Let $A$ be a semistable abelian variety defined over ${\bf Q}$ with bad reduction only at one prime $p$. Let $L= {\bf Q}(A[\ell])$ be the $\ell$-division field of $A$ for a prime $\ell$ not equal to $p$ and let $F={\bf Q}(μ_\ell)$ be the cyclotomic field generated by the group of $\ell^{th}$-roots of unity. We study the varieties $A$ for which $H={\rm Gal(L/F)}$ is "small" in the sense that $H$ is an $\ell$-group or, more generally, that $H$ is nilpotent.
We show that if $\ell=2$ or 3 and $H$ is nilpotent then the reduction of $A$ at $p$ is totally toroidal, so its conductor is $p^{\dim A}$. The Jacobian of the modular curve $X_0(41)$ is a simple semistable abelian variety of dimension 3, with bad reduction only at $p=41$ and the Galois group of its 2-division field is a 2-group.
For $\ell=2$, 3 or 5, there exist elliptic curves $E$ of prime conductor such that ${\bf Q}(E[\ell]) = {\bf Q}(μ_{2 \ell})$. We characterize the abelian varieties that are isogenous to products $E^d$.
We prove the Iwasawa main conjecture over the arithmetic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension for semistable abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic $p>0$.
Continuing on from recent results of Brumer-Kramer and of Schoof, we show that there exist non-zero semistable Abelian varieties over Z[1/N], with N squarefree, if and only if N is not in the set {1,2,3,5,6,7,10,13}. Our results are contingent on the GRH discriminant bounds of Odlyzko.
We study the arithmetic of division fields of semistable abelian varieties A over the rationals. The Galois group of the 2-division field of A is analyzed when the conductor is odd and squarefree. The irreducible semistable mod 2 representations of small conductor are determined under GRH. These results are used in "Paramodular abelian varieties of odd conductor," arXiv:1004.4699.
We completely solve a problem of S. Zhang about the positivity of a normalized height on the moduli space of semistable varieties of given degree and given dimension.
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.
We investigate the behaviour of Tamagawa numbers of semistable principally polarised abelian varieties in extensions of local fields. In view of the Raynaud parametrisation, this translates into a purely algebraic problem concerning the number of $H$-invariant points on a quotient of $C_n$-lattices $Λ/eΛ'$ for varying subgroups $H$ of $C_n$ and integers $e$. In particular, we give a simple formula for the change of Tamagawa numbers in totally ramified extensions (corresponding to varying $e$) and one that computes Tamagawa numbers up to rational squares in general extensions. As an application…
Let $A$ be a semistable principally polarized abelian variety of dimension $d$ defined over the rationals. Let $\ell$ be a prime and let $\barρ_{A,\ell} : G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GSp}_{2d}(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$ be the representation giving the action of $G_{\mathrm{Q}} :=\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathrm{Q}}/\mathrm{Q})$ on the $\ell$-torsion group $A[\ell]$. We show that if $\ell \ge \max(5,d+2)$, and if image of $\barρ_{A,\ell}$ contains a transvection then $\barρ_{A,\ell}$ is either reducible or surjective. With the help of this we study surjectivity of $\barρ_{A,\ell}$ for semistable princi…
We define an overconvergent version of the Hyodo-Kato complex for semistable varieties $Y$ over perfect fields of positive characteristic, and prove that its hypercohomology tensored with $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers the log-rigid cohomology when $Y$ is quasi-projective. We then describe the monodromy operator using the overconvergent Hyodo-Kato complex. Finally, we show that overconvergent Hyodo-Kato cohomology agrees with log-crystalline cohomology in the projective semistable case.
We prove that for N=6 and N=10, there do not exist any non-zero semistable abelian varieties over Q with good reduction outside primes dividing N. Our results are contingent on the GRH discriminant bounds of Odlyzko. Combined with recent results of Brumer--Kramer and of Schoof, this result is best possible: if N is squarefree, there exists a non-zero semistable abelian variety over Q with good reduction outside primes dividing N precisely when N is not in the set {1,2,3,5,6,7,10,13}.
In this paper we prove a comparison theorem between the category of certain modules with integrable connection on the complement of a normal crossing divisor of the generic fiber of a proper semistable variety over a DVR and the category of certain log overconvergent isocystrals on the special fiber of the same open.
This paper is a complement to the paper "On $p$-adic differential equations on semistable varieties" written by V. Di Proietto. Given an open variety over a DVR with semistable reduction, the author constructed in that paper a fully faithful algebraization functor from the category of certain log overconvergent isocrystals on the special fiber to the category of modules with regular integrable connection on the generic fiber. In this paper, we prove that, with convenable hypothesis, this functor is a tensor functor whose essential image is closed under extensions and subquotients. As a consequ…
In our previous study of duality for complete discrete valuation fields with perfect residue field, we treated coefficients in finite flat group schemes. In this paper, we treat abelian varieties. This in particular implies Grothendieck's conjecture on the perfectness of his pairing between the Neron component groups of an abelian variety and its dual. The point is that our formulation is well-suited with Galois descent. From the known case of semistable abelian varieties, we deduce the perfectness in full generality. We also treat coefficients in tori and, more generally, 1-motives.
