Motivated by work of Kac and Lusztig, we define a root system and a Weyl groupoid for a large class of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over an arbitrary Hopf algebra. The obtained combinatorial structure fits perfectly into an existing framework of generalized root systems associated to a family of Cartan matrices, and provides novel insight into Nichols algebras. We demonstrate the power of our construction with new results on Nichols algebras over finite non-abelian simple groups and symmetric groups.

The theory of Nichols algebras of diagonal type is known to be closely related to that of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper the connection between both theories is made closer. For any Nichols algebra of diagonal type invertible transformations are introduced, which remind one of the action of the Weyl group on the root system associated to a semisimple Lie algebra. They give rise to the definition of a Brandt groupoid. As an application an alternative proof of classification results of Rosso, Andruskiewitsch, and Schneider is obtained without using any technical assumptions on the braidi…
We translate the concept of restriction of an arrangement in terms of Hopf algebras. In consequence, every Nichols algebra gives rise to a simplicial complex decorated by Nichols algebras with restricted root systems. As applications, some of these Nichols algebras provide Weyl groupoids which do not arise for Nichols algebras over finite groups and in fact we realize all root systems of finite Weyl groupoids of rank greater than three. Further, our result explains the root systems of the folded Nichols algebras over nonabelian groups and of generalized Satake diagrams.
We study the Nichols algebra of a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld module and introduce new invariants such as real roots. The crucial ingredient is a `reflection' in the class of such Nichols algebras. We conclude the classifications of finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras over S_3, and of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over S_4. The revised version contains an extended introduction with references to recent applications, and a simplified definition of the Weyl groupoid of a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld module. We study graded right coideal subalgebras of Nichols algebras of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules. Assuming that the Yetter-Drinfeld module admits all reflections and the Nichols algebra is decomposable, we construct an injective order preserving and order reflecting map between morphisms of the Weyl groupoid and graded right coideal subalgebras of the Nichols algebra. Here morphisms are ordered with respect to right Duflo order and right coideal subalgebras are ordered with respect to inclusion. If the Weyl groupoid is finite, then we prove that the Nichols algebra is decomposable and the a…
Over fields of arbitrary characteristic we classify all rank three Nichols algebras of diagonal type with a finite root system. Our proof uses the classification of the finite Weyl groupoids of rank three.
Yetter--Drinfel'd modules of diagonal type admit an equivalence relation which conjecturally preserves dimension and Gel'fand--Kirillov dimension of the corresponding Nichols algebras. This relation is determined explicitly for all rank 2 Yetter--Drinfeld modules where the Gel'fand--Kirillov dimension is known to be finite. We give a description of the (small) quantum cohomology ring of the flag variety as a certain commutative subalgebra in the tensor product of the Nichols algebras. Our main result can be considered as a quantum analog of a result by Y. Bazlov.
The concept of arithmetic root systems is introduced. It is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between arithmetic root systems and Nichols algebras of diagonal type having a finite set of (restricted) Poincare'-Birkhoff-Witt generators. This has strong consequences for both objects. As an application all rank 2 Nichols algebras of diagonal type having a finite set of (restricted) Poincare'-Birkhoff-Witt generators are determined. We show that except in several cases conjugacy classes of classical Weyl groups $W(B_n)$ and $W(D_n)$ are of type {\rm D}. We prove that except in three cases Nichols algebras of irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld ({\rm YD} in short )modules over the classical Weyl groups are infinite dimensional. We establish the relationship between Fomin-Kirillov algebra $\mathcal E_n$ and Nichols algebra $\mathfrak{B} ({\mathcal O}_{(1, 2)} , ε\otimes {\rm sgn})$ of transposition over symmetry group by means of quiver Hopf algebras. We generalize {\rm FK } algebra. The characteristic of finiteness of Nichols alge…
We compute the finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over the sum of two simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules V and W over non-abelian quotients of a certain central extension of the dihedral group of eight elements or SL(2,3), and such that the Weyl groupoid of the pair (V,W) is finite. These central extensions appear in the classification of non-elementary finite-dimensional Nichols algebras with finite Weyl groupoid of rank two. We deduce new information on the structure of primitive elements of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over groups.
We study Hamilton circuits of the Cayley graphs of the Weyl groupoids of the generalized quantum groups, or the quantum double of the Nichols algebras of diagonal-type, with finite root systems. We prove the existence of a Hamilton circuit for any of them and explicitly draw one of them for rank 3 and 4 cases.
