Let A be a finite dimensional Hopf algebra and (H, R) a quasitriangular bialgebra. Denote by H^*_R a certain deformation of the multiplication of H^* via R. We prove that H^*_R is a quantum commutative left H\otimes H^{op cop}-module algebra. If H is the Drinfel'd double of A then H^*_R is the Heisenberg double of A. We study the relation between H^*_R and Majid's "covariantised product". We give a formula for the canonical element of the Heisenberg double of A, solution to the pentagon equation, in terms of the R-matrix of the Drinfel'd double of A. We generalize a theorem of Jiang-Hua Lu on quantum groupoids and using this and the above we obtain an example of a quantum groupoid having the Heisenberg double of A as base. If, in Richard Borcherds' concept of a "vertex group" we allow the "ring of singular functions" to be noncommutative, we prove that if A is a finite dimensional cocommutative Hopf algebra then the Heisenberg double of A is a vertex group over A. The construction and properties of H^*_R are given also for quasi-bialgebras and a definition for the Heisenberg double of a finite dimensional quasi-Hopf algebra is proposed.
A new quantization of groupoids under the name of \times-Hopf coalgebras is introduced. We develop a Hopf cyclic theory with coefficients in stable-anti-Yetter-Drinfeld modules for \times-Hopf coalgebras. We use \times-Hopf coalgebras to study coextensions of coalgebras. Finally, equivariant \times-Hopf coalgebra Galois coextensions are defined and applied as functors between categories of stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld modules over \times-Hopf coalgebras involved in the coextension.
We construct explicit examples of weak Hopf algebras (actually face algebras in the sense of Hayashi) via vacant double groupoids as explained in \http://arxiv.org/abs/math.QA/0308228. To this end, we first study the Kac exact sequence for matched pairs of groupoids and show that it can be computed via group cohomology. Then we describe explicit examples of finite vacant double groupoids.
We give a detailed comparison between the notion of a weak Hopf algebra (also called a quantum groupoid by Nikshych and Vainerman), and that of a $\times_R$-bialgebra due to Takeuchi (and also called a bialgebroid or quantum (semi)groupoid by Lu and Xu). A weak bialgebra is the same thing as a $\times_R$-bialgebra in which $R$ is Frobenius-separable. We extend the comparison to cover module and comodule theory, duality, and the question when a bialgebroid should be called a Hopf algebroid.
We summarize the definition of the Weyl groupoid using supercategory approach in order to investigate quantum superalgebras at roots of unity. We show how the structure of a Hopf superalgebra on a quantum superalgebra is determined by the quantum Weyl groupoid. The Weyl groupoid of $\mathfrak{sl}(m|n)$ is constructed to this end as some supercategory. We prove that in this case quantum superalgebras associated with Dynkin diagrams are isomorphic as superalgebras. It is shown how these quantum superalgebras considered as Hopf superalgebras are connected via twists and isomorphisms. We explicitl…
Like quantum groups, quantum groupoids frequently appear in pairs of mutually dual objects. We develop a general Pontrjagin duality theory for quantum groupoids in the algebraic setting that extends Van Daele's duality theory for multiplier Hopf algebras and overcomes the finiteness restrictions of the approach of Kadison, Szlachányi, Böhm and Schauenburg. Our construction is based on the integration theory for multiplier Hopf algebroids and yields, as a corollary, a duality theory for weak multiplier Hopf algebras with integrals. We compute the duals in several examples and introduce morphism…

We introduce the notion of Hopf algebroids, in which neither the total algebras nor the base algebras are required to be commutative. We give a class of Hopf algebroids associated to module algebras of the Drinfeld doubles of Hopf algebras when the $R$-matrices act properly. When this construction is applied to quantum groups, we get examples of quantum groupoids, which are semi-classical limits of Poisson groupoids. The example of quantum $sl(2)$ is worked out in details.
We give the construction of a class of weak Hopf algebras (or quantum groupoids) associated to a matched pair of groupoids and certain cocycle data. This generalizes a now well-known construction for Hopf algebras, first studied by G. I. Kac in the sixties. Our approach is based on the notion of double groupoids, as introduced by Ehresmann.
Bialgebroids, separable bialgebroids, and weak Hopf algebras are compared from a categorical point of view. Then properties of weak Hopf algebras and their applications to finite index and finite depth inclusions of von Neumann algebras are shortly reviewed. A hint is given at a duality between bialgebroid actions and abstract inclusions in 2-categories.
