We study the four infinite families KA(n), KB(n), KD(n), KQ(n) of finite dimensional Hopf (in fact Kac) algebras constructed respectively by A. Masuoka and L. Vainerman: isomorphisms, automorphism groups, self-duality, lattices of coideal subalgebras. We reduce the study to KD(n) by proving that the others are isomorphic to KD(n), its dual, or an index 2 subalgebra of KD(2n). We derive many examples of lattices of intermediate subfactors of the inclusions of depth 2 associated to those Kac algebras, as well as the corresponding principal graphs, which is the original motivation.
Along the way, we extend some general results on the Galois correspondence for depth 2 inclusions, and develop some tools and algorithms for the study of twisted group algebras and their lattices of coideal subalgebras. This research was driven by heavy computer exploration, whose tools and methodology we further describe.
We construct inclusions of the form $(B_0\otimes P)^G\subset (B_1\otimes P)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on an inclusion of finite dimensional $\c^*$-algebras $B_0\subset B_1$ and on a $II_1$ factor $P$. Under suitable assumptions on the actions of $G$, this is a subfactor, whose Jones to er and standard invariant can be computed by using techniques of A. Wassermann. The subfactors associated to subgroups of compact groups, to projective representations of compact groups, to finite quantum groups, to finitely generated discrete groups, to vertex models and to spi…
We consider commuting squares of finite dimensional von Neumann algebras having the algebra of complex numbers in the lower left corner. Examples include the vertex models, the spin models (in the sense of subfactor theory) and the commuting squares associated to finite dimensional Kac algebras. To any such commuting square we associate a compact Kac algebra and we compute the corresponding subfactor and its standard invariant in terms of it.
In this paper, we introduce the notation of bi-shift of biprojections in subfactor theory to unimodular Kac algebras. We characterize the minimizers of Hirschman-Beckner uncertainty principle and Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle for unimodular Kac algebras with biprojections and prove Hardy's uncertainty principle in terms of minimizers.
We consider inclusions of type $(P\otimes A)^G\subset(P\otimes B)^G$, where $G$ is a compact quantum group of Kac type acting on a ${\rm II}_1$ factor $P$, and on a Markov inclusion of finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras $A\subset B$. In the case $[A,B]=0$, which basically covers all known examples, we show that the planar algebra of such a subfactor is of the form $P(A\subset B)^G$, with $G$ acting in some natural sense on the bipartite graph algebra $P(A\subset B)$.
We give a characterization of extremal irreducible discrete subfactors $(N\subseteq M, E)$ where $N$ is type ${\rm II}_1$ in terms of connected W*-algebra objects in rigid C*-tensor categories. We prove an equivalence of categories where the morphisms for discrete inclusions are normal $N-N$ bilinear ucp maps which preserve the state $τ\circ E$, and the morphisms for W*-algebra objects are categorical ucp morphisms. As an application, we get a well-behaved notion of the standard invariant of an extremal irreducible discrete subfactor, together with a subfactor reconstruction theorem. Thus our …
We show that indecomposable weak Kac algebras are free over their Cartan subalgebras and prove a duality theorem for their actions. Using this result, for any biconnected weak Kac algebra we construct a minimal action on the hyperfinite II_1 factor. The corresponding crossed product inclusion of II_1 factors has depth 2 and an integer index. Its first relative commutant is, in general, non-trivial, so we derive some arithmetic properties of weak Kac algebras from considering reduced subfactors.
We describe the subfactor planar algebra of an intermediate subfactor $N\subset Q \subset M$ of an extremal subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite Jones index which is not necessarily irreducible.
We introduce the notion of a crystal base of a finite dimensional q-deformed Kac module over the quantum superalgebra $U_q(\gl(m|n))$, and prove its existence and uniqueness. In particular, we obtain the crystal base of a finite dimensional irreducible $U_q(\gl(m|n))$-module with typical highest weight. We also show that the crystal base of a q-deformed Kac module is compatible with that of its irreducible quotient $V(λ)$ given by Benkart, Kang and Kashiwara when $V(λ)$ is an irreducible polynomial representation.
We construct new irreducible weight modules over quantum affine algebras of type I with all weight spaces infinite-dimensional. These modules are obtained by parabolic induction from irreducible modules over the Heisenberg subalgebra.
Let H and K be two finite groups with a properly outer action on the II_1 factor M. We prove that the group type inclusions $M^H \subset M \rtimes K$, studied earlier by Bisch and Haagerup, have property T in the sense of Popa if and only if the group generated by H and K in the outer automorphism group of M has Kazhdan's property T. This construction yields irreducible, infinite depth subfactors with small Jones indices and property T standard invariant.
