For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a number field $K$, the heuristic density of the set of primes of $K$ for which $E$ has cyclic reduction is given by an inclusion-exclusion sum $δ_{E/K}$ involving the degrees of the $m$-division fields $K_m$ of $E$ over $K$. This density can be proved to be correct under assumption of GRH.
For $E$ without complex multiplication (CM), we show that $δ_{E/K}$ is the product of an explicit non-negative rational number reflecting the finite entanglement of the division fields of $E$ and a universal infinite Artin-type product. For $E$ admitting CM over $K$ by a quadratic order ${\mathcal{O}}$, we show that $δ_{E/K}$ admits a similar `factorization' in which the Artin type product also depends on ${\mathcal{O}}$.
For $E$ admitting CM over $\bar K$ by an order ${\mathcal{O}}\not\subset K$, which occurs for $K={\bf Q}$, the entanglement of division fields over $K$ is non-finite. In this case we write $δ_{E/K}$ as the sum of two contributions coming from the primes of $K$ that are split and inert in ${\mathcal{O}}$. The split contribution can be dealt with by the previous methods, the inert contribution is of a different nature.
We determine the ways in which the density can vanish, and provide numerical examples of the different kinds of densities.
We consider the reduction of an elliptic curve defined over the rational numbers modulo primes in a given arithmetic progression and investigate how often the subgroup of rational points of this reduced curve is cyclic as a special case of Serre's Cyclicity Conjecture.
This is the third part of a series of papers discussing the cyclic torsion subgroup of elliptic curves over cubic number fields. For $N=39$, we show that $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ is not a subgroup of $E(K)_{tor}$ for any elliptic curve $E$ over a cubic number field $K$.
We prove asymptotic formulas for cyclicity of reductions of elliptic curves over the rationals in a family of curves having specified torsion. These results agree with established conditional results and with average results taken over larger families. As a key tool, we prove an analogue of a result of Vlăduţ that estimates the number of elliptic curves over a finite field with a specified torsion point and cyclic group structure.
Let $E$ be an elliptic defined over a number field $K$. Then its Mordell-Weil group $E(K)$ is finitely generated: $E(K)\cong E(K)_{tor}\times\mathbb{Z}^r$. In this paper, we discuss the cyclic torsion subgroup of elliptic curves over cubic number fields. For $N=169,143,91,65,77$ or $55$, we show that $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ is not a subgroup of $E(K)_{tor}$ for any elliptic curve $E$ over a cubic number field $K$.
Merel's result on the strong uniform boundedness conjecture made it meaningful to classify the torsion part of the Mordell-Weil groups of all elliptic curves defined over number fields of fixed degree $d$. In this paper, we discuss the cyclic torsion subgroup of elliptic curves over cubic number fields. For $N=49,40,25$ or $22$, we show that $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ is not a subgroup of $E(K)_{tor}$ for any elliptic curve $E$ over a cubic number field $K$.
Let $K$ be a global field of finite characteristic $p\geq2$, and let $E/K$ be a non-isotrivial elliptic curve. We give an asympotoic formula of the number of places $ν$ for which the reduction of $E$ at $ν$ is a cyclic group. Moreover we determine when the Dirichlet density of those places is 0.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $\mathrm{End}_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}(E)=\mathbb{Z}$ and which admits a non-trivial cyclic $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny. We prove that, for $p>37$, the residual mod $p$ Galois representation $\barρ_{E,p}:G_{\mathbb{Q}}\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is surjective.
We obtain asymptotic formulae for the number of primes $p\le x$ for which the reduction modulo $p$ of the elliptic curve $$ \E_{a,b} : Y^2 = X^3 + aX + b $$ satisfies certain ``natural'' properties, on average over integers $a$ and $b$ with $|a|\le A$ and $|b| \le B$, where $A$ and $B$ are small relative to $x$. Specifically, we investigate behavior with respect to the Sato--Tate conjecture, cyclicity, and divisibility of the number of points by a fixed integer $m$.
Let E be an elliptic curve over a number field K which admits a cyclic p-isogeny with p odd and semistable at primes above p. We determine the root number and the parity of the p-Selmer rank for E/K, in particular confirming the parity conjecture for such curves. We prove the analogous results for p=2 under the additional assumption that E is not supersingular at primes above 2.
