In this paper we classify the complex elliptic curves $E$ for which there exist cyclic subgroups $C\leq (E,+)$ of order $n$ such that the elliptic curves $E$ and $E/C$ are isomorphic, where $n$ is a positive integer. Important examples are provided in the last section. Moreover, we answer the following question: given a complex elliptic curve E, when can one find a cyclic subgroup $C$ of order $n$ of $(E,+)$ such that $(E,C)\sim(\frac{E}{C},\frac{E[n]}{C})$, $E[n]$ being the $n$-torsion subgroup of $E$, classifying in this way the fixed points of the action of the Fricke involution on the open modular curves $Y_0(n)$
We prove new results on splitting Brauer classes by genus 1 curves, settling in particular the case of degree 7 classes over global fields. Though our method is cohomological in nature, and proceeds by considering the more difficult problem of splitting $μ_N$-gerbes, we use crucial input from the arithmetic of modular curves and explicit $N$-descent on elliptic curves.
We prove the generalised Tate conjecture for H^3 of products of elliptic curves over finite fields, by slightly modifying an argument of M. Spiess concerning the Tate conjecture. We prove it fully if the elliptic curves run among at most 3 isogeny classes. We also show how things become more intricate from H^4 onwards, for more that 3 isogeny classes.
We show that the distribution of elliptic curves in isogeny classes of curves with a given value of the Frobenius trace $t$ becomes close to uniform even when $t$ is averaged over very short intervals inside the Hasse-Weil interval.
The main new result is the computation of the degeneration of l-adic Eisenstein classes at the cusps. This is done by relating it to the degeneration of the elliptic polylog. These classes come from K-theory and their Hodge regulator can also be computed (see: Dirichlet motives via modula curves, on the K-theory server). This gives a new proof of a comparison conjecture of Bloch and Kato which was used in the proof of their Tamagawa number conjecture for the Riemann zeta-function. The paper contains appendices on the definition of the classical and elliptic polylog, its degeneration and the co…
Let $E:y^2=(x-e_1)(x-e_2)(x-e_3)$ be a nonconstant elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$, where $e_j\in \mathbb{Z}[t]$. We describe a method for finding a specialization $t\mapsto t_0\in\mathbb{Q}$ such that the specialization homomorphism is injective. The method can be directly extended to elliptic curves with $e_j\in \mathcal{R}_K[t]$ where $K$ is a number field and $\mathcal{R}_K$ is some UFD such that $\mathcal O_K\subset\mathcal R_K\subset K$. Further, we make a simplification of the method for a special case of quadratic twists. The method is applied to obtain exactly the rank and prove t…
Let K be a number field and E/K a modular elliptic curve, with modular parametrization $X_0(N) \to E$ defined over K. The purpose of this note is to study the images in E of classes of isogenous points in X_0(N).
The specializations of the motivic elliptic polylog are called motivic Eisenstein classes. For applications to special values of L-Functions, it is important to compute the realizations of these classes. In this paper, we prove that the syntomic realization of the motivic Eisenstein classes, restricted to the ordinary locus of the modular curve, may be expressed using p-adic Eisenstein-Kronecker series. These p-adic modular forms are defined using the two-variable p-adic measure with values in p-adic modular forms constructed by Katz.
This is a completely rewritten version of the paper formerly entitled "Sheaves of Iwasawa modules, moment maps and the $\ell$-adic elliptic polylogarithm". The proof of the main result is also simplified. In the paper we study systematically the $\ell$-adic realization of the elliptic polylogarithm in the context of sheaves of Iwasawa modules. This leads to a description of the elliptic polylogarithm in terms of elliptic units. As an application we prove a precise relation between $\ell$-adic Eisenstein classes and elliptic Soulé elements. This allows to give a new proof of the formula for the…
Let $E:y^2=x^3+Ax^2+Bx+C$ be a nonconstant elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ with at least one nontrivial $\mathbb{Q}(t)$-rational $2$-torsion point. We describe a method for finding $t_0\in\mathbb Q$ for which the corresponding specialization homomorphism $t\mapsto t_0\in\mathbb{Q}$ is injective. The method can be directly extended to elliptic curves over $K(t)$ for a number field $K$ of class number $1$, and in principal for arbitrary number field $K$. One can use this method to calculate the rank of elliptic curves over $\mathbb Q(t)$ of the form as above, and to prove that given points a…
We prove the first cases of a conjecture by Darmon--Rotger on the non-vanishing of generalized Kato classes attached to elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbf{Q}$ of rank $2$. Our method also shows that the non-vanishing of generalized Kato classes implies that the $p$-adic Selmer group of $E$ is $2$-dimensional. The main novelty in the proof is a formula for the leading term at the trivial character of an anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $E$ in terms of the derived $p$-adic height of generalized Kato classes and an enhanced $p$-adic regulator.
