Let $G$ be an acylindrically hyperbolic group on a $δ$-hyperbolic space $X$. Assume there exists $M$ such that for any finite generating set $S$ of $G$, the set $S^M$ contains a hyperbolic element on $X$. Suppose that $G$ is equationally Noetherian. Then we show the set of the growth rates of $G$ is well-ordered (Theorem 1.1). The conclusion was known for hyperbolic groups, and this is a generalization.
Our result applies to all lattices in simple Lie groups of rank-1 (Theorem 1.3), and more generally, some family of relatively hyperbolic groups (Theorem 1.2). It also applies to the fundamental group, of exponential growth, of a closed orientable $3$-manifold except for the case that the manifold has Sol-geometry (Theorem 5.7).
We give a dynamical characterization of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. As an application, we prove that non-elementary convergence groups are acylindrically hyperbolic.
We generalize a well known periodicity lemma from the case of free groups to the case of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. This generalization will be used later to describe solutions of certain equations in acylindrically hyperbolic groups and to characterize verbally closed finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic subgroups of finitely presented groups.
We say that a group $G$ is acylindrically hyperbolic if it admits a non-elementary acylindrical action on a hyperbolic space. We prove that the class of acylindrically hyperbolic groups coincides with many other classes studied in the literature, e.g., the class $C_{geom}$ introduced by Hamenstadt, the class of groups admitting a non-elementary weakly properly discontinuous action on a hyperbolic space in the sense of Bestvina and Fujiwara, and the class of groups with hyperbolically embedded subgroups studied by Dahmani, Guirardel, and the author. We also record some basic results about acyli…
We generalize a version of small cancellation theory to the class of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. This class contains many groups which admit some natural action on a hyperbolic space, including non-elementary hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, mapping class groups, and groups of outer automorphisms of free groups. Several applications of this small cancellation theory are given, including to Frattini subgroups and Kazhdan constants, the construction of various \exotic"' quotients, and to approximating acylindrically hyperbolic groups in the topology of marked group presentation…
The goal of this article is to survey some recent developments in the study of groups acting on hyperbolic spaces. We focus on the class of acylindrically hyperbolic groups; it is broad enough to include many examples of interest, yet a significant part of the theory of hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups can be generalized in this context. In particular, we discuss group theoretic Dehn filling and small cancellation theory in acylindrically hyperbolic groups. Many results discussed here rely on the new generalization of relative hyperbolicity based on the notion of a hyperbolically em…
A subgroup of a group $G$ is called algebraic if it can be expressed as a finite union of solution sets to systems of equations. We prove that a non-elementary subgroup $H$ of an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$ is algebraic if and only if there exists a finite subgroup $K$ of $G$ such that $C_G(K) \leq H \leq N_G(K)$. We provide some applications of this result to free products, torsion-free relatively hyperbolic groups, and ascending chains of algebraic subgroups in acylindrically hyperbolic groups.
We study the set of homomorphisms from a fixed finitely generated group into a family of groups which are `uniformly acylindrically hyperbolic'. Our main results reduce this study to sets of homomorphisms which do not diverge in an appropriate sense. As an application, we prove that any relatively hyperbolic group with equationally noetherian peripheral subgroups is itself equationally noetherian.
We prove that infinitely presented graphical $Gr(7)$ small cancellation groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. In particular, infinitely presented classical $C(7)$-groups and, hence, classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. We also prove the analogous statements for the larger class of graphical small cancellation presentations over free products. We construct infinitely presented classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups that provide new examples of divergence functions of groups.
Let $G$ be an acylindrically hyperbolic group and $E$ an exponential equation over $G$. We show that if $E$ is solvable in $G$, then there exists a solution whose components, corresponding to loxodromic elements, can be linearly estimated in terms of lengths of the coefficients of $E$. We give a more precise answer in the case where $G$ is a relatively hyperbolic group. Under some assumption of general character, the solvability and the search problems for exponential equations over $G$ can be reduced to the peripheral subgroups of $G$.
