In this paper we will give a global description of the Frobenius for the division fields of an elliptic curve E which is strictly analogous to the cyclotomic case. This is then applied to determine the splitting of a prime p in subfields of such a division field. Such fields include a large class of non-solvable quintic extensions and our application provides an arithmetic counterpart to Klein's "solution" of quintic equations using elliptic functions. A central role is played by the discriminant of the ring of endomorphisms of the elliptic curve reduced modulo p.
For various positive integers $n$, we show the existence of infinite families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $n$-division fields, $\mathbb{Q}(E[n])$, that are not monogenic, i.e., the ring of integers does not admit a power integral basis. We parametrize some of these families explicitly. Moreover, we show that every $E/\mathbb{Q}$ without CM has infinitely many non-monogenic division fields. Our main technique combines a global description of the Frobenius obtained by Duke and Tóth with a simple algorithm based on ideas of Dedekind.
A prime number $p$ is said to be irregular if it divides the class number of the $p$-th cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{p}) = \mathbb{Q}(\mathbb{G}_m[p])$. In this paper, we study its elliptic analogue for the division fields of an elliptic curve. More precisely, for a prime number $p \geq 5$ and a positive integer $n$, we study the $p$-divisibility of the class number of the $p^{n}$-division field $\mathbb{Q}(E[p^{n}])$ of an elliptic curve $E$ of the form $y^{2} = x^{3}-(s^{4}+t^{2})x$. In particular, we construct a certain infinite subfamily consisting of curves with novel properties that t…
For every elliptic curve $E$ which has complex multiplication (CM) and is defined over a number field $F$ containing the CM field $K$, we prove that the family of $p^{\infty}$-division fields of $E$, with $p \in \mathbb{N}$ prime, becomes linearly disjoint over $F$ after removing an explicit finite subfamily of fields. We then give a necessary condition for this finite subfamily to be entangled over $F$, which is always met when $F = K$. In this case, and under the further assumption that the elliptic curve $E$ is obtained as a base-change from $\mathbb{Q}$, we describe in detail the entanglem…
One of the many interesting algebraic objects associated to a given rational elliptic curve, $E$, is its full-torsion representation $ρ_E:\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbf{Q}}/\mathbf{Q})\to\mathrm{GL}_2(\hat{\mathbf{Z}})$. Generalizing this idea, one can create another full-torsion Galois representation, $ρ_{(E_1,E_2)}:\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbf{Q}}/\mathbf{Q})\to\left(\mathrm{GL}_2(\hat{\mathbf{Z}})\right)^2$ associated to a pair $(E_1,E_2)$ of rational elliptic curves. The goal of this paper is to provide an infinite number of concrete examples of pairs of elliptic curves whose associated full-torsi…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic different from $2$ and let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $K$, defined either by an equation of the form $y^{2} = f(x)$ with degree $3$ or as the Jacobian of a curve defined by an equation of the form $y^{2} = f(x)$ with degree $4$. We obtain generators over $K$ of the $8$-division field $K(E[8])$ of $E$ given as formulas in terms of the roots of the polynomial $f$, and we explicitly describe the action of a particular automorphism in $\mathrm{Gal}(K(E[8]) / K)$.
Let $k$ be a global field, let $A$ be a Dedekind domain with $\text{Quot}(A) = k$, and let $K$ be a finitely generated field. Using a unified approach for both elliptic curves and Drinfeld modules $M$ defined over $K$ and having a trivial endomorphism ring, with $k= \mathbb{Q}$, $A = \mathbb{Z}$ in the former case and $k$ a global function field, $A$ its ring of functions regular away from a fixed prime in the latter case, for any nonzero ideal $\mathfrak{a} \lhd A$ we prove best possible estimates in the norm $|\mathfrak{a}|$ for the degrees over $K$ of the subfields of the $\mathfrak{a}$-div…
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a CM elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$, with Weiestrass form $y^3=x^3+bx$ or $y^2=x^3+c$. For every positive integer $m$, we denote by ${\mathcal{E}}[m]$ the $m$-torsion subgroup of ${\mathcal{E}}$ and by $K_m:=K({\mathcal{E}}[m])$ the $m$-th division field, i.e. the extension of $K$ generated by the coordinates of the points in ${\mathcal{E}}[m]$. We classify all fields $K_7$. In particular we give explicit generators for $K_7/K$ and produce all Galois groups ${\textrm{Gal}}(K_7/K)$. We also show some applications to the Local-Global Divisibility Problem and …
We discuss a non-computational elementary approach to a well-known criterion of divisibility by 2 in the group of rational points on an elliptic curve.
