The classical Zariski-van Kampen theorem gives a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of a complex algebraic curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$. The first generalization of this theorem to singular (quasi-projective) varieties was given by the first author. In both cases, the relations are generated by the standard monodromy variation operators associated with the special members of a generic pencil of hyperplane sections. In the present paper, we give a new generalization in which the relations are generated by the relative monodromy variation operators introduced by D. Chéniot and the first author. The advantage of using the relative operators is not only to cover a larger class of varieties but also to unify the Zariski-van Kampen type theorems for the fundamental group and for higher homotopy groups. In the special case of non-singular varieties, the main result of this paper was conjectured by D. Chéniot and the first author.
We formulate and prove a generalization of Zariski-van Kampen theorem on the topological fundamental groups of smooth complex algebraic varieties. As an application, we prove a hyperplane section theorem of Lefschetz-Zariski-van Kampen type for the fundamental groups of the complements to the Grassmannian dual varieties.
We present a method of Zariski-van Kampen type for the calculation of the transcendental lattice of a complex projective surface. As an application, we calculate the transcendental lattices of complex singular K3 surfaces associated with an arithmetic Zariski pair of maximizing sextics of type $A_{10}+A_{9}$ that are defined over a real quadratic field and are conjugate to each other over the field of rational numbers.
In 1933, van Kampen described the fundamental groups of the complements of plane complex projective algebraic curves. Recently, Chéniot-Libgober proved an analogue of this result for higher homotopy groups of the complements of complex projective hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. Their description is in terms of some "homotopical variation operators". We generalize here the notion of "homotopical variation" to (singular) quasi-projective varieties. This is a first step for further generalizations of van Kampen's theorem. A conjecture, with a first approach, is stated in the special ca…
This paper gives an extension of the classical Zariski-van Kampen theorem describing the fundamental groups of the complements of plane singular curves by generators and relations. It provides a procedure for computation of the first non-trivial higher homotopy groups of the complements of singular projective hypersurfaces in terms of the homotopy variation operators introduced here.
Let $\mathcal{M}_{n,2n+2}$ be the coarse moduli space of CY manifolds arising from a crepant resolution of double covers of $\mathbb{P}^n$ branched along $2n+2$ hyperplanes in general position. We show that the monodromy group of a good family for $\mathcal{M}_{n,2n+2}$ is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic or orthogonal group if $n\geq 3$. In particular, the period map does not give a uniformization of any partial compactification of the coarse moduli space as a Shimura variety whenever $n\geq 3$. This disproves a conjecture of Dolgachev. As a consequence, the fundamental group of …
We prove a general Zariski-van Kampen-Lefschetz type theorem for higher homotopy groups of generic and nongeneric pencils on singular open complex spaces.
We give conditions under which the monodromy group of an $A$-hypergeometric system is invariant under modifications of the collection of characters $A$. The key ingredient is a Zariski--Lefschetz type theorem for principal $A$-determinants.
In [DW05] and [DW07], C. Deninger and A. Werner developed a partial p-adic analogue of the classical Narasimhan-Seshadri correspondence between vector bundles and representations of the fundamental group. We will investigate the various monodromy groups that occur in this theory, that is the image of these representations and their Zariski closure as well as the Tannaka dual group of these vector bundles.
We develop a modification of the Zariski--van Kampen approach for the computation of the fundamental group of a trigonal curve with improper fibers. As an application, we list the deformation families and compute the fundamental groups of all irreducible maximizing simple sextics with a type $\bold D$ singular point.
In this paper we study the monodromy action on the first Betti and de Rham non-abelian cohomology arising from a family of smooth curves. We describe sufficient conditions for the existence of a Zariski dense monodromy orbit. In particular we show that for a Lefschetz pencil of sufficiently high degree the monodromy action is dense.
It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in $\mathbb{P}^3$ does {\em not} have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is natura…
For line arrangements in P^2 with nice combinatorics (in particular, for those which are nodal away the line at infinity), we prove that the combinatorics contains the same information as the fundamental group together with the meridianal basis of the abelianization. We consider higher dimensional analogs of the above situation. For these analogs, we give purely combinatorial complete descriptions of the following topological invariants (over an arbitrary field): the twisted homology of the complement, with arbitrary rank one coefficients; the homology of the associated Milnor fiber and Alexan…

We show that some hypergeometric monodromy groups in Sp(4,Z) split as free or amalgamated products and hence by cohomological considerations give examples of Zariski dense, non-arithmetic monodromy groups of real rank 2. In particular, we show that the monodromy of the natural quotient of the Dwork family of quintic threefolds in P^{4} splits as Z*Z/5. As a consequence, for a smooth quintic threefold X we show that a certain group of autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves is an Artin group of dihedral type.
