The paper is dedicated to the study of algebraic manifolds whose quantum cohomology or a part of it is a semisimple Frobenius manifold. Theorem 1.8.1 says, roughly speaking, that the sum of $(p,p)$--cohomology spaces is a maximal Frobenius submanifold that has chances to be semisimple. Theorem 1.8.3 provides a version of the Reconstruction theorem, assuming semisimplicity but not $H^2$--generation. Theorem 3.6.1 establishes the semisimplicity for all del Pezzo surfaces, providing an evidence for the conjecture that semisimplicity is related to the existence of a full system of exceptional sheaves of the appropriate length. Finally, in §2 we calculate special coordinates for three families of Fano threefolds with minimal cohomology.
We give sufficient conditions for the semisimplicity of quantum cohomology of Fano varieties of Picard rank 1. We apply these techniques to prove new semisimplicity results for some Fano varieties of Picard rank 1 and large index. We also give examples of Fano varieties having a non semisimple small quantum cohomology but a semisimple big quantum cohomology.
We construct a semi-stable formal model of a wide open rigid curve with a semi-stable covering, and study the l-adic cohomology of the rigid curve. We describe the l-adic cohomology of the rigid curve using the l-adic cohomology of the irreducible components of a semi-stable reduction, and homology and cohomology of some graphs. We also prove the functoriality of the description for a finite flat morphism that is compatible with semi-stable coverings of wide open rigid curves.
We introduce the semi-infinite category of sheaves on the affine Grassmannian, and construct a particular object in it, which we call the the semi-infinite intersection cohomology sheaf. We relate it to several other entities naturally appearing in the geometric Langlands theory.
For a $\mathbb P^1$-orbifold $\mathscr C$, we prove that its big quantum cohomology is generically semisimple. As a corollary, we verify a conjecture of Dubrovin for orbi-curves. We also show that the small quantum cohomology of $\mathscr C$ is generically semisimple iff $\mathscr C$ is Fano, i.e. it has positive orbifold Euler characteristic.
We describe representations of certain superconformal algebras in the semi-infinite Weil complex related to the loop algebra of a complex finite-dimensional Lie algebra and in the semi-infinite cohomology. We show that in the case where the Lie algebra is endowed with a non-degenerate invariant symmetric bilinear form, the relative semi-infinite cohomology of the loop algebra has a structure, which is analogous to the classical structure of the de Rham cohomology in Kähler geometry.
We prove that the quantum cohomology ring of any minuscule or cominuscule homogeneous space, specialized at q=1, is semisimple. This implies that complex conjugation defines an algebra automorphism of the quantum cohomology ring localized at the quantum parameter. We check that this involution coincides with the strange duality defined in a previous paper. We deduce Vafa-Intriligator type formulas for the Gromov-Witten invariants.
This paper is a sequel to [Ga1]. We study the semi-infinite category on the Ran version of the affine Grassmannian, and study a particular object in it that we call the semi-infinite intersection cohomology sheaf. Unlike the situation of [Ga1], this version of the semi-infinite intersection IC sheaf is defined as the middle of extension of the constant (more precisely, dualizing) sheaf on the basic stratum, in a certain t-structure. We give several explicit description and characterizations of our semi-infinite intersection IC sheaf: we describe its !- and *- stalks; we present it explicitly a…
We constructed the analytic Milnor fiber is a non-archimedean model of the classical topological Milnor fibration. In the present paper, we describe the homotopy type of the analytic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model, and we show that its singular cohomology coincides with the weight zero part of the mixed Hodge structure on the nearby cohomology. We give a similar expression for Denef and Loeser's motivic Milnor fiber in terms of a strictly semi-stable model.
