A reconstruction theorem for genus 0 gravitational quantum cohomology and quantum K-theory is proved. A new linear equivalence in the Picard group of the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps relating the pull-backs of line bundles from the target via different markings is used for the reconstruction result. Examples of calculations in quantum cohomology and quantum K-theory are given.
We present a reconstruction theorem for Fano vector bundles on projective space which recovers the small quantum cohomology for the projectivisation of the bundle from a small number of low-degree Gromov--Witten invariants. We provide an extended example in which we calculate the quantum cohomology of a certain Fano 9-fold and deduce from this, using the quantum Lefschetz theorem, the quantum period sequence for a Fano 3-fold of Picard rank 2 and degree 24. This example is new, and is important for the Fanosearch programme.
Cohomological genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants of a given target space can be encoded by the "descendant potential," a generating function defined on the space of power series in one variable with coefficients in the cohomology space of the target. Replacing the coefficient space with the subspace multiplicatively generated by degree-2 classes, we explicitly reconstruct the graph of the differential of the restricted generating function from one point on it. Using the Quantum Hirzebruch--Riemann--Roch Theorem from our joint work with Valentin Tonita, we derive a similar reconstruction formula …
In this short paper, we use Tannakian reconstruction techniques to prove a result that explains how to reconstruct the stacky approach to de Rham cohomology from the classical theory algebraic de Rham cohomology via an application of the adjoint functor theorem.
We explicitly describe cohomology of the sheaf of differential forms with poles along a semiample divisor on a complete simplicial toric variety. As an application, we obtain a new vanishing theorem which is an analogue of the Bott-Steenbrink-Danilov vanishing theorem.
We prove some base change theorems for coherent cohomology in the setting of Berkovich spaces. In this setting, we get a flat base change theorem, and some proper base change theorems that are analogue to theorems from scheme theory.
We use the toric degeneration of Bott-Samelson varieties and the description of cohomolgy of line bundles on toric varieties to deduce vanishings results for the cohomology of lines bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties.
We show that a cone theorem for ${\mathbbA}^1-homotopy invariant contravariant functors implies the vanishing of the positive degree part of the operational Chow cohomology rings of a large class of affine varieties. We also discuss how this vanishing relates to a number of questions about representing Chow cohomology classes of GIT quotients in terms of equivariant cycles.
We develop a formalism involving Atiyah classes of sheaves on a smooth manifold, Hochschild chain and cochain complexes. As an application we prove a version of the Riemann--Roch theorem.
Using morphic cohomology, we produce a sequence of conjectures, called morphic conjectures, which terminates at the Grothendieck standard conjecture A. A refinement of Hodge structures is given, and with the assumption of morphic conjectures, we prove a Hodge index theorem. We answer a question of Friedlander and Lawson by assuming the Grothendieck standard conjecture B and prove that the topological filtration from morphic cohomology is equal to the Grothendieck arithmetic filtration for some cases.
This paper applies the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology to geometric invariant theory quotients, relating the intersection cohomology of the quotient to that of the semistable points for the action. Suppose a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective variety $X$. We prove that if $1 \to N \to G \to H \to 1$ is a short exact sequence of connected reductive groups, and $X^{ss}$ the set of semistable points for the action of $N$ on $X$, then the $H$-equivariant intersection cohomology of the geometric invariant theory quotient $X^{ss}//N…
We show that a normalized rank two vector bundle, E, on P2 splits if and only if h1(E(-1)) = 0. Using this fact we give another proof of a theorem of Chiantini and Valabrega. Finally we describe the normalized bundles with h1(E(-1)) <= 4.
We prove that the $0$-th local cohomology of the jacobian ring of a projective hypersurface with isolated singularities has a nice interpretation it in the context of linkage theory. Roughly speaking, it represents a measure of the failure of Gherardelli's theorem for the corresponding graded modules. This leads us to a different and characteristic free proof of its self-duality, which turns out to be an easy consequence of Grothendieck's local duality theorem.
In this paper, we show that the motive of the quaternionic Grassmannian $HP^n$ (as defined by I. Panin and C. Walter) splits in the category of effective MW-motives (as defined by B. Calmès, F. Déglise and J. Fasel). Moreover, we extend this result to an arbitrary symplectic bundle, obtaining the so-called quaternionic projective bundle theorem. Finally, we give the Gysin triangle in MW-motivic cohomology.