We introduce a new invariant of finitely generated groups, the ambiguity function, and prove that every finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group has a linearly bounded ambiguity function. We use this result to prove that the relative exponential growth rate $\lim \limits_{n \rightarrow \infty} \sqrt[n]{\vert B^{X}_H(n) \vert}$ of a subgroup $H$ of an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$ exists with respect to every finite generating set $X$ of $G$, if $H$ contains a loxodromic element of $G$. Further we prove that the relative exponential growth rate of every finitely generated subgro…
We give sufficient conditions for a group acting on a geodesic metric space to be acylindrically hyperbolic and mention various applications to groups acting on CAT($0$) spaces. We prove that a group acting on an irreducible non-spherical non-affine building is acylindrically hyperbolic provided there is a chamber with finite stabiliser whose orbit contains an apartment. Finally, we show that the following classes of groups admit an action on a building with those properties: orthogonal forms of Kac--Moody groups over arbitrary fields, and irreducible graph products of arbitrary groups - recov…
In this paper we show the statement in the title. To any Garside group of finite type, Wiest and the author associated a hyperbolic graph called the \emph{additional length graph} and they used it to show that central quotients of Artin-Tits groups of spherical type are acylindrically hyperbolic. In general, a euclidean Artin-Tits group is not \emph{a priori} a Garside group but McCammond and Sulway have shown that it embeds into an \emph{infinite-type} Garside group which they call a \emph{crystallographic Garside group}. We associate a \emph{hyperbolic} additional length graph to this crysta…
We give a criterion to prove that some groups are not acylindrically hyperbolic. As an application, we prove that the mapping class group of an infinite type surface is not acylindrically hyperbolic.
Rivin conjectured that the conjugacy growth series of a hyperbolic group is rational if and only if the group is virtually cyclic. Ciobanu, Hermiller, Holt and Rees proved that the conjugacy growth series of a virtually cyclic group is rational. Here we present the proof confirming the other direction of the conjecture, by showing that the conjugacy growth series of a non-elementary hyperbolic group is transcendental. We also present and prove some variations of Rivin's conjecture for commensurability classes and primitive conjugacy classes. We then explore Rivin's conjecture for finitely gene…
Let $G$ be a group acting acylindrically on a hyperbolic space and let $E$ be an exponential equation over $G$. We show that $E$ is equivalent to a finite disjunction of finite systems of pairwise independent equations which are either loxodromic over virtually cyclic subgroups or elliptic. We also obtain a description of the solution set of $E$. We obtain stronger results in the case where $G$ is hyperbolic relative to a collection of peripheral subgroups $\{H_λ\}_{λ\in Λ}$. In particular, we prove in this case that the solution sets of exponential equations over $G$ are $\mathbb{Z}$-semiline…
Let $H$ be an acylindrically hyperbolic group without nontrivial finite normal subgroups. We show that any finite system $S$ of equations with constants from $H$ is equivalent to a single equation. We also show that the algebraic set associated with $S$ is, up to conjugacy, a projection of the algebraic set associated with a single splitted equation (such equation has the form $w(x_1,\dots,x_n)=h$, where $w\in F(X)$, $h\in H$). From this we deduce the following statement: Let $G$ be an arbitrary overgroup of the above group $H$. Then $H$ is verbally closed in $G$ if and only if it is algebraic…
We prove that every countable family of countable acylindrically hyperbolic groups has a common finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic quotient. As an application, we obtain an acylindrically hyperbolic group $Q$ with strong fixed point properties: $Q$ has property $FL^p$ for all $p\in [1, +\infty)$, and every action of $Q$ on a finite dimensional contractible topological space has a fixed point. In addition, $Q$ has other properties which are rather unusual for groups exhibiting "hyperbolic-like" behaviour. E.g., $Q$ is not uniformly non-amenable and has finite generating sets with arbi…
A group G is acylindrically hyperbolic if it admits a non-elementary acylindrical action on a hyperbolic space. We prove that every acylindrically hyperbolic group G has a generating set X such that the corresponding Cayley graph is a (non-elementary) quasi-tree and the action of G on the Cayley graph is acylindrical. Our proof utilizes the notions of hyperbolically embedded subgroups and projection complexes. As a by-product, we obtain some new results about hyperbolically embedded subgroups and quasi-convex subgroups of acylindrically hyperbolic groups.
Let $G$ be an acylindrically hyperbolic group. We prove that if $G$ has no non-trivial finite normal subgroups, then the set of invertible elements is dense in the reduced $C^\ast$-algebra of $G$. The same result is obtained for finite direct products of acylindrically hyperbolic groups.
