Multipartite entanglement, characterized by the quantum Fisher information (QFI), plays a central role in quantum-enhanced metrology and understanding quantum many-body physics. With a dynamical generalization of the Mazur-Suzuki relations, we provide a rigorous lower bound on the QFI for the thermal Gibbs states in terms of dynamical symmetries, i.e., operators with periodic time dependence. We demonstrate that this bound can be saturated when considering a complete set of dynamical symmetries. Moreover, this lower bound with dynamical symmetries can be generalized to the QFI matrix and to the QFI for the thermal pure states, predicted by the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Our results reveal a new perspective to detect multipartite entanglement and other generalized variances in an equilibrium system, from its nonstationary dynamical properties, and is promising for studying emergent nonequilibrium many-body physics.
We characterize metrologically useful multipartite entanglement by representing partitions with Young diagrams. We derive entanglement witnesses that are sensitive to the shape of Young diagrams and show that Dyson's rank acts as a resource for quantum metrology. Common quantifiers, such as the entanglement depth and $k$-separability are contained in this approach as the diagram's width and height. Our methods are experimentally accessible in a wide range of atomic systems, as we illustrate by analyzing published data on the quantum Fisher information and spin-squeezing coefficients.
The well known metrological linear squeezing parameters (such as quadrature or spin squeezing) efficiently quantify the sensitivity of Gaussian states. Yet, these parameters are insufficient to characterize the much wider class of highly sensitive non-Gaussian states. Here, we introduce a class of metrological nonlinear squeezing parameters obtained by analytical optimization of measurement observables among a given set of accessible (possibly nonlinear) operators. This allows for the metrological characterization of non-Gaussian quantum states of discrete and continuous variables. Our results…
We show how to verify the metrological usefulness of quantum states based on the expectation values of an arbitrarily chosen set of observables. In particular, we estimate the quantum Fisher information as a figure of merit of metrological usefulness. Our approach gives a tight lower bound on the quantum Fisher information for the given incomplete information. We apply our method to the results of various multiparticle quantum states prepared in experiments with photons and trapped ions, as well as to spin-squeezed states and Dicke states realized in cold gases. Our approach can be used for de…
Entanglement witnesses based on first and second moments exist in the form of spin-squeezing criteria for the detection of particle entanglement from collective measurements, and in form of modified uncertainty relations for the detection of mode entanglement or steering. By revealing a correspondence between them, we show that metrologically useful spin squeezing reveals multimode entanglement in symmetric spin states that are distributed into addressable modes. We further derive tight state-independent multipartite entanglement bounds on the spin-squeezing coefficient and point out their con…
The characterization of entanglement is a central problem for the study of quantum many-body dynamics. Here, we propose the quantum Fisher information as a useful tool for the study of multipartite-entanglement dynamics in many-body systems. We illustrate this by considering the regular-to-ergodic transition in the Dicke model---a fully-connected spin model showing quantum thermalization above a critical interaction strength. We show that the QFI has a rich dynamical behavior which drastically changes across the transition. In particular, the asymptotic value of the QFI, as well as its charact…
Understanding the distribution of quantum entanglement over many parties is a fundamental challenge of quantum physics and is of practical relevance for several applications in the field of quantum information. Here we use methods from quantum metrology to microscopically characterize the entanglement structure of multimode continuous-variable states in all possible multi-partitions and in all reduced distributions. From experimentally measured covariance matrices of Gaussian states with 2, 3, and 4 photonic modes with controllable losses, we extract the metrological sensitivity as well as an …
Multipartite entangled states are significant resources for both quantum information processing and quantum metrology. In particular, non-Gaussian entangled states are predicted to achieve a higher sensitivity of precision measurements than Gaussian states. On the basis of metrological sensitivity, the conventional linear Ramsey squeezing parameter (RSP) efficiently characterises the Gaussian entangled atomic states but fails for much wider classes of highly sensitive non-Gaussian states. These complex non-Gaussian entangled states can be classified by the nonlinear squeezing parameter (NLSP),…
Very recently, strongly non-Gaussian states have been observed via a direct three-mode spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a superconducting cavity [Phys. Rev. X 10, 011011 (2020)]. The created multi-photon non-Gaussian correlations are attractive and useful for various quantum information tasks. However, how to detect and classify multipartite non-Gaussian entanglement has not yet been completely understood. Here, we present an experimentally practical method to characterize continuous-variable multipartite non-Gaussian entanglement, by introducing a class of nonlinear squeezing paramet…
We discuss how to calculate genuine multipartite quantum and classical correlations in symmetric, spatially invariant, mixed $n$-qubit density matrices. We show that the existence of symmetries greatly reduces the amount of free parameters to be optimized in order to find the optimal measurement that minimizes the conditional entropy in the discord calculation. We apply this approach to the states exhibited dynamically during a thermodynamic protocol to extract maximum work. We also apply the symmetry criterion to a wide class of physically relevant cases of spatially homogeneous noise over mu…

