We present new ideas for computing elliptic Gauß sums, which constitute an analogue of the classical cyclotomic Gauß sums and whose use has been proposed in the context of counting points on elliptic curves and primality tests. By means of certain well-known modular functions we define the universal elliptic Gauß sums and prove they admit an efficiently computable representation in terms of the $j$-invariant and another modular function. After that, we show how this representation can be used for obtaining the elliptic Gauß sum associated to an elliptic curve over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$, which may then be employed for counting points or primality proving.
We derive a new bound for some bilinear sums over points of an elliptic curve over a finite field. We use this bound to improve a series of previous results on various exponential sums and some arithmetic problems involving points on elliptic curves.
We consider character sums determined by isogenies of elliptic curves over finite fields. We prove a congruence condition for character sums attached to arbitrary cyclic isogenies, and produce explicit formulas for isogenies of small degree.
Elliptic Dedekind sums were introduced by R. Sczech as generalizations of classical Dedekind sums to complex lattices. We show that for any lattice with real $j$-invariant, the values of suitably normalized elliptic Dedekind sums are dense in the real numbers. This extends an earlier result of Ito for Euclidean imaginary quadratic rings. Our proof is an adaptation of the recent work of Kohnen, which gives a new proof of the density of values of classical Dedekind sums.
Dedekind symbols are generalizations of the classical Dedekind sums (symbols). There is a natural isomorphism between the space of Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws and the space of modular forms. We will define a new elliptic analogue of the Apostol-Dedekind sums. Then we will show that the newly defined sums generate all odd Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws. Our construction is based on Machide's result on his elliptic Dedekind-Rademacher sums. As an application of our results, we discover Eisenstein series identities which generalize certain …
In a former paper it has been shown that the elliptic Gauß sums, whose use has been proposed in the context of counting points on elliptic curves and primality tests, can be computed by using modular functions. In this work we give detailed algorithms for the necessary computations, all of which have been implemented in C. We analyse the relatively straightforward algorithms derived from the theory and provide several improvements speeding up computations considerably. In addition, slightly generalizing former results we describe how (elliptic) Jacobi sums may be determined in a very similar w…
This work builds on earlier results. We define universal elliptic Gauß sums for Atkin primes in Schoof's algorithm for counting points on elliptic curves. Subsequently, we show these quantities admit an efficiently computable representation in terms of the $j$-invariant and two other modular functions. We analyse the necessary computations in detail and derive an alternative approach for determining the trace of the Frobenius homomorphism for Atkin primes using these pre-computations. A rough run-time analysis shows, however, that this new method is not competitive with existing ones.
If an integer $n$ is written as a sum of two biquadrates in two different ways, then the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3-nx$ has rank $\geq 3$. If moreover $n$ is odd and the parity conjecture is true, then it has even rank $\geq 4$. Finally, some examples of ranks equal to 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, are also obtained.
There are classical congruences between the class number of an imaginary quadratic field and a Bernoulli number or an Euler number. Under the BSD conjecture, Onishi obtained an elliptic generalization of these congruences, which gives congruences between the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of certain elliptic curves with CM by the Gauss integers ring and Mordell-Weil rank 0, and a coefficient of power series expansion of an elliptic function associated to Gauss integers ring. In this paper, we provide Onishi's type congruences for the Eisenstein integers case.
We present a new approach to handling the case of Atkin primes in Schoof's algorithm for counting points on elliptic curves over finite fields. Our approach is based on the theory of polynomially cyclic algebras, which we recall as far as necessary. We then proceed to describe our method, which essentially relies on transferring costly computations in extensions of $\mathbb{F}_p$ to isomorphic ones endowed with a special structure allowing to reduce run-time. We analyse the new run-time and conclude this procedure yields some improvement as compared to the classical approaches.
Let H(N) denote the Hurwitz class number. It is known that if $p$ is a prime, then {equation*} \sum_{|r|<2\sqrt p}H(4p-r^2) = 2p. {equation*} In this paper, we investigate the behavior of this sum with the additional condition $r\equiv c\pmod m$. Three different methods will be explored for determining the values of such sums. First, we will count isomorphism classes of elliptic curves over finite fields. Second, we will express the sums as coefficients of modular forms. Third, we will manipulate the Eichler-Selberg trace for ula for Hecke operators to obtain Hurwitz class number relations. Th…
We give closed form evaluations for many families of integrals, whose integrands contain algebraic functions of the complete elliptic integrals $K$ and $E$. Our methods exploit the rich structures connecting complete elliptic integrals, Jacobi theta functions, lattice sums, and Eisenstein series. Various examples are given, and along the way new (including 10-dimensional) lattice sum evaluations are produced.