We generalize the First Reconstruction Theorem of Kontsevich and Manin in two respects. First, we allow the target space to be a Deligne-Mumford stack. Second, under some convergence assumptions, we show it suffices to check the hypothesis of $H^2$-generation not on the cohomology ring, but on an any quantum ring in the family given by small quantum cohomology.
We describe the standard and Leray filtrations on the cohomology groups with compact supports of a quasi projective variety with coefficients in a constructible complex using flags of hyperplane sections on a partial compactification of a related variety. One of the key ingredients of the proof is the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for perverse sheaves and, in an appendix, we discuss the base change maps for constructible sheaves on algebraic varieties and their role in a proof, due to Beilinson, of the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem.
Let X be a smooth complex algebraic variety with the Zariski topology, and let Y be the underlying complex manifold with the complex topology. Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham theorem asserts that the singular cohomology of Y with complex coefficients can be computed from the complex of sheaves of algebraic differential forms on X. This article gives an elementary proof of Grothendieck's algebraic de Rham theorem, elementary in the sense that we use only tools from standard textbooks as well as Serre's FAC and GAGA papers.
The perverse filtration in cohomology and in cohomology with compact supports is interpreted in terms of kernels of restrictions maps to suitable subvarieties by using the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem and spectral objects. Various mixed-Hodge-theoretic consequences for intersection cohomology and for the decomposition theorem are derived.
The characteristic cycle of a complex of sheaves on a complex analytic space provides weak information about the complex; essentially, it yields the Euler characteristics of the hypercohomology of normal data to strata. We show how perverse cohomology actually allows one to extract the individual Betti numbers of the hypercohomology of normal data to strata, not merely the Euler characteristics. We apply this to the ``calculation'' of the vanishing cycles of a complex, and relate this to the work of Parusiński and Briançon, Maisonobe, and Merle on Thom's $a_f$ condition.
The main purpose of this paper is to generalize the celebrated L${}^2$ extension theorem of Ohsawa-Takegoshi in several directions : the holomorphic sections to extend are taken in a possibly singular hermitian line bundle, the subvariety from which the extension is performed may be non reduced, the ambient manifold is K{ä}hler and holomorphically convex, but not necessarily compact.
Suslin proved that for an extension K/k of algebraically closed fields the induced maps K_m(k)[n] --> K_m(K)[n] and K_m(k)/n ---> K_m(K)/n for the higher K-groups are isomorphisms, where A[n] is the subgroup of n-torsion in an abelien group, and A/n = A/nA, by definition. In this paper we generalize this to other functors and other field extensions.
The paper is dedicated to the study of algebraic manifolds whose quantum cohomology or a part of it is a semisimple Frobenius manifold. Theorem 1.8.1 says, roughly speaking, that the sum of $(p,p)$--cohomology spaces is a maximal Frobenius submanifold that has chances to be semisimple. Theorem 1.8.3 provides a version of the Reconstruction theorem, assuming semisimplicity but not $H^2$--generation. Theorem 3.6.1 establishes the semisimplicity for all del Pezzo surfaces, providing an evidence for the conjecture that semisimplicity is related to the existence of a full system of exceptional shea…
We study cohomology support loci of regular holonomic D-modules on complex abelian varieties, and obtain conditions under which each irreducible component of such a locus contains a torsion point. One case is that both the D-module and the corresponding perverse sheaf are defined over a number field; another case is that the D-module underlies a grade-polarizable mixed Hodge module with a Z-structure. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof for Simpson's result that Green-Lazarsfeld sets are translates of subtori by torsion points.
We give elementary proofs of the main theorems about (small) quantum cohomology of Grassmannians, including the quantum Giambelli and quantum Pieri formulas, the rim-hook algorithm, Siebert and Tian's presentation, and a recent theorem of Fulton and Woodward about the minimal q-power which appears in a product of two Schubert classes.
The Jacobian ring J(X) of a smooth hypersurface determines its isomorphism type. This has been used by Donagi and others to prove the generic global Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces in many cases. In Voisin's original proof of the global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic fourfolds the Jacobian ring does not intervene. In this paper we present a proof of the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds that relies on the Jacobian ring and the (derived) global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces. It emphasizes, once again, the relation between K3 surfaces and smooth cubic fourfolds. More generally, fo…
We consider a complete nonsingular variety $X$ over $\bC$, having a normal crossing divisor $D$ such that the associated logarithmic tangent bundle is generated by its global sections. We show that $H^i\big(X, L^{-1} \otimes Ω_X^j(\log D)\big) = 0$ for any nef line bundle $L$ on $X$ and all $i < j - c$, where $c$ is an explicit function of $(X,D,L)$. This implies e.g. the vanishing of $H^i(X, L \otimes Ω_X^j)$ for $L$ ample and $i > j$, and gives back a vanishing theorem of Broer when $X$ is a flag variety.
