After a summary on module algebra actions of C^*-weak Hopf algebras we outline the proof of a reconstruction theorem stating that every finite index depth 2 inclusion N < M of unital C^*-algebras with finite dimensional centers is isomorphic to the invariant subalgebra inclusion M^A < M with respect to a regular weak Hopf algebra action. The proof uses the language of C^*-2-categories.
We develop intrinsic tools for computing the periodic Hopf cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras related to transverse symmetry in codimension 1. Besides the Hopf algebra found by Connes and the first author in their work on the local index formula for transversely hypoelliptic operators on foliations, this family includes its `Schwarzian' quotient, on which the Rankin-Cohen universal deformation formula is based, the extended Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra related to renormalization of divergences in QFT, as well as a series of cyclic coverings of these Hopf algebras, motivated by the treatment of …
We apply the theory of finite dimensional weak C^*-Hopf algebras A as developed by G. Böhm, F. Nill and K. Szlachányi to study reducible inclusion triples of von-Neumann algebras N \subset M \subset (M\cros\A). Here M is an A-module algebra, N is the fixed point algebra and \M\cros\A is the crossed product extension. ``Weak'' means that the coproduct Δon A is non-unital, requiring various modifications of the standard definitions for (co-)actions and crossed products. We show that acting with normalized positive and nondegenerate left integrals l\in\A gives rise to faithful conditional expecta…
Bialgebroids, separable bialgebroids, and weak Hopf algebras are compared from a categorical point of view. Then properties of weak Hopf algebras and their applications to finite index and finite depth inclusions of von Neumann algebras are shortly reviewed. A hint is given at a duality between bialgebroid actions and abstract inclusions in 2-categories.
We review the combinatorial structure of perturbative quantum field theory with emphasis given to the decomposition of graphs into primitive ones. The consequences in terms of unique factorization of Dyson--Schwinger equations into Euler products are discussed.
The article is devoted to the describtion of quasitriangular structures (universal R-matrices) on cocommutative Hopf algebras. It is known that such structures are concentrated on finite dimensional Hopf subalgebras. In particular, quasitriangular structure on group algebra is defined by the pairs of normal inclusions of an finite abelian group and by invariant bimultiplicative form on it. The structure is triangular in the case of coinciding inclusions and skewsymmetric form. The nonstandart $λ$-structure on the representation ring of finite group, corresponding to the triangular structure on…
Weak C* Hopf algebras can act as global symmetries in low-dimensional quantum field theories, when braid group statistics prevents group symmetries. Possibilities to construct field algebras with weak C* Hopf symmetry from a given theory of local observables are discussed.
For a finite dimensional Hopf algebra we show that an associated natural inclusion of infinite crossed products is the crossed product by the Drinfeld double, and that this is a characterisation of the double.
We study infinitesimal gauge transformations of an equivariant noncommutative principal bundle as a braided Lie algebra of derivations. For this, we analyse general $K$-braided Hopf and Lie algebras, for $K$ a (quasi)triangular Hopf algebra of symmetries, and study their representations as braided derivations. We then study Drinfeld twist deformations of braided Hopf algebras and of Lie algebras of infinitesimal gauge transformations. We give examples coming from deformations of abelian and Jordanian type. In particular we explicitly describe the braided Lie algebra of gauge transformations of…
Pursuing a generalization of group symmetries of modular categories to category symmetries in topological phases of matter, we study linear Hopf monads. The main goal is a generalization of extension and gauging group symmetries to category symmetries of modular categories, which include also categorical Hopf algebras as special cases. As an application, we propose an analogue of the classification of finite simple groups to modular categories, where we define simple modular categories as the prime ones without any nontrivial normal algebras.