We introduce the definition of the typical irreducible modules of the generalized quantum groups, and prove the Weyl-Kac-type formulas of their characters. As a by-product, we obtain the Weyl-Kac-type character formulas of the typical irreducible modules of the quantum superalgebras associated with the basic classical Lie superalgebras, which is explained in Introduction.
We classify irreducible II_1 subfactors A \subset B such that B \ominus A is reducible as an A-A bimodule, with index at most 6+1/5, leaving aside the composite subfactors at index exactly 6. Previous work has already achieved this up to index 3+\sqrt{5} \approx 5.23. We find there are exactly three such subfactors with index in (3+\sqrt{5}, 6+1/5], all with index 3+2\sqrt{2}. One of these comes from SO(3)_q at a root of unity, while the other two appear to be closely related, and are `braided up to a sign'.
We characterize finite index depth 2 inclusions of type II_1 factors in terms of actions of weak Kac algebras and weak C*-Hopf algebras. If N\subset M \subset M_1 \subset M_2 \subset ... is the Jones tower constructed from such an inclusion N\subset M, then B=M^\prime \cap M_2 has a natural structure of a weak C*-Hopf algebra and there is a minimal action of B on M_1 such that M is the fixed point subalgebra of M_1, and M_2 is isomorphic to the crossed product of M_1 and B. This extends the well-known results for irreducible depth 2 inclusions.
For a finite-index $\mathrm{II}_1$ subfactor $N \subset M$, we prove the existence of a universal Hopf $\ast$-algebra (or, a discrete quantum group in the analytic language) acting on $M$ in a trace-preserving fashion and fixing $N$ pointwise. We call this Hopf $\ast$-algebra the quantum Galois group for the subfactor and compute it in some examples of interest, notably for arbitrary irreducible finite-index depth-two subfactors. Along the way, we prove the existence of universal acting Hopf algebras for more general structures (tensors in enriched categories), in the spirit of recent work by …
Discrete subfactors include a particular class of infinite index subfactors and all finite index ones. A discrete subfactor is called local when it is braided and it fulfills a commutativity condition motivated by the study of inclusion of Quantum Field Theories in the algebraic Haag-Kastler setting. In [BDG21], we proved that every irreducible local discrete subfactor arises as the fixed point subfactor under the action of a canonical compact hypergroup. In this work, we prove a Galois correspondence between intermediate von Neumann algebras and closed subhypergroups, and we study the subfact…
We present a geometric construction of highest weight crystals for quantum generalized Kac-Moody algebras. It is given in terms of the irreducible components of certain Lagrangian subvarieties of Nakajima's quiver varieties associated to quivers with edge loops.
In this paper, we explicitly work out the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset Q)}$ for an intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ of an irreducible subfactor $N \subset M$ of finite index. We do this in terms of the subfactor planar algebra $P^{(N \subset M)}$ by showing that if $T$ is any planar tangle, the associated operator $Z^{(N \subset Q)}_T$ can be read off from $Z^{(N \subset M)}_T$ by a formula involving the so-called {\em biprojection} corresponding to the intermediate subfactor $N \subset Q \subset M$ and a scalar $α(T)$ carefully chosen so as to ensure that the formula …
We construct a new subfactor planar algebra, and as a corollary a new subfactor, with the `extended Haagerup' principal graph pair. This completes the classification of irreducible amenable subfactors with index in the range $(4,3+\sqrt{3})$, which was initiated by Haagerup in 1993. We prove that the subfactor planar algebra with these principal graphs is unique. We give a skein theoretic description, and a description as a subalgebra generated by a certain element in the graph planar algebra of its principal graph. In the skein theoretic description there is an explicit algorithm for evaluati…
We consider a type III subfactor $N\subset M$ of finite index with a finite system of braided $N$-$N$ morphisms which includes the irreducible constituents of the dual canonical endomorphism. We apply $α$-induction and, developing further some ideas of Ocneanu, we define chiral generators for the double triangle algebra. Using a new concept of intertwining braiding fusion relations, we show that the chiral generators can be naturally identified with the $α$-induced sectors. A matrix $Z$ is defined and shown to commute with the S- and T-matrices arising from the braiding. If the braiding is non…
This paper introduces the cyclic subfactors, generalizing the cyclic groups as the subfactors generalize the groups, and generalizing the natural numbers as the maximal subfactors generalize the prime numbers. On one hand, a theorem of O. Ore states that a finite group is cyclic if and only if its subgroups lattice is distributive, and on the other hand, every subgroup of a cyclic group is normal. Then, a subfactor planar algebra is called cyclic if all the biprojections are normal and form a distributive lattice. The main result shows in what sense a cyclic subfactor is singly generated, by g…
We give three applications of general theory about braided endomorphisms from conformal inclusions developed previously by us. The first is an example of subfactors associated with conformal inclusion whose dual fusion ring is non-commutative. In the second application we show that the Kac-Wakimoto hypothesis about certain relations between branching rules and S-matrices, which has existed for almost a decade, is not true in at least three examples. Finally we show that the fusion rings of subfactors associated with the conformal inclusions $SU(n)_{(n+2)}\subset SU(n(n+1)/2)$ and $SU(n+2)_n\su…
Ore proved that a finite group is cyclic if and only if its subgroup lattice is distributive. Now, since every subgroup of a cyclic group is normal, we call a subfactor planar algebra cyclic if all its biprojections are normal and form a distributive lattice. The main result generalizes one side of Ore's theorem and shows that a cyclic subfactor is singly generated in the sense that there is a minimal 2-box projection generating the identity biprojection. We conjecture that this result holds without assuming the biprojections to be normal, and we show that it is true for small lattices. We fin…
We show that given a rigid C*-tensor category, there is an equivalence of categories between normalized irreducible Q-systems, also known as connected unitary Frobenius algebra objects, and compact connected W*-algebra objects. Although this result could be proved as a corollary of our previous article on realizations of algebra objects and discrete subfactors, we prove it here directly via categorical methods without passing through subfactor theory.
