The concept of arithmetic root systems is introduced. It is shown that there is a one-to-one correspondence between arithmetic root systems and Nichols algebras of diagonal type having a finite set of (restricted) Poincare'-Birkhoff-Witt generators. This has strong consequences for both objects. As an application all rank 2 Nichols algebras of diagonal type having a finite set of (restricted) Poincare'-Birkhoff-Witt generators are determined.

We determine the multiplicities of a class of roots for Nichols algebras of diagonal type of rank two, and identify the corresponding root vectors. Our analysis is based on a precise description of the relations of the Nichols algebra in the corresponding degrees.
Nichols algebras are fundamental objects in the construction of quantized enveloping algebras and in the classification of pointed Hopf algebras by lifting method of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider. Arithmetic root systems are invariants of Nichols algebras of diagonal type with a certain finiteness property. In the present paper, all rank 4 Nichols algebras of diagonal type with a finite arithmetic root system over fields of arbitrary characteristic are classified. Our proof uses the classification of the finite arithmetic root systems of rank 4.
In this paper, our main aim is to determine the multiplicities of a class of roots for Nichols algebra of diagonal type over fields of arbitrary characteristic, which is a generalization of the results on the multiplicities of these roots over fields of characteristic zero obtained by I. Heckenberber and the author.
Motivated by work of Kac and Lusztig, we define a root system and a Weyl groupoid for a large class of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over an arbitrary Hopf algebra. The obtained combinatorial structure fits perfectly into an existing framework of generalized root systems associated to a family of Cartan matrices, and provides novel insight into Nichols algebras. We demonstrate the power of our construction with new results on Nichols algebras over finite non-abelian simple groups and symmetric groups. We obtain a presentation by generators and relations of any Nichols algebra of diagonal type with finite root system. We prove that the defining ideal is finitely generated. The proof is based in Kharchenko's theory of PBW basis of Lyndon words. We prove that the lexicographic order on Lyndon words is convex for such PBW generators and so the PBW basis is orthogonal with respect to the canonical non-degenerate form associated to the Nichols algebra.
We translate the concept of restriction of an arrangement in terms of Hopf algebras. In consequence, every Nichols algebra gives rise to a simplicial complex decorated by Nichols algebras with restricted root systems. As applications, some of these Nichols algebras provide Weyl groupoids which do not arise for Nichols algebras over finite groups and in fact we realize all root systems of finite Weyl groupoids of rank greater than three. Further, our result explains the root systems of the folded Nichols algebras over nonabelian groups and of generalized Satake diagrams.
Let $(V,c)$ be a finite-dimensional braided vector space of diagonal type. We show that the Gelfand Kirillov dimension of the Nichols algebra $\mathfrak{B}(V)$ is finite if and only if the corresponding root system is finite, that is $\mathfrak{B}(V)$ admits a PBW basis with a finite number of generators. This had been conjectured in arXiv:1606.02521 and proved for $\dim V=2,3$ in arXiv:1803.08804, arXiv:2106.10143 respectively.
Arithmetic root systems are invariants of Nichols algebras of diagonal type with a certain finiteness property. They can also be considered as generalizations of ordinary root systems with rich structure and many new examples. On the other hand, Nichols algebras are fundamental objects in the construction of quantized enveloping algebras, in the noncommutative differential geometry of quantum groups, and in the classification of pointed Hopf algebras by the lifting method of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider. In the present paper arithmetic root systems are classified in full generality. As a bypr…
We study pre-Nichols algebras of quantum linear spaces and of Cartan type with finite GK-dimension. We prove that out of a short list of exceptions involving only roots of order 2, 3, 4, 6, any such pre-Nichols algebra is a quotient of the distinguished pre-Nichols algebra introduced by Angiono generalizing the De Concini-Procesi quantum groups. There are two new examples, one of which can be thought of as $G_2$ at a third root of one.