We list the elliptic curves defined over $Q(\sqrt 5)$ with good reduction away from 2. There are 368 isomorphism classes. We give a global minimal model for each class.
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny class of elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. The isogeny graph associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is a graph which has a vertex for each elliptic curve in the $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny class $\mathcal{E}$, and an edge for each cyclic $\mathbb{Q}$-isogeny of prime degree between elliptic curves in the isogeny class, with the degree recorded as a label of the edge. In this paper, we define an isogeny-torsion graph to be an isogeny graph where, in addition, we label each vertex with the abstract group structure of the torsion subgroup over $\mathbb{Q}$ of th…
We give explicit formulas for the number of distinct elliptic curves over a finite field, up to isomorphism, in two families of curves introduced by C.~Doche, T.~Icart and D.~R. Kohel.
An abelian variety admits only a finite number of isomorphism classes of principal polarizations. The paper gives an interpretation of this number in terms of class numbers of definite Hermitian forms in the case of a product of elliptic curves without complex multiplication. In the case of a self-product of an elliptic curve, as well as in the two-dimensional case, classical class number computations can be applied to determine this number.
In this work we prove congruences between special values of elliptic curves with CM that seem to play a central role in the analytic side of the non-commutative Iwasawa theory. These congruences are the analogue for elliptic curves with CM of those proved by Kato, Ritter and Weiss for the Tate motive. The proof is based on the fact that the critical values of elliptic curves with CM, or what amounts to the same, the critical values of Grössencharacters, can be expressed as values of Hilbert-Eisenstein series at CM points. We believe that our strategy can be generalized to provide congruences f…
In this paper, we study a certain Artin--Schreier family of elliptic curves over the function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We prove an asymptotic estimate on the size of the special value of their $L$-function in terms of the degree of their conductor; loosely speaking, we show that the special values are "asymptotically as large as possible". We also provide an explicit expression for the $L$-function of the elliptic curves in the family. The proof of the main result uses this expression and a detailed study of the distribution of some character sums related to Kloosterman sums. Via the BSD conje…
We give an explicit description of the syntomic elliptic polylogarithm on the universal elliptic curve over the ordinary locus of the modular curve in terms of certain $p$-adic analytic moment functions associated to Katz' two-variable $p$-adic Eisenstein measure. The present work generalizes previous results of Bannai-Kobayashi-Tsuji and Bannai-Kings on the syntomic Eisenstein classes.
Cremona, Mazur, and others have studied what they call visibility of elements of Shafarevich-Tate groups of elliptic curves. The analogue for an abelian number field $K$ is capitulation of ideal classes of $K$ in the minimal cyclotomic field containing $K$. We develop a new method to study capitulation and use it and classical methods to compute data with the hope of gaining insight into the elliptic curve case. For example, the numerical data for number fields suggests that visibility of nontrivial Shafarevich-Tate elements might be much more common for elliptic curves of positive rank than f…
Let $E/\mathbb Q(t)$ be an elliptic curve and let $t_0 \in \mathbb Q$ be a rational number for which the specialization $E_{t_0}$ is an elliptic curve. Given a subgroup $M$ of $E(\mathbb Q(t))$ with mild conditions and $t_0 \in \mathbb Q$ coming from a relatively large subset $S_M \subset \mathbb Q$, we provide an algorithm that can show that the specialization map $σ_{t_0} : E(\mathbb Q(t)) \to E_{t_0}(\mathbb Q)$ is injective when restricted to $M$. The set $S_M$ is effectively computable in certain cases, and we carry out this computation for some explicit examples where $E$ is given by a W…
We study some automorphic cohomology classes of degree one on the Griffiths-Schmid varieties attached to some unitary groups in 3 variables. Using partial compactifications of those varieties, constructed by K. Kato and S. Usui, we define for such a cohomology class some analogues of Fourier-Shimura coefficients, which are cohomology classes on certain elliptic curves. We show that a large space of such automorphic classes can be generated by those with rational "coefficients". More precisely, we consider those cohomology classes that come from Picard modular forms, via some Penrose-like trans…
Consider a fibered power of an elliptic surface. We characterize its subvarieties that contain a Zariski dense set of points that are torsion points in fibers with complex multiplication. This result can be viewed as a mix of the Manin-Mumford and André-Oort Conjecture and is related to a conjecture of Pink. The main technical tool is a new height inequality. We also use it to give another proof of a case of Gubler's result on the Bogomolov Conjecture over function fields.