We show that Shipley's "detection functor" for symmetric spectra generalizes to motivic symmetric spectra. As an application, we construct motivic strict ring spectra representing morphic cohomology, semi-topological $K$-theory, and semi-topological cobordism for complex varieties. As a further application to semi-topological cobordism, we show that it is related to semi-topological $K$-theory via a Conner-Floyd type isomorphism and that after inverting a lift of the Friedlander-Mazur $s$-element in morphic cohomology, semi-topological cobordism becomes isomorphic to periodic complex cobordism…
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties admit actions of associated Weyl groups on their cohomology space of each degree. In this paper, we consider the module structure of the cohomology spaces of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties of type $A$. We define a subset of the Bialynicki-Birula basis of the cohomology space so that they become a module generator set of the cohomology module of each degree. We then use those generators to construct permutation submodules of the degree two cohomology module and show that they form a permutation module decomposition. Our construction is consistent…
In this short note, we study the semi-simplicity of the quantum cohomology algebra H(V, C) of a Fano complete intersection V, and show that the subspace of H(V, C) generated by the hyperplane sections is semi-simple in the sense of Dubrovin when the degree of V satisfies certain conditions.
This paper applies the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology to geometric invariant theory quotients, relating the intersection cohomology of the quotient to that of the semistable points for the action. Suppose a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective variety $X$. We prove that if $1 \to N \to G \to H \to 1$ is a short exact sequence of connected reductive groups, and $X^{ss}$ the set of semistable points for the action of $N$ on $X$, then the $H$-equivariant intersection cohomology of the geometric invariant theory quotient $X^{ss}//N…
Using results of Gathmann, we prove the following theorem: If a smooth projective variety X has generically semisimple (p,p)-quantum cohomology, then the same is true for the blow-up of X at any number of points. This a successful test for a modified version of Dubrovin's conjecture from the ICM 1998.

We compute the cohomology of polygon spaces using their identification to (semi) stable configuration of weighted points on complex projective line. This cohomology is already given by J.C.Hausmann and A. Knutson but we use a different approach. We also give a condition for being Fano.
We introduce here a method which uses etale neighborhoods to extend results from smooth semi-local rings to arbitrary semi-local rings A by passing to the henselization of a smooth presentation of A. The technique is used to show that etale cohomology of A agrees with Galois cohomology, the Merkuriev-Suslin theorem holds for A, and to describe torsion in K_2(A).
We explicitly describe cohomology of the sheaf of differential forms with poles along a semiample divisor on a complete simplicial toric variety. As an application, we obtain a new vanishing theorem which is an analogue of the Bott-Steenbrink-Danilov vanishing theorem.
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero complete for a discrete valuation, with perfect residue field of characteristic $p>0$, and let $K^+$ be the valuation ring of $K$. We relate the log-crystalline cohomology of the special fibre of certain affine $K^+$-schemes $X=\text{Spec}(R)$ with semi-stable reduction to the Galois cohomology of the fundamental group of the geometric generic fibre $π_1(X_{\bar{K}})$ with coefficients in a Fontaine ring constructed from $R$. This is based on Faltings' theory of almost étale extensions.
We establish an Atiyah-Hirzebruch type spectral sequence relating real morphic cohomology and real semi-topological K-theory and prove it to be compatible with the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence relating Bredon cohomology and Atiyah's KR-theory constructed by Dugger. An equivariant and a real version of Suslin's conjecture on morphic cohomology are formulated, proved to come from the complex version of Suslin conjecture and verified for certain real varieties. In conjunction with the spectral sequences constructed here this allows the computation of the real semi-topological K-theory of s…
We describe the second cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety by generators and relations explicitly in terms of GKM theory. The cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety becomes a module of a symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ by the dot action introduced by Tymoczko. As an application of our explicit description, we give a formula describing the isomorphism class of the second cohomology as an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module. Our formula is not exactly the same as the known formula by Chow or Cho-Hong-Lee but they are equivalent. We also discuss its higher degree generalizat…

In this article we prove a semistable version of the variational Tate conjecture for divisors in crystalline cohomology, stating that a rational (logarithmic) line bundle on the special fibre of a semistable scheme over $k [\![ t ]\!]$ lifts to the total space if and only if its first Chern class does. The proof is elementary, using standard properties of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt complex. As a corollary, we deduce similar algebraicity lifting results for cohomology classes on varieties over global function fields. Finally, we give a counter example to show that the variational Tate conject…
For a connected semisimple group G over the field of real numbers R, using a method of Onishchik and Vinberg, we compute the first Galois cohomology set H^1(R,G) in terms of Kac labelings of the affine Dynkin diagram of G.