It is shown that except in three cases conjugacy classes of classical Weyl groups $W(B_{n})$ and $W(D_{n})$ are of type ${\rm D}$. This proves that Nichols algebras of irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the classical Weyl groups $\mathbb W_{n}$ (i.e. $H_{n}\rtimes \mathbb{S}_{n}$) are infinite dimensional, except the class of type $(2, 3),(1^{2}, 3)$ in $\mathbb S_{5}$, and $(1^{n-2}, 2)$ in $\mathbb S_{n}$ for $n >5$.
We prove that Nichols algebras of irreducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules over classical Weyl groups $A \rtimes \mathbb S_n$ supported by $\mathbb S_n$ are infinite dimensional, except in three cases. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for Nichols algebras of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over classical Weyl groups $A \rtimes \mathbb S_n$ supported by $A$ to be finite dimensional.
Nichols algebras are a fundamental building block of pointed Hopf algebras. Part of the classification program of finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras with the lifting method of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider is the determination of the liftings, i.e., all possible deformations of a given Nichols algebra. Based on recent work of Heckenberger about Nichols algebras of diagonal type we compute explicitly the liftings of all Nichols algebras with Cartan matrix of type A_2, some Nichols algebras with Cartan matrix of type B_2, and some Nichols algebras of two Weyl equivalence classes of non-sta…
We construct chiral algebras that centralize rank-two Nichols algebras with at least one fermionic generator. This gives "logarithmic" W-algebra extensions of a fractional-level ^sl(2) algebra. We discuss crucial aspects of the emerging general relation between Nichols algebras and logarithmic CFT models: (i) the extra input, beyond the Nichols algebra proper, needed to uniquely specify a conformal model; (ii) a relation between the CFT counterparts of Nichols algebras connected by Weyl groupoid maps; and (iii) the common double bosonization U(X) of such Nichols algebras. For an extended chira…
We discuss a class of generalized divided difference operators which give rise to a representation of Nichols-Woronowicz algebras associated to Weyl groups. For the root system of type $A,$ we also study the condition for the deformations of the Fomin-Kirillov quadratic algebra, which is a quadratic lift of the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra, to admit a representation given by generalized divided difference operators. The relations satisfied by the mutually commuting elements called Dunkl elements in the deformed Fomin-Kirillov algebra are determined. The Dunkl elements correspond to the truncated…
A relationship between continued fractions and Weyl groupoids of Cartan schemes of rank two is found. This allows to decide easily if a given Cartan scheme of rank two admits a finite root system. We obtain obstructions and sharp bounds for the entries of the Cartan matrices. Key words: Cartan matrix, continued fraction, Nichols algebra, Weyl groupoid
Arithmetic root systems are invariants of Nichols algebras of diagonal type with a certain finiteness property. They can also be considered as generalizations of ordinary root systems with rich structure and many new examples. On the other hand, Nichols algebras are fundamental objects in the construction of quantized enveloping algebras, in the noncommutative differential geometry of quantum groups, and in the classification of pointed Hopf algebras by the lifting method of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider. In the present paper arithmetic root systems are classified in full generality. As a bypr…
We adapt the generalization of root systems of the second author and H. Yamane to the terminology of category theory. We introduce Cartan schemes, associated root systems and Weyl groupoids. After some preliminary general results, we completely classify all finite Weyl groupoids with at most three objects. The classification yields that there exist infinitely many standard, but only 9 exceptional cases. Key words: Nichols algebra, reflection, root system, Weyl groupoid
We obtain Drinfeld second realization of the quantum affine superalgebras associated with the affine Lie superalgebra $D^{(1)}(2,1;x)$. Our results are analogous to those obtained by Beck for the quantum affine algebras. Beck's analysis uses heavily the (extended) affine Weyl groups of the affine Lie algebras. In our approach the structures are based on a Weyl groupoid.
We summarize the definition of the Weyl groupoid using supercategory approach in order to investigate quantum superalgebras at roots of unity. We show how the structure of a Hopf superalgebra on a quantum superalgebra is determined by the quantum Weyl groupoid. The Weyl groupoid of $\mathfrak{sl}(m|n)$ is constructed to this end as some supercategory. We prove that in this case quantum superalgebras associated with Dynkin diagrams are isomorphic as superalgebras. It is shown how these quantum superalgebras considered as Hopf superalgebras are connected via twists and isomorphisms. We explicitl…

The paper purposes to contribute to the classification of pointed Hopf algebras by the method of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider. The structure of arithmetic root systems is enlightened such that their relation to ordinary root systems associated to semi-simple Lie algebras becomes more astounding. As an application all arithmetic root systems of rank 3 are determined. The result gives in particular all finite dimensional rank 3 Nichols algebras of diagonal type over a field of characteristic zero. Key Words: Weyl groupoid, Hopf algebra, Nichols algebra
We classify all groups G and all pairs (V,W) of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over G such that the support of the direct sum of V and W generates G, the square of the braiding between V and W is not the identity, and the Nichols algebra of the direct sum of V and W admits a finite root system. As a byproduct, we determine the dimensions of such Nichols algebras, and several new families of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras are obtained. Our main tool is the Weyl groupoid of pairs of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over groups.