For the elliptic curves $E_{σ2D} : y^2 = x^3 + σ2Dx$ , which has 2-isogeny curve $E'_{σ2D} : y^2 = x^3 -σ8Dx$, $σ= \pm 1,\ D = p_1^{e_1}p_2^{e_2}\cdots p_n^{e_n}$, where $p_i$ are different odd prime numbers and $e_i = 1 \text{ or } 3$, we demonstrate that Tamagawa numbers of these elliptic curves are always one or zero by the use of matrix in finite field $\mathbb F_2$. The specific number depends on the value of $σ$. By our proofs of these results, we find a method to quickly sieve a part of the elliptic curves with Mordell-Weil rank zero or rank one in this form as an application.
We investigate relations between elliptic multiple zeta values and describe a method to derive the number of indecomposable elements of given weight and length. Our method is based on representing elliptic multiple zeta values as iterated integrals over Eisenstein series and exploiting the connection with a special derivation algebra. Its commutator relations give rise to constraints on the iterated integrals over Eisenstein series relevant for elliptic multiple zeta values and thereby allow to count the indecomposable representatives. Conversely, the above connection suggests apparently new r…
Let $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ be the Atkin-Lehner quotient of the Shimura curve $X_0^6(1)$ associated to a maximal order in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $6$ over $\mathbb Q$. By realizing modular forms on $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ in two ways, one in terms of hypergeometric functions and the other in terms of Borcherds forms, and using Schofer's formula for values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we obtain special values of certain hypergeometric functions in terms of periods of elliptic curves over $\overline\mathbb Q$ with complex multiplication.
We make a detailed account of sign-normalized rank 1 Drinfeld A-modules, for A the coordinate ring of an elliptic curve over a finite field, in order to provide a parallel theory to the Carlitz module for F_q[t]. Using precise formulas for the shtuka function for A, we obtain a product formula for the fundamental period of the Drinfeld module. Using the shtuka function we find identities for deformations of reciprocal sums and as a result prove special value formulas for Pellarin L-series in terms of an Anderson-Thakur function. We also give a new proof of a log-algebraicity theorem of Anderso…
We construct a norm compatible system of Galois cohomology classes in the cyclotomic extension of the field of rationnals giving rise (conjecturally) to the degree four p-adic L-function of the symplectic group GSp(4). These classes are defined as cup products of torsion sections of the elliptic polylogarithm pro-sheaf. We rely on the norm compatibility of the elliptic polylogarithm and on some weight computations in the cohomology of Siegel threefolds.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ we study the finite extensions $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ of $\mathbb{F}_q$ such that the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-rational points on $E$ attains the Hasse upper bound. We obtain an upper bound on the degree $n$ for $E$ ordinary using an estimate for linear forms in logarithms, which allows us to compute the pairs of isogeny classes of such curves and degree $n$ for small $q$. Using a consequence of Schmidt's Subspace Theorem, we improve the upper bound to $n\leq 11$ for sufficiently large $q$. We also show that there are infinitely ma…
Building on ideas of Vatsal, Cornut proved a conjecture of Mazur asserting the generic nonvanishing of Heegner points on an elliptic curve E as one ascends the anticyclotomic Z_p-extension of a quadratic imaginary extension K/Q. In the present article Cornut's result is extended by replacing the elliptic curve E with the Galois cohomology of Deligne's 2-dimensional l-adic representation attached to a modular form of weight 2k>2, and replacing the family of Heegner points with an analogous family of special cohomology classes.
Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a pure motive over $\mathbb{Q}$ of odd weight $w\geq 3$, even rank $d\geq 2$, and global conductor $N$ whose $L$-function $L(s,\mathcal{M})$ coincides with the $L$-function of a self-dual algebraic tempered cuspidal symplectic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{d}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$. We show that a certain polynomial which generates special values of $L(s,\mathcal{M})$ (including all of the critical values) has all of its zeros equidistributed on the unit circle, provided that $N$ or $w$ are sufficiently large with respect to $d$. These special values have arithmetic s…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve and let $\mathbb{Q}(3^\infty)$ be the compositum of all cubic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article we show that the torsion subgroup of $E(\mathbb{Q}(3^\infty))$ is finite and determine 20 possibilities for its structure, along with a complete description of the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isomorphism classes of elliptic curves that fall into each case. We provide rational parameterizations for each of the 16 torsion structures that occur for infinitely many $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isomorphism classes of elliptic curves, and a complete list of $j$-inv…
In \cite{mccarthy2}, McCarthy defined a function $_{n}G_{n}[\cdots]$ using Teichmüller character of finite fields and quotients of $p$-adic gamma function, and expressed the trace of Frobenius of elliptic curves in terms of special values of $_{2}G_{2}[\cdots]$. We establish two different expressions for the traces of Frobenius of elliptic curves in terms of the function $_{2}G_{2}[\cdots]$. As a result, we obtain two relations between special values of the function $_{2}G_{2}[\cdots]$ with different parameters.
We present a heuristic asymptotic formula as $x\to \infty$ for the number of isogeny classes of pairing-friendly elliptic curves with fixed embedding degree $k\geq 3$, with fixed discriminant, with rho-value bounded by a fixed $ρ_0$ such that $1<ρ_0<2$, and with prime subgroup order at most $x$.
We give an explicit expression of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum which is a special case of multiple elliptic Dedekind sums introduced by Egami. We also determine the denominator of the rational part and zeros of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum.
We analyze log-algebraic power series identities for formal groups of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ which arise from modular parametrizations. We further investigate applications to special values of elliptic curve $L$-functions.
An abelian variety over a number field is called L-abelian variety if, for any element of the absolute Galois group of a number field L, the conjugated abelian variety is isogenous to the given one by means of an isogeny that preserves the Galois action on the endomorphism rings. We can think of them as generalizations of abelian varieties defined over L with endomorphisms also defined over L. In the one dimensional case, an elliptic curve defined over L gives rise to a Galois representation provided by the Galois action on its Tate module. This classical Galois representation has been a centr…
With analytic applications in mind, in particular Beyond Endoscopy ([13]), we initiate the study of the elliptic part of the trace formula. Incorporating the approximate functional equation to the elliptic part we control the analytic behavior of the volumes of tori that appear in the elliptic part. Furthermore by carefully choosing the truncation parameter in the approximate functional equation we smooth-out the singularities of orbital integrals. Finally by an application of Poisson summation we rewrite the elliptic part so that it is ready to be used in analytic applications, and in particu…
We evaluate in closed form, for the first time, certain classes of double series, which are remindful of lattice sums. Elliptic functions, singular moduli, class invariants, and the Rogers--Ramanujan continued fraction play central roles in our evaluations
We introduce an analogue of the Mertens conjecture for elliptic curves over finite fields. Using a result of Waterhouse, we classify the isogeny classes of elliptic curves for which this conjecture holds in terms the size of the finite field and the trace of the Frobenius endomorphism acting on the curve.
Watkins' conjecture asserts that for a rational elliptic curve $E$ the degree of the modular parametrization is divisible by $2^r$, where $r$ is the rank of $E$. In this paper we prove that if the modular degree is odd then $E$ has rank $0$. Moreover, we prove that the conjecture holds for all rank two rational elliptic curves of prime conductor and positive discriminant.
B.C. Berndt evaluated special values of the cotangent Dirichlet series. T. Arakawa studied a generalization of the series, or generalized cotangent Dirichlet series, and gave its transformation formulae. In this paper, we establish an elliptic analogue of the generalized cotangent Dirichlet series and give its transformation formulae at some integer arguments. As a corollary, we obtain the transformation formulae of the generalized cotangent Dirichlet series at some integer arguments which are the part of Arakawa's transformation formulae. Those transformation formulae give the special values …
A connected Kuga-Sato variety $\mathbf{W}^r$ parameterizes tuples of $r$ points on elliptic curves (with level structure). A special point of $\mathbf{W}^r$ is a tuple of torsion points on a CM elliptic curve. A sequence of special points is strict if any CM elliptic curve appears at most finitely many times and no relation between the points in the tuple is satisfied infinitely often. The genus orbit of a special point is the $\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}^{\mathrm{ab}})$-orbit. We show that genus orbits of special points in a strict sequence equidistribute in $\mathbf{W}^r(\…