We prove {\rm (i)} Nichols algebra $\mathfrak B(V)$ of vector space $V$ is finite-dimensional if and only if Nichols braided Lie algebra $\mathfrak L(V)$ is finite-dimensional; {\rm (ii)} If the rank of connected $V$ is $2$ and $\mathfrak B(V)$ is an arithmetic root system, then $\mathfrak B(V) = F \oplus \mathfrak L(V);$ and {\rm (iii)} if $Δ(\mathfrak B(V))$ is an arithmetic root system and there does not exist any $m$-infinity element with $p_{uu} \not= 1$ for any $u \in D(V)$, then $\dim (\mathfrak B(V) ) = \infty$ if and only if there exists $V'$, which is twisting equivalent to $V$, such…
The paper purposes to contribute to the classification of pointed Hopf algebras by the method of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider. The structure of arithmetic root systems is enlightened such that their relation to ordinary root systems associated to semi-simple Lie algebras becomes more astounding. As an application all arithmetic root systems of rank 3 are determined. The result gives in particular all finite dimensional rank 3 Nichols algebras of diagonal type over a field of characteristic zero. Key Words: Weyl groupoid, Hopf algebra, Nichols algebra
Over fields of arbitrary characteristic we classify all rank three Nichols algebras of diagonal type with a finite root system. Our proof uses the classification of the finite Weyl groupoids of rank three.
It is shown that if $\mathfrak B(V) $ is connected Nichols algebra of diagonal type with $\dim V>1$, then $\dim (\mathfrak L^-(V)) = \infty$ $($resp. $ \dim (\mathfrak L(V)) = \infty $$)$ $($ resp. $ \dim (\mathfrak B(V)) = \infty $$)$ if and only if $Δ(\mathfrak B(V)) $ is an arithmetic root system and the quantum numbers (i.e. the fixed parameters) of generalized Dynkin diagrams of $V$ are of finite order. Sufficient and necessary conditions for $m$-fold adjoint action in $\mathfrak B(V)$ equal to zero, viz. $\overline{l}_{x_{i}}^{m}[x_{j}]^ -=0$ for $x_i,~x_j\in \mathfrak B(V)$, are given.
We classify all groups G and all pairs (V,W) of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over G such that the support of the direct sum of V and W generates G, the square of the braiding between V and W is not the identity, and the Nichols algebra of the direct sum of V and W admits a finite root system. As a byproduct, we determine the dimensions of such Nichols algebras, and several new families of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras are obtained. Our main tool is the Weyl groupoid of pairs of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over groups.
We compute the finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over the sum of two simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules V and W over non-abelian quotients of a certain central extension of the dihedral group of eight elements or SL(2,3), and such that the Weyl groupoid of the pair (V,W) is finite. These central extensions appear in the classification of non-elementary finite-dimensional Nichols algebras with finite Weyl groupoid of rank two. We deduce new information on the structure of primitive elements of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over groups.
A technique is developed to reduce the investigation of Nichols algebras of integrable U_q(g)-modules to the investigation of Nichols algebras of braided vector spaces with diagonal braiding. The results are applied to obtain information on the Gelfan'd-Kirillov dimension of these Nichols algebras and their defining relations if the braiding is of a special type and q is not a root of unity. For simple g the cases of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension are determined completely.
We compute liftings of the Nichols algebra of a Yetter-Drinfeld module of Cartan type $B_2$ subject to the small restriction that the diagonal elements of the braiding matrix are primitive $n$th roots of 1 with odd $n\neq 5$. As well, we compute the liftings of a Nichols algebra of Cartan type $A_2$ if the diagonal elements of the braiding matrix are cube roots of 1; this case was not completely covered in previous work of Andruskiewitsch and Schneider. We study the problem of when the liftings of a given Nichols algebra are quasi-isomorphic. The Appendix (with I. Rutherford) contains a genera…
We study the Nichols algebra of a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld module and introduce new invariants such as real roots. The crucial ingredient is a `reflection' in the class of such Nichols algebras. We conclude the classifications of finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras over S_3, and of finite-dimensional Nichols algebras over S_4. The revised version contains an extended introduction with references to recent applications, and a simplified definition of the Weyl groupoid of a semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld module. Let $V$ be a braided vector space of diagonal type. Let $\mathfrak B(V)$, $\mathfrak L^-(V)$ and $\mathfrak L(V)$ be the Nichols algebra, Nichols Lie algebra and Nichols braided Lie algebra over $V$, respectively. We show that a monomial belongs to $\mathfrak L(V)$ if and only if that this monomial is connected. We obtain the basis for $\mathfrak L(V)$ of arithmetic root systems and the dimension for $\mathfrak L(V)$ of finite Cartan type. We give the sufficient and necessary conditions for $\mathfrak B(V) = F\oplus \mathfrak L^-(V)$ and $\mathfrak L^-(V)= \mathfrak L(V)$. We obtain an explici…
We classify all non-abelian groups G such that there exists a pair (V,W) of absolutely simple Yetter-Drinfeld modules over G such that the Nichols algebra of the direct sum of V and W is finite-dimensional under two assumptions: the square of the braiding between V and W is not the identity, and G is generated by the support of V and W. As a corollary, we prove that the dimensions of such V and W are at most six. As a tool we use the Weyl groupoid of (V,W).