The rationality of the elliptic Gauss sum coefficient is shown. The following is a specific case of our argument. Let f(u)=sl((1-i)\varpi u), where sl() is the Gauss' lemniscatic sine and \varpi=2.62205... is the real period of the elliptic curve y^2=x^3-x, so that f(u) is an elliptic function relative to the period lattice Z[i]. Let πbe a primary prime of Z[i] such that norm(π)\equiv 13\mod 16. Let S be the quarter set mod πconsisting of quartic residues. Let us define G(π):=\sum_{ν\in S} f(ν/π) and \tildeπ:=\prod_{ν\in S} f(ν/π). The former G(π) is a typical example of elliptic Gauss sum; th…
If $E$ is an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, then it follows from work of Serre and Hooley that, under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, the density of primes $p$ such that the group of $\mathbb{F}_p$-rational points of the reduced curve $\tilde{E}(\mathbb{F}_p)$ is cyclic can be written as an infinite product $\prod δ_\ell$ of local factors $δ_\ell$ reflecting the degree of the $\ell$-torsion fields, multiplied by a factor that corrects for the entanglements between the various torsion fields. We show that this correction factor can be interpreted as a character sum, and…
The structure of the Tate-Shafarevich groups of a class of elliptic curves over global function fields is determined. These are known to be finite abelian groups from the monograph [1] and hence they are direct sums of finite cyclic groups where the orders of these cyclic components are invariants of the Tate-Shafarevich group. This decomposition of the Tate-Shafarevich groups into direct sums of finite cyclic groups depends on the behaviour of Drinfeld-Heegner points on these elliptic curves. These are points analogous to Heegner points on elliptic curves over the rational numbers.
We obtain new elliptic function identities, which are an elliptic analogue of Fukuhara's trigonometric identities. We show that the coefficients of Laurent expansions at $z=0$ of our elliptic identities give rise to some reciprocity laws for elliptic Dedekind sums.
Determining the rank of an elliptic curve E/Q is a hard problem, and in some applications (e.g. when searching for curves of high rank) one has to rely on heuristics aimed at estimating the analytic rank (which is equal to the rank under the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture). In this paper, we develop rank classification heuristics modeled by deep convolutional neural networks (CNN). Similarly to widely used Mestre-Nagao sums, it takes as an input the conductor of E and a sequence of normalized a_p-s (where a_p=p+1-#E(F_p) if p is a prime of good reduction) in some range (p<10^k for k=3,4,…
We give a new proof of Milne's formulas for the number of representations of an integer as a sum of 4m^2 and 4m(m+1) squares. The proof is based on explicit evaluation of pfaffians with elliptic function entries, and relates Milne's formulas to Schur Q-polynomials and to correlation functions for continuous dual Hahn polynomials. We also state a new formula for 2m^2 squares.
We give an explicit expression of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum which is a special case of multiple elliptic Dedekind sums introduced by Egami. We also determine the denominator of the rational part and zeros of the elliptic classical Dedekind sum.
We present several results related to statistics for elliptic curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ as corollaries of a general theorem about averages of Euler products that we demonstrate. In this general framework, we can reprove known results such as the average Lang-Trotter conjecture, the average Koblitz conjecture, and the vertical Sato-Tate conjecture, even for very short intervals, not accessible by previous methods. We also compute statistics for new questions, such as the problem of amicable pairs and aliquot cycles, first introduced by Silverman and Stange. Our technique is rath…
In this paper, we study a certain Artin--Schreier family of elliptic curves over the function field $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We prove an asymptotic estimate on the size of the special value of their $L$-function in terms of the degree of their conductor; loosely speaking, we show that the special values are "asymptotically as large as possible". We also provide an explicit expression for the $L$-function of the elliptic curves in the family. The proof of the main result uses this expression and a detailed study of the distribution of some character sums related to Kloosterman sums. Via the BSD conje…

In the present paper we investigate the limiting behaviour of short incomplete Gauss sums at random argument as the number of terms goes to infinity. We prove that the limit distribution is given by the distribution of theta sums and differs from the limit law for long Gauss sums studied by the author and Marklof. The key ingredient in the proof is an equidistribution theorem for rational points on horocycles in the metaplectic cover of SL(2,R).