Coactions of Hopf C*-bimodules simultaneously generalize coactions of Hopf C*-algebras and actions of groupoids. Following an approach of Baaj and Skandalis, we construct reduced crossed products and establish a duality for fine coactions. Examples of coactions arise from Fell bundles on groupoids and actions of a groupoid on bundles of C*-algebras. Continuous Fell bundles on an etale groupoid correspond to coactions of the reduced groupoid algebra, and actions of a groupoid on a continuous bundle of C*-algebras correspond to coactions of the function algebra.
Proposing a certain category of bialgebroid maps we show that the balanced depth 2 extensions appear as they were the finitary Galois extensions in the context of quantum groupoid actions, i.e., actions by finite bialgebroids, weak bialgebras or weak Hopf algebras. We comment on deformation of weak bialgebras, on half grouplike elements, on uniqueness of weak Hopf algebra reconstructions and discuss the example of separable field extensions.
We build on our construction of Hopf algebroids from noncommutative calculi under the further assumption of surjectivity for the calculus. We also introduce the notions of Hopf ideals and isotopy quotients for arbitrary Hopf algebroids. Using these ingredients, we prove a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence for digraphs, by showing that the groupoid algebra of the fundamental groupoid of a digraph is isomorphic to the isotopy quotient of the Hopf algberoid corresponding to flat connections over the digraph.
Motivated by work of Kac and Lusztig, we define a root system and a Weyl groupoid for a large class of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over an arbitrary Hopf algebra. The obtained combinatorial structure fits perfectly into an existing framework of generalized root systems associated to a family of Cartan matrices, and provides novel insight into Nichols algebras. We demonstrate the power of our construction with new results on Nichols algebras over finite non-abelian simple groups and symmetric groups. A fundamental feature of quantum groups is that many come in pairs of mutually dual objects, like finite-dimensional Hopf algebras and their duals, or quantisations of function algebras and of universal enveloping algebras of Poisson-Lie groups. The same phenomenon was studied for quantum groupoids in various settings. In the purely algebraic setup, the construction of a dual object was given by Schauenburg and by Kadison and Szlachányi, but required the quantum groupoid to be finite with respect to the base. A sophisticated duality for measured quantum groupoids was developed by Enock, Lesieu…
Any etale Lie groupoid G is completely determined by its associated convolution algebra C_c(G) equipped with the natural Hopf algebroid structure. We extend this result to the generalized morphisms between etale Lie groupoids: we show that any principal H-bundle P over G is uniquely determined by the associated C_c(G)-C_c(H)-bimodule C_c(P) equipped with the natural coalgebra structure. Furthermore, we prove that the functor C_c gives an equivalence between the Morita category of etale Lie groupoids and the Morita category of locally grouplike Hopf algebroids.
We use categories of representations of finite dimensional quantum groupoids (weak Hopf algebras) to construct ribbon and modular categories that give rise to invariants of knots and 3-manifolds.
In this paper we introduce the notion of partial action of a weak Hopf algebra on algebras, unifying the notions of partial group action [11], partial Hopf action ([2],[3],[9]) and partial groupoid action [4]. We construct the fundamental tools to develop this new subject, namely, the partial smash product and the globalization of a partial action, as well as, we establish a connection between partial and global smash products via the construction of a surjective Morita context. In particular, in the case that the globalization is unital, these smash products are Morita equivalent. We show tha…
We show that fusion categories $\Rep(\ku^σ_τ \Tc)$ of representations of the weak Hopf algebra coming from a vacant double groupoid $\Tc$ and a pair $(σ, τ)$ of compatible 2-cocyles are group-theoretical.
We introduce the category of set-theoretic representations of a matched pair of groupoids. This is a monoidal category endowed with a monoidal functor to the category of quivers over the common base of the groupoids in the matched pair (the forgetful functor). We study monoidal functors between two such categories of representations which preserve the forgetful functor. We show that the centralizer of such a monoidal functor is the category of representations of a new matched pair, which we construct explicitly. We introduce the notions of {\em double} of a matched pair of groupoids and {\em g…
This is an introduction to double algebras which is the structure modelled by the properties of the convolution product in Hopf algebras, weak Hopf algebras and in Hopf algebroids. We show that Hopf algebroids with a Frobenius integral can be characterized as the double algebras in which the two multiplications satisfy distributivity. We discuss questions of duality, antipode, Maschke theorem and examples.