We continue our study of Cartan schemes and their Weyl groupoids. The results in this paper provide an algorithm to determine connected simply connected Cartan schemes of rank three, where the real roots form a finite irreducible root system. The algorithm terminates: Up to equivalence there are exactly 55 such Cartan schemes, and the number of corresponding real roots varies between 6 and 37. We identify those Weyl groupoids which appear in the classification of Nichols algebras of diagonal type.
We introduce nil-Hecke algebras for Weyl groupoids. We describe a basis and some properties of these algebras which lead to a notion of Bruhat order for Weyl groupoids.
We classify all non-abelian groups G such that there exists a pair (V,W) of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over G such that the Nichols algebra of the direct sum of V and W is finite-dimensional under two assumptions: the square of the braiding between V and W is not the identity, and G is generated by the support of V and W. As a corollary, we prove that the dimensions of such V and W are at most six. As a tool we use the Weyl groupoid of (V,W).
A Virasoro central charge can be associated with each Nichols algebra with diagonal braiding in a way that is invariant under the Weyl groupoid action. The central charge takes very suggestive values for some items in Heckenberger's list of rank-2 Nichols algebras. In particular, this might be viewed as an indication of the existence of reasonable logarithmic extensions of W_3==WA_2, WB_2, and WG_2 models of conformal field theory. In the W_3 case, the construction of an octuplet extended algebra---a counterpart of the triplet (1,p) algebra---is outlined.
We construct a model of the affine nil-Hecke algebra as a subalgebra of the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra associated to a Yetter-Drinfeld module over the affine Weyl group. We also discuss the Peterson isomorphism between the homology of the affine Grassmannian and the small quantum cohomology ring of the flag variety in terms of the braided differential calculus.
Over fields of arbitrary characteristic we classify all braid-indecomposable tuples of at least two absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over non-abelian groups such that the group is generated by the support of the tuple and the Nichols algebra of the tuple is finite-dimensional. Such tuples are classified in terms of analogs of Dynkin diagrams which encode much information about the Yetter-Drinfeld modules. We also compute the dimensions of these finite-dimensional Nichols algebras. Our proof uses the Weyl groupoid of a tuple of simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules.
In the structure theory of quantized enveloping algebras, the algebra isomorphisms determined by Lusztig led to the first general construction of PBW bases of these algebras. Also, they have important applications to the representation theory of these and related algebras. In the present paper the Drinfel'd double for a class of graded Hopf algebras is investigated. Various quantum algebras, including multiparameter quantizations of semisimple Lie algebras and of Lie superalgebras, are covered by the given definition. For these Drinfel'd doubles Lusztig maps are defined. It is shown that these…
All -1-type pointed Hopf algebras and central quantum linear spaces with Weyl groups of exceptional type are found. It is proved that every non -1-type pointed Hopf algebra with real $G(H)$ is infinite dimensional and every central quantum linear space over finite group is finite dimensional. It is proved that except a few cases Nichols algebras of reducible Yetter-Drinfeld modules over Weyl groups of exceptional type are infinite dimensional.
This is a survey on Nichols algebras of diagonal type with finite dimension, or more generally with arithmetic root system. The knowledge of these algebras is the cornerstone of the classification program of pointed Hopf algebras with finite dimension, or finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension; and their structure should be indispensable for the understanding of the representation theory, the computation of the various cohomologies, and many other aspects of finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras. These Nichols algebras were classified in [H-classif RS] as a notable application of the notions of …
This note is an application of classification results for finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over groups. We apply these results to generalizations of Fomin--Kirillov algebras to complex reflection groups. First, we focus on the case of cyclic groups where the corresponding Nichols algebras are only finite-dimensional up to order four, and we include results about the existence of Weyl groupoids and finite-dimensional Nichols subalgebras for this class. Second, recent results by Heckenberger--Vendramin [ArXiv e-prints, 1412.0857 (December 2014)] on the classification of Nichols algebras of se…
We extend properties of the weak order on finite Coxeter groups to Weyl groupoids admitting a finite root system. In particular, we determine the topological structure of intervals with respect to weak order, and show that the set of morphisms with fixed target object forms an ortho-complemented meet semilattice. We define the Coxeter complex of a Weyl groupoid with finite root system and show that it coincides with the triangulation of a sphere cut out by a simplicial hyperplane arrangement. As a consequence, one obtains an algebraic interpretation of many hyperplane arrangements that are not…
We introduce the simple notion of a "crystallographic arrangement" and prove a one-to-one correspondence between these arrangements and the connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots are a finite root system (up to equivalence on both sides). We thus obtain a more accessible definition for this very large subclass of the class of simplicial arrangements for which a complete classification is known.