The question whether two indistinguishable particles are bosons or fermions can be answered by observing the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect on a beam splitter. However, already for three particles one can consider symmetries that are neither bosonic nor fermionic. In this work, we describe a simple method of identifying them experimentally and propose a measure of a genuine multipartite indistinguishability.
We investigate the intermediate permutational symmetries of a system of qubits, that lie in between the perfect symmetric and antisymmetric cases. We prove that, on average, pure states of qubits picked at random with respect to the uniform measure on the unit sphere of the Hilbert space are almost as antisymmetric as they are allowed to be. We then observe that multipartite entanglement, measured by the generalized Meyer- Wallach measure, tends to be larger in subspaces that are more antisymmetric than the complete symmetric one. Eventually, we prove that all states contained in the most anti…

The quantum Fisher information (QFI) of certain multipartite entangled quantum states is larger than what is reachable by separable states, providing a metrological advantage. Are these nonclassical correlations strong enough to potentially violate a Bell inequality? Here, we present evidence from two examples. First, we discuss a Bell inequality designed for spin-squeezed states which is violated only by quantum states with a large QFI. Second, we relax a well-known lower bound on the QFI to find the Mermin Bell inequality as a special case. However, a fully general link between QFI and Bell …
Although entanglement is a key resource for quantum-enhanced metrology, not all entanglement is useful. For example in the process of many-body thermalisation, bipartite entanglement grows rapidly, naturally saturating to a volume law. This type of entanglement generation is ubiquitous in nature but has no known application in most quantum technologies. The generation, stabilisation and exploitation of genuine multipartite entanglement, on the other hand, is far more elusive yet highly desirable for metrological applications. Recently it has been shown that quantum many-body scars can have ext…
Central in entanglement theory is the characterization of local transformations among pure multipartite states. As a first step towards such a characterization, one needs to identify those states which can be transformed into each other via local operations with a non-vanishing probability. The classes obtained in this way are called SLOCC classes. They can be categorized into three disjoint types: the null-cone, the polystable states and strictly semistable states. Whereas the former two are well characterized, not much is known about strictly semistable states. We derive a criterion for the …
The quantum Fisher information (QFI) represents a fundamental concept in quantum physics. On the one hand, it quantifies the metrological potential of quantum states in quantum-parameter-estimation measurements. On the other hand, it is intrinsically related to the quantum geometry and multipartite entanglement of many-body systems. Here, we explore how the QFI can be estimated via randomized measurements, an approach which has the advantage of being applicable to both pure and mixed quantum states. In the latter case, our method gives access to the sub-quantum Fisher information, which sets a…
Multiphoton quantum interference underpins fundamental tests of quantum mechanics and quantum technologies. Consequently, the detrimental effect of photon distinguishability in multiphoton interference experiments can be catastrophic. Here, we employ correlation measurements in the photonic inner modes, time or frequency, to restore quantum interference between photons differing in their colors or injection times in arbitrary linear optical networks, without the need for additional filtering or post selection. Interestingly, we demonstrate how harnessing the multiphoton inner-mode quantum info…
Quantum entanglement obscures the notion of local operations; there exist quantum states for which all local actions on one subsystem can be equivalently realized by actions on another. We characterize the states for which this fundamental property of entanglement does and does not hold, including multipartite and mixed states. Our results lead to a method for quantifying entanglement based on operational symmetries and has connections to quantum steering, envariance, the Reeh-Schlieder theorem, and classical entanglement.
We describe a method to analyze and decompose the dynamics of a control system on a Lie group subject to symmetries. The method is based on the concept of generalized Young symmetrizers of representation theory. It naturally applies to the situation where the system evolves on a tensor product space and there exists a finite group of symmetries for the dynamics which interchanges the various factors. This is the case for quantum mechanical multipartite systems, such as spin networks, where each factor of the tensor product represents the state of one of the component systems. We present severa…

The von Neumann entropy plays a vital role in quantum information theory. The von Neumann entropy determines, e.g., the capacities of quantum channels. Also, entropies of composite quantum systems are important for future quantum networks, and their characterization is related to the quantum marginal problem. Furthermore, they play a role in quantum thermodynamics. In this thesis the set of quantum entropies of multipartite quantum systems is studied. The problem of its characterization is not new -- however, progress has been sparse, indicating that the problem might be hard and that new meth…
We have explained and comprehensively illustrated in Part I that the generalized Pauli constraints suggest a natural extension of the concept of active spaces. In the present Part II, we provide rigorous derivations of the theorems involved therein. This will offer in particular deeper insights into the underlying mathematical structure and will explain why the saturation of generalized Pauli constraints implies a specific simplified structure of the corresponding many-fermion quantum state. Moreover, we extend the results of Part I to non-fermionic multipartite quantum systems, revealing that…
Permutation symmetries of multipartite quantum states are defined only when the constituent subsystems are of equal dimensions. In this work we extend this notion of permutation symmetry to heterogeneous systems, that is, systems composed of subsystems having unequal dimensions. Given a tensor product space of $k$ subsystems (of arbitrary dimensions) and a permutation operation $σ$ over $k$ symbols, these states are such that they have identical decompositions (up to an overall phase) in the given tensor product space and the tensor product space obtained by the permuting the subsystems by $σ$…