Assuming Lang's conjectured lower bound on the heights of non-torsion points on an elliptic curve, we show that there exists an absolute constant C such that for any elliptic curve E/Q and non-torsion point P in E(Q), there is at most one integral multiple [n]P such that n > C. The proof is a modification of a proof of Ingram giving an unconditional but not uniform bound. The new ingredient is a collection of explicit formulae for the sequence of valuations of the division polynomials. For P of non-singular reduction, such sequences are already well described in most cases, but for P of singul…
It is proved in this paper that for any point on an elliptic curve, the mean value of x-coordinates of its n-division points is the same as its x-coordinate and that of y-coordinates of its n-division points is n times of its y-coordinate.
We investigate some aspects of the $m$-division field $K({\mathcal{E}}[m])$, where $\mathcal{E}$ is an elliptic curve defined over a field $K$ with ${\textrm{char}}(K)\neq 2,3$ and $m$ is a positive integer. When $m=p^r$, with $p\geq 5$ a prime and $r$ a positive integer, we prove $K(\mathcal{E}[p^r])=K(x_1,ζ_p,y_2)$, where $\{(x_1, y_1),(x_2,y_2)\}$ is a generating system of ${\mathcal{E}}[p^r]$ and $ζ_p$ is a primitive $p$-th root of the unity. If $\mathcal{E}$ has a $K$-rational point of order $p$, then $K(\mathcal{E}[p^r])=K(ζ_{p^r},\sqrt[m_1]{a})$, with $a\in K(ζ_{p^r})$ and $m_1|p^r$. In…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $ρ_E\colon {\rm Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})\to {\rm GL}(2,\widehat{ \mathbb{Z} })$ be the adelic representation associated to the natural action of Galois on the torsion points of $E(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$. By a theorem of Serre, the image of $ρ_{E}$ is open, but the image is always of index at least $2$ in ${\rm GL}(2,\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$ due to a certain quadratic entanglement amongst division fields. In this paper, we study other types of abelian entanglements. More concretely, we classify the elliptic curves $E/\…
For a given point P in the group of K-rational points E(K) of an elliptic curve, we consider the sequence of values (F_1(P),F_2(P),F_3(P),...) of the division polynomials of E at P. If K is a finite field, we prove that the sequence is periodic. If K/Q_p is a local field, we prove (under certain hypotheses) that there is a power q=p^e so that for all m > 0, the limit as k goes to infinity of F_{mq^{k}}(P) exists in K and is algebraic over Q(E). We apply this result to prove an analogous p-adic limit and algebraicity result for elliptic divisibility sequences.
Starting from the classical division polynomials we construct homogeneous polynomials $α_n$, $β_n$, $γ_n$ such that for $P = (x:y:z)$ on an elliptic curve in Weierstrass form over an arbitrary ring we have $nP = \bigl(α_n(P):β_n(P):γ_n(P)\bigr)$. To show that $α_n,β_n,γ_n$ indeed have this property we use the a priori existence of such polynomials, which we deduce from the Theorem of the Cube. We then use this result to show that the equations defining the modular curve $Y_1(n)_{\mathbb C}$ computed for example by Baaziz, in fact are equations of $Y_1(n)$ over $\mathbb Z[1/n]$.
Consider an elliptic curve $E$ over a number field $K$. Suppose that $E$ has supersingular reduction at some prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ lying above the rational prime $p$. We completely classify the valuations of the $p^n$-torsion points of $E$ by the valuation of a coefficient of the $p^{\text{th}}$ division polynomial. We apply this description to find the minimum necessary ramification at $\mathfrak{p}$ in order for $E$ to have a point of exact order $p^n$. Using this bound we show that sporadic points on the modular curve $X_1(p^n)$ cannot correspond to supersingular elliptic curves witho…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a finite field $k$, and $\ell$ a prime number different from the characteristic of $k$. In this paper we consider the problem of finding the structure of the Tate module $T_\ell(E)$ as an integral Galois representations of $k$. We indicate an explicit procedure to solve this problem starting from the characteristic polynomial $f_E(x)$ and the $j$-invariant $j_E$ of $E$. Hilbert Class Polynomials of imaginary quadratic orders play here an important role. We give a global application to the study of prime-splitting in torsion fields of elliptic curves over numbe…
We partially answer, in terms of monodromy, Murty and Patankar's question: Given an absolutely simple abelian variety over a number field, does it have simple specializations at a set of places of positive Dirichlet density? The answer is based on the classification of pairs (G,V) consisting of a semi-simple algebraic group G over a non-archimedean local field and an absolutely irreducible representation V of G such that G admits a maximal torus acting irreducibly on V.