The root systems appearing in the theory of Lie superalgebras and Nichols algebras admit a large symmetry extending properly the one coming from the Weyl group. Based on this observation we set up a general framework in which the symmetry object is a groupoid. We prove that in our context the groupoid is generated by reflections and Coxeter relations. This answers a question of Serganova. Our weak version of the exchange condition allows us to prove Matsumoto's theorem. Therefore the word problem is solved for the groupoid.
We classify finite-dimensional irreducible highest weight modules of generalized quantum groups whose positive part is infinite dimensional and has a Kharchenko's PBW basis with an irreducible finite positive root system.
We extend the classification of finite Weyl groupoids of rank two. Then we generalize these Weyl groupoids to `reflection groupoids' by admitting non-integral entries of the Cartan matrices. This leads to the unexpected observation that the spectrum of the cluster algebra of type $A_{n-3}$ completely describes the set of finite reflection groupoids of rank two with $2n$ objects.
Using previous results concerning the rank two and rank three cases, all connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots form a finite irreducible root system of arbitrary rank are determined. As a consequence one obtains the list of all crystallographic arrangements, a large subclass of the class of simplicial hyperplane arrangements. Supposing that the rank is at least three, the classification yields Cartan schemes of type $A$ and $B$, an infinite family of series involving the types $C$ and $D$, and $74$ sporadic examples.
Fomin and Kirillov initiated a line of research into the realization of the cohomology and $K$-theory of generalized flag varieties $G/B$ as commutative subalgebras of certain noncommutative algebras. This approach has several advantages, which we discuss. This paper contains the most comprehensive result in a series of papers related to the mentioned line of research. More precisely, we give a model for the $T$-equivariant $K$-theory of a generalized flag variety $K_T(G/B)$ in terms of a certain braided Hopf algebra called the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra. Our model is based on the Chevalley-ty…
Let $(R^{\vee},R)$ be a dual pair of Hopf algebras in the category of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over a Hopf algebra $H$ with bijective antipode. We show that there is a braided monoidal isomorphism between rational left Yetter-Drinfeld modules over the bosonizations of $R$ and of $R^{\vee}$, respectively. As an application of this very general category isomorphism we obtain a natural proof of the existence of reflections of Nichols algebras of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over $H$. Braided doubles provide a unifying framework for classical and quantum universal enveloping algebras and rational Cherednik algebras. They are a class of algebras with triangular decomposition, arising from a deformation problem, the solutions to which are called quasi-Yetter-Drinfeld modules. A basic family of quasi-YD modules is provided by braidings (matrices satisfying the quantum Yang-Baxter equation); these give rise to quantum versions of the Weyl algebra, where the role of polynomial rings is played by Nichols-Woronowicz algebras. Rational Cherednik algebras for t = 0 emerge as subalge…
The Shapovalov determinant for a class of pointed Hopf algebras is calculated, including quantized enveloping algebras, Lusztig's small quantum groups, and quantized Lie superalgebras. Our main tools are root systems, Weyl groupoids, and Lusztig type isomorphisms. We elaborate powerful novel techniques for the algebras at roots of unity, and pass to the general case using a density argument. Key words: Hopf algebra, Nichols algebra, quantum group, representation
We prove that certain screening operators in conformal field theory obey the algebra relations of a corresponding Nichols algebra with diagonal braiding. Our result proves in particular a long-standing expectation that the Borel parts of small quantum groups appear as the algebra of screening operators. The proof is based on a novel, intimate relation between Hopf algebras, vertex algebras and a class of multivalued analytic special functions, which are generalizations of Selberg integrals. We prove that the zeroes of these special functions correspond to the algebra relations of the respectiv…
We study subsets in possibly degenerate symplectic vector spaces over finite fields, which are stable under a given Coxeter/Weyl reflection group. These symplectic root systems provide crucial combinatorical data to classify finite-dimensional Nichols algebras for nilpotent groups G over the complex numbers [Len13a], where the symplectic form is given by the group's commutator map. For example, the degree of degeneracy of the symplectic root system determines the size of the center of G. In this article we classify symplectic root systems over the finite field F_2, where symplectic just means …