If A is a weak C^*-Hopf algebra then the category of finite dimensional unitary representations of A is a monoidal C^*-category with monoidal unit being the GNS representation D_eps associated to the counit \eps. This category has isomorphic left dual and right dual objects which leads, as usual, to the notion of dimension function. However, if \eps is not pure the dimension function is matrix valued with rows and columns labelled by the irreducibles contained in D_eps. This happens precisely when the inclusions A^L < A and A^R < A are not connected. Still there exists a trace on A which is th…
We define motivic iterated integrals on the affine line, and give a simple proof of the formula for the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of they make. We show that it encodes the group law in the automorphism group of certain non-commutative variety. We relate the coproduct with the coproduct in the Hopf algebra of decorated rooted planar trivalent trees - a planar decorated version of the Hopf algebra defined by Connes and Kreimer. As an application we derive explicit formulas for the coproduct in the motivic multiple polylogarithm Hopf algebra. We give a criteria for a motivic iterated integral…
A pseudo-Galois extension is shown to be a depth two extension. Studying its left bialgebroid, we construct an enveloping Hopf algebroid for the semi-direct product of groups, or more generally involutive Hopf algebras, and their module algebras. It is a type of cofibered sum of two inclusions of the Hopf algebra into the semi-direct product and its derived right crossed product. Van Oystaeyen and Panaite observe that this Hopf algebroid is non-trivially isomorphic to a Connes-Moscovici Hopf algebroid, which raises interesting comparative questions.
Symmetries of trigonometric integrable two dimensional statistical face models are considered. The corresponding symmetry operators on the Hilbert space of states of the quantum version of these models define a weak *-Hopf algebra isomorphic to the Ocneanu double triangle algebra.
Let $D(H)$ be the quantum double associated to a finite dimensional quasi-Hopf algebra $H$. In this note, we first generalize a result of Majid, stating that a finite dimensional Hopf algebra $H$ is quasitriangular if and only if there is a projection of the quantum double $D(H)$ onto $H$ covering the natural inclusion. We then prove that the quantum double of a finite dimensional quasitriangular quasi-Hopf algebra is a biproduct.
We give functorial recipes to get, out of any Hopf algebra over a field, two pairs of Hopf algebras which have some geometrical content. When the ground field has characteristic zero, the first pair is made by a function algebra over a connected Poisson group and a universal enveloping algebra over a Lie bialgebra. In addition, the Poisson group as a variety is an affine space, and the Lie bialgebra as a Lie algebra is graded. Forgetting these last details, the second pair is of the same type. When the Hopf algebra H we start from is already of geometric type the result involves Poisson dualit…
Let G be the group of all formal power series starting with x with coefficients in a field k of zero characteristic (with the composition product), and let F[G] be its function algebra. C. Brouder and A. Frabetti introduced a non-commutative, non-cocommutative graded Hopf algebra H, via a direct process of ``disabelianisation'' of F[G], i.e. taking the like presentation of the latter as an algebra but dropping the commutativity constraint. In this paper we apply a general method to provide four one-parameters deformations of H, which are quantum groups whose semiclassical limits are Poisson ge…
We characterize finite index depth 2 inclusions of type II_1 factors in terms of actions of weak Kac algebras and weak C*-Hopf algebras. If N\subset M \subset M_1 \subset M_2 \subset ... is the Jones tower constructed from such an inclusion N\subset M, then B=M^\prime \cap M_2 has a natural structure of a weak C*-Hopf algebra and there is a minimal action of B on M_1 such that M is the fixed point subalgebra of M_1, and M_2 is isomorphic to the crossed product of M_1 and B. This extends the well-known results for irreducible depth 2 inclusions.
The concept of quantum commutativity with respect to an action or coaction of a given Hopf algebra is used for the algebraic description of a system of particles and their interaction with certain quantum field. Graded commutativity and particles in singular magnetic field are considered as a particular example of the general formalism. The corresponding statistics and generalized Pauli exclusion principle are also mentioned.
In the paper we introduce the notion of twisted derivation of a bialgebra. Twisted derivations appear as infinitesimal symmetries of the category of representations. More precisely they are infinitesimal versions of twisted automorphisms of bialgebras. Twisted derivations naturally form a Lie algebra (the tangent algebra of the group of twisted automorphisms). Moreover this Lie algebra fits into a crossed module (tangent to the crossed module of twisted automorphisms). Here we calculate this crossed module for universal enveloping algebras and for the Sweedler's Hopf algebra.