By using twist construction, we obtain a quantum groupoid $\cald\ot_{q}\uqg$ for any simple Lie algebra $\frakg$. The underlying Hopf algebroid structure encodes all the information of the corresponding elliptic quantum group-the quasi-Hopf algebras as obtained by Fronsdal, Arnaudon et. al. and Jimbo et. al..
In this paper we establish a duality between etale Lie groupoids and a class of non-necessarily commutative algebras with a Hopf algebroid structure. For any etale Lie groupoid G over a manifold M, the groupoid algebra C_c(G) of smooth functions with compact support on G has a natural coalgebra structure over C_c(M) which makes it into a Hopf algebroid. Conversely, for any Hopf algebroid A over C_c(M) we construct the associated spectral etale Lie groupoid G_sp(A) over M such that G_sp(C_c(G)) is naturally isomorphic to G. Both these constructions are functorial, and C_c is fully faithful left…
We introduce C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and concrete Hopf C*-bimodules for the study of quantum groupoids in the setting of C*-algebras. These unitaries and Hopf C*-bimodules generalize multiplicative unitaries and Hopf C*-algebras and are analogues of the pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and Hopf--von Neumann-bimod-ules studied by Enock, Lesieur and Vallin. To each C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitary, we associate two Fourier algebras with a duality pairing, a C*-tensor category of representations, and in the regular case two reduced and two universal Hopf C*-bimodules. The theory is illu…
We establish the equivalence of three versions of a finite dimensional quantum groupoid: a generalized Kac algebra introduced by T. Yamanouchi, a weak $C^*$-Hopf algebra introduced by G. Bohm, F. Nill and K. Szlachanyi (with an involutive antipode), and a Kac bimodule -- an algebraic version of a Hopf bimodule, the notion introduced by J.-M. Vallin. We also study the structure and construct examples of finite dimensional quantum groupoids.
In present paper, some properties of Hopf action on vertex algebras will be given. We prove that $V#H$ is an $\mathcal{S}$-local vertex algebra but it is not a vertex algebra when $V$ is an $H$-module vertex algebra. In addition, we extend the $\mathcal{S}$-locality to the quantum vertex algebras.
Weak (Hopf) bialgebras are described as (Hopf) bimonoids in appropriate duoidal (also known as 2-monoidal) categories. This interpretation is used to define a category wba of weak bialgebras over a given field. As an application, the "free vector space" functor from the category of small categories with finitely many objects to wba is shown to possess a right adjoint, given by taking (certain) group-like elements. This adjunction is proven to restrict to the full subcategories of groupoids and of weak Hopf algebras, respectively. As a corollary, we obtain equivalences between the category of s…
We define motivic iterated integrals on the affine line, and give a simple proof of the formula for the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of they make. We show that it encodes the group law in the automorphism group of certain non-commutative variety. We relate the coproduct with the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted planar trivalent trees - a planar decorated version of the Hopf algebra defined by Connes and Kreimer. As an application we derive explicit formulas for the coproduct in the motivic multiple polylogarithm Hopf algebra. We give a criteria for a motivic iterated integral…
Multiplier Hopf algebroids are algebraic versions of quantum groupoids that generalize Hopf algebroids to the non-unital case and weak (multiplier) Hopf algebras to non-separable base algebras. The main structure maps of a multiplier Hopf algebroid are a left and a right comultiplication. We show that bijectivity of two associated canonical maps is equivalent to the existence of an antipode, discuss invertibility of the antipode, and present some examples and special cases.
In this article, we develop a theory of integration on algebraic quantum groupoids in the form of regular multiplier Hopf algebroids, and establish the main properties of integrals obtained by Van Daele for algebraic quantum groups before - faithfulness, uniqueness up to scaling, existence of a modular element and existence of a modular automorphism - for algebraic quantum groupoids under reasonable assumptions. The approach to integration developed in this article forms the basis for the extension of Pontrjagin duality to algebraic quantum groupoids, and for the passage from algebraic quantum…
We give a survey of the theory of finite quantum groupoids (weak Hopf algebras), including foundations of the theory and applications to finite depth subfactors, dynamical deformations of quantum groups, and invariants of knots and 3-manifolds.