For a given group $G$ and an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a number field $K$, I discuss the problem of finding $G$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank. I prove the following theorem, extending a result of Fearnley, Kisilevsky, and Kuwata: Let $n = 3,4,$ or $6$. If $K$ contains its $n^{th}$-roots of unity then, for any elliptic curve $E$ over $K$, there are infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank.
We consider the expected value of $\mbox{Tr}(Θ_C^n)$ where $C$ runs over a thin family of $r$-cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ for any $r$. We obtain many lower order terms dependent on the divisors of $r$. We use these results to calculate the one-level density of the family and hypothesize a refined one-level density result.
The aim of this paper is to study certain family of elliptic curves $\{\mathscr{X}_H\}_H$ defined over a number field $F$ arising from hyperplane sections of some cubic surface $\mathscr{X}/F$ associated to a cyclic cubic extension $K/F$. We show that each $\mathscr{X}_H$ admits a 3-isogeny $ϕ$ over $F$ and the dual Selmer group $S^{(\hatϕ)}(\hat{\mathscr{X}_H}/F)$ is bounded by a kind of unit/class groups attached to $K/F$. This is proven via certain rational function on the elliptic curve $\mathscr{X}_H$ with nice property. We also prove that the Shafarevich-Tate group $\text{\cyr X} (\hat{\…
Infinitely many elliptic curves over ${\bf Q}$ have a Galois-stable cyclic subgroup of order 4. Such subgroups come in pairs, which intersect in their subgroups of order 2. Let $N_i(X)$ denote the number of elliptic curves over ${\bf Q}$ with at least $i$ pairs of Galois-stable cyclic subgroups of order 4, and height at most $X$. In this article we show that $N_1(X) = c_{1,1}X^{1/3}+c_{1,2}X^{1/6}+O(X^{0.105})$. We also show, as $X\to \infty$, that $N_2(X)=c_{2,1}X^{1/6}+o(X^{1/12})$, the precise nature of the error term being related to the prime number theorem and the zeros of the Riemann ze…
The structure of the Tate-Shafarevich groups of a class of elliptic curves over global function fields is determined. These are known to be finite abelian groups from the monograph [1] and hence they are direct sums of finite cyclic groups where the orders of these cyclic components are invariants of the Tate-Shafarevich group. This decomposition of the Tate-Shafarevich groups into direct sums of finite cyclic groups depends on the behaviour of Drinfeld-Heegner points on these elliptic curves. These are points analogous to Heegner points on elliptic curves over the rational numbers.
We explicitly construct and investigate a number of examples of $\mathbb{Z}/p^r$-equivariant formal group laws and complex-oriented spectra, including those coming from elliptic curves and $p$-divisible groups, as well as some other related examples.
In this paper, we examine certain maximal rank sublattices of the Mordell-Weil lattices of two families of elliptic curves over fields of characteristic $p > 0$. We compute explicit lower bounds on the densest sphere packings of these sublattices by finding lower bounds on the minimal norms of the sublattices and explicitly computing the volumes of their fundamental domains.
In this paper, we construct an infinite family of elliptic curves whose rank is exactly two and the torsion subgroup is a cyclic group of order two or three, under the parity conjecture.
This paper investigates which integers can appear as 2-Selmer ranks within the quadratic twist family of an elliptic curve E defined over a number field K with E(K)[2] = Z/2Z. We show that if E does not have a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]), then subject only to constant 2-Selmer parity, each non-negative integer appears infinitely often as the 2-Selmer rank of a quadratic twist of E. If E has a cyclic 4-isogeny defined over K(E[2]) but not over K, then we prove the same result for 2-Selmer ranks greater than or equal to r_2, the number of complex places of K. We also obtain results abo…
Let $K$ be a global function field and fix a place $\infty$ of $K$. Let $L/K$ be a finite real abelian extension, i.e. a finite, abelian extension such that $\infty$ splits completely in $L$. Then we define a group of elliptic units $C_L$ in $\mathcal{O}_L^\times$ analogously to Sinnott's cyclotomic units and compute the index $[\mathcal{O}_L^\times:C_L]$. In the second part of this article, we additionally assume that $L$ is a cyclic extension of prime power degree. Then we can use the methods from Greither and Kučera to take certain roots of these elliptic units and prove a result on the ann…
We consider character sums determined by isogenies of elliptic curves over finite fields. We prove a congruence condition for character sums attached to arbitrary cyclic isogenies, and produce explicit formulas for isogenies of small degree.