We analyse the symmetries underlying nonassociative deformations of geometry in non-geometric R-flux compactifications which arise via T-duality from closed strings with constant geometric fluxes. Starting from the non-abelian Lie algebra of translations and Bopp shifts in phase space, together with a suitable cochain twist, we construct the quasi-Hopf algebra of symmetries that deforms the algebra of functions and the exterior differential calculus in the phase space description of nonassociative R-space. In this setting nonassociativity is characterised by the associator 3-cocycle which cont…
Two non-standard quantum deformations of the (1+1) Schrödinger algebra are identified with the symmetry algebras of either a space or time uniform lattice discretization of the Schrödinger equation. For both cases, the deformation parameter of the corresponding Hopf algebra can be interpreted as the step of the lattice. In this context, the introduction of nonlinear maps defining Schrödinger and $sl(2,\R)$ quantum algebras with classical commutation rules turns out to be relevant. The problem of finding a quantum algebra linked to the full space-time discretization is also discussed.
We associate to each infinite primitive Lie pseudogroup a Hopf algebra of `transverse symmetries', by refining a procedure due to Connes and the first author in the case of the general pseudogroup. The affiliated Hopf algebra can be viewed as a `quantum group' counterpart of the infinite-dimensional primitive Lie algebra of the pseudogroup. It is first constructed via its action on the étale groupoid associated to the pseudogroup, and then realized as a bicrossed product of a universal enveloping algebra by a Hopf algebra of regular functions on a formal group. The bicrossed product structure …
We develop the theory of semisimple weak Hopf algebras and obtain analogues of a number of classical results for ordinary semisimple Hopf algebras. We prove a criterion for semisimplicity and analyze the square of the antipode S^2 of a semisimple weak Hopf algebra A. We explain how the Frobenius-Perron dimensions of irreducible A-modules and eigenvalues of S^2 can be computed using the inclusion matrix associated to A. A trace formula of Larson and Radford is extended to a relation between the global and Frobenius-Perron dimensions of A. Finally, an analogue of the Class Equation of Kac and Zh…
For a semisimple quasi-triangular Hopf algebra $\left( H,R\right) $ over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, and a strongly separable quantum commutative $H$-module algebra $A$ over which the Drinfeld element of $H$ acts trivially, we show that $A\#H$ is a weak Hopf algebra, and it can be embedded into a weak Hopf algebra $\operatorname{End}A^{\ast}\otimes H$. With these structure, $_{A\#H}\operatorname{Mod}$ is the monoidal category introduced by Cohen and Westreich, and $_{\operatorname{End}A^{\ast}\otimes H}\mathcal{M}$ is tensor equivalent to $_{H}\mathcal{M}$. If $A$ is in the M{ü}ger cen…
Loday and Ronco defined an interesting Hopf algebra structure on the linear span of the set of planar binary trees. They showed that the inclusion of the Hopf algebra of non-commutative symmetric functions in the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations factors through their Hopf algebra of trees, and these maps correspond to natural maps from the weak order on the symmetric group to the Tamari order on planar binary trees to the boolean algebra. We further study the structure of this Hopf algebra of trees using a new basis for it. We describe the product, coproduct, and antipode in t…
We classify 0-dimensional spectral triples over complex and real algebras and provide some general statements about their differential structure. We investigate also whether such spectral triples admit a symmetry arising from the Hopf algebra structure of the finite algebra. We discuss examples of commutative algebras and groups algebras.