The theory of Nichols algebras of diagonal type is known to be closely related to that of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper the connection between both theories is made closer. For any Nichols algebra of diagonal type invertible transformations are introduced, which remind one of the action of the Weyl group on the root system associated to a semisimple Lie algebra. They give rise to the definition of a Brandt groupoid. As an application an alternative proof of classification results of Rosso, Andruskiewitsch, and Schneider is obtained without using any technical assumptions on the braidi…
This is a survey on Nichols algebras of diagonal type with finite dimension, or more generally with arithmetic root system. The knowledge of these algebras is the cornerstone of the classification program of pointed Hopf algebras with finite dimension, or finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension; and their structure should be indispensable for the understanding of the representation theory, the computation of the various cohomologies, and many other aspects of finite dimensional pointed Hopf algebras. These Nichols algebras were classified in [H-classif RS] as a notable application of the notions of …
The Nichols algebras of diagonal type with finite root system are either of standard, super or (yet) unidentified type. A concrete description of the defining relations of all those Nichols algebras was given in \cite{A-exp presentation}. In the present paper we use this result to give an explicit presentation of all Nichols algebras of unidentified type.
We give an explicit and essentially minimal list of defining relations of a Nichols algebra of diagonal type with finite root system. This list contains the well-known quantum Serre relations but also many new variations. A conjecture by Andruskiewitsch and Schneider states that any finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is generated as an algebra by its group-like and skew-primitive elements. As an application of our main result, we prove the conjecture when the group of group-like elements is abelian.
It was conjectured in \texttt{\small arXiv:1606.02521} that a Nichols algebra of diagonal type with finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension has finite (generalized) root system. We prove the conjecture assuming that the rank is 2. We also show that a Nichols algebra of affine Cartan type has infinite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension.
We contribute to the classification of Hopf algebras with finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, $\operatorname{GKdim}$ for short, through the study of Nichols algebras over abelian groups. We deal first with braided vector spaces over $\mathbb Z$ with the generator acting as a single Jordan block and show that the corresponding Nichols algebra has finite $\operatorname{GKdim}$ if and only if the size of the block is 2 and the eigenvalue is $\pm 1$; when this is 1, we recover the quantum Jordan plane. We consider next a class of braided vector spaces that are direct sums of blocks and points that …
We construct reflection functors for Yetter-Drinfeld modules over Nichols systems and discuss their fundamental properties. We will obtain properties about the geometry of the support of Nichols systems and their Yetter-Drinfeld modules, by looking at iterated reflections. We will also study the maximal subobject of Yetter-Drinfeld modules over Nichols systems and find a special morphism, that we name Shapovalov morphism, whose kernel coincides with this maximal subobject. Moreover, we will use this morphism to characterize properties about the reflections of the Yetter-Drinfeld modules. We ca…
This paper contributes to the proof of the conjecture posed in arXiv:1606.02521, stating that a Nichols algebra of diagonal type with finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension has finite (generalized) root system. We prove the conjecture assuming that the rank is 3 or that the braiding is of Cartan type.