We compute the averages over elliptic curves of the constants occurring in the Lang-Trotter conjecture, the Koblitz conjecture, and the cyclicity conjecture. The results obtained confirm the consistency of these conjectures with the corresponding ``theorems on average'' obtained recently by various authors.
By adapting the technique of David, Koukoulopoulos and Smith for computing sums of Euler products, and using their interpretation of results of Schoof à la Gekeler, we determine the average number of subgroups (or cyclic subgroups) of an elliptic curve over a fixed finite field of prime size. This is in line with previous works computing the average number of (cyclic) subgroups of finite abelian groups of rank at most 2. A required input is a good estimate for the divisor function in both short interval and arithmetic progressions, that we obtain by combining ideas of Ivić--Zhai and Blomer.
Let $\mathcal{O}$ be an order in the imaginary quadratic field $K$. For positive integers $M \mid N$, we determine the least degree of an $\mathcal{O}$-CM point on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/K(ζ_M)}$ and also on the modular curve $X(M,N)_{/\mathbb{Q}(ζ_M)}$: that is, we treat both the case in which the complex multiplication is rationally defined and the case in which we do not assume that the complex multiplication is rationally defined. To prove these results we establish several new theorems on rational cyclic isogenies of CM elliptic curves. In particular, we extend a result of Kwon that …
We prove local results on the $p$-adic density of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ with different reduction types, together with global results on densities of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ with specified reduction types at one or more (including infinitely many) primes. These global results include: the density of integral Weierstrass equations which are minimal models of semistable elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ (that is, elliptic curves with square-free conductor) is $1/ζ(2)\approx60.79\%$, the same as the density of square-free integers; the density of semistable elliptic curves …
In this paper, we consider Abelian varieties over function fields that arise as twists of Abelian varieties by cyclic covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. Then, in terms of Prym varieties associated to the cyclic covers, we prove a structure theorem on their Mordell-Weil group. Our results give an explicit method for construction of elliptic curves, hyper- and super-elliptic Jacobians that have large ranks over function fields of certain varieties.
The aim of this paper is to study the group of elliptic units of a cyclic extension $L$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the degree $[L:K]$ is a power of an odd prime $p$. We construct an explicit root of the usual top generator of this group and we use it to obtain an annihilation result of the $p$-Sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of $L$.
Following Katz-Sarnak, Iwaniec-Luo-Sarnak, and Rubinstein, we use the 1- and 2-level densities to study the distribution of low lying zeros for one-parameter rational families of elliptic curves over Q(t). Modulo standard conjectures, for small support the densities agree with Katz and Sarnak's predictions. Further, the densities confirm that the curves' L-functions behave in a manner consistent with having r zeros at the critical point, as predicted by the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. By studying the 2-level densities of some constant sign families, we find the first examples of fami…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Then, we show that the average analytic rank of $E$ over cyclic extensions of degree $l$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $l$ a prime not equal to $2$, is at most $2+r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$, where $r_{\mathbb{Q}}(E)$ is the analytic rank of the elliptic curve $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. This bound is independent of the degree $l$ Also, we also obtain some average analytic rank results over $S_d$-fields.
If $E$ is an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, then it follows from work of Serre and Hooley that, under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, the density of primes $p$ such that the group of $\mathbb{F}_p$-rational points of the reduced curve $\tilde{E}(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is cyclic can be written as an infinite product $\prod δ_\ell$ of local factors $δ_\ell$ reflecting the degree of the $\ell$-torsion fields, multiplied by a factor that corrects for the entanglements between the various torsion fields. We show that this correction factor can be interpreted as a character sum, and…
In this paper we classify the complex elliptic curves $E$ for which there exist cyclic subgroups $C\leq (E,+)$ of order $n$ such that the elliptic curves $E$ and $E/C$ are isomorphic, where $n$ is a positive integer. Important examples are provided in the last section. Moreover, we answer the following question: given a complex elliptic curve E, when can one find a cyclic subgroup $C$ of order $n$ of $(E,+)$ such that $(E,C)\sim(\frac{E}{C},\frac{E[n]}{C})$, $E[n]$ being the $n$-torsion subgroup of $E$, classifying in this way the fixed points of the action of the Fricke involution on the open…
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a local field $K$ with residue characteristic $3$, we investigate the action of the absolute Galois group of $K$ in the case of potentially good reduction. In particular the only not completely known case is that of the $\ell$-adic Galois representation attached to an elliptic curve such that the image of inertia is non-cyclic, and isomorphic to $C_3 \rtimes C_4$. In this work we describe such a representation explicitly.