In this note we extend some of the results of a previous paper \url{arXiv:math/0511593} to algebraically closed fields of finite characteristic. In particular, we show that there is an explicit expression in $n$ and $d$ which is divisible by the prime to $p$ part of the order of the the automorphism group of a smooth degree $d$ hypersurface $\subset \mathbb{P}^n_k$ for $k$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$.
We prove a duality theorem for graded algebras over a field that implies several known duality results : graded local duality, versions of Serre duality for local cohomology and of Suzuki duality for generalized local cohomology, and Herzog-Rahimi bigraded duality.
Given a projective morphism of compact, complex, algebraic varieties and a relatively ample line bundle on the domain we prove that a suitable choice, dictated by the line bundle, of the decomposition isomorphism of the Decomposition Theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein, Deligne and Gabber, yields isomorphisms of pure Hodge structures. The proof is based on a new cohomological characterization of the decomposition isomorphism associated with the line bundle. We prove some corollaries concerning the intersection form in intersection cohomology, the natural map from cohomology to intersection cohomol…
In this article, we prove a comparison theorem between the Dwork cohomology introduced by Adolphson and Sperber and the rigid cohomology. As a corollary, we can calculate the rigid cohomology of Dwork isocrystal on torus.
The Hard Lefschetz theorem for intersection cohomology of nonrational polytopes was recently proved by K. Karu [Ka]. This theorem implies the conjecture of R. Stanley on the unimodularity of the generalized $h$-vector. In this paper we strengthen Karu's theorem by introducing a canonical bilinear form $(\cdot ,\cdot)_Φ$ on the intersection cohomology $IH(Φ)$ of a complete fan $Φ$ and proving the Hodge-Riemann bilinear relations for $(\cdot ,\cdot)_Φ$.
We give a short, geometric proof of Graham's theorem on positivity in the equivariant cohomology of a flag variety, based on a transversality argument.
Given a very ample line bundle on a smooth projective variety, the variation of Hodge structure associated to the universal family of hyperplane sections can be thought of as a $D$-module with action generated by the Gauss-Manin connection. The decomposition theorem for a projective morphism and results similar to the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem tell us that the only nontrivial part of this VHS occurs in the middle degree corresponding to the vanishing cohomology of the hyperplane sections. We use Nori's connectivity theorem to give an explicit description of the cohomology sheaves of the de …
Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p > 0$, $W_n = W_n(k)$. For separated $k$-schemes of finite type, we explain how rigid cohomology with compact supports can be computed as the cohomology of certain de Rham-Witt complexes with coefficients. This result generalizes the classical comparison theorem of Bloch-Illusie for proper and smooth schemes. In the proof, the key step is an extension of the Bloch-Illusie theorem to the case of cohomologies relative to $W_n$ with coefficients in a crystal that is only supposed to be flat over $W_n$.
Using local cohomology and algebraic D-Modules, we generalize a comparison theorem between relative de Rham cohomology and Dwork cohomology due to N. Katz, A. Adolphson and S. Sperber.
We establish duality results for the cohomology of the Weil group of a $p$-adic field, analogous to, but more general than, results from Galois cohomology. We prove a duality theorem for discrete Weil modules, which implies Tate-Nakayama Duality. We define Weil-smooth cohomology for varieties over local fields, and prove a duality theorem for the cohomology of $\G_m$ on a smooth, proper curve with a rational point. This last theorem is analogous to, and implies, a classical duality theorem for such curves.
An 1861 theorem of Hermite asserts that for every field extension $E/F$ of degree $5$ there exists an element of $E$ whose minimal polynomial over $F$ is of the form $f(x) = x^5 + c_2 x^3 + c_4 x + c_5$ for some $c_2, c_4, c_5 \in F$. We give a new proof of this theorem using techniques of Galois cohomology, under a mild assumption on $F$.