We show that the logarithmic version of the syntomic cohomology of Fontaine and Messing for semistable varieties over $p$-adic rings extends uniquely to a cohomology theory for varieties over $p$-adic fields that satisfies $h$-descent. This new cohomology - syntomic cohomology - is a Bloch-Ogus cohomology theory, admits period map to étale cohomology, and has a syntomic descent spectral sequence (from an algebraic closure of the given field to the field itself) that is compatible with the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence on the étale side. In relative dimension zero we recover the potentiall…
Let $p$ be a prime, let $K$ be a discretely valued extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $A_{K}$ be an abelian $K$-variety with semistable reduction. Extending work by Kim and Marshall from the case where $p>2$ and $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is unramified, we prove an $l=p$ complement of a Galois cohomological formula of Grothendieck for the $l$-primary part of the Néron component group of $A_{K}$. Our proof involves constructing, for each $m\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$, a finite flat $\mathscr{O}_K$-group scheme with generic fiber equal to the maximal 1-crystalline submodule of $A_{K}[p^{m}]$. As a corollar…
We show that the mod p cohomology of a smooth projective variety with semistable reduction over K, a finite extension of Qp, embeds into the reduction modulo p of a semistable Galois representation with Hodge-Tate weights in the expected range (at least after semisimplifying, in the case of the cohomological degree > 1). We prove refinements with descent data, and we apply these results to the cohomology of unitary Shimura varieties, deducing vanishing results and applications to the weight part of Serre's conjecture.
We introduce a qualitative conjecture, in the spirit of Campana, to the effect that certain subsets of rational points on a variety over a number field, or a Deligne-Mumford stack over a ring of S-integers, cannot be Zariski dense. The conjecture interpolates, in a way that we make precise, between Lang's conjecture for rational points on varieties of general type over number fields, and the conjecture of Lang and Vojta that asserts that S-integral points on a variety of logarithmic general type are not Zariski-dense. We show our conjecture follows from Vojta's conjecture. Assuming our conject…
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a finite field $k$ with $|k|=q=p^m$. Let $π\in \text{End}_k(A)$ denote the Frobenius and let $v=\frac{q}π$ denote Verschiebung. Suppose the Weil $q$-polynomial of $A$ is irreducible. When $\text{End}_k(A)=\mathbb{Z}[π,v]$, we construct a matrix which describes the action of $π$ on the prime-to-$p$-torsion points of $A$. We employ this matrix in an algorithm that detects when $p$ is an obstruction to the monogeneity of division fields of certain abelian varieties.
Two abelian varieties $A_1, A_2$ over a number field $K$ are called strongly iso-Kummerian if the torsion fields $K(A_1[d])$ and $K(A_2[d])$ coincide for all $d \geq 1$. For all $g \geq 4$ we construct geometrically simple, strongly iso-Kummerian $g$-dimensional abelian varieties over number fields that are not geometrically isogenous. We also discuss related examples and put significant constraints on any further iso-Kummerian pair.
In this paper, we study smooth proper rigid varieties which admit formal models whose special fibers are projective. The main theorem asserts that the identity components of the associated rigid Picard varieties will automatically be proper. Consequently, we prove that p-adic Hopf varieties will never have a projective reduction. The proof of our main theorem uses the theory of moduli of semistable coherent sheaves.
We study a geometric analogue of the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for abelian varieties in the two following cases: constant ordinary abelian varieties over $Z_p^d$-extensions of function fields ($d\geq 1$) ramified at a finite set of places, and semistable abelian varieties over the arithmetic $Z_p$-extension of a function field. One of the tools we use in our proof is a pseudo-isomorphism relating the duals of the Selmer groups of $A$ and its dual abelian variety $A^t$. This holds as well over number fields and is a consequence of a quite general algebraic functional equation.
Let $K$ be a number field. We present several new finiteness results for isomorphism classes of abelian varieties over $K$ whose $\ell$-power torsion fields are arithmetically constrained for some rational prime $\ell$. Such arithmetic constraints are related to an unresolved question of Ihara regarding the kernel of the canonical outer Galois representation on the pro-$\ell$ fundamental group of $P^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$. Under GRH, we demonstrate the set of classes is finite for any fixed $K$ and any fixed dimension. Without GRH, we prove a semistable version of the result. In addition, several…
A precise and testable modularity conjecture for rational abelian surfaces A with trivial endomorphisms, End_Q A = Z, is presented. It is consistent with our examples, our non-existence results and recent work of C. Poor and D. S. Yuen on weight 2 Siegel paramodular forms. We obtain fairly precise information on ell-division fields of semistable abelian varieties A, mainly when A[ell] is reducible, by considering extension problems for groups schemes of small rank. Our general results imply, for instance, that the least prime conductor of an abelian surface is 277.
