K^E_n$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ generated by coordinates of all $p^n$-torsion points of $E$, and introduce a quotient $A^E_n$ of the $p$-sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of $K^E_n$ cut out by the modulo $p^n$ Galois representation $E[p^n]$. We describe the asymptotic behavior of $A^E_n$ by using the Iwasawa module $X_\infty$. In p…
We formulate and for the most part prove a conjecture in the style of Mazur-Greenberg for the nonvanishing of central values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions attached to elliptic curves in abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields. This in particular generalizes the theorem of Rohrlich on $L$-functions of elliptic curves in cyclotomic towers to the setting of abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, corresponding to families of degree-four $L$-functions given by $\operatorname{GL}(2)\times\operatorname{GL}(2)$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions. It also generalizes the theorems of Roh…
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, and let $\mathcal{O}$ be the ring of integers of $K$. The prime $2$ splits in $K$, say $2\mathcal{O} = \mathfrak{p} \mathfrak{p}^\ast$, and there is a unique $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension $K_\infty$ of $K$, which is unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Let $H$ be the Hilbert class field of $K$, and write $H_\infty = HK_\infty$. Let $M(H_\infty)$ be the maximal abelian $2$-extension of $H_\infty$, which is unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and put $X(H_\infty) = \mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\inf…
Following the prequel work \cite{VO3}, we prove a generalization of "Mazur's conjecture" for $L$-functions of elliptic curves in abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields, including the assertion that the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve in the ${\bf{Z}}_p^2$-extension is finitely generated modulo Heegner points. The novelty of the approach here is to use the existence of a suitable $p$-adic $L$-function to reduce the problem to a minimal nonvanishing criterion, which should be applicable to a broader class of problems than considered here.
Modular Galois representations into GL_2(F_p) with cyclotomic determinant arise from elliptic curves for p = 2,3,5. We show (by constructing explicit examples) that such elliptic curves cannot be chosen to have conductor as small as possible at all primes other than p. Our proof involves finding all elliptic curves of conductor 85779, a custom computation carried out for us by Cremona. This leads to a counterexample to a conjecture of Lario and Rio. For p > 5, we construct irreducible representations with cyclotomic determinant that do not arise from any elliptic curve over Q.
Rosen M. gave a determinant formula for relative class numbers for the P-th cyclotomic function fields in the case of the monic irreducible polynomial P, which is regarded as an analogue of the classical Maillet determinant. In this paper, we will give a determinant formula for the relative congruence zeta functions for cyclotomic function fields. Our formula is regarded as a generalization of the determinant formula for the relative class number.
Given a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over an arithmetic surface, one obtains a lisse $\ell$-adic sheaf of rank two over the surface. This lisse sheaf has a number of straightforward properties: cyclotomic determinant, finite ramification, rational traces of Frobenius, and somewhere not potentially good reduction. We prove that any lisse sheaf of rank two possessing these properties comes from an elliptic curve.
We develop a cyclotomic analogue of the theory of associators. Using a trigonometric version of the universal KZ equations, we prove the formality of a morphism B_n^1 -> (ZZ/N ZZ)^n rtimes S_n, where B_n^1 is a braid group of type B. The formality isomorphism depends algebraically on a series Psi_KZ, the ``KZ pseudotwist''. We study the scheme of pseudotwists and show that it is a torsor under a group GTM(N,k), mapping to Drinfeld's group GT(k), and whose Lie algebra is isomorphic to its associated graded grtm(N,k). We prove that Ihara's subgroup GTK of the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group, defi…
Let $Y_K\to X_K$ be a ramified cyclic covering of curves, where $K$ is a cyclotomic field. In this work we study the $p$-rank of the reduction $\rm{mod}\, p$ of a model of the jacobian of $Y_K$. In this way, we obtain counterparts of the Deuring polynomial, defined for elliptic curves, for genus greater than one. Moreover, we show that curves $Y_K$ give Hecke characters for cyclotomic fields. To carry out this study we use Jacobi sums and certain $L$-functions.
This is a translation of a research announcement by Anas G. Nasybullin from 1976, in which he states formulas for the p-primary part of the Tate-Shafarevich group of an elliptic curve in cyclotomic $\Z_p$-extensions of number fields.
