We produce a canonical filtration for locally free sheaves on an open p-adic annulus equipped with a Frobenius structure. Using this filtration, we deduce a conjecture of Crew on p-adic differential equations, analogous to Grothendieck's local monodromy theorem (also a consequence of results of Andre and of Mebkhout). Namely, given a finite locally free sheaf on an open p-adic annulus with a connection and a compatible Frobenius structure, the corresponding module admits a basis over a finite cover of the annulus on which the connection acts via a nilpotent matrix.

In [DW05] and [DW07], C. Deninger and A. Werner developed a partial p-adic analogue of the classical Narasimhan-Seshadri correspondence between vector bundles and representations of the fundamental group. We will investigate the various monodromy groups that occur in this theory, that is the image of these representations and their Zariski closure as well as the Tannaka dual group of these vector bundles.
In 2011 Lemahieu and Van Proeyen proved the Monodromy Conjecture for the local topological zeta function of a non-degenerated surface singularity. We start from their work and obtain the same result for Igusa's p-adic and the motivic zeta function. In the p-adic case, this is, for a polynomial f in Z[x,y,z] satisfying f(0,0,0)=0 and non-degenerated with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we show that every pole of the local p-adic zeta function of f induces an eigenvalue of the local monodromy of f at some point of the complex zero locus of f close to the origin. Essentially the entire paper is…
We provide an effective version of Katz' criterion for finiteness of the monodromy group of a lisse, pure of weight zero, $\ell$-adic sheaf on a normal variety over a finite field, depending on the numerical complexity of the sheaf
We establish a generalization of the p-adic local monodromy theorem (of Andre, Mebkhout, and the author) in which differential equations on rigid analytic annuli are replaced by differential equations on so-called fake annuli. The latter correspond loosely to completions of a Laurent polynomial ring with respect to a monomial valuation. The result represents a step towards a higher-dimensional version of the p-adic local monodromy theorem (the "problem of semistable reduction"); it can also be viewed as a slightly novel presentation of the original p-adic local monodromy theorem.
We give a criterion for the good reduction of semistable $K3$ surfaces over $p$-adic fields using purely $p$-adic methods. We use neither $p$-adic Hodge theory nor transcendental methods as in the analogous proofs of criteria for good reduction of curves or $K3$ surfaces. We achieve our goal by realizing the special fiber $X_s$ of a semistable model $X$ of a $K3$ surface over the $p$-adic field $K$, $X_K$ as a special fiber of a log-family in characteristic $p$ and use an arithmetic version of the Clemens-Schimd exact sequence in order to obtain a Kulikov-Persson-Pinkham classification theorem…
This primarily expository article collects together some facts from the literature about the monodromy of differential equations on a p-adic (rigid analytic) annulus, though often with simpler proofs. These include Matsuda's classification of quasi-unipotent nabla-modules, the Christol-Mebkhout construction of the ramification filtration, and the Christol-Dwork Frobenius antecedent theorem. We also briefly discuss the p-adic local monodromy theorem without proof.
Let $X$ be a smooth connected algebraic curve over an algebraically closed field $k$. We study the deformation of $\ell$-adic Galois representations of the function field of $X$ while keeping the local Galois representations at all places undeformed.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, and $G_0$ be a Barsotti-Tate group (or $p$-divisible group) over k. We denote by $S$ the "algebraic" local moduli in characteristic p of $G_0$, by $G$ the universal deformation of $G_0$ over $S$, and by $U\subset S$ the ordinary locus of $G$. The etale part of $G$ over $U$ gives rise to a monodromy representation $ρ$ of the fundamental group of $U$ on the Tate module of $G$. Motivated by a famous theorem of Igusa, we prove in this article that $ρ$ is surjective if $G_0$ is connected and HW-cyclic. This latter condition is equivale…
In this paper we prove a Gross-Zagier type formula for the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function of an elliptic modular form f of higher weight and of multiplicative type at p. For such f we also decribe explicitely the local Galois representation attached to it at p and compare the Fontaine-Mazur and Teitelbaum L-invariants.
In this paper, we seek an appropriate definition for a Shimura curve of Hodge type in positive characteristics, i.e. a characterization, in terms of geometry mod p, of curves in positive characteristics which are reduction of Shimura curves over the complex field. Specifically, we study the liftablity of a curve in moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties over k, char k=p. We show that some conditions on the l-adic monodromy over such a curve imply that this curve can be lifted to a Shimura curve.
Let $ρ$ be a finite-dimensional faithful representation of a semisimple algebraic group $G$. By means of a deformation argument, we show that there exists a family of Abelian varieties over a smooth and projective curve over the algebraic closure of a prime field of positive characteristic, such that its $\ell$-adic monodromy group covers $G$ and its $\ell$-adic monodromy representation contains $ρ$.