We give a construction of unramified cyclic octic extensions of certain complex quadratic number fields. The binary quadratic form used in this construction also shows up in the theory of 2-descents on Pell conics and elliptic curves, as well as in the explicit description of cyclic quartic extensions.
Elliptic $K$-curves are elliptic curves defined over some field extension $L/K$ that are isogenous to all of their Galois conjugates. We present a new result on $K$-curves $E$ that are given by a $K$-rational orbit $\{τ, -1/Nτ\}$ of the Fricke involution on $Y_0(N)$, giving a simple Diophantine condition on the extension $L/K$ that determines which twists of $E$ allow the isogeny between Galois conjugates to be defined over $L$. To support and illustrate this result, we also discuss parameterizations of cyclic $N$-isogenies corresponding to points on modular curves $X_0(N)$ of genus $0$. These…
The classification of elliptic curves E over the rationals Q is studied according to their torsion subgroups E_{tors}(Q) of rational points. Explicit criteria for the classification are given when E_{tors}(Q) are cyclic groups with even orders. The generator points P of E_{tors}(Q) are also explicitly presented in each case. These results, together with recent results of K. Ono, completely solve the problem of the mentioned explicit classification when E has a rational point of order 2.
We give explicit formulae for the logarithmic class group pairing on an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Then we relate it to the descent relative to a suitable cyclic isogeny. This allows us to connect the resulting Selmer group with the logarithmic class group of the base. These constructions are explicit and suitable for computer experimentation. From a conceptual point of view, the questions that arise here are analogues of "visibility" questions in the sense of Cremona and Mazur.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $K$. If for almost all primes of $K$, the reduction of $E$ modulo that prime has rational cyclic isogeny of fixed degree, we can ask if this forces $E$ to have a cyclic isogeny of that degree over $K$. Building upon the work of Sutherland, Anni, and Banwait-Cremona in the case of prime degree, we consider this question for cyclic isogenies of arbitrary degree.
Recently, the weight distributions of the duals of the cyclic codes with two zeros have been obtained for several cases. In this paper we use the method developed before to solve one more special case. We make extensive use of standard tools in number theory such as characters of finite fields, the Gauss sums and the Jacobi sums. The problem of finding the weight distribution is transformed into a problem of evaluating certain character sums over finite fields, which turns out to be associated with counting the number of points on some elliptic curves over finite fields. We also treat the spec…
Recently, the weight distributions of the duals of the cyclic codes with two zeros have been obtained for several cases. In this paper we provide a slightly different approach toward the general problem and use it to solve one more special case. We make extensive use of standard tools in number theory such as characters of finite fields, the Gauss sums and the Jacobi sums to transform the problem of finding the weight distribution into a problem of evaluating certain character sums over finite fields, which on the special case is related with counting the number of points on some elliptic curv…
Let $E/F$ be a cyclic extension of $p$-adic fields and $n$ a positive integer. Arthur and Clozel constructed a base change process $π\mapsto π_E$ which associates to a smooth irreducible representation of $GL_n(F)$ a smooth irreducible representation of $GL_n(E)$, invariant under $Gal(E/F)$. When $π$ is tempered, $π_E$ is tempered and is characterized by an identity (the Shintani character relation) relating the character of $π$ to the character of $π_E$ twisted by the action of $Gal(E/F)$. In this paper we show that the Shintani relation also holds when $π$ is unitary or elliptic. We prove si…
We compute the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order two, and of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order three, over any base scheme on which 6 is invertible. This generalizes a result of Fulton-Olsson, who computed the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves (with no level structure) over a wide variety of base schemes.
To determine the global root number of an elliptic curve defined over a number field, one needs to understand all the local root numbers. These have been classified except at places above 2, and in this paper we attempt to complete the classification. At places above 2, we express the local root numbers in terms of norm residue symbols (resp. root numbers of explicit 1-dimensional characters) in case when wild inertia acts through a cyclic (resp. quaternionic) quotient.