Let f be a degeneration of Kahler manifolds. The local invariant cycle theorem states that for a smooth fiber of the degeneration, any cohomology class, invariant under the monodromy action, rises from a global cohomology class. Instead of the classical cohomology, one may consider the non-abelian cohomology. This note demonstrates that the analogous non-abelian version of the local invariant cycle theorem does not hold if the first non-abelian cohomology is the moduli space (universal categorical quotient) of the representations of the fundamental group.
We prove that for a finitely generated field over an infinite perfect field k, and for any integer n, the (n,n)-th MW-motivic cohomology group identifies with the n-th Milnor-Witt K-theory group of that field
We prove a theorem of Leray-Hirsch type and give an explicit blow-up formula for Dolbeault cohomology on (\emph{not necessarily compact}) complex manifolds. We give applications to strongly $q$-complete manifolds and the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma.
We prove equivariant versions of the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum conjecture for Bredon motivic cohomology of smooth complex and real varieties with an action of the group of order two. This identifies equivariant motivic and topological invariants in a large range of degrees.
This is the integral text of my thesis. The first part is an expanded version of "Riemann-Roch theorems for Deligne-Mumford stacks", where I deal with Artin stacks over general bases. In the second part, I prove some Riemann-Roch statment for D-modules on Deligne-Mumford stacks, and I also consider the problem of algebraization of analytic stacks.
We reformulate the construction of Kontsevich's completion and use Lawson homology to define many new motivic invariants. We show that the dimensions of subspaces generated by algebraic cycles of the cohomology groups of two $K$-equivalent varieties are the same, which implies that several conjectures of algebraic cycles are $K$-statements. We define stringy functions which enable us to ask stringy Grothendieck standard conjecture and stringy Hodge conjecture. We prove a projective bundle theorem in morphic cohomology for trivial bundles over any normal quasi-projective varieties.
In this paper, we study relations between positivity of the curvature and the asymptotic behavior of the higher cohomology group for tensor powers of a holomorphic line bundle. The Andreotti-Grauert vanishing theorem asserts that partial positivity of the curvature implies asymptotic vanishing of certain higher cohomology groups. We investigate the converse implication of this theorem under various situations. For example, we consider the case where a line bundle is semi-ample or big. Moreover, we show the converse implication holds on a projective surface without any assumptions on a line bun…
In this paper, we formulate axioms of certain graded cohomology theory for which Chern class maps from higher K-theory are defined, following the method of Gillet [Gi1]. We will not include homotopy invariance nor purity in our axioms. It will turn out that the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Riemann-Roch theorem without denominators hold for our higher Chern classes. We will also give two applications of our Riemann-Roch results.
In this expository paper, we give a complete proof of van den Essen's theorem that the de Rham cohomology spaces of a holonomic D-module are finite-dimensional in the case of a formal power series ring over a field of characteristic zero. This proof requires results from at least five of van den Essen's papers as well as his unpublished thesis, and until now has not been available in a self-contained document.
Using $L^2$-methods, we prove a vanishing theorem for tame harmonic bundles over quasi-compact Kähler manifolds in a very general setting. As a special case, we give a completely new proof of the Kodaira type vanishing theorems for Higgs bundles due to Arapura. To prove our vanishing theorem, we construct a fine resolution of the Dolbeault complex for tame harmonic bundles via the complex of sheaves of $L^2$-forms, and we establish the Hörmander $L^2$-estimate and solve $(\bar{\partial}_E+θ)$-equations for Higgs bundles $(E,θ)$.
We show that the mod $p$ cohomology of a simple Shimura variety treated in Harris-Taylor's book vanishes outside a certain nontrivial range after localizing at any non-Eisenstein ideal of the Hecke algebra. In cases of low dimensions, we show the vanishing outside the middle degree.
We describe interdependencies among the quantum cohomology associativity relations. We strengthen the first reconstruction theorem of Kontsevich and Manin by identifying a subcollection of the associativity relations which implies the full system of WDVV equations. This provides a tool for identifying non-geometric solutions to WDVV.
The Hard Lefschetz theorem is known to hold for the intersection cohomology of the toric variety associated to a rational convex polytope. One can construct the intersection cohomology combinatorially from the polytope, hence it is well defined even for nonrational polytopes when there is no variety associated to it. We prove the Hard Lefschetz theorem for the intersection cohomology of a general polytope.
We provide a complete proof of a duality theorem for the fppf cohomology of either a curve over a finite field or a ring of integers of a number field, which extends the classical Artin-Verdier Theorem in étale cohomology. We also prove some finiteness and vanishing statements.