In this note, we present a new method for computing fundamental groups of curve complements using a variation of the Zariski-Van Kampen method on general ruled surfaces. As an application we give an alternative (computation-free) proof for the fundamental group of generic $(p,q)$-torus curves.
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety. The group of autoequivalences of the derived category of X acts naturally on its singular cohomology H(X, Q) and we denote by Geq(X) the Zariski closure of its image in Gl(H(X, Q)). We study the relation of the Lie algebra LieGeq(X) and the Neron-Severi Lie algebra gNS(X) in case X has trivial canonical line bundle. At the same time for mirror symmetric families of (weakly) Calabi-Yau varieties we consider a conjecture of Kontsevich on the relation between the monodromy of one family and the group Geq(X) for a very general member X of the other fam…
In this paper, complement-equivalent arithmetic Zariski pairs will be exhibited answering in the negative a question by Eyral-Oka on these curves and their groups. A complement-equivalent arithmetic Zariski pair is a pair of complex projective plane curves having Galois-conjugate equations in some number field whose complements are homeomorphic, but whose embeddings in $\mathbb{P}^2$ are not. Most of the known invariants used to detect Zariski pairs depend on the étale fundamental group. In the case of Galois-conjugate curves, their étale fundamental groups coincide. Braid monodromy factorizat…
We show that the kernel of the monodromy representation for hypersurfaces of degree d and dimension n is large for d at least three with the exception of the cases (d,n) = (3,0) and (3,1). For these the kernel is finite. By "large" we mean a group that admits a homomorphism to a semisimple Lie group of noncompact type with Zariski-dense image. By the Tits alternative a large group contains a free subgroup of rank two.
The fundamental group of a smooth projective variety is fibered if it maps onto the fundamental group of smooth curve of genus 2 or more. The goal of this paper is to establish some strong restrictions on these groups, and in particular on the fundamental groups of Kodaira surfaces. In the specific case of a Kodaira surface, these results are in the form of restrictions on the monodromy representation into the mapping class group. When the monodromy is composed with certain standard representations, the images are Zariski dense in a semisimple group of Hermitian type.
Suppose $X$ is a smooth quasiprojective variety over $\cc$ and $ρ: π_1(X,x) \to SL(2,\cc)$ is a Zariski-dense representation with quasiunipotent monodromy at infinity. Then $ρ$ factors through a map $X\to Y$ with $Y$ either a DM-curve or a Shimura modular stack.
We consider spaces of plane curves in the setting of algebraic geometry and of singularity theory. On one hand there are the complete linear systems, on the other we consider unfolding spaces of bivariate polynomials of Brieskorn-Pham type. For suitable open subspaces we can define the bifurcation braid monodromy taking values in the Zariski resp. Artin braid group. In both cases we give the generators of the image. These results are compared with the corresponding geometric monodromy. It takes values in the mapping class group of braided surfaces. Our final result gives a precise statement ab…
We study the Zariski closure of the monodromy group $\mathbf{Mon}$ of Lauricella's hypergeometric function $F_C$. If the identity component $\mathbf{Mon}^0$ acts irreducibly, then $\overline{\mathbf{Mon}} \cap \mathbf{SL}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C})$ must be one of classical groups $\mathbf{SL}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C}), \mathbf{SO}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $\mathbf{Sp}_{2^n}(\mathbb{C})$. We also study Calabi-Yau varieties arising from integral representations of $F_C$.
Computation of the fundamental group of the complement in the complex plane of the branch curve S , of a generic projection of the Veronese surface to the plane is presented. This paper is a continuation of our previous papers: Braid Group Technique I - IV. In I and II we developed algorithms to compute braid monodromy of a brunch curve, provided there exist a degeneration of the surface to union of planes in a configuration where the associated branch curve is partial to a line arrangement dual to generic. In III we constructed a degeneration of the Veronese surface of order 3 to union of pla…
We discuss two results about projective representations of fundamental groups of quasiprojective varieties. The first is a realization result which, under a nonresonance assumption, allows to realize such representations as monodromy representations of flat projective logarithmic connections. The second is a lifting result: any representation as above, after restriction to a Zariski open set and finite pull-back, can be lifted to a linear representation.
We give an alternative proof of Faltings's theorem (Mordell's conjecture): a curve of genus at least two over a number field has finitely many rational points. Our argument utilizes the set-up of Faltings's original proof, but is in spirit closer to the methods of Chabauty and Kim: we replace the use of abelian varieties by a more detailed analysis of the variation of $p$-adic Galois representations in a family of algebraic varieties. The key inputs into this analysis are the comparison theorems of $p$-adic Hodge theory, and explicit topological computations of monodromy. By the same methods w…