We pick up the study of 13-torsion in elliptic curves where Mazur and Tate left off 45 years ago. We consider various questions concerning elliptic curves defined over the maximal totally real subfield of the 13th cyclotomic field (where J_1(13) acquires everywhere good reduction), and over quadratic extensions.
We consider higher-dimensional analogues of the classical Brauer-Siegel theorem focusing on the case of abelian varieties over global function fields. We prove such an analogue in the case of constant families of elliptic curves and abelian varieties.
In this paper we show that the map % $$\partial:CH^2(E_1 \times E_2,1)\otimes \Q \longrightarrow PCH^1(\XX_v)$$ % is surjective, where $E_1$ and $E_2$ are two non-isogenous semistable elliptic curves over a local field, $CH^2(E_1 \times E_2,1)$ is one of Bloch's higher Chow groups and $PCH^1(\XX_v)$ is a certain subquotient of a Chow group of the special fibre $\XX_{v}$ of a semi-stable model $\XX$ of $E_1 \times E_2$. On one hand, this can be viewed as a non-Archimedean analogue of the Hodge-$\D$-conjecture of Beilinson - which is known to be true in this case by the work of Chen and Lewis \c…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with good ordinary reduction at all primes above $p$, and let $F_\infty$ be a finitely ramified uniform pro-$p$ extension of $F$ containing the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $F_{cyc}$. Set $F^{(n)}$ be the $n$-th layer of the tower, and $F^{(n)}_{cyc}$ the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F^{(n)}$. We study the growth of the rank of $E(F^{(n)})$ by analyzing the growth of the $λ$-invariant of the Selmer group over $F^{(n)}_{cyc}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. This method has its origins in work of A.Cuoco, who studied $\math…
This paper aims at studying the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant of the $p$-primary Selmer group. We study the growth behaviour of $p$-primary Selmer groups in $p$-power degree extensions over non-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of a number field. We prove a generalization of Kida's formula in such a case. Unlike the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, where all primes are finitely decomposed; in the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions we consider, primes may be infinitely decomposed. In the second part of the paper, we study the relationship for Iwasawa invariants with respect to congruences, obtaining refi…
We obtain new elliptic function identities, which are an elliptic analogue of Fukuhara's trigonometric identities. We show that the coefficients of Laurent expansions at $z=0$ of our elliptic identities give rise to some reciprocity laws for elliptic Dedekind sums.
The level $N$ elliptic KZB connection is a flat connection over the universal elliptic curve in level $N$ with its $N$-torsion sections removed. Its fiber over the point $(E,x)$ is the unipotent completion of $π_1(E - E[N],x)$. It was constructed by Calaque and Gonzalez. In this paper, we show that the connection underlies an admissible variation of mixed Hodge structure and that it degenerates to the cyclotomic KZ connection over the singular fibers of the compactified universal elliptic curve. These are the first steps in a larger project to compute the action of the Galois group of mixed Ta…
We calculate an explicit lower bound on the proportion of elliptic curves that are modular over any Galois CM field not containing $ζ_5$. Applied to imaginary quadratic fields, this proportion is at least $2/5$. Applied to cyclotomic fields $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n)$ with $5\nmid n$, this proportion is at least $1-\varepsilon$ with only finitely many exceptions of $n$, for any choice of $\varepsilon > 0$.
Given an elliptic curve E over a number field k, the Galois action on the torsion points of E induces a Galois representation, ρ_E : Gal(\bar{k}/k) \to GL_2(\hat{Z}). For a fixed number field k, we describe the image of ρ_E for a "random" elliptic curve E over k. In particular, if k\neq Q is linearly disjoint from the cyclotomic extension of Q, then ρ_E will be surjective for "most" elliptic curves over k.
In this paper, using p-adic integration with values in spaces of modular forms, we construct the p-adic analogue of Weil's elliptic functions according to Eisenstein in the book "Elliptic functions according to Eisenstein and and Kronecker". This construction extends Serre's p-adic family of Eisenstein series in "Formes modulaires et fonctions zêta p-adiques". We show that the power series expansion of Weil's elliptic functions also exists in the p-adic case.