Using properties of the Frobenius eigenvalues, we show that, in a precise sense, ``most'' isomorphism classes of (principally polarized) simple abelian varieties over a finite field are characterized up to isogeny by the sequence of their division fields, and a similar result for ``most'' isogeny classes. Some global cases are also treated.
An abelian surface $A_{/{\mathbb Q}}$ of prime conductor $N$ is favorable if its 2-division field $F$ is an ${\mathcal S}_5$-extension with ramification index 5 over ${\mathbb Q}_2$. Let $A$ be favorable and let $B$ be any semistable abelian variety of dimension $2d$ and conductor $N^d$ such that $B[2]$ is filtered by copies of $A[2]$. We give a sufficient class field theoretic criterion on $F$ to guarantee that $B$ is isogenous to $A^d$. As expected from our paramodular conjecture, we conclude that there is one isogeny class of abelian surfaces for each conductor in $\{277, 349,461,797,971\}$…
In this work we compute the universal framed deformation functor for a reducible Galois representation $ρ$ given by direct sum of 2-dimensional representations $ρ_i$ coming from p-divisible groups. We impose the local conditions of flatness in the residual characteristic prime $p$ and semistable action in a single auxiliary prime $\ell$. The main application is the case of $ρ_i$ being the representation attached to the $p$-torsion points of an elliptic curve $E_i$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with good reduction but in $\ell$ and semistable reduction in $\ell$. This article was inspired by a series of wo…
We investigate degenerations of syzygy bundles on plane curves over $p$-adic fields. We use Mustafin varieties which are degenerations of projective spaces to find a large family of models of plane curves over the ring of integers such that the special fiber consists of multiple projective lines meeting in one point. On such models we investigate vector bundles whose generic fiber is a syzygy bundle and which become trivial when restricted to each projective line in the special fiber. Hence these syzygy bundles have strongly semistable reduction. This investigation is motivated by the fundamen…
We apply Tate's conjecture on algebraic cycles to study the Néron-Severi groups of varieties fibered over a curve. This is inspired by the work of Rosen and Silverman, who carry out such an analysis to derive a formula for the rank of the group of sections of an elliptic surface. For a semistable fibered surface, under Tate's conjecture we derive a formula for the rank of the group of sections of the associated Jacobian fibration. For fiber powers of a semistable elliptic fibration $E --> C$, under Tate's conjecture we give a recursive formula for the rank of the Néron-Severi groups of these f…
Let A be a CM abelian variety defined over a number field K. We compute congruence relations on units in fields generated by adjoining torsion points of A to K. For elliptic curves, congruence relations of the type we compute were used in the proof of the Coates-Wiles theorem. In general, we compute congruence relations on exterior products of units in division fields. This result seems to fit more naturally into the framework of the Stark/Rubin conjectures.
Motivated by a question of Hansen and Li, we show that a smooth and proper rigid analytic space $X$ with projective reduction satisfies Hodge symmetry in the following situations: (1) the base non-archimedean field $K$ is of residue characteristic zero, (2) $K$ is $p$-adic and $X$ has good ordinary reduction, (3) $K$ is $p$-adic and $X$ has "combinatorial reduction."' We also reprove a version of their result, Hodge symmetry for $H^1$, without the use of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves. All of this relies on cases of Kato's log hard Lefschetz conjecture, which we prove for $H^1$ and for lo…
This paper is a summary of author's results on finite flat commutative group schemes. The properties of the generic fibre functor are discussed. A complete classification of finite local flat commutative group schemes over mixed characteristic complete discrete valuation rings in terms of their Cartier modules (defined by Oort) is given. We also state several properties of tangent space of these schemes. These results are applied to the study of reduction of Abelian varieties. A finite $p$-adic semistable reduction criterion is formulated. It looks especially nice in the ordinary reduction cas…
In "Mordell-Lang plus Bogomolov", we formulated a conjecture combining the Mordell-Lang conjecture (now proven) and the Bogomolov conjecture, and proved the Mordellic part when A is almost split (i.e., isogenous to the product of an abelian variety and a torus). Here we prove that the full conjecture would follow from the Bogomolov conjecture and an equidistribution result for general semiabelian varieties. These assumptions have been proved when A is almost split, so the conjecture is completely proven in that case.
Let $K$ be a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ and let $X$ be Drinfel'd's symmetric space of dimension $d$ over $K$. Let $Γ\subset {\rm SL}_{d+1}(K)$ be a cocompact discrete (torsionfree) subgroup and let ${X}_Γ=Γ\backslash {X}$, a smooth projective ${K}$-variety. In this paper we investigate the de Rham and log crystalline (log convergent) cohomology of local systems on $X_Γ$ arising from $K[Γ]$-modules. (I) We prove the monodromy weight conjecture in this context. To do so we work out, for a general strictly semistable proper scheme of pure relative dimension $d$ over a cdvr of mixed chara…
