Consider the tesselation of the hyperbolic plane by m-gons, l per vertex. In its 1-skeleton, we compute the growth series of vertices, geodesics, tuples of geodesics with common extremities. We also introduce and enumerate "holly trees", a family of reduced loops in these graphs. We then apply Grigorchuk's result relating cogrowth and random walks to obtain lower estimates on the spectral radius of the Markov operator associated with a symmetric random walk on these graphs.
We show existence of the weak large deviation principle, with a convex rate function, for the renormalized distance from the starting point of irreducible random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups. Under the assumption of finiteness of exponential moments, the full large deviation principle holds, and the rate function governing it can be expressed as the Fenchel-Legendre transform of the limiting logarithmic moment generating function of the sequence of renormalized distances.
Let G be a non-elementary torsion-free hyperbolic group. We prove that the exponential growth rate of the periodic quotient G/G^n tends to the one of G as n odd approaches infinity. Moreover we provide an estimate at which the convergence is taking place.
We show that every non-elementary group $G$ acting properly and cocompactly by isometries on a proper geodesic Gromov hyperbolic space $X$ is growth tight. In other words, the exponential growth rate of $G$ for the geometric (pseudo)-distance induced by $X$ is greater than the exponential growth rate of any of its quotients by an infinite normal subgroup. This result generalizes from a unified framework previous works of Arzhantseva-Lysenok and Sambusetti, and provides an answer to a question of the latter.
Rivin conjectured that the conjugacy growth series of a hyperbolic group is rational if and only if the group is virtually cyclic. Ciobanu, Hermiller, Holt and Rees proved that the conjugacy growth series of a virtually cyclic group is rational. Here we present the proof confirming the other direction of the conjecture, by showing that the conjugacy growth series of a non-elementary hyperbolic group is transcendental. We also present and prove some variations of Rivin's conjecture for commensurability classes and primitive conjugacy classes. We then explore Rivin's conjecture for finitely gene…
Generalising results of Razborov and Safin, and answering a question of Button, we prove that for every hyperbolic group there exists a constant $α>0$ such that for every finite subset $U$ that is not contained in a virtually cyclic subgroup $|U^n|\geqslant (α|U|)^{[(n+1)/2]}$. Similar estimates are established for groups acting acylindrically on trees or hyperbolic spaces.
We prove that every non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ acts with maximal growth on some set $X$ such that every orbit of any element $g \in G$ is finite. As a side-product of our approach we prove that if $G$ is non-elementary hyperbolic, $\HH \leq G$ is quasiconvex of infinite index then there exists $g \in G$ such that $<\HH,g>$ is quasiconvex of infinite index and is isomorphic to $\HH*<g >$ if and only if $\HH \cap E(G)= \{e\} $, where $E(G)$ is the maximal finite normal subgroup of $G$.
Extending the analogous result of Cannon and Wagreich for the fundamental groups of surfaces, we show that, for the l-regular graphs X associated to regular tessellations of hyperbolic plane by m-gons, the denominators of the growth series (which are rational and were computed by Floyd and Plotnick) are reciprocal Salem polynomials. As a consequence, the growth rates of these graphs are Salem numbers. We then derive some regularity properties for the coefficients $a_n$ of the growth series: they satisfy $$Kλ^n-R<a_n<Kλ^n+R$$ for some constants $K,R>0$, $λ>1$.
We introduce a new invariant of finitely generated groups, the ambiguity function, and prove that every finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group has a linearly bounded ambiguity function. We use this result to prove that the relative exponential growth rate $\lim \limits_{n \rightarrow \infty} \sqrt[n]{\vert B^{X}_H(n) \vert}$ of a subgroup $H$ of an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$ exists with respect to every finite generating set $X$ of $G$, if $H$ contains a loxodromic element of $G$. Further we prove that the relative exponential growth rate of every finitely generated subgro…
We define a new notion of contracting element of a group and we show that contracting elements coincide with hyperbolic elements in relatively hyperbolic groups, pseudo-Anosovs in mapping class groups, rank one isometries in groups acting properly on proper CAT(0) spaces, elements acting hyperbolically on the Bass-Serre tree in graph manifold groups. We also define a related notion of weakly contracting element, and show that those coincide with hyperbolic elements in groups acting acylindrically on hyperbolic spaces and with iwips in $Out(F_n)$, $n\geq 3$. We prove that any simple random walk…
The following short note provides an alternative proof of a result of Coornaert: namely, that given a non-elementary word-hyperbolic group $G$ with a finite generating set $X$, there exist constants $λ,D > 1$ such that \[ D^{-1}λ^n \leq |B_{G,X}(n)| \leq D λ^n \] for all $n \geq 0$, where $B_{G,X}(n)$ is the ball of radius $n$ in the Cayley graph $Γ(G,X)$.