In this paper, we study the phenomenon of Hopf or more specifically quantum double symmetry breaking. We devise a criterion for this type of symmetry breaking which is more general than the one existing in the literature, and therefore extends the number of possible breaking patterns that can be described consistently. We start by recalling why the extended symmetry notion of quantum double algebras is an optimal tool when analyzing a wide variety of two dimensional physical systems including quantum fluids, crystals and liquid crystals. The power of this approach stems from the fact that one …
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$ and let $A$ be a bialgebra or Hopf algebra such that $H$ is isomorphic to a sub-Hopf algebra of $A$ and there is an $H$-bilinear coalgebra projection $π$ from $A$ to $H$ which splits the inclusion. Then $A \cong R \#_ξH$ where $R$ is the pre-bialgebra of coinvariants. In this paper we study the deformations of $A$ by an $H$-bilinear cocycle. If $γ$ is a cocycle for $A$, then $γ$ can be restricted to a cocycle $γ_R$ for $R$, and $A^γ\cong R^{γ_R} \#_{ξ_γ} H$. As examples, we consider liftings of $\mathcal{B}(V) \# K[Γ]$ where $Γ$ …
Let $A \subseteq E$ be an extension of Hopf algebras such that there exists a normal left $A$-module coalgebra map $π: E \to A$ that splits the inclusion. We shall describe the set of all coquasitriangular structures on the Hopf algebra $E$ in terms of the datum $(A, E, π)$ as follows: first, any such extension $E$ is isomorphic to a unified product $A \ltimes H$, for some unitary subcoalgebra $H$ of $E$ (\cite{am2}). Then, as a main theorem, we establish a bijective correspondence between the set of all coquasitriangular structures on an arbitrary unified product $A \ltimes H$ and a certain s…
In the last decennia two generalizations of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions have appeared and shown themselves important, the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions NSymm and the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions QSymm. It has also become clear that it is important to understand the noncommutative versions of such important structures as Symm the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions. Not least because the right noncommmutative versions are often more beautiful than the commutaive ones (not all cluttered up with counting coefficients). NSymm and QSymm are not truly the…
By weakening the counit and antipode axioms of a C*-Hopf algebra and allowing for the coassociative coproduct to be non-unital we obtain a quantum group, that we call a weak C*-Hopf algebra, which is sufficiently general to describe the symmetries of essentially arbitrary fusion rules. This amounts to generalizing the Baaj-Skandalis multiplicative unitaries to multipicative partial isometries. Every weak C*-Hopf algebra has a dual which is again a weak C*-Hopf algebra. An explicit example is presented with Lee-Yang fusion rules. We shortly discuss applications to amalgamated crossed products, …
We prove that any action of a finite dimensional Hopf algebra H on a Weyl algebra A over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero factors through a group action. In other words, Weyl algebras do not admit genuine finite quantum symmetries. This improves a previous result by the authors, where the statement was established for semisimple H. The proof relies on a refinement of the method previously used: namely, considering reductions of the action of H on A modulo prime powers rather than primes. We also show that the result holds, more generally, for algebras of differential operat…
We calculate Frobenius-Schur indicator values for some fusion categories obtained from inclusions of finite groups $H\subset G$, where more concretely $G$ is symmetric or alternating, and $H$ is a symmetric, alternating or cyclic group. Our work is strongly related to earlier results by Kashina-Mason-Montgomery, Jedwab-Montgomery, and Timmer for bismash product Hopf algebras obtained from exact factorizations of groups. We can generalize some of their results, settle some open questions and offer shorter proofs; this already pertains to the Hopf algebra case, while our results also cover fusio…
Fuzzy spaces are obtained by quantizing adjoint orbits of compact semi-simple Lie groups. Fuzzy spheres emerge from quantizing S^2 and are associated with the group SU(2) in this manner. They are useful for regularizing quantum field theories and modeling spacetimes by non-commutative manifolds. We show that fuzzy spaces are Hopf algebras and in fact have more structure than the latter. They are thus candidates for quantum symmetries. Using their generalized Hopf algebraic structures, we can also model processes where one fuzzy space splits into several fuzzy spaces. For example we can discuss…