We describe a 3-step filtration on all logarithmic abelian varieties with constant degeneration. The obstruction to descending this filtration, as a variegated extension, from logarithmic geometry to algebraic geometry is encoded in a bilinear pairing valued in the characteristic monoid of the base. This pairing is realized as the monodromy pairing in p-adic, l-adic, and Betti cohomolgies, and recovers the Picard-Lefschetz transformation in the case of Jacobians. The Hodge realization of the filtration is the monodromy weight filtration on the limit mixed Hodge structure.
We give a bound for the order of the local monodromy of a compatible system of l-adic representations, which is independent of l. For the etale cohomology of a variety, the bound depends only on some numerical invariants of varieties.
We study horizontal semistable and horizontal de Rham representations of the absolute Galois group of a certain smooth affinoid over a p-adic field. In particular, we prove that a horizontal de Rham representation becomes horizontal semistable after a finite extension of the base field. As an application, we show that every de Rham local system on a smooth rigid analytic variety becomes horizontal semistable etale locally around every classical point. We also discuss potentially crystalline loci of de Rham local systems and cohomologically potentially good reduction loci of smooth proper morph…
For any simple algebraic group $G$ of exceptional type, we construct geometric $\ell$-adic Galois representations with algebraic monodromy group equal to $G$, in particular producing the first such examples in types $\mathrm{F}_4$ and $\mathrm{E}_6$. To do this, we extend to general reductive groups Ravi Ramakrishna's techniques for lifting odd two-dimensional Galois representations to geometric $\ell$-adic representations.
The weight-monodromy conjecture claims the coincidence of the weight filtration and the monodromy filtration, up to shift, on the $l$-adic étale cohomology of a proper smooth variety over a complete discrete valuation field. Although it has been proved in some cases, the case of dimension $\geq 3$ in mixed characteristic is still open so far. The aim of this paper is to give a proof of the weight-monodromy conjecture for a threefold which has a projective strictly semistable model such that, for each irreducible component of the special fiber, the Picard number is equal to the second $l$-adic …
For a proper semistable curve $X$ over a DVR of mixed characteristics we reprove the "invariant cycles theorem" with trivial coefficients (see Chiarellotto, 1999) i.e. that the group of elements annihilated by the monodromy operator on the first de Rham cohomology group of the generic fiber of $X$ coincides with the first rigid cohomology group of its special fiber, without the hypothesis that the residue field of $\cal V$ is finite. This is done using the explicit description of the monodromy operator on the de Rham cohomology of the generic fiber of $X$ with coefficients convergent $F$-isocr…

For a complex polynomial or analytic function f, one has been studying intensively its so-called local zeta functions or complex powers; these are integrals of |f|^{2s}w considered as functions in s, where the w are differential forms with compact support. There is a strong correspondence between their poles and the eigenvalues of the local monodromy of f. In particular Barlet showed that each monodromy eigenvalue of f is of the form exp(a2iπ), where a is such a pole. We prove an analogous result for similar p-adic complex powers, called Igusa (local) zeta functions, but mainly for the related…
Let $R$ be a strictly local ring complete for a discrete valuation, with fraction field $K$ and residue field of characteristic $p > 0$. Let $X$ be a smooth, proper variety over $K$. Nicaise conjectured that the rational volume of $X$ is equal to the trace of the tame monodromy operator on $\ell$-adic cohomology if $X$ is cohomologically tame. He proved this equality if $X$ is a curve. We study his conjecture from the point of view of logarithmic geometry, and prove it for a class of varieties in any dimension: those having logarithmic good reduction.
For a family of varieties, we prove that the alternating sum of the traces of "local" monodromy acting on the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology groups of the generic fiber is an integer which is independent of $\ell$.
In this paper, we prove a $p$-adic analogous of the Kulikov-Persson-Pinkham classification theorem [Persson:1981wp] for the central fiber of a degeneration of $K3$-surfaces in terms of the nilpotency degree of the monodromy of the family. Namely, let $X_K$ be a be a smooth, projective $K3$-surface which has a minimal semi-stable model $X$ over $\mathcal O_K$. If we let $N_{st}$ be the monodromy operator on $D_{st}(H^2_{et}}(X_{\overline K},\mathbb Q_p))$, then we prove that the degree of nilpotency of $N_{st}$ determines the type of the special fiber of $X$. As a consequence we give a criterio…
The classical Zariski-van Kampen theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of a complex algebraic curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$. The first generalization of this theorem to singular (quasi-projective) varieties was given by the first author. In both cases, the relations are generated by the standard monodromy variation operators associated with the special members of a generic pencil of hyperplane sections. In the present paper, we give a new generalization in which the relations are generated by the relative monodromy variation operators introduced by D. Chéniot and th…
A p-adic analogue of the pseudonorm version of the birational Torelli type theorem is obtained via a comparison theorem of image closures. Among other results obtained, we have a criterion for existence of rational points of canonically polarized surfaces over finite fields.
