Suppose $X$ is a smooth quasiprojective variety over $\cc$ and $ρ: π_1(X,x) \to SL(2,\cc)$ is a Zariski-dense representation with quasiunipotent monodromy at infinity. Then $ρ$ factors through a map $X\to Y$ with $Y$ either a DM-curve or a Shimura modular stack.
The main purpose of this paper is to provide a structure theorem for codimension one singular transversely projective foliationson projective manifolds. To reach our goal, we firstly extend Corlette-Simpson's classification of rank two representationsof fundamental groups of quasiprojective manifolds by dropping the hypothesis of quasi-unipotency at infinity.Secondly we establish an analogue classification for rank two flat meromorphic connections. In particular, we prove that a rank two flat meromorphic connection with irregular singularities having non trivial Stokesprojectively factors throu…
In this paper, using Gromov-Jost-Korevaar-Schoen technique of harmonic maps to nonpositively curved targets, we study the representations of the fundamental groups of quasiprojective varieties. As an application of the above considerations we give a proof of a weak version of the Shafarevich Conjecture.
We discuss two results about projective representations of fundamental groups of quasiprojective varieties. The first is a realization result which, under a nonresonance assumption, allows to realize such representations as monodromy representations of flat projective logarithmic connections. The second is a lifting result: any representation as above, after restriction to a Zariski open set and finite pull-back, can be lifted to a linear representation.
We characterize the quasiprojective groups that appear as fundamental groups of compact $3$-manifolds (with or without boundary). We also characterize all closed $3$-manifolds that admit good complexifications. These answer questions of Friedl--Suciu, \cite{fs}, and Totaro \cite{tot}
Let $X$ be a projective manifold, and $D$ be a normal crossing divisor of $X$. By Jost-Zuo's theorem that if we have a reductive representation $ρ$ of the fundamental group $π_{1}(X^{*})$ with unipotent local monodromy, where $X^*=X-D$, then there exists a tame pluriharmonic metric $h$ on the flat bundle $\mathcal V$ associated to the local system $\mathbb V$ obtain from $ρ$ over $X^*$. Therefore, we get a harmonic bundle $(E, θ, h)$, where $θ$ is the Higgs field, i.e. a holomorphic section of $End(E)\otimesΩ^{1,0}_{X^*}$ satisfying $θ^2=0$. In this paper, we study the harmonic bundle $(E,θ,h)…
We generalize the Harnack-Thom theorem to relate the ranks of the Lawson homology groups with $\Z_2$-coefficients of a real quasiprojective variety with the ranks of its reduced real Lawson homology groups. In the case of zero-cycle group, we recover the classical Harnack-Thom theorem and generalize the classical version to include real quasiprojective varieties. We use Weil's construction of Picard varieties to construct reduced real Picard groups, and Milnor's construction of universal bundles to construct some weak models of classifying spaces of some cycle groups. These weak models are use…
Lasell and Ramachandran show that the existence of rational curves of positive self-intersection on a smooth projective surface $X$ implies that all the finite dimensional linear representations of the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ are finite. In this article, we generalize Lasell and Ramachandran's result to the case of $π_1$-small divisors on quasiprojective varieties. We also study $π_1$-small curves and hyperbolicity properties of smooth projective surfaces of general type with infinite fundamental groups.
We consider the class of quasiprojective varieties admitting a dominant morphism onto a curve with negative Euler characteristic. The existence of such a morphism is a property of the fundamental group. We show that for a variety in this class the number of maps onto a hyperbolic curve or surfaces can be estimated in terms of the numerical invariants of the fundamental group. We use this estimates to find the number of biholomorphic automorphisms of complements to some arrangements of lines.
We construct new families of smooth Fano fourfolds with Picard rank 1, which contain cylinders, i.e., Zariski open subsets of form $Z\times A^1$, where $Z$ is a quasiprojective variety. The affine cones over such a fourfold admit effective $G_a$-actions. Similar constructions of cylindrical Fano threefolds and fourfolds were done previously in [KPZ11, KPZ14, PZ15].
We construct 4 di erent families of smooth Fano fourfolds with Picard rank 1, which contain cylinders, i.e., Zariski open subsets of the form Z x A1, where Z is a quasiprojective variety. The affi ne cones over such a fourfold admit eff ective Ga-actions. Similar constructions of cylindrical Fano threefolds were done previously in our papers jointly with Takashi Kishimoto.