Quantum field theory allows more general symmetries than groups and Lie algebras. For instance quantum groups, that is Hopf algebras, have been familiar to theoretical physicists for a while now. Nowdays many examples of symmetries of categorical flavor -- categorical groups, groupoids, Lie algebroids and their higher analogues -- appear in physically motivated constructions and faciliate constructions of geometrically sound models and quantization of field theories. Here we consider two flavours of categorified symmetries: one coming from noncommutative algebraic geometry where varieties them…
Let H_T=C[T,T^{-1}] be the Hopf algebra of symmetries of a lattice of rank 1, or equivalently, H_T is the group algebra of a free Abelian group with one generator T. We construct conformal algebras, vertex Poisson algebras and vertex algebras with H_T as symmetry. For example, the Hamiltonian structure for the infinite Toda lattice gives rise to an H_T-vertex Poisson structure on a free difference algebra. Examples of H_T-vertex algebras are constructed from representations of a class of infinite dimensional Lie algebras related to H_T in the same way loop algebras are related to the Hopf alge…
The partition functions of a 2D conformal system - the modular invariant one or the generalized ones, coming from the introduction of defect lines - are expressed in terms of a set of coefficients that have the particularity to form nimreps of certain algebras. These coefficients define the various structure maps of a new class of Hopf Algebras, called Weak Hopf Algebras, and can be encoded in a set of graphs. The aim of chapter 1 is a presentation of the actual knowledge on this subject. In chapter 2 the Weak Hopf Algebra together with its structures is introduced, in particular the Ocneanu a…
Two new quantum anti-de Sitter so(4,2) and de Sitter so(5,1) algebras are presented. These deformations are called either time-type or space-type according to the dimensional properties of the deformation parameter. Their Hopf structure, universal R matrix and differential-difference realization are obtained in a unified setting by considering a contraction parameter related to the speed of light, which ensures a well defined non-relativistic limit. Such quantum algebras are shown to be symmetry algebras of either time or space discretizations of wave/Laplace equations on uniform lattices. The…
We study the four infinite families KA(n), KB(n), KD(n), KQ(n) of finite dimensional Hopf (in fact Kac) algebras constructed respectively by A. Masuoka and L. Vainerman: isomorphisms, automorphism groups, self-duality, lattices of coideal subalgebras. We reduce the study to KD(n) by proving that the others are isomorphic to KD(n), its dual, or an index 2 subalgebra of KD(2n). We derive many examples of lattices of intermediate subfactors of the inclusions of depth 2 associated to those Kac algebras, as well as the corresponding principal graphs, which is the original motivation. Along the way,…
Quantum duality principle is applied to study classical limits of quantum algebras and groups. For a certain type of Hopf algebras the explicit procedure to construct both classical limits is presented. The canonical forms of quantized Lie-bialgebras are proved to be two-parametric varieties with two classical limits called dual. When considered from the point of view of quantized symmetries such varieties can have boundaries that are noncommutative and noncocommutative. In this case the quantum duality and dual limits still exist while instead of Lie bialgebra one has a pair of tangent vector…
Given a finite dimensional C^*-Hopf algebra H and its dual H^ we construct the infinite crossed product A=... x H x H^ x H ... and study its superselection sectors in the framework of algebraic quantum field theory. A is the observable algebra of a generalized quantum spin chain with H-order and H^-disorder symmetries, where by a duality transformation the role of order and disorder may also appear interchanged. If H=\CC G is a group algebra then A becomes an ordinary G-spin model. We classify all DHR-sectors of A --- relative to some Haag dual vacuum representation --- and prove that their sy…
We study the symmetries of the N=1 exactly marginal deformations of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. For generic values of the parameters, these deformations are known to break the SU(3) part of the R-symmetry group down to a discrete subgroup. However, a closer look from the perspective of quantum groups reveals that the Lagrangian is in fact invariant under a certain Hopf algebra which is a non-standard quantum deformation of the algebra of functions on SU(3). Our discussion is motivated by the desire to better understand why these theories have significant differences from N=4 SYM regarding the…