We investigate the cohomology rings of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties whose Hessenberg functions are of the form $h=(h(1),n\dots,n)$ in Lie type $A_{n-1}$. The main result of this paper gives an explicit presentation of the cohomology rings in terms of generators and their relations. Our presentation naturally specializes to Borel's presentation of the cohomology ring of the flag variety and it is compatible with the representation of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the cohomology constructed by J. Tymoczko. As a corollary, we also give an explicit presentation of the $\mathfr…
We introduce and study a superversion of Dubrovin's notion of semisimple Frobenius manifolds. We establish a correspondence between semisimple Frobenius (super)manifolds and special solutions to the (supersymmetric) Schlesinger equations. Finally, we calculate the Schlesinger initial conditions for solutions describing quantum cohomology of projective spaces.
We show that semi-infinite cohomology of a finite dimensional graded algebra (satisfying some additional requirements) are a particular case of a general categorical construction. The motivating example is provided by small quantum groups at a root of unity.
In this paper, we give a simple formula for the generating function of genus-2 Gromov-Witten invariants for manifolds with semisimple quantum cohomology, and use this formula to prove the genus-2 Virasoro conjecture for such manifolds.
This is a first graduate course in algebraic geometry. It aims to give the student a lift up into the subject at the research level, with lots of interesting topics taken from the classification of surfaces, and a human-oriented discussion of some of the technical foundations, but with no pretence at an exhaustive treatment. The early chapters introduce topics that are useful throughout projective and algebraic geometry, make little demands, and lead to fun calculations. The intermediate chapters introduce elements of the technical language gradually, whereas the later chapters get into the su…
Let G be a connected, compact, semisimple algebraic group over the field of real numbers R. Using Kac diagrams, we describe combinatorially the first Galois cohomology sets H^1(R,H) for all inner forms H of G. As examples, we compute explicitly H^1 for all real forms of the simply connected group of type E_7 (which has been known since 2013) and for all real forms of half-spin groups of type D_{2k} (which seems to be new).
We study categorical primitive forms for Calabi--Yau $A_\infty$ categories with semi-simple Hochschild cohomology. We classify these primitive forms in terms of certain grading operators on the Hochschild homology. We use this result to prove that, if the Fukaya category ${\sf Fuk}(M)$ of a symplectic manifold $M$ has semi-simple Hochschild cohomology, then its genus zero Gromov--Witten invariants may be recovered from the $A_\infty$-category ${\sf Fuk}(M)$ together with the closed-open map. An immediate corollary of this is that in the semi-simple case, homological mirror symmetry implies enu…
In the first section of this note we show that the Theorem 1.8.1 of Bayer--Manin ([BaMa]) can be strengthened in the following way: {\it if the even quantum cohomology of a projective algebraic manifold $V$ is generically semi--simple, then $V$ has no odd cohomology and is of Hodge--Tate type.} In particular, this addressess a question in [Ci]. In the second section, we prove that {\it an analytic (or formal) supermanifold $M$ with a given supercommutative associative $\Cal{O}_M$--bilinear multiplication on its tangent sheaf $\Cal{T}_M$ is an $F$--manifold in the sense of [HeMa], iff its spect…
Let k be a non archimedean field. If X is a k-algebraic variety and U a locally closed semi-algebraic subset of X^{an} -- the Berkovich space associated to X -- we show that for l \neq char(\tilde{k}), the cohomology groups H^i_c (\bar{U}, Q_l) behave like H^i_c(\bar{X}, Q_l), where \bar{U} = U \otimes \hat{\bar{k}}. In particular, they are finite-dimensional vector spaces. This result has been used by E. Hrushovski and F. Loeser. Moreover, we prove analogous finiteness properties concerning rigid semi-analytic subsets of compact Berkovich spaces (resp. adic spaces associated to quasi-compact …
We prove a 1979 conjecture of Lusztig on the cohomology of semi-infinite Deligne--Lusztig varieties attached to division algebras over local fields. We also prove the two conjectures of Boyarchenko on these varieties. It is known that in this setting, the semi-infinite Deligne--Lusztig varieties are ind-schemes comprised of limits of certain finite-type schemes $X_h$. Boyarchenko's two conjectures are on the maximality of $X_h$ and on the behavior of the torus-eigenspaces of their cohomology. Both of these conjectures were known in full generality only for division algebras with Hasse invarian…
We derive constraints on Lagrangian embeddings in completions of certain stable symplectic fillings with semisimple symplectic cohomologies. Manifolds with these properties can be constructed by generalizing the boundary connected sum operation to our setting, and are related to certain birational surgeries like blow-downs and flips. As a consequence, there are many non-toric (non-compact) monotone symplectic manifolds whose wrapped Fukaya categories are proper.