We consider random walks on a non-elementary hyperbolic group endowed with a word distance. To a probability measure on the group are associated two numerical quantities, the rate of escape and the entropy. On the set of admissible probability measures whose support is contained in a given finite set, we show that both quantities depend in an analytic way on the probability measure. Our spectral techniques also give a new proof of the central limit theorem, and imply that the corresponding variance is analytic.
Let $Γ$ be a non-elementary relatively hyperbolic group with a finite generating set. Consider a finitely supported admissible and symmetric probability measure $μ$ on $Γ$ and a probability measure $ν$ on $\mathbb{N}$ with mean $r$. Let $\mathrm{BRW}(Γ,ν,μ)$ be the branching random walk on $Γ$ with offspring distribution $ν$ and base motion given by the random walk with step distribution $μ$. It is known that for $1 < r \leq R$ with $R$ the radius of convergence for the Green function of the random walk, the population of $\mathrm{BRW}(Γ,ν,μ)$ survives forever, but eventually vacates every fin…
Let $H$ be a hyperbolic group, $A$ and $B$ be subgroups of $H$, and $gr(H,A,B)$ be the growth function of the double cosets $AhB, h \in H$. We prove that the behavior of $gr(H,A,B)$ splits into two different cases. If $A$ and $B$ are not quasiconvex, we obtain that every growth function of a finitely presented group can appear as $gr(H,A,B)$. We can even take $A=B$. In contrast, for quasiconvex subgroups A and B of infinite index, $gr(H,A,B)$ is exponential. Moreover, there exists a constant $λ> 0$, such that $gr(H,A,B)(r) >λf_H(r)$ for all big enough $r$, where $f_H(r)$ is the growth function…
We study random walks on groups with the feature that, roughly speaking, successive positions of the walk tend to be "aligned". We formalize and quantify this property by means of the notion of deviation inequalities. We show that deviation inequalities have several consequences including Central Limit Theorems, the local Lipschitz continuity of the rate of escape and entropy, as well as linear upper and lower bounds on the variance of the distance of the position of the walk from its initial point. In a second part of the paper, we show that the (exponential) deviation inequality holds for me…
It is known that every infinite index quasi-convex subgroup $H$ of a non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ is a free factor in a larger quasi-convex subgroup of $G$. We give a probabilistic generalization of this result. That is, we show that when $R$ is a subgroup generated by independent random walks in $G$, then $\langle H, R\rangle\cong H\ast R$ with probability going to one as the lengths of the random walks go to infinity and this subgroup is quasi-convex in $G$. Moreover, our results hold for a large class of groups acting on hyperbolic metric spaces and subgroups with quasi-convex orbits…
We show that Gromov's monster groups arising from i.i.d. labelings of expander graphs do not admit non-elementary actions on geodesic hyperbolic spaces. The proof relies on comparing properties of random walks on randomly labeled graphs and on groups acting non-elementarily on hyperbolic spaces.
Let $Γ$ be a countable group acting on a geodesic Gromov-hyperbolic metric space $X$ and $μ$ a probability measure on $Γ$ whose support generates a non-elementary subsemigroup. Under the assumption that $μ$ has a finite exponential moment, we establish large deviations results for the distance and the translation length of a random walk with driving measure $μ$. From our results, we deduce a special case of a conjecture regarding large deviations of spectral radii of random matrix products.