Building on work from Sun and Kechris-Quorning, we prove that every acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$ admits a weakly mixing probability measure preserving action $G \curvearrowright (X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ which is faithful but not essentially free. In other words, $G$ admits a weakly mixing nontrivial faithful IRS. We also prove that every non-elementary hyperbolic group admits a characteristic random subgroup with the same properties.
We generalise Merzlyakov's theorem about the first-order theory of non-abelian free groups to all acylindrically hyperbolic groups. As a corollary, we deduce that if $G$ is an acylindrically hyperbolic group and $E(G)$ denotes the unique maximal finite normal subgroup of $G$, then $G$ and the HNN extension $G\dot{\ast}_{E(G)}$, which is simply the free product $G\ast\mathbb{Z}$ when $E(G)$ is trivial, have the same $\forall\exists$-theory. As a consequence, we prove the following conjecture, formulated by Casals-Ruiz, Garreta and de la Nuez González: acylindrically hyperbolic groups have trivi…
In this paper, we show that, if a group $G$ acts geometrically on a geodesically complete CAT(0) space $X$ which contains at least one point with a CAT(-1) neighborhood, then $G$ must be either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. As a consequence, the fundamental group of a compact Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is nonpositive everywhere and negative in at least one point is either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. This statement provides a precise interpretation of an idea expressed by Gromov in his paper Asymptotic invariants of infinite groups.
Let G be an acylindrically hyperbolic group. We consider a random subgroup H in G, generated by a finite collection of independent random walks. We show that, with asymptotic probability one, such a random subgroup H of G is a free group, and the semidirect product of H acting on E(G) is hyperbolically embedded in G, where E(G) is the unique maximal finite normal subgroup of G.
We describe solutions of the equation $x^ny^m=a^nb^m$ in acylindrically hyperbolic groups (AH-groups), where $a,b$ are non-commensurable special loxodromic elements and $n,m$ are integers with sufficiently large common divisor. Using this description and certain test words in AH-groups, we study the verbal closedness of AH-subgroups in groups. A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is called verbally closed if for any word $w(x_1,\dots, x_n)$ in variables $x_1,\dots,x_n$ and any element $h\in H$, the equation $w(x_1,\dots, x_n)=h$ has a solution in $G$ if and only if it has a solution in $H$. Main Theo…
We prove that the outer automorphism group $Out(G)$ is residually finite when the group $G$ is virtually compact special (in the sense of Haglund and Wise) or when $G$ is isomorphic to the fundamental group of some compact $3$-manifold. To prove these results we characterize commensurating endomorphisms of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. An endomorphism $ϕ$ of a group $G$ is said to be commensurating, if for every $g \in G$ some non-zero power of $ϕ(g)$ is conjugate to a non-zero power of $g$. Given an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$, we show that any commensurating endomorphism of $G$ i…

We construct combinatorial volume forms of hyperbolic three manifolds fibering over the circle. These forms define non-trivial classes in bounded cohomology. After introducing a new seminorm on exact bounded cohomology, we use these combinatorial classes to show that, in degree 3, the zero norm subspace of the bounded cohomology of an acylindrically hyperbolic group is infinite dimensional. In the appendix we use the same techniques to give a cohomological proof of a lower bound, originally due to Brock, on the volume of the mapping torus of a cobounded pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a closed …
We prove that every acylindrically hyperbolic group that has no non-trivial finite normal subgroup satisfies a strong ping pong property, the $P_{naive}$ property: for any finite collection of elements $h_1, \dots, h_k$, there exists another element $γ\neq 1$ such that for all $i$, $\langle h_i, γ\rangle = \langle h_i \rangle* \langle γ\rangle$. We also obtain that if a collection of subgroups $H_1, \dots, H_k$ is a hyperbolically embedded collection, then there is $γ\neq 1$ such that for all $i$, $\langle H_i, γ\rangle = H_i * \langle γ\rangle$.
