On the cohomology of spatial polygons in Euclidean spaces

The cohomology ring of weight varieties and polygon spaces

We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to find explicit formulæfor the rational cohomology rings of the symplectic reduction of flag varieties in C^n, or generic coadjoint orbits of SU(n), by (maximal) torus actions. We also calculate the cohomology ring of the moduli space of $n$ points in CP^k, which is isomorphic to the Grassmannian of k-planes in C^n, by realizing it as a degenerate coadjoint orbit.

The Toric Geometry of Triangulated Polygons in Euclidean Space

Speyer and Sturmfels [SpSt] associated Gröbner toric degenerations $\mathrm{Gr}_2(\C^n)^{\tree}$ of $\mathrm{Gr}_2(\C^n)$ to each trivalent tree $\tree$ with $n$ leaves. These degenerations induce toric degenerations $M_{\br}^{\tree}$ of $M_{\br}$, the space of $n$ ordered, weighted (by $\br$) points on the projective line. On the zeta function of a projective complete intersection

We compute a basis for the p-adic Dwork cohomology of a smooth complete intersection in projective space over a finite field and use it to give p-adic estimates for the action of Frobenius on this cohomology. In particular, we prove that the Newton polygon of the characteristic polynomial of Frobenius lies on or above the associated Hodge polygon. This result was first proved by B. Mazur using crystalline cohomology.

Hyperpolygon spaces and their cores

Given an n-tuple of positive real numbers, Konno defines an algebraic variety called a hyperpolygon space, a hyperkahler analogue of the Kahler variety parametrizing spacial polygons with fixed edge lengths. Convex functions on symmetric spaces, side lengths of polygons and stability inequalities for weighted configurations at infinity

In a symmetric space of noncompact type X = G/K oriented geodesic segments correspond to points in the Euclidean Weyl chamber. We can hence assign vector-valued side-lengths to segments. Our main result is a system of homogeneous linear inequalities describing the restrictions on the side -lengths of closed polygons. The inequalities are based on the mod 2 Schubert calculus in the real Grassmannians G/P for maximal parabolic subgroups P.

Point Configurations and Cayley-Menger Varieties

Equivalence classes of $n$-point configurations in Euclidean, Hermitian, and quaternionic spaces are related, respectively, to classical determinantal varieties of symmetric, general, and skew-symmetric bilinear forms. Cayley-Menger varieties arise in the Euclidean case, and have relevance for mechanical linkages, polygon spaces and rigidity theory. Applications include upper bounds for realizations of planar Laman graphs with prescribed edge-lengths and examples of special Lagrangians in Calabi-Yau manifolds.

On the middle dimensional homology classes of equilateral polygon spaces

Let $M_n$ be the configuration space of equilateral polygonal linkages with $n$ vertices in the Euclidean plane ${\mathbb R}^2$. We consider the case that $n$ is odd and set $n=2m+1$. In spite of the long history of research, the homology classes in $H_{m-1}(M_n;{\mathbb Z})$ are mysterious and not well-understood. Let $τ\colon M_n \to M_n$ be the involution induced by complex conjugation. In this paper, we determine the representation matrix of the homomorphism $τ_\ast\colon H_{m-1}(M_n;{\mathbb Z}) \to H_{m-1}(M_n;{\mathbb Z})$ with respect to a basis of $H_{m-1}(M_n;{\mathbb Z})$.

Moduli Spaces of Stable Polygons and Symplectic Structures on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$

In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, {\it the stable polygons}, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ of the Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus 0.