The theory of Nichols algebras of diagonal type is known to be closely related to that of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper the connection between both theories is made closer. For any Nichols algebra of diagonal type invertible transformations are introduced, which remind one of the action of the Weyl group on the root system associated to a semisimple Lie algebra. They give rise to the definition of a Brandt groupoid. As an application an alternative proof of classification results of Rosso, Andruskiewitsch, and Schneider is obtained without using any technical assumptions on the braidi…
We study the Nichols algebra of a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld module and introduce new invariants such as real roots. The crucial ingredient is a `reflection' in the class of such Nichols algebras. We conclude the classifications of finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras over S_3, and of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over S_4. The revised version contains an extended introduction with references to recent applications, and a simplified definition of the Weyl groupoid of a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld module. Key words: Hopf algebras, quantum groups, Weyl groupoid
Let $(R^{\vee},R)$ be a dual pair of Hopf algebras in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over a Hopf algebra $H$ with bijective antipode. We show that there is a braided monoidal isomorphism between rational left Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the bosonizations of $R$ and of $R^{\vee}$, respectively. As an application of this very general category isomorphism we obtain a natural proof of the existence of reflections of Nichols algebras of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over $H$. Key words: Hopf algebras, quantum groups, Weyl groupoid
We propose a definition of compact quantum groupoids in the setting of C*-algebras, associate to such a quantum groupoid a regular C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitary, and use this unitary to construct a dual Hopf C*-bimodule and to pass to a measurable quantum groupoid in the sense of Enock and Lesieur. Moreover, we discuss examples related to compact and to étale groupoids and study principal compact C*-quantum groupoids.
Dynamical quantum groups were introduced by Etingof and Varchenko in connection with the dynamical quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and measured quantum groupoids were introduced by Enock, Lesieur and Vallin in their study of inclusions of type II_1 factors. In this article, we associate to suitable dynamical quantum groups, which are a purely algebraic objects, Hopf C*-bimodules and measured quantum groupoids on the level of von Neumann algebras. Assuming invariant integrals on the dynamical quantum group, we first construct a fundamental unitary which yields Hopf bimodules on the level of C*-al…
We develop the theory of weak bimonoids in braided monoidal categories and show them to be quantum categories in a certain sense. Weak Hopf monoids are shown to be quantum groupoids. Each separable Frobenius monoid R leads to a weak Hopf monoid R \otimes R.
A crossed module is (A,H,d,\la) where d:A\to H is a homomorphism of groups and H acts on A, with conditions leading to a groupoid A\lcross H{\to\atop \to}H as an example of a strict 2-group. We give the corresponding notion of a quantum 2-group where we replace the above by Hopf algebras and introduce a new version of quantum groupoid. The work also suggests a natural notion of braided crossed module where A a braided-Hopf algebra in the braided category Z({}_H\CM) of crossed H-modules, although without the full groupoid picture in this more general case.
We study the Yang-Baxter equation for the $R$-matrices of the six-vertex model. We analyze the solutions and give new parametrizations of the Yang-Baxter equation. In particular, we find the maximal commutative families of parametrized solutions which generalize the $R$-matrices from the affine quantum (super)-groups. Then we give a new parametrization of the Yang-Baxter equation by a groupoid of non-free-fermionic matrices. In the appendix, we study the general algebraic structure of the solutions of the Yang-Baxter and formulate a conjecture that extends the conjecture by Brubaker, Bump, and…
We present a formal algebraic language to deal with quantum deformations of Lie-Rinehart algebras - or Lie algebroids, in a geometrical setting. In particular, extending the ice-breaking ideas introduced by Xu in [Ping Xu, "Quantum groupoids", Comm. Math. Phys. 216 (2001), 539-581], we provide suitable notions of "quantum groupoids". For these objects, we detail somewhat in depth the formalism of linear duality; this yields several fundamental antiequivalences among (the categories of) the two basic kinds of "quantum groupoids". On the other hand, we develop a suitable version of a "quantum du…
The notion of H-covariant strong Morita equivalence is introduced for *-algebras over C = R(i) with an ordered ring R which are equipped with a *-action of a Hopf *-algebra H. This defines a corresponding H-covariant strong Picard groupoid which encodes the entire Morita theory. Dropping the positivity conditions one obtains H-covariant *-Morita equivalence with its H-covariant *-Picard groupoid. We discuss various groupoid morphisms between the corresponding notions of the Picard groupoids. Moreover, we realize several Morita invariants in this context as arising from actions of the H-covaria…
A cohomology theory of the adjoint of Hopf algebras, via deformations, is presented by means of diagrammatic techniques. Explicit calculations are provided in the cases of group algebras, function algebras on groups, and the bosonization of the super line. As applications, solutions to the YBE are given and quandle cocycles are constructed from groupoid cocycles.