Cohomology support loci of rank one local systems of a smooth quasiprojective complex algebraic variety are finite unions of torsion-translated complex subtori of the character variety of the fundamental group. Tangent spaces of the character variety are (partially) represented by logarithmic 1-forms. In this paper, we give a relation between cohomology support loci and the natural strata of 1-forms given by the dimension of the vanishing locus. This relation generalizes the one for the projective case due to Green and Lazarsfeld and also generalizes the partial relation due to Dimca in the qu…
We present two results about the relationship between fundamental groups of quasiprojective manifolds and linear systems on a projectivization. We prove the existence of a plane curve with non-abelian fundamental group of the complement which does not admit a mapping onto an orbifold with non-abelian fundamental group. We also find an affine manifold whose irreducible components of its characteristic varieties do not come from the pull-back of the characteristic varieties of an orbifold.
Let $X/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be a smooth, geometrically connected, quasiprojective variety. Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a semisimple overconvergent $F$-isocrystal on $X$. Suppose that irreducible summands $\mathcal{E}_i$ of $\mathcal E$ have rank 2, determinant $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}_p(-1)$, and infinite monodromy at $\infty$. Suppose further that for each closed point $x$ of $X$, the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{E}$ at $x$ is in $\mathbb{Q}[t]\subset \mathbb Q_p[t]$. Then there exists a non-trivial open set $U\subset X$ such that $\mathcal{E}|_U$ comes from a family of abelian varieties on $U$. As an…
Let X be a smooth complex projective variety with basepoint x. We prove that every rigid integral irreducible representation $π_1(X,x)\to SL (3,{\mathbb C})$ is of geometric origin, i.e., it comes from some family of smooth projective varieties. This partially generalizes an earlier result by K. Corlette and the second author in the rank 2 case and answers one of their questions.
We study a hypergeometric function in two variables and a system of hypergeometric differential equations associated with this function. This is a regular holonomic system of rank $9$. We give a fundamental system of solutions to this system in terms of this hypergeometric series. We give circuit matrices along generators of the fundamental group of the complement of its singular locus with respect to our fundamental system.
Given a fixed binary form $f(u,v)$ of degree $d$ over a field $k$, the associated \emph{Clifford algebra} is the $k$-algebra $C_f=k\{u,v\}/I$, where $I$ is the two-sided ideal generated by elements of the form $(αu+βv)^{d}-f(α,β)$ with $α$ and $β$ arbitrary elements in $k$. All representations of $C_f$ have dimensions that are multiples of $d$, and occur in families. In this article we construct fine moduli spaces $U=U_{f,r}$ for the irreducible $rd$-dimensional representations of $C_f$ for each $r \geq 2$. Our construction starts with the projective curve $C \subset \mathbb{P}^{2}_{k}$ define…
We consider the structure of classes of curves on a projective simply connected surface for which fundamental groups of the complements admit free quotients having rank greater than one with irreducible components belonging to a selected subset the effective cone of the surface. In particular we show a finiteness result for such classes if the ranks of free quotients of the fundamental groups with components in the subset of effective cone are sufficiently large.
We study Kawamata log terminal singularities of full rank, i.e., $n$-dimensional klt singularities containing a large finite abelian group of rank $n$ in its regional fundamental group. The main result of this article is that klt singularities of full rank degenerate to cones over log crepant equivalent toric quotient varieties. To establish the main theorem, we reduce the proof to the study of Fano type varieties with large finite automorphisms of full rank. We prove that such Fano type varieties are log crepant equivalent toric. Furthermore, any such Fano variety of dimension $n$ contains an…
This submission replaces the arXiv:1012.5381 submission with the same title, which had been withdrawn as it contained a mistake, repaired in this submission: on $X$ projective smooth over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, we show that all irreducible stratified bundles have rank 1 if and only if the commutator $[π_1, π_1]$ of the étale fundamental group $π_1$ is a pro-$p$-group, and we show that the category of stratified bundles is semi-simple with irreducible objects of rank 1 if and only if $ π_1 $ is abelian without $p$-power quotient. This answers positively a conject…
It is shown that the commutator subgroup of the fundamental group of a smooth affine curve over an uncountable algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic is a profinite free group of rank equal to the cardinality of $k$.