We study the Fitting ideals over the finite layers of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ of Selmer groups attached to the Rankin--Selberg convolution of two modular forms $f$ and $g$. Inspired by the Theta elements for modular forms defined by Mazur and Tate in ``Refined conjectures of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type'', we define new Theta elements for Rankin--Selberg convolutions of $f$ and $g$ using Loeffler--Zerbes' geometric $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to $f$ and $g$. Under certain technical hypotheses, we generalize a recent work of Kim--Kurihara on elliptic cu…
In this paper we will give a global description of the Frobenius for the division fields of an elliptic curve E which is strictly analogous to the cyclotomic case. This is then applied to determine the splitting of a prime p in subfields of such a division field. Such fields include a large class of non-solvable quintic extensions and our application provides an arithmetic counterpart to Klein's "solution" of quintic equations using elliptic functions. A central role is played by the discriminant of the ring of endomorphisms of the elliptic curve reduced modulo p.
We present new ideas for computing elliptic Gauß sums, which constitute an analogue of the classical cyclotomic Gauß sums and whose use has been proposed in the context of counting points on elliptic curves and primality tests. By means of certain well-known modular functions we define the universal elliptic Gauß sums and prove they admit an efficiently computable representation in terms of the $j$-invariant and another modular function. After that, we show how this representation can be used for obtaining the elliptic Gauß sum associated to an elliptic curve over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$…
We prove a function field analogue of the Herbrand-Ribet theorem on cyclotomic number fields. The Herbrand-Ribet theorem can be interpreted as a result about cohomology with $μ_p$-coefficients over the splitting field of $μ_p$, and in our analogue both occurrences of $μ_p$ are replaced with the $\mathfrak{p}$-torsion scheme of the Carlitz module for a prime $\mathfrak{p}$ in $\F_q[t]$.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a number field k. In this paper, we define the ``global discrepancy'' of a finite set Z of algebraic points on E which in a precise sense measures how far the set is from being adelically equidistributed. We then prove an upper bound for the global discrepancy of Z in terms of the average canonical height of points in Z. We deduce from this inequality a number of consequences. For example, we give a new and simple proof of the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang equidistribution theorem for elliptic curves. We also prove a non-archimedean version of the Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhan…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve. For a prime $p$ of good reduction, let $r(E,p)$ be the smallest non-negative integer that gives the $x$-coordinate of a point of maximal order in the group $E(\mathbb{F}_p)$. We prove unconditionally that $r(E,p)> 0.72\log\log p$ for infinitely many $p$, and $r(E,p) > 0.36 \log p$ under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. This can be viewed as elliptic curve analogues of classical lower bounds on the least primitive root of a prime.
Let p be an odd prime. Suppose that E is a modular elliptic curve/Q with good ordinary reduction at p. Let Q_{oo} denote the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of Q. It is conjectured that Sel_E(Q_{oo}) is a cotorsion Lambda-module and that its characteristic ideal is related to the p-adic L-function associated to E. Under certain hypotheses we prove that the validity of these conjectures is preserved by congruences between the Fourier expansions of the associated modular forms.
In this article, we provide a relation between the $μ$-invariants of the dual plus and minus Selmer groups for supersingular elliptic curves when we ascend from the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension to a $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension over an imaginary quadratic field. Furthermore we show that the supersingular $\mathfrak{M}_H(G)$-conjecture is equivalent to the fact that the $μ$-invariants doesn't change as we go up the tower.
We prove an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem for the Legendre elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. More precisely, if $d$ is an integer coprime to $q$, we denote by $E_d$ the elliptic curve with model $y^2=x(x+1)(x+t^d)$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We give an asymptotic estimate of the product of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E_d$ (which is known to be finite) with its Néron-Tate regulator, in terms of the exponential differential height of $E_d$, as $d\to\infty$.
Let $E$ be a field of characteristic $p$. The group $\mathbf{Z}_p^\times$ acts on $E((X))$ by $a \cdot f(X) = f((1+X)^a-1)$. This action extends to the $X$-adic completion $\tilde{\mathbf{E}}$ of $\cup_{n \geq 0} E((X^{1/p^n}))$. We show how to recover $E((X))$ from the valued $E$-vector space $\tilde{\mathbf{E}}$ endowed with its action of $\mathbf{Z}_p^\times$. To do this, we introduce the notion of super-Hölder vector in certain $E$-linear representations of $\mathbf{Z}_p$. This is a characteristic $p$ analogue of the notion of locally analytic vector in $p$-adic Banach representations of $…