We the study of the monodromy of local systems with bounded ramification on a punctured disc defined over a non-archimedean valued field of characteristic zero. First, we construct the local Fourier transforms and we establish their main properties. Also, we show that the Fourier transform of a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification on the affine line, is again a "perverse sheaf" with bounded ramification (we put that in quotes, because actually the language of perversity is not used). These foundations are then used to exhibit a natural break decomposition for local systems with bounded r…
We study the relation of the middle convolution to the $\ell$-adic Fourier transformation in the étale context. Using Katz' work and Laumon's theory of local Fourier transformations we obtain a detailed description of the local monodromy and the determinant of Katz' middle convolution functor $\MC_χ$ in the tame case. The theory of local $ε$-constants then implies that the property of an étale sheaf of having an at most quadratic determinant is often preserved under $\MC_χ$ if $χ$ is quadratic.
We study the topology of the punctured disc defined over a non-archimedean field of characteristic zero. Chapter two includes a new proof of the so-called p-adic Riemann existence theorem. This release completes the study of breaks and break decompositions of the monodromy representation of a sheaf around the origin of the punctured disc.
For a proper, flat, generically smooth scheme $X$ over a complete DVR with finite residue field of characteristic $p$, we define a specialization morphism from the rigid cohomology of the geometric special fibre to $D_{crys}$ of the $p$-adic étale cohomology of the geometric generic fibre, and we make a conjecture ("$p$-adic local invariant cycle theorem") that describes the behavior of this map for regular $X$, analogous to the situation in $l$-adic étale cohomology for $l\neq p$. Our main result is that, if $X$ has semistable reduction, this specialization map induces an isomorphism on the s…
We calculate the local Fourier transformations for a class of $\bar{\mathbb Q}_\ell$-sheaves. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Laumon and Malgrange. As an application, we calculate the local monodromy of $\ell$-adic hypergeometric sheaves introduced by Katz. We also discuss the characteristic $p$ analogue of the Turrittin-Levelt Theorem for $D$-modules. The method used in this paper can be used to show a conjecture of Ramero which states that the Fourier transformation of an analytic sheaf with meromorphic ramification still has meromorphic ramification.
For a subvariety of a smooth projective variety, consider the family of smooth hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree containing it, and take the quotient of the middle cohomology of the hypersurfaces by the cohomology of the ambient variety and also by the cycle classes of the irreducible components of the subvariety. Using Deligne's semisimplicity theorem together with Steenbrink's theory for semistable degenerations, we give a simpler proof of the first author's theorem (with a better bound of the degree of hypersurfaces) that this monodromy representation is irreducible.
A well-known theorem of Kulikov, Persson and Pinkham states that a degeneration of a family of K3-surfaces with trivial monodromy can be completed to a smooth family. We give a simple example that an analogous statement does not hold for Calabi-Yau threefolds.
The aim of this paper is to study certain properties of the weight spectral sequences of Rapoport-Zink by a specialization argument. By reducing to the case over finite fields previously treated by Deligne, we prove that the weight filtration and the monodromy filtration defined on the $l$-adic étale cohomology coincide, up to shift, for proper smooth varieties over equal characteristic local fields. We also prove that the weight spectral sequences degenerate at $E_2$ in any characteristic without using log geometry. Moreover, as an application, we give a modulo $p>0$ reduction proof of a Hodg…
The goal of the present text is to state and prove a generalization of Raynaud localization theorem in the setting of derived geometry. More explicitly, we show that the $\infty$-category of quasi-paracompact and quasi-separated derived $k$-analytic spaces can be realized as a localization of the $\infty$-category of admissible derived formal schemes. We construct a derived rigidification functor generalizing Raynaud rigidification functor. In order to construct the latter we will need to formalize derived formal $\mathcal{O}_k$-adic formal geometry via a structured spaces approach. We prove t…
We define a numerical invariant, the differential Swan conductor, for certain differential modules on a rigid analytic annulus over a p-adic field. This gives a definition of a conductor for p-adic Galois representations with finite local monodromy over an equal characteristic discretely valued field, which agrees with the usual Swan conductor when the residue field is perfect. We also establish analogues of some key properties of the usual Swan conductor, such as integrality (the Hasse-Arf theorem), and the fact that the graded pieces of the associated ramification filtration on Galois groups…
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces over local fields. We prove that every eigenvalue of the action is a Weil number when either a rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. Since a smooth rigid space is locally isomorphic to the Raynaud generic fiber of an algebraizable formal scheme, we can use the techniques of alterations and monodromy spectral sequences in the smooth case. In the general case, we use the continuity theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteri…
We strengthen the compatibility between local and global Langlands correspondences for GL_{n} when n is even and l=p. Let L be a CM field and Π a cuspidal automorphic representation of GL_{n}(\mathbb{A}_{L}) which is conjugate self-dual and regular algebraic. In this case, there is an l-adic Galois representation associated to Π, which is known to be compatible with local Langlands in almost all cases when l=p by recent work of Barnet-Lamb, Gee, Geraghty and Taylor. The compatibility was proved only up to semisimplification unless Π has Shin-regular weight. We extend the compatibility to Frobe…