We introduce a method that is based on Fourier series expansions related to Jacobi elliptic functions and that we apply to determine new identities for evaluating hyperbolic infinite sums in terms of the complete elliptic integrals $K$ and $E$. We apply our method to determine generalizations of a family of $\text{sech}$-sums given by Ramanujan and generalizations of a family of $\text{csch}$-sums given by Zucker. Our method has the advantage of producing evaluations for hyperbolic sums with sign functions that have not previously appeared in the literature on hyperbolic sums. We apply our met…
An elementary approach is shown which derives the values of the Gauss sums over $\mathbb F_{p^r}$, $p$ odd, of a cubic character without using Davenport-Hasse's theorem. New links between Gauss sums over different field extensions are shown in terms of factorizations of the Gauss sums themselves, which are then rivisited in terms of prime ideal decompositions. Interestingly, one of these results gives a representation of primes $p$ of the form $6k+1$ by a binary quadratic form in integers of a subfield of the cyclotomic field of the $p$-th roots of unity.
A classical result of Dirichlet shows that certain elementary character sums compute class numbers of quadratic imaginary number fields. We obtain analogous relations between class numbers and a weighted character sum associated to a 2-isogeny of elliptic curves.
If $k$ is a sufficiently large positive integer, we show that the Diophantine equation $$n (n+d) \cdots (n+ (k-1)d) = y^{\ell}$$ has at most finitely many solutions in positive integers $n, d, y$ and $\ell$, with $\operatorname{gcd}(n,d)=1$ and $\ell \geq 2$. Our proof relies upon Frey-Hellegouarch curves and results on supersingular primes for elliptic curves without complex multiplication, derived from upper bounds for short character sums and sieves, analytic and combinatorial.
Let $\F_q$ ($q=p^r$) be a finite field. In this paper the number of irreducible polynomials of degree $m$ in $\F_q[x]$ with prescribed trace and norm coefficients is calculated in certain special cases and a general bound for that number is obtained improving the bound by Wan if $m$ is small compared to $q$. As a corollary, sharp bounds are obtained for the number of elements in $\F_{q^3}$ with prescribed trace and norm over $\F_q$ improving the estimates by Katz in this special case. Moreover, a characterization of Kloosterman sums over $\F_{2^r}$ divisible by three is given generalizing the …
Let $p\equiv 2,5\mod 9$ be an odd prime. In this paper, we prove that at least one of $3p$ and $3p^2$ is a cube sum by constructing certain nontrivial Heegner points. We also establish the explicit Gross-Zagier formulae for these Heegner points and give variants of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture of the related elliptic curves.
An elementary approach is shown which derives the value of the Gauss sum of a cubic character over a finite field $\mathbb F_{2^s}$ without using Davenport-Hasse's theorem (namely, if $s$ is odd the Gauss sum is -1, and if $s$ is even its value is $-(-2)^{s/2}$).
We study the character sums \[ϕ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left(x(x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right),\textrm{ and, } ψ_{(m,n)}(a,b)=\sum_{x\in\mathbb{F}_q}ϕ\left((x^{m}+a)(x^{n}+b)\right)\] where $ϕ$ is the quadratic character defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$. These sums are expressed in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric series over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Then we use these expressions to exhibit the number of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on families of hyperelliptic curves and their Jacobian varieties.
We prove that $164634913$ is the smallest positive integer that is a sum of two rational sixth powers but not a sum of two integer sixth powers. If $C_{k}$ is the curve $x^{6} + y^{6} = k$, we use the existence of morphisms from $C_{k}$ to elliptic curves, together with the Mordell-Weil sieve, to rule out the existence of rational points on $C_{k}$ for various $k$.
We introduce and study "elliptic zeta values", a two-parameter deformation of the values of Riemann's zeta function at positive integers. They are essentially Taylor coefficients of the logarithm of the elliptic gamma function, and share the SL(3,Z) modular properties of this function. Elliptic zeta values at even integers are related to Eisenstein series and thus to sums of odd powers of divisors. The elliptic zeta values at odd integers can be expressed in terms of generating series of sums of even powers of divisors.