L. Szpiro and T. Tucker recently proved that under mild conditions, the valuation of the minimal discriminant of an elliptic curve with semistable reduction over a discrete valuation ring can be expressed in terms of intersections between n-torsion and 2-torsion, where n tends to infinity. The argument of Szpiro and Tucker is geometric in nature. We give a proof based on the arithmetic of division polynomials, and generalize the result to the case of hyperelliptic curves.
Let $Y$ be a principal homogeneous space of an abelian surface, or a K3 surface, over a finitely generated extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In 2008, Skorobogatov and Zarhin showed that the Brauer group modulo algebraic classes $\text{Br}\, Y/ \text{Br}_1\, Y$ is finite. We study this quotient for the family of surfaces that are geometrically isomorphic to a product of isogenous non-CM elliptic curves, as well as the related family of geometrically Kummer surfaces; both families can be characterized by their geometric Néron-Severi lattices. Over a field of characteristic $0$, we prove that the existe…
In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of entanglements of division fields from a group theoretic perspective. For a positive integer $n$ and a subgroup $G\subseteq \text{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/{n}\mathbb{Z})$ with surjective determinant, we provide a definition for $G$ to represent an $(a,b)$-entanglement and give additional criteria for $G$ to represent an explained or unexplained $(a,b)$-entanglement. Using these new definitions, we determine the tuples $((p,q),T)$, with $p<q\in\mathbb{Z}$ distinct primes and $T$ a finite group, such that there are infinitely many non-$\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$-is…
Let E be an elliptic curve over Q, and let n=>1. The central object of study of this article is the division field Q(E[n]) that results by adjoining to Q the coordinates of all n-torsion points on E(Q). In particular, we classify all curves E/Q such that Q(E[n]) is as small as possible, that is, when Q(E[n])=Q(zeta_n), and we prove that this is only possible for n=2,3,4, or 5. More generally, we classify all curves such that Q(E[n]) is contained in a cyclotomic extension of Q or, equivalently (by the Kronecker-Weber theorem), when Q(E[n])/Q is an abelian extension. In particular, we prove that…
Using a multidimensional large sieve inequality, we obtain a bound for the mean square error in the Chebotarev theorem for division fields of elliptic curves that is as strong as what is implied by the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. As an application we prove a theorem to the effect that, according to height, almost all elliptic curves are Serre curves, where a Serre curve is an elliptic curve whose torsion subgroup, roughly speaking, has as much Galois symmetry as possible.
Given two elliptic curves, each of which is associated with a projection map that identifies opposite elements with respect to the natural group structure, we investigate how their corresponding projective images of torsion points intersect.
Using the rank of the Mordell-Weil group $E(\mathbb{Q})$ of an elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, we give a lower bound of the class number of the number field $\mathbb{Q}(E[p^n])$ generated by $p^n$-division points of $E$ when the curve $E$ does not possess a $p$-adic point of order $p$: $E(\mathbb{Q}_p)[p] =0$.

For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a number field $K$, the heuristic density of the set of primes of $K$ for which $E$ has cyclic reduction is given by an inclusion-exclusion sum $δ_{E/K}$ involving the degrees of the $m$-division fields $K_m$ of $E$ over $K$. This density can be proved to be correct under assumption of GRH. For $E$ without complex multiplication (CM), we show that $δ_{E/K}$ is the product of an explicit non-negative rational number reflecting the finite entanglement of the division fields of $E$ and a universal infinite Artin-type product. For $E$ admitting CM over $K$ by…
Let E: y^2 = x^3 + Ax + B be an elliptic curve defined over a finite field of characteristic p\geq 3. In this paper we prove that the coefficient at x^{p(p-1)/2} in the p-th division polynomial ψ_p(x) of E equals the coefficient at x^{p-1} in (x^3 + Ax + B)^{(p-1)/2}. The first coefficient is zero if and only if the division polynomial has no roots, which is equivalent to E being supersingular. Deuring (1941) proved that this supersingularity is also equivalent to the vanishing of the second coefficient. So the zero loci of the coefficients (as functions of A and B) are equal; the main result …
For an elliptic curve $E$ over a finite field $\F_q$, where $q$ is a prime power, we propose new algorithms for testing the supersingularity of $E$. Our algorithms are based on the Polynomial Identity Testing (PIT) problem for the $p$-th division polynomial of $E$. In particular, an efficient algorithm using points of high order on $E$ is given.