We prove that the automorphism group of every infinitely-ended finitely generated group is acylindrically hyperbolic. In particular $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{F}_n)$ is acylindrically hyperbolic for every $n\ge 2$. More generally, if $G$ is a group which is not virtually cyclic, and hyperbolic relative to a finite collection $\mathcal{P}$ of finitely generated proper subgroups, then $\mathrm{Aut}(G,\mathcal{P})$ is acylindrically hyperbolic. As a consequence, a free-by-cyclic group $\mathbb{F}_n\rtimes_φ\mathbb{Z}$ is acylindrically hyperbolic if and only if $φ$ has infinite order in $\mathrm{Out}(…
The question which motivates the article is the following: given a group acting on a CAT(0) cube complex, how can we prove that it is acylindrically hyperbolic? Keeping this goal in mind, we show a weak acylindricity of the action on the contact graph associated to a CAT(0) cube complex, and we prove a characterisation of WPD contracting isometries of CAT(0) cube complexes. As a first consequence, we find alternative arguments to show several criteria which were proved by Indira Chatterji and Alexandre Martin. Next, we show that if a group acts essentially and acylindrically on the hyperplanes…
Let $G$ be a finitely presented group, and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. We prove that if $H$ is acylindrically hyperbolic and existentially closed in $G$, then $G$ is acylindrically hyperbolic. As a corollary, any finitely presented group which is existentially equivalent to the mapping class group of a surface of finite type, to $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ or $\mathrm{Aut}(F_n)$ for $n\geq 2$ or to the Higman group, is acylindrically hyperbolic.
We abstract the notion of an A/QI triple from a number of examples in geometric group theory. Such a triple (G,X,H) consists of a group G acting on a Gromov hyperbolic space X, acylindrically along a finitely generated subgroup H which is quasi-isometrically embedded by the action. Examples include strongly quasi-convex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups, convex cocompact subgroups of mapping class groups, many known convex cocompact subgroups of Out(Fn), and groups generated by powers of independent loxodromic WPD elements of a group acting on a Gromov hyperbolic space. We initiate the…
We prove that every homomorphism from the elementary Chevalley group over a finitely generated unital commutative ring associated with reduced irreducible classical root system of rank at least 2, and ME analogues of such groups, into acylindrically hyperbolic groups has an absolutely elliptic image. This result provides a non-arithmetic generalization of homomorphism superrigidity of Farb--Kaimanovich--Masur and Bridson--Wade.
We study random walks on groups with the feature that, roughly speaking, successive positions of the walk tend to be "aligned". We formalize and quantify this property by means of the notion of deviation inequalities. We show that deviation inequalities have several consequences including Central Limit Theorems, the local Lipschitz continuity of the rate of escape and entropy, as well as linear upper and lower bounds on the variance of the distance of the position of the walk from its initial point. In a second part of the paper, we show that the (exponential) deviation inequality holds for me…
It is known that every infinite index quasi-convex subgroup $H$ of a non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ is a free factor in a larger quasi-convex subgroup of $G$. We give a probabilistic generalization of this result. That is, we show that when $R$ is a subgroup generated by independent random walks in $G$, then $\langle H, R\rangle\cong H\ast R$ with probability going to one as the lengths of the random walks go to infinity and this subgroup is quasi-convex in $G$. Moreover, our results hold for a large class of groups acting on hyperbolic metric spaces and subgroups with quasi-convex orbits…
In this article, we show that some negative curvature may survive when taking the automorphism group of a finitely generated group. More precisely, we prove that the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(G)$ of a one-ended hyperbolic group $G$ turns out to be acylindrically hyperbolic. As a consequence, given a group $H$ and a morphism $φ: H \to \mathrm{Aut}(G)$, we deduce that the semidirect product $G \rtimes_φH$ is acylindrically hyperbolic if and only if $\mathrm{ker}(H \oversetφ{\to} \mathrm{Aut}(G) \to \mathrm{Out}(G))$ is finite.
In this article, we initiate a geometric study of graph braid groups. More precisely, by applying the formalism of special colorings introduced in a previous article, we determine precisely when a graph braid group is Gromov-hyperbolic, toral relatively hyperbolic, and acylindrically hyperbolic.
Generalising results of Razborov and Safin, and answering a question of Button, we prove that for every hyperbolic group there exists a constant $α>0$ such that for every finite subset $U$ that is not contained in a virtually cyclic subgroup $|U^n|\geqslant (α|U|)^{[(n+1)/2]}$. Similar estimates are established for groups acting acylindrically on trees or hyperbolic spaces.
We prove that the group of outer automorphisms of the free Coxeter group $W_n$ is acylindrically hyperbolic in the sense of Osin. As an application, we observe that any CAT(0) space admitting a geometric action by Out($W_n$) must contain a rank-one geodesic. The theorem proceeds from expanding on a well-known relationship between Out($W_n$) and the outer automorphism group of free groups.