Inspired by the analogy between the group of units $\mathbb{F}_p^{\times}$ of the finite field with $p$ elements and the group of points $E(\mathbb{F}_p)$ of an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{F}_p$, E. Kowalski, A. Akbary & D. Ghioca, and T. Freiberg & P. Kurlberg investigated the asymptotic behaviour of elliptic curve sums analogous to the Titchmarsh divisor sum $\sum_{p \leq x} τ(p + a) \sim C x$. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the constants $C(E)$ emerging in the asymptotic study of these elliptic curve divisor sums. Specifically, by analyzing the division fields of an ellipt…
In the study of the arithmetic structure of elliptic modular groups which are the fundamental groups of compactified modular curves, these truncated group algebras and their direct sums are considered to construct elliptic modular motives. Our main result is a new theory of Hecke operators on these motives which gives a congruence relation to the Galois action, and their motivic decomposition. Using our Hecke theory, we show that elliptic modular motives are the direct sums of pure motives over certain number fields. This fact implies a kind of algebraicity on iterated Shimura integrals, i.e.,…
For the Gauss sums which are defined by S_n(a,q) := \sum_{x (mod q)} e(ax^n/q), Stechkin (1975) conjectured that the quantity A := \sup_{n,q\ge 2} \max_{\gcd(a,q)=1} |S_n(a,q)|/q^(1-1/n) is finite. Shparlinski (1991) proved that A is finite, but in the absence of effective bounds on the sums S_n(a,q) the precise determination of A has remained intractable for many years. Using recent work of Cochrane and Pinner (2011) on Gauss sums with prime moduli, in this paper we show that with the constant given by A = |S_6(4787,4606056)|/4606056^(5/6) = 4.709236... one has the sharp inequality |S_n(a,q)|…
Here we study the recently introduced notion of a locally harmonic Maass form and its applications to the theory of $L$-functions. In particular, we find finite formulas for certain twisted central $L$-values of a family of elliptic curves in terms of finite sums over canonical binary quadratic forms. This yields vastly simpler formulas related to work of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for such $L$-values, and extends beyond their framework to special non-CM elliptic curves.
This work is a sequel of a previous work of one of the authors (Y.Ô), which treated certain congruence relation between an elliptic Gauss sum and a coefficient of power series expansion at the origin of the lemniscate sine function. We extend the previous result (in \cite{O}) which concerned only for non-vanishing elliptic Gauss sums. We give new congruence relations between power series coefficients of the lemniscate cosine function, which hold if and only if the corresponding elliptic Gauss sum vanishes.
Under the Riemann Hypothesis for Dirichlet L-functions, we improve on the error term in a smoothed version of an estimate for the density of elliptic curves with square-free $Δ=D/16$, where D is the discriminant, by T.D. Browning and the author. To achieve this improvement, we elaborate on our methods for counting weighted solutions of inhomogeneous cubic congruences to power-ful moduli. The novelty lies in going a step further in the explicit evaluation of complete exponential sums and saving a factor by averaging over the moduli.
In this paper, elliptic curves theory is used for solving the Diophantine equations X^3+Y^3+Z^3+aU^k=a_0U_0^{t_0}+...+a_nU_n^{t_n}, k=3,4 where n, ti are natural numbers and a, a_i are fixed arbitrary rational numbers. We try to transform each case of the above Diophantine equations to a cubic elliptic curve of positive rank, then get infinitely many integer solutions for each case. We also solve these Diophantine equations for some values of n, a, a_i, t_i, and obtain infinitely many solutions for each case, and show among the other things that how sums of four, five, or more cubics can be wr…
We give bounds for exponential sums over curves defined over Galois rings. We first define summation subsets as the images of lifts of points from affine opens of the reduced curve, and we give bounds for the degrees of their coordinate functions. Then we get bounds for exponential sums, extending results of Kumar et al., Winnie Li over the projective line, and Voloch Walker over elliptic and $C_{ab}$ curves.
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ denote a finite field of characteristic $p \geq 5$ and let $d = q+1$. Let $E_d$ denote the elliptic curve over the function field $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}(t)$ defined by the equation $y^2 + xy - t^d y = x^3$. Its rank is $q$ when $q \equiv 1 \bmod 3$ and its rank is $q-2$ when $q \equiv 2 \bmod 3$. We describe an explicit method for producing points on this elliptic curve. In case $q \not\equiv 11 \bmod 12$, our method produces points which generate a full-rank subgroup. Our strategy for producing rational points on $E_d$ makes use of a dominant map from the degree $d$ Fermat surfa…
In this paper we derive many infinite families of explicit exact formulas involving either squares or triangular numbers, two of which generalize Jacobi's 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. In fact, we similarly generalize to infinite families all of Jacobi's explicitly stated degree 2, 4, 6, 8 Lambert series expansions of classical theta functions. In addition, we extend Jacobi's special analysis of 2 squares, 2 triangles, 6 squares, 6 triangles to 12 squares, 12 triangles, 20 squares, 20 triangles, respectively. These results, depen…
Let $Y_K\to X_K$ be a ramified cyclic covering of curves, where $K$ is a cyclotomic field. In this work we study the $p$-rank of the reduction $\rm{mod}\, p$ of a model of the jacobian of $Y_K$. In this way, we obtain counterparts of the Deuring polynomial, defined for elliptic curves, for genus greater than one. Moreover, we show that curves $Y_K$ give Hecke characters for cyclotomic fields. To carry out this study we use Jacobi sums and certain $L$-functions.