We study graded right coideal subalgebras of Nichols algebras of semisimple Yetter-Drinfeld modules. Assuming that the Yetter-Drinfeld module admits all reflections and the Nichols algebra is decomposable, we construct an injective order preserving and order reflecting map between morphisms of the Weyl groupoid and graded right coideal subalgebras of the Nichols algebra. Here morphisms are ordered with respect to right Duflo order and right coideal subalgebras are ordered with respect to inclusion. If the Weyl groupoid is finite, then we prove that the Nichols algebra is decomposable and the a…
Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system with root system $R$ and with set of positive roots $R^+$. For $α\in R$, $v,w\in W$, we denote by $\partial_α$, $\partial_w$ and $\partial_{w/v}$ the divided difference operators and skew divided difference operators acting on the coinvariant algebra of $W$. Generalizing the work of Liu, we prove that $\partial_{w/v}$ can be written as a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients in $\partial_α$ where $α\in R^+$. In fact, we prove the stronger and analogous statement in the Nichols-Woronowicz algebra model for Schubert calculus on $W$ after Bazlov. We draw …
In the structure theory of quantized enveloping algebras, the algebra isomorphisms determined by Lusztig led to the first general construction of PBW bases of these algebras. Also, they have important applications to the representation theory of these and related algebras. In the present paper the Drinfel'd double for a class of graded Hopf algebras is investigated. Various quantum algebras, including multiparameter quantizations of semisimple Lie algebras and of Lie superalgebras, are covered by the given definition. For these Drinfel'd doubles Lusztig maps are defined. It is shown that these…
We formally define and study the distinguished pre-Nichols algebra $\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(V)$ of a braided vector space of diagonal type $V$ with finite-dimensional Nichols algebra $\mathcal{B}(V)$. The algebra $\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(V)$ is presented by fewer relations than $\mathcal{B}(V)$, so it is intermediate between the tensor algebra $T(V)$ and $\mathcal{B}(V)$. Prominent examples of distinguished pre-Nichols algebras are the positive parts of quantized enveloping (super)algebras and their multiparametric versions. We prove that these algebras give rise to new examples of Noetherian …
After the classification of the finite-dimensional Nichols algebras of diagonal type arXiv:math/0411477, arXiv:math/0605795, the determination of its defining relations arXiv:1008.4144, arXiv:1104.0268, and the verification of the generation in degree one conjecture arXiv:1104.0268, there is still one step missing in the classification of complex finite-dimensional Hopf algebras with abelian group, without restrictions on the order of the latter: the computation of all deformations or liftings. A technique towards solving this question was developed in arXiv:1212.5279, built on cocycle deforma…
We discuss the relationship between Hopf superalgebras and Hopf algebras. We list the braided vector spaces of diagonal type with generalized root system of super type and give the defining relations of the corresponding Nichols algebras.
We construct symmetric pairs for Drinfeld doubles of pre-Nichols algebras of diagonal type and determine when they possess an Iwasawa decomposition. This extends G. Letzter's theory of quantum symmetric pairs. Our results can be uniformly applied to Kac-Moody quantum groups for a generic quantum parameter, for roots of unity in respect to both big and small quantum groups, to quantum supergroups and to exotic quantum groups of ufo type. We give a second construction of symmetric pairs for Heisenberg doubles in the above generality and prove that they always admit an Iwasawa decomposition. For …
We construct all projective modules of the restricted quantum group $\bar{U}_q s\ell(2|1)$ at an even, $2p$th, root of unity. This $64p^4$-dimensional Hopf algebra is a common double bosonization, $B(X^*)\otimes B(X)\otimes H$, of two rank-2 Nichols algebras $B(X)$ with fermionic generator(s), with $H=Z_{2p}\otimes Z_{2p}$. The category of $\bar{U}_q s\ell(2|1)$-modules is equivalent to the category of Yetter--Drinfeld $B(X)$-modules in $C_ρ={}^H_H\!YD$, where coaction is defined by a universal $R$-matrix $ρ$. As an application of the projective module construction, we find the associative alg…
The root systems appearing in the theory of Lie superalgebras and Nichols algebras admit a large symmetry extending properly the one coming from the Weyl group. Based on this observation we set up a general framework in which the symmetry object is a groupoid. We prove that in our context the groupoid is generated by reflections and Coxeter relations. This answers a question of Serganova. Our weak version of the exchange condition allows us to prove Matsumoto's theorem. Therefore the word problem is solved for the groupoid.
We continue our study of Cartan schemes and their Weyl groupoids. The results in this paper provide an algorithm to determine connected simply connected Cartan schemes of rank three, where the real roots form a finite irreducible root system. The algorithm terminates: Up to equivalence there are exactly 55 such Cartan schemes, and the number of corresponding real roots varies between 6 and 37. We identify those Weyl groupoids which appear in the classification of Nichols algebras of diagonal type.