In 2010 de Jong proposed a $p$-adic version of Gieseker's conjecture: if $X$ is a smooth, simply connected projective variety, then any isocrystal on $X$ is constant. This was proven by Esnault and Shiho under some additional assumptions. We show that the conjecture holds in the case of a non-proper variety with trivial tame fundamental group and for rank 1 log extendable isocrystals.
v2: A few typos corrected, a few formulations improved. On $X$ projective smooth over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$, we show that irreducible stratified bundles have rank 1 if and only if the commutator $[π_1^{{\rm \acute{e}t}}, π_1^{{\rm \acute{e}t}}]$ of the étale fundamental group is a pro-$p$-group, and we show that the category of stratified bundles is semi-simple with irreducible objects of rank 1 if and only if $ π_1^{{\rm \acute{e}t}}$ is abelian without $p$-power quotient. This answers positively a conjecture by Gieseker.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. Let $C$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve over $k$. Let $E$ be a locally free sheaf on $C$ of rank $\geq 2$. Fix an integer $d \geq 2$. Let $\mathcal{Q}$ denote the Quot scheme parameterizing torsion quotients of $E$ of degree $d$. In this article we compute the $S$-fundamental group scheme of $\mathcal{Q}$.
This expository paper details the theory of rank one Higgs bundles over a closed Riemann surface X and their relationship to representations of the fundamental group of X. We construct an equivalence between the deformation theories of flat connections and Higgs pairs. This provides an identification of moduli spaces arising in different contexts. The moduli spaces are real Lie groups. From each context arises a complex structure, and the different complex structures define a hyper-Kaehlerstructure. The twistor space, real forms, and various group actions are computed explicitly in terms of th…
We consider the moduli space of rank 2 Higgs bundles with fixed determinant over a smooth projective curve X of genus 2 over the complex numbers, and study involutions defined by tensoring the vector bundle with an element $α$ of order 2 in the Jacobian of the curve, combined with multiplication of the Higgs field by $\pm 1$. We describe the fixed points of these involutions in terms of the Prym variety of the covering of $X$ defined by $α$, and give an interpretation in terms of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group.
We prove that the geometric etale fundamental group of a (geometrically connected) rigid smooth $p$-adic affinoid curve is a semi-direct factor of a certain profinite free group. We also prove that the maximal pro-$p$ (resp. maximal prime-to-$p$) quotient of this geometric étale fundamental group is pro-$p$ free of infinite rank (resp. (pro-)prime-to-$p$ free of finite computable rank).
We prove both the group version and the Lie algebra version of the Fundamental Lemma appearing in a relative trace formula of Jacquet-Rallis in the function field case when the characteristic is greater than the rank of the relevant groups.
In this paper, we first reveal an intrinsic relation between non-abelian zeta functions and Epstein zeta functions for algebraic number fields. Then, we expose a fundamental relation between stability of lattices and distance to cusps. Next, using these two relations, we explicitly express rank two zeta functions in terms of the well-known Dedekind zeta functions. Finally, based on such an expression, we show that all zeros of rank two non-abelian zeta functions are entirely sitting on the critical line whose real part equals to 1/2. This is an integrated part of our Geo-Arithmetic Program.
We show that the fundamental groups of normal complex algebraic varieties share many properties of the fundamental groups of smooth varieties. The jump loci of rank one local systems on a normal variety are related to the jump loci of a resolution and of a smoothing of this variety.
Maximum likelihood estimation is a fundamental optimization problem in statistics. We study this problem on manifolds of matrices with bounded rank. These represent mixtures of distributions of two independent discrete random variables. We determine the maximum likelihood degree for a range of determinantal varieties, and we apply numerical algebraic geometry to compute all critical points of their likelihood functions. This led to the discovery of maximum likelihood duality between matrices of complementary ranks, a result proved subsequently by Draisma and Rodriguez.
The Chen groups of a group $G$ are the lower central series quotients of the maximal metabelian quotient of $G$. Under certain conditions, we relate the ranks of the Chen groups to the first resonance variety of $G$, a jump locus for the cohomology of $G$. In the case where $G$ is the fundamental group of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, our results positively resolve Suciu's Chen ranks conjecture. We obtain explicit formulas for the Chen ranks of a number of groups of broad interest, including pure Artin groups associated to Coxeter groups, and the group of basis-conjugatin…
A hyperbolic lattice is called \textit{$(1{,}2)$-reflective} if its automorphism group is generated by $1$- and $2$-reflections up to finite index. In this paper we prove that the fundamental polyhedron of a $\mathbb{Q}$-arithmetic cocompact reflection group in the three-dimensional Lobachevsky space contains an edge such that the distance between its framing faces is small enough. Using this fact we obtain a classification of $(1{,}2)$-reflective anisotropic hyperbolic lattices of rank $4$.
