Let G and G' be monoidally equivalent compact quantum groups, and let H be a Hopf-Galois object realising a monoidal equivalence between these groups' representation categories. This monoidal equivalence induces an equivalence Chan(G) -> Chan(G'), where Chan(G) is the category whose objects are finite-dimensional C*-algebras with an action of G and whose morphisms are covariant channels. We show that, if the Hopf-Galois object H has a finite-dimensional *-representation, then channels related by this equivalence can simulate each other using a finite-dimensional entangled resource. We use this result to calculate the entanglement-assisted capacities of certain quantum channels.
We consider the entanglement manipulation capabilities of the universal covariant quantum cloner or quantum processor circuit for quantum bits. We investigate its use for cloning a member of a bipartite or a genuine tripartite entangled state of quantum bits. We find that for bipartite pure entangled states a nontrivial behavior of concurrence appears, while for GHZ entangled states a possibility of the partial extraction of bipartite entanglement can be achieved.
Quantum error correction and symmetries play central roles in quantum information science and physics. It is known that quantum error-correcting codes that obey (are covariant with respect to) continuous symmetries in a certain sense cannot correct erasure errors perfectly (a well-known result in this regard being the Eastin-Knill theorem in the context of fault-tolerant quantum computing), in contrast to the case without symmetry constraints. Furthermore, several quantitative fundamental limits on the accuracy of such covariant codes for approximate quantum error correction are known. Here, w…
The balanced partial entanglement (BPE) was observed to give the reflected entropy and the entanglement wedge cross-section (EWCS) for various mixed states in different theories \cite{Wen:2021qgx,Camargo:2022mme}. It can be calculated in different purifications, and is conjectured to be independent from purifications. In this paper we calculate the BPE and the EWCS in generic covariant scenarios in two-dimensional CFTs with and without gravitational anomalies, and find that they coincide with the reflected entropy. In covariant configurations we determine the partition for the purifying system…
We present a procedure inspired by dense coding, which enables a highly efficient transmission of information of a continuous nature. The procedure requires the sender and the recipient to share a maximally entangled state. We deal with the concrete problem of aligning reference frames or trihedra by means of a quantum system. We find the optimal covariant measurement and compute the corresponding average error, which has a remarkably simple close form. The connection of this procedure with that of estimating unitary transformations on qubits is briefly discussed.
Determining the measurement uncertainty region is a difficult problem for generic sets of observables. For this reason the literature on exact measurement uncertainty regions is focused on symmetric sets of observables, where the symmetries are used to simplify the calculation. We provide a framework to systematically exploit available symmetries, formulated in terms of covariance, to simplify problems of measurement uncertainty. Our key result is that for a wide range figures of merit the optimal compatible approximations of covariant target observables are themselves covariant. This substant…
Stabilizer states constitute a set of pure states which plays a dominant role in quantum error correction, measurement--based quantum computation, and quantum communication. Central in these applications are the local symmetries of these states. We characterize all local symmetries of arbitrary stabilizer states and provide an algorithm which determines them. We demonstrate the usefulness of these results by showing that the additional local symmetries find applications in entanglement theory and quantum error correction.
We study the power of dephasing-covariant operations in the resource theories of coherence and entanglement. These are quantum operations whose actions commute with a projective measurement. In the resource theory of coherence, we find that any two states are asymptotically interconvertible under dephasing-covariant operations. This provides a rare example of a resource theory in which asymptotic reversibility can be attained without needing the maximal set of resource non-generating operations. When extended to the resource theory of entanglement, the resultant operations share similarities w…
We compare some recent computations of the entanglement of formation in quantum information theory and of the entropy of a subalgebra in quantum ergodic theory. Both notions require optimization over decompositions of quantum states. We show that both functionals are strongly related for some highly symmetric density matrices. We discuss the presence of broken symmetries in relation with the structure of the optimal decompositions.