The Shapovalov determinant for a class of pointed Hopf algebras is calculated, including quantized enveloping algebras, Lusztig's small quantum groups, and quantized Lie superalgebras. Our main tools are root systems, Weyl groupoids, and Lusztig type isomorphisms. We elaborate powerful novel techniques for the algebras at roots of unity, and pass to the general case using a density argument. We relate shuffle algebras, as defined by Nichols, Feigin-Odesskii and Rosso, to perverse sheaves on symmetric products of the complex line (i.e., on the spaces of monic polynomials stratified by multiplicities of roots). More precisely, we construct an equivalence between: (i) Braided Hopf algebras of a certain type. (ii) Factorizable collections of perverse sheaves on all the symmetric products. Under this eqiuvalence, the Nichols algebra associated to an object V corresponds to the collection of the intersection cohomology extensions of the local systems on the open configuration spaces ass…
For a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra and a root of unity, Lusztig defined an infinite dimensional quantum group of divided powers. Under certain restrictions on the order of the root of unity, he constructed a Frobenius homomorphism with finite dimensional Hopf kernel and with image the universal enveloping algebra. In this article we define and describe the Frobenius homomorphism for arbitrary roots of unity by systematically using the theory of Nichols algebras. In several new exceptional cases the Frobenius-Lusztig kernel is associated to a different Lie algebra than the initial …
We show that the cohomology ring of a finite-dimensional complex pointed Hopf algebra with an abelian group of group-like elements is finitely generated. Our strategy has three major steps. We first reduce the problem to the finite generation of cohomology of finite dimensional Nichols algebras of diagonal type. For the Nichols algebras we do a detailed analysis of cohomology via the Anick resolution reducing the problem further to specific combinatorial properties. Finally, to check these properties we turn to the classification of Nichols algebras of diagonal type due to Heckenberger. In thi…
We study subsets in possibly degenerate symplectic vector spaces over finite fields, which are stable under a given Coxeter/Weyl reflection group. These symplectic root systems provide crucial combinatorical data to classify finite-dimensional Nichols algebras for nilpotent groups G over the complex numbers [Len13a], where the symplectic form is given by the group's commutator map. For example, the degree of degeneracy of the symplectic root system determines the size of the center of G. In this article we classify symplectic root systems over the finite field F_2, where symplectic just means …
We name an indecomposable symmetrizable generalized Cartan matrix $A$ and the corresponding Kac--Moody Lie algebra ${\goth g} ^\prime (A)$ {\it of the arithmetic type} if for any $β\in Q$ with $(β| β)<0$ there exist $n(β)\in {\Bbb N}$ and an imaginary root $α\in Δ^{im}$ such that $n(β)β\equiv α\mod Ker\ (.|.)$ on $Q$. Here $Q$ is the root lattice. This generalizes "symmetrizable hyperbolic" type of Kac and Moody. We show that generalized Cartan matrices of the arithmetic type are divided in $4$ types: (a) finite, (b) affine, (c) rank two, and (d) arithmetic hyperbolic type. The last type is ve…
It was recently understood that from the point of view of automorphic Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras and some aspects of Mirror Symmetry, interesting hyperbolic root systems should have restricted arithmetic type and a generalized lattice Weyl vector. One can consider hyperbolic root systems with these properties as an appropriate hyperbolic analog of the classical finite and affine root systems. This series of papers is devoted to classification of hyperbolic root systems of restricted arithmetic type and with a generalized lattice Weyl vector $ρ$, having the rank 3 (it is the first non-trivia…
Here we prove classification results announced in Part I (alg-geom/9711032). We classify maximal hyperbolic root systems of the rank 3 having restricted arithmetic type and a generalized lattice Weyl vector $ρ$ with $ρ^2\ge 0$ (i.e. of elliptic or parabolic type). We give classification of all reflective of elliptic or parabolic type elementary hyperbolic lattices of the rank three. We apply the same method (narrow places of polyhedra) which was developed to prove finiteness results on reflective hyperbolic lattices. We also use some additional arithmetic arguments: studying of class numbers o…
This is a continuation of our "Lecture on Kac--Moody Lie algebras of the arithmetic type" \cite{25}. We consider hyperbolic (i.e. signature $(n,1)$) integral symmetric bilinear form $S:M\times M \to {\Bbb Z}$ (i.e. hyperbolic lattice), reflection group $W\subset W(S)$, fundamental polyhedron $\Cal M$ of $W$ and an acceptable (corresponding to twisting coefficients) set $P({\Cal M})\subset M$ of vectors orthogonal to faces of $\Cal M$ (simple roots). One can construct the corresponding Lorentzian Kac--Moody Lie algebra ${\goth g}={\goth g}^{\prime\prime}(A(S,W,P({\Cal M})))$ which is graded by …