We prove a cyclic cohomological analogue of Haefliger's van Est-type theorem for the groupoid of germs of diffeomorphisms of a manifold. The differentiable version of cyclic cohomology is associated to the algebra of transverse differential operators on that groupoid, which is shown to carry an intrinsic Hopf algebraic structure. We establish a canonical isomorphism between the periodic Hopf cyclic cohomology of this extended Hopf algebra and the Gelfand-Fuchs cohomology of the Lie algebra of formal vector fields. We then show that this isomorphism can be explicitly implemented at the cochain …
In this work, we study another characterization of Yetter-Drinfeld algebras over finite-dimensional Hopf algebras. We show the equivalence between this characterization, called the "only coaction" characterization, and the standard "action-coaction" characterization. This modern approach for Yetter-Drinfeld algebras is one of the key ingredient in a self-dual theory of quantum transformation groupoids arising from actions of quantum groups.
In the present work, we study Yetter-Drinfeld algebras over a pairing of multiplier Hopf algebras. Our main motivation is the construction of a self-dual theory of (C*-)algebraic quantum transformation groupoids. Instead of the standard characterization of Yetter-Drinfeld algebras given in the case of Hopf algebras, we develop an equivalent "only coaction" characterization in the framework of multiplier Hopf algebras. Finally, as a special case, we focus on Yetter-Drinfeld structures over Van Daele's algebraic quantum groups.
The Hopf actions on vertex operator algebras are investigated. If the action is semisimple, a Schur-Weyl type decomposition is obtained. When the Hopf algebra is finite dimensional and the action is faithful, the action is a group action. Moreover if the Hopf algebra is finite dimensional and the action is semisimple and inner faithful, the action is also a group action. In this case, inner faithfulness is equivalent to faithfulness.
A useful general concept of bialgebroid seems to be resolving itself in recent publications; we give a treatment in terms of modules and enriched categories. We define the term "quantum category". The definition of antipode for a bialgebroid is less resolved in the literature. Our suggestion is that the kind of dualization occurring in Barr's star-autonomous categories is more suitable than autonomy (= compactness = rigidity). This leads to our definition of quantum groupoid intended as a "Hopf algebra with several objects".
In this work the notions of partial action of a weak Hopf algebra on a coalgebra and partial action of a groupoid on a coalgebra will be introduced, just as some important properties. An equivalence between these notions will be presented. Finally, a dual relation between the structures of partial action on a coalgebra and partial action on an algebra will be established, as well as a globalization theorem for partial module coalgebras will be presented.
Arithmetic root systems are invariants of Nichols algebras of diagonal type with a certain finiteness property. They can also be considered as generalizations of ordinary root systems with rich structure and many new examples. On the other hand, Nichols algebras are fundamental objects in the construction of quantized enveloping algebras, in the noncommutative differential geometry of quantum groups, and in the classification of pointed Hopf algebras by the lifting method of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider. In the present paper arithmetic root systems are classified in full generality. As a bypr…
We introduce dynamical analogues of the free orthogonal and free unitary quantum groups, which are no longer Hopf algebras but Hopf algebroids or quantum groupoids. These objects are constructed on the purely algebraic level and on the level of universal C*-algebras. As an example, we recover the dynamical SU_q(2) studied by Koelink and Rosengren, and construct a refinement that includes several interesting limit cases.
For a Lie groupoid G over a smooth manifold M we construct the adjoint action of the etale Lie groupoid G# of germs of local bisections of G on the Lie algebroid g of G. With this action, we form the associated convolution C_c(M)/R-bialgebra C_c(G#,g). We represent this C_c(M)/R-bialgebra in the algebra of transversal distributions on G. This construction extends the Cartier-Gabriel decomposition of the Hopf algebra of distributions with finite support on a Lie group.