Symmetries of the initial state of a quantum system and the quantum channels, which simultaneously affect parts of the system, can significantly simplify the description of the entanglement evolution. Using concurrence as the entanglement measure, we study the entanglement evolution of few qubit systems, when each of the qubits is affected by a local channel independently of the others. We show that, for low-rank density matrices of the final quantum state, such complex entanglement dynamics can be completely described by a combination of independent factors representing the evolution of entan…
Envariance -- entanglement assisted invariance -- is a recently discovered symmetry of composite quantum systems. We show that thermodynamic equilibrium states are fully characterized by their envariance. In particular, the microcanonical equilibrium of a system $\mathcal{S} $ with Hamiltonian $H_\mathcal{S}$ is a fully energetically degenerate quantum state envariant under every unitary transformation. The representation of the canonical equilibrium then follows from simply counting degenerate energy states. Our conceptually novel approach is free of mathematically ambiguous notions such as e…
The structure of all completely positive quantum operations is investigated which transform pure two-qubit input states of a given degree of entanglement in a covariant way. Special cases thereof are quantum NOT operations which transform entangled pure two-qubit input states of a given degree of entanglement into orthogonal states in an optimal way. Based on our general analysis all covariant optimal two-qubit quantum NOT operations are determined. In particular, it is demonstrated that only in the case of maximally entangled input states these quantum NOT operations can be performed perfectl…
We obtain a formula for the determinant of a block Toeplitz matrix associated with a quadratic fermionic chain with complex coupling. Such couplings break reflection symmetry and/or charge conjugation symmetry. We then apply this formula to compute the Renyi entropy of a partial observation to a subsystem consisting of $X$ contiguous sites in the limit of large $X$. The present work generalizes similar results due to Its, Jin, Korepin and Its, Mezzadri, Mo. A striking new feature of our formula for the entanglement entropy is the appearance of a term scaling with the logarithm of the size of $…
Entanglement suppression in the strong interaction $S$-matrix is shown to be correlated with approximate spin-flavor symmetries that are observed in low-energy baryon interactions, the Wigner $SU(4)$ symmetry for two flavors and an $SU(16)$ symmetry for three flavors. We conjecture that dynamical entanglement suppression is a property of the strong interactions in the infrared, giving rise to these emergent symmetries and providing powerful constraints on the nature of nuclear and hypernuclear forces in dense matter.
We analyze entanglement in the family of translationally-invariant matrix product states (MPS). We give a criterion to determine when two states can be transformed into each other by SLOCC transformations, a central question in entanglement theory. We use that criterion to determine SLOCC classes, and explicitly carry out this classification for the simplest, non-trivial MPS. We also characterize all symmetries of MPS, both global and local (inhomogeneous). We illustrate our results with examples of states that are relevant in different physical contexts.
This is a short review on selected theory developments on Tensor Network (TN) states for strongly correlated systems. Specifically, we briefly review the effect of symmetries in TN states, fermionic TNs, the calculation of entanglement Hamiltonians from Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), and the relation between the Multi-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA) and the AdS/CFT or gauge/gravity duality. We stress the role played by entanglement in the emergence of several physical properties and objects through the TN language. Some recent results along these lines are also discus…
The authors of the recent paper [1] boldly claim to discover a new fully quantum approach to foundation of statistical mechanics: "Our conceptually novel approach is free of mathematically ambiguous notions such as probability, ensemble, randomness, etc." The aim of this note is to show that this approach is neither specific for quantum systems nor really conceptually different from the standard textbook arguments supporting microcanonical or canonical ensembles in statistical mechanics.
We demonstrate that linear combinations of subregion entropies with canceling boundary terms, commonly used to calculate the topological entanglement entropy, may suffer from spurious nontopological contributions even in models with zero correlation length. These spurious contributions are due to a specific kind of long-range string order, and persist throughout certain subsystem symmetry-protected phases. We introduce an entropic quantity that measures the presence of such order, and hence should serve as an order parameter for the aforementioned phases.
Pairs of pseudoscalar neutral mesons from decays of vector resonances are studied as bipartite systems in the framework of density operator. Time-dependent quantum entanglement is quantified in terms of the entanglement entropy and these dependences are demonstrated on data on correlated pairs of K and B mesons, as measured by the KLOE and Belle experiments . Another interesting characteristics of such bipartite systems are moments of the CP distributions. These moments are directly measurable and they appear to be very sensitive to the initial degree of entanglement of a pair.
Quantum entanglement obscures the notion of local operations; there exist quantum states for which all local actions on one subsystem can be equivalently realized by actions on another. We characterize the states for which this fundamental property of entanglement does and does not hold, including multipartite and mixed states. Our results lead to a method for quantifying entanglement based on operational symmetries and has connections to quantum steering, envariance, the Reeh-Schlieder theorem, and classical entanglement.