For complex parallelisable manifolds $Γ\backslash G$, with $G$ a solvable or semisimple complex Lie group, the Frölicher spectral sequence degenerates at the second page. In the solvable case, the de-Rham cohomology carries a pure Hodge structure. In contrast, in the semisimple case, purity depends on the lattice, but there is always a direct summand of the de Rham cohomology which does carry a pure Hodge structure and is independent of the lattice.
This paper is devoted to the study of the quantum cohomology of coadjoint varieties of simple algebraic groups across all Dynkin types. We determine the non-semisimple factors of the small quantum cohomology ring and relate them to ADE-singularities. Moreover, we show that the big quantum cohomology of a coadjoint variety is always generically semisimple even though in most cases the small quantum cohomology is not.
Motivated by a 1993 conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge, Shareshian and Wachs conjectured that the characteristic map takes the dot action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety to $ωX_G(t)$, where $X_G(t)$ is the chromatic quasisymmetric function of the incomparability graph $G$ of the corresponding natural unit interval order, and $ω$ is the usual involution on symmetric functions. We prove the Shareshian--Wachs conjecture. Our proof uses the local invariant cycle theorem of Beilinson-Bernstein-Deligne to obtain a surjection from the cohomology o…
Let $\mathrm{R}$ be a real closed field. We prove that for each fixed $\ell, d \geq 0$, there exists an algorithm that takes as input a quantifier-free first order formula $Φ$ with atoms $P=0, P > 0, P < 0 \text{ with } P \in \mathcal{P} \subset \mathrm{D}[X_1,\ldots,X_k]^{\mathfrak{S}_k}_{\leq d}$, where $\mathrm{D}$ is an ordered domain contained in $\mathrm{R}$, and computes the ranks of the first $(\ell+1)$ cohomology groups, of the symmetric semi-algebraic set defined by $Φ$. The complexity of this algorithm (measured by the number of arithmetic operations in $\mathrm{D}$) is bounded by a…
For a simple algebraic group $G$ we study the space $Q$ of Quasimaps from the projective line $C$ to the flag variety of $G$. We prove that the global Intersection Cohomology of $Q$ carries a natural pure Tate Hodge structure, and compute its generating function. We define an action of the Langlands dual Lie algebra $g^L$ on this cohomology. We present a new geometric construction of the universal enveloping algebra $U(n^L_+)$ of the nilpotent subalgebra of $g^L$. It is realized in the Ext-groups of certain perverse sheaves on Quasimaps' spaces, and it is equipped with a canonical basis number…
Recent work of Shareshian and Wachs, Brosnan and Chow, and Guay-Paquet connects the well-known Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in combinatorics to the dot action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology rings $H^*(Hess(S,h))$ of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. In particular, in order to prove the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture, it suffices to construct (for any Hessenberg function $h$) a permutation basis of $H^*(Hess(S,h))$ whose elements have stabilizers isomorphic to Young subgroups. In this manuscript we give several results which contribute toward this goal. Specifically, in s…
We consider symmetric (under the action of products of finite symmetric groups) real algebraic varieties and semi-algebraic sets, as well as symmetric complex varieties in affine and projective spaces, defined by polynomials of degrees bounded by a fixed constant $d$. We prove that if a Specht module, $\mathbb{S}^λ$, appears with positive multiplicity in the isotypic decomposition of the cohomology modules of such sets, then the rank of the partition $λ$ is bounded by $O(d)$. This implies a polynomial (in the dimension of the ambient space) bound on the number of such modules. Furthermore, we …