The goal of this article is two-fold: in a first part, we prove Azuma-Hoeffding type concentration inequalities around the drift for the displacement of non-elementary random walks on hyperbolic spaces. For a proper hyperbolic space $M$, we obtain explicit bounds that depend only on $M$, the size of support of the measure as in the classical case of sums of independent random variables, and on the norm of the driving probability measure in the left regular representation of the group of isometries. We obtain uniform bounds in the case of hyperbolic groups and effective bounds for simple linear…
We give several sufficient conditions for uniform exponential growth in the setting of virtually torsion-free hierarchically hyperbolic groups. For example, any hierarchically hyperbolic group that is also acylindrically hyperbolic has uniform exponential growth. In addition, we provide a quasi-isometric characterization of hierarchically hyperbolic groups without uniform exponential growth. To achieve this, we gain new insights on the structure of certain classes of hierarchically hyperbolic groups. Our methods give a new unified proof of uniform exponential growth for several examples of gro…
In this paper we consider finitary symmetric random walks on groups. We construct new possible asymptotics for the drift. We show that the drift can be very close to linear ant yet sublinear. We also give estimates for entropy growth of these random walks. In particular, we prove that there exist infinitely many asymptotics of entropy.
We are interested in the Guivarc'h inequality for admissible random walks on finitely generated relatively hyperbolic groups, endowed with a word metric. We show that for random walks with finite super-exponential moment, if this inequality is an equality, then the Green distance is roughly similar to the word distance, generalizing results of Blach{è}re, Ha{ï}ssinsky and Mathieu for hyperbolic groups [4]. Our main application is for relatively hyperbolic groups with respect to virtually abelian subgroups of rank at least 2. We show that for such groups, the Guivarc'h inequality with respect t…
We propose the study of Markov chains on groups as a "quasi-isometry invariant" theory that encompasses random walks. In particular, we focus on certain classes of groups acting on hyperbolic spaces including (non-elementary) hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, acylindrically hyperbolic 3-manifold groups, as well as fundamental groups of certain graphs of groups with edge groups of subexponential growth. For those, we prove a linear progress result and various applications, and these lead to a Central Limit Theorem for random walks on groups quasi-isometric to the ones we consider.
We show that simple random walks on (non-trivial) relatively hyperbolic groups stay $O(\log(n))$-close to geodesics, where $n$ is the number of steps of the walk. Using similar techniques we show that simple random walks in mapping class groups stay $O(\sqrt{n\log(n)})$-close to geodesics and hierarchy paths. Along the way, we also prove a refinement of the result that mapping class groups have quadratic divergence. An application of our theorem for relatively hyperbolic groups is that random triangles in non-trivial relatively hyperbolic groups are $O(\log(n))$-thin, random points have $O(\lo…
This paper proves that in a non-elementary relatively hyperbolic group, the logarithm growth rate of any non-elementary subgroup has a linear lower bound by the logarithm of the size of the corresponding generating set. As a consequence, any non-elementary subgroup has uniform exponential growth.
We introduce a quantitative characterization of subgroup alternatives modeled on the Tits alternative in terms of group laws and investigate when this property is preserved under extensions. We develop a framework that lets us expand the classes of groups known to have locally uniform exponential growth to include extensions of either word hyperbolic or right-angled Artin groups by groups with locally uniform exponential growth. From this, we deduce that the automorphism group of a torsion-free one-ended hyperbolic group has locally uniform exponential growth. Our methods also demonstrate that…
It is shown that the growth rate $(\lim_r |B(r)|^{1/r})$ of any $k$ faces Dirichlet tiling of the real hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^d, d>2,$ is at most $k-1-ε$, for an $ε> 0$, depending only on $k$ and $d$. We don't know if there is a universal $ε_u > 0$, such that $k-1-ε_u$ upperbounds the growth rate for any $k$-regular tiling, when $ d > 2$?
This is the first of a series of two papers dealing with local limit theorems in relatively hyperbolic groups. In this first paper, we prove rough estimates for the Green function. Along the way, we introduce the notion of relative automaticity which will be useful in both papers and we show that relatively hyperbolic groups are relatively automatic. We also define the notion of spectral positive-recurrence for random walks on relatively hy-perbolic groups. We then use our estimates for the Green function to prove that $p_n \asymp R^n n^{-3/2}$ for spectrally positive-recurrent random walks, w…
We establish a dimension formula for the harmonic measure of a finitely supported and symmetric random walk on a hyperbolic group. We also characterize random walks for which this dimension is maximal. Our approach is based on the Green metric, a metric which provides a geometric point of view on random walks and, in particular, which allows us to interpret harmonic measures as \qc measures on the boundary of the group.