We describe the multisymplectic analysis of the constraints of first-order embedded submanifolds inherited from diffeomorphisms of the ambient manifold. The ambient diffeomorphism deformations of first-order embedded submanifolds are examined. We find that the covariant Noether currents, corresponding to the inherited ambient diffeomorphism symmetry, satisfy a non-Abelian deformation algebra, the structure functions being the Cartan structure functions on the ambient manifold. We define the covariant kinematical phase space of pseudoholomorphic embeddings (the symplectic 2-submanifolds of a sy…
Hypergraph states are multiqubit states whose combinatorial description and entanglement properties generalize the well-studied class of graph states. Graph states are important in applications such as measurement-based quantum computation and quantum error correction. The study of hypergraph states, with their richer multipartite entanglement and other nonlocal properties, has a promising outlook for new insight into multipartite entanglement. We present results analyzing local unitary symmetries of hypergraph states, including both continuous and discrete families of symmetries. In particula…
We investigate the relation between local unitary symmetries and entanglement invariants of multi-qubit systems. The Hilbert space of such systems can be stratified in terms of states with different types of symmetry. We review the connection between this stratification and the ring of entanglement invariants and the corresponding geometric description in terms of algebraic varieties. On a stratum of a non-trivial symmetry group the invariants of the symmetry preserving operations gives a sufficient description of entanglement. Finding these invariants is often a simpler problem than finding t…
Strong subadditivity goes beyond the tensored subsystem and commuting operator models. As previously noted by Petz and later by Araki and Moriya, two subalgebras of observables satisfy a generalized SSA-like inequality if they form a commuting square. We explore the interpretation and consequences in finite dimensions, connecting various entropic uncertainty relations for mutually unbiased bases with the positivity of a generalized conditional mutual information (CMI), and with inequalities on relative entropies of coherence and asymmetry. We obtain a bipartite resource theory of operations un…
Quantum error correction and symmetries play central roles in quantum information science and physics. It is known that quantum error-correcting codes covariant with respect to continuous symmetries cannot correct erasure errors perfectly (an important case being the Eastin-Knill theorem), in contrast to the case without symmetry constraints. Furthermore, there are fundamental limits on the accuracy of such covariant codes for approximate quantum error correction. Here, we consider the quantum error correction capability of random covariant codes. In particular, we show that $U(1)$-covariant c…
The covariant quantization of the electromagnetic field in the Lorentz gauge gives rise to longitudinal and scalar photons in addition to the usual transverse photons. It is shown here that the exchange of longitudinal and scalar photons can produce entanglement between two distant atoms or harmonic oscillators. The form of the entangled states produced in this way is very different from that obtained in the Coulomb gauge, where the longitudinal and scalar photons do not exist. A generalized gauge transformation is used to show that all physically observable effects are the same in the two gau…
Multiphoton quantum interference underpins fundamental tests of quantum mechanics and quantum technologies. Consequently, the detrimental effect of photon distinguishability in multiphoton interference experiments can be catastrophic. Here, we employ correlation measurements in the photonic inner modes, time or frequency, to restore quantum interference between photons differing in their colors or injection times in arbitrary linear optical networks, without the need for additional filtering or post selection. Interestingly, we demonstrate how harnessing the multiphoton inner-mode quantum info…
We study the bipartite entanglement of strongly correlated systems using exact diagonalization techniques. In particular, we examine how the entanglement changes in the presence of long-range interactions by studying the Pariser-Parr-Pople model with long-range interactions. We compare the results for this model with those obtained for the Hubbard and Heisenberg models with short-range interactions. This study helps us to understand why the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique is so successful even in the presence of long-range interactions. To better understand the behavior o…
Performances of the symmetric universal and phase-covariant cloning transformations and entanglement cloners -- qubit case -- are investigated when the initial state of the hardware or the original state to be cloned is weakly coupled to a thermal environment. Different behaviors of each of these transformations are analyzed and contrasted with the ideal cases.
Several families of states such as Werner states, Bell-diagonal states and Dicke states are useful to understand multipartite entanglement. Here we present a [2^(N+1)-1]-parameter family of N-qubit "X states" that embrace all those families, generalizing previously defined states for two qubits. We also present the algebra of the operators that characterize the states and an iterative construction for this algebra, a sub-algebra of su(2^(N)). We show how a variety of entanglement witnesses can detect entanglement in such states. Connections are also made to structures in projective geometry.
Quantum networks are promising tools for the implementation of long-range quantum communication. The characterization of quantum correlations in networks and their usefulness for information processing is therefore central for the progress of the field, but so far only results for small basic network structures or pure quantum states are known. Here we show that symmetries provide a versatile tool for the analysis of correlations in quantum networks. We provide an analytical approach to characterize correlations in large network structures with arbitrary topologies. As examples, we show that e…
We propose a covariant scheme for measuring entanglement on general hypersurfaces in relativistic quantum field theory. For that, we introduce an auxiliary relativistic field, 'the discretizer', that by locally interacting with the field along a hypersurface, fully swaps the field's and discretizer's states. It is shown, that the discretizer can be used to effectively cut-off the field's infinities, in a covariant fashion, and without having to introduce a spatial lattice. This, in turn, provides us an efficient way to evaluate entanglement between arbitrary regions on any hypersurface. As exa…
Strongly correlated analogues of topological insulators have been explored in systems with purely on-site symmetries, such as time-reversal or charge conservation. Here, we use recently developed tensor network tools to study a quantum state of interacting bosons which is featureless in the bulk, but distinguished from an atomic insulator in that it exhibits entanglement which is protected by its spatial symmetries. These properties are encoded in a model many-body wavefunction that describes a fully symmetric insulator of bosons on the honeycomb lattice at half filling per site. While the res…