We prove new results on splitting Brauer classes by genus 1 curves, settling in particular the case of degree 7 classes over global fields. Though our method is cohomological in nature, and proceeds by considering the more difficult problem of splitting $μ_N$-gerbes, we use crucial input from the arithmetic of modular curves and explicit $N$-descent on elliptic curves.
There are 3 examples in these notes. The first one is the standard example of the cubic resolvent of a quartic. The second example is exactly from Adelmann \cite{Adelmann} and gives a defining polynomial corresponding to the unique $S_4$-quotient of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/4\mathbb{Z})$. The splitting field of the Adelmann polynomial over $\mathbb{Q}$ is a subfield of the 4-division field of an elliptic curve, that contains the 2-division field of the elliptic curve. The third example is new and needed in the study of the field theory of quaternion origami. Associated to an elliptic curve de…
We consider partial torsion fields (fields generated by a root of a division polynomial) for elliptic curves. By analysing the reduction properties of elliptic curves, and applying the Montes Algorithm, we obtain information about the ring of integers. In particular, for the partial $3$-torsion fields for a certain one-parameter family of non-CM elliptic curves, we describe a power basis. As a result, we show that the one-parameter family of quartic $S_4$ fields given by $T^4 - 6T^2 - αT - 3$ for $α\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $α\pm 8$ are squarefree, are monogenic.
In this work we generalize the concept of injective module and develop a theory of divisibility for modules over a general ring, which provides a general and unified framework to study Kummer-like field extensions arising from commutative algebraic groups. With these tools we provide an effective bound for the degree of the field extensions arising from division points of elliptic curves, extending previous results of Javan Peykar for CM curves and of Lombardo and the author for the non-CM case.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a field $K$ (with $char(K)\neq 2$) given by a Weierstrass equation and let $P=(x,y)\in E(K)$ be a point. Then for each $n$ $\geq 1$ and some $γ\in K^{\ast }$ we can write the $x$- and $y$-coordinates of the point $[n]P$ as \begin{equation*} \lbrack n]P=\left( \frac{ϕ_n(P)}{ψ_n^2(P)}, \frac{ω_n(P) }{ψ_n^3(P)} \right) =\left( \frac{γ^2 G_n(P)}{F_n^2(P)}, \frac{γ^3 H_n(P)}{F_n^3(P)}\right) \end{equation*} where $ϕ_n,ψ_n,ω_n \in K[x,y]$, $\gcd (ϕ_n,ψ_n^2)=1$ and \begin{equation*} F_n(P) = γ^{1-n^2}ψ_n(P), G_n(P) = γ^{-2n^{2}}ϕ_{n}(P),H_{n}(P) = γ^{-3n^{2}}…
This paper presents a new result concerning the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve over an arbitrary number field K with a single point of order two that does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over its two-division field. We prove that at least half of all the quadratic twists of such an elliptic curve have arbitrarily large 2-Selmer rank, showing that the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of such an elliptic curve differs from the distribution of 2-Selmer ranks in the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve having…

Let $A$ be a semistable abelian variety defined over ${\bf Q}$ with bad reduction only at one prime $p$. Let $L= {\bf Q}(A[\ell])$ be the $\ell$-division field of $A$ for a prime $\ell$ not equal to $p$ and let $F={\bf Q}(μ_\ell)$ be the cyclotomic field generated by the group of $\ell^{th}$-roots of unity. We study the varieties $A$ for which $H={\rm Gal(L/F)}$ is "small" in the sense that $H$ is an $\ell$-group or, more generally, that $H$ is nilpotent. We show that if $\ell=2$ or 3 and $H$ is nilpotent then the reduction of $A$ at $p$ is totally toroidal, so its conductor is $p^{\dim A}$. T…
We compute explicit equations for the surfaces Z(17,1) and Z(17,3) parametrising pairs of $17$-congruent elliptic curves. We find that each is a double cover of the same elliptic K3-surface. We use these equations to exhibit the first non-trivial example of a pair of symplectically 17-congruent elliptic curves over the rationals. We also compute the corresponding genus 2 curve whose Jacobian has a $(17,17)$-splitting.
Using the division polynomials for elliptic curves in Weierstrass form, it shown that the group of rational points on the curve $H: ky(yy - 1) = lx(xx - 1)$ is torsion-free.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $K$ without complex multiplication. If $Γ\subset E(\overline{K})$ is a subgroup of finite rank, a very special case of a conjecture of Rémond predicts that points of small height in $E(K(Γ))$ lie in the division group of $Γ$. Using an equidistribution argument, we will show that this conjecture is true for groups of rank arbitrarily large.