We show that the displacement and translation distance of non-elementary random walks on isometry groups of hyperbolic spaces satisfy large deviation principles with the same rate function $I$. Roughly, this means that there exists function $I(t)$ which accurately predicts the exponential decay rate of the probability that the translation distance of a random product of length $n$ is $tn$, and similarly for the displacement. This settles a special case of a conjecture concerning the large deviation principle for the spectral radius of random matrix products. In a second part, we give a charact…
We derive an asymptotic expansion for the subgroup of arbitrary Fuchsian groups and some other classes of large groups. Moreover, the main conjecture for Random Walks on symmetric groups is established in full generality. Both problems require subtle estimates of character values and root number multiplicities for symmetric groups, which are also of independent interest.
In the context of countable groups of polynomial volume growth, we consider a large class of random walks that are allowed to take long jumps along multiple subgroups according to power law distributions. For such a random walk, we study the large time behavior of its probability of return at time $n$ in terms of the key parameters describing the driving measure and the structure of the underlying group. We obtain assorted estimates including near-diagonal two-sided estimates and the Hölder continuity of the solutions of the associated discrete parabolic difference equation. In each case, thes…
We give a quantification of residual finiteness for the fundamental groups of hyperbolic manifolds that admit a totally geodesic immersion to a compact, right-angled Coxeter orbifold of dimension 3 or 4. Specifically, we give explicit upper bounds on residual finiteness that are linear in terms of geodesic length. We then extend the linear upper bounds to hyperbolic manifolds with a finite cover that admits such an immersion. Since the quantifications are given in terms of geodesic length, we define the geodesic residual finiteness growth and show that this growth is equivalent to the usual re…
The Poisson boundary of a group G with a probability measure μis the space of ergodic components of the time shift in the path space of the associated random walk. Via a generalization of the classical Poisson formula it gives an integral representation of bounded μ-harmonic functions on G. In this paper we develop a new method of identifying the Poisson boundary based on entropy estimates for conditional random walks. It leads to simple purely geometric criteria of boundary maximality which bear hyperbolic nature and allow us to identify the Poisson boundary with natural topological boundarie…
Given a probability measure on a finitely generated group, its Martin boundary is a way to compactify the group using the Green's function of the corresponding random walk. We give a complete topological characterization of the Martin boundary of finitely supported random walks on relatively hyperbolic groups with virtually abelian parabolic subgroups. In particular, in the case of nonuniform lattices in the real hyperbolic space H n , we show that the Martin boundary coincides with the CAT (0) boundary of the truncated space, and thus when n = 3, is homeomorphic to the Sierpinski carpet.
We show that the largest subsurface projection distance between a marking and its image under the nth step of a random walk grows logarithmically in n, with probability approaching 1 as n tends to infinity. Our setup is general and also applies to (relatively) hyperbolic groups and to $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$. We then use this result to prove Rivin's conjecture that for a random walk $(w_n)$ on the mapping class group, the shortest geodesic in the hyperbolic mapping torus $M_{w_n}$ has length on the order of $1/ \log^2(n)$.
This is the second of a series of two papers dealing with local limit theorems in relatively hyperbolic groups. In this second paper, we restrict our attention to non-spectrally degenerate random walks and we prove precise asymptotics of the probability $p_n(e, e)$ of going back to the origin at time $n$. We combine techniques adapted from thermodynamic formalism with the rough estimates of the Green function given by the first paper to show that $p_n(e, e) \sim CR^{-n} n^{-3/2}$ , where $R$ is the spectral radius of the random walk. This generalizes results of W. Woess for free products and r…
Let $S=Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$ be a hyperbolic surface of finite topological type, such that the Fuchsian group $Γ\le \operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is non-elementary, and consider any generating set $\mathfrak S$ of $Γ$. When sampling by an $n$-step random walk in $π_1(S) \cong Γ$ with each step given by an element in $\mathfrak S$, the subset of this sampled set comprised of hyperbolic elements approaches full measure as $n\to \infty$, and for this subset, the distribution of geometric lengths obeys a Law of Large Numbers, Central Limit Theorem, Large Deviations Principle, and Local Limit…
We prove that for a relatively hyperbolic group G there is a sequence of relatively hyperbolic proper quotients such that their growth rates converge to the growth rate of G. Under natural assumptions, the same conclusion holds for the critical exponent of a cusp-uniform action of G on a hyperbolic metric space. As a corollary, we obtain that the critical exponent of a torsion-free geometrically finite Kleinian group can be arbitrarily approximated by those of quotient groups. This resolves a question of Dal'bo-Peigné-Picaud-Sambusetti. Our approach is based on the study of Patterson-Sullivan …