In this paper we prove the Kazhdan-Lusztig type character formula for irreducible highest weight modules with positive rational highest weights over symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras.
We provide a geometric realization of the crystal $B(\infty)$ for quantum generalized Kac-Moody algebras in terms of the irreducible components of certain Lagrangian subvarieties in the representation spaces of a quiver.
We study the representations of the W-algebra W(g) associated to an arbitrary finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra g via the quantized Drinfeld-Sokolov reductions. The characters of irreducible representations with non-degenerate highest weights are expressed by Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. The irreduciblity conjecture of Frenkel, Kac and Wakimoto is proved completely for the "-" reduction and partially for the "+" reduction. In particular, the existence of the minimal series representations (= the modular invariant representations) of W(g) is proved.
The classical uncertainty principles deal with functions on abelian groups. In this paper, we discuss the uncertainty principles for finite index subfactors which include the cases for finite groups and finite dimensional Kac algebras. We prove the Hausdorff-Young inequality, Young's inequality, the Hirschman-Beckner uncertainty principle, the Donoho-Stark uncertainty principle. We characterize the minimizers of the uncertainty principles. We also prove that the minimizer is uniquely determined by the supports of itself and its Fourier transform. The proofs take the advantage of the analytic a…
We present an explicit character formula for the irreducible highest weight representations of the non-twisted affine Kac-Moody Lie algebra at the critical level which are integrable over the corresponding finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra.
For a dominant integral weight $lambda $, we introduce a family of $U_q ^+ (mathfrak{g})$-submodules $V_w (lambda)$ of the irreducible highest weight $U_q (mathfrak{g})$-module $V(lambda)$ of highest weight $lambda $ for a generalized Kac--Moody algebra $mathfrak{g}$. We prove that the module $V_w (lambda)$ is spanned by its global basis, and then give a character formula for $V_w (lambda)$, which generalizes the Demazure character formula for ordinary Kac--Moody algebras.
If B is C*-algebra of finite dimension n>3 then the finite dimensional irreducible representations of the compact quantum automorphism group of B, say G, have the same fusion rules as the ones of SO(3). As consequences, we get (1) a structure result for G in the case where B is a matrix algebra (2) if n>4 then the dual of G is not amenable (3) the fixed point subfactor P^G\subset (B\otimes P)^G has index n and principal graph A_\infty.
Let Uq(g) be the quantum affine superalgebra associated with an affine Kac-Moody superalgebra g which belongs to the three series osp(1|2n)^(1),sl(1|2n)^(2) and osp(2|2n)^(2). We develop vertex operator constructions for the level 1 irreducible integrable highest weight representations and classify the finite dimensional irreducible representations of Uq(g). This makes essential use of the Drinfeld realisation for Uq(g), and quantum correspondences between affine Kac-Moody superalgebras, developed in earlier papers.
This paper is a continuation of the series of papers "Quantization of Lie bialgebras (QLB) I-V". We show that the image of a Kac-Moody Lie bialgebra with the standard quasitriangular structure under the quantization functor defined in QLB-I,II is isomorphic to the Drinfeld-Jimbo quantization of this Lie bialgebra, with the standard quasitriangular structure. This implies that when the quantization parameter is formal, then the category O for the quantized Kac-Moody algebra is equivalent, as a braided tensor category, to the category O over the corresponding classical Kac-Moody algebra, with th…
We construct irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras over left ideals of the algebra of differential operators on the circle, through certain irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras of infinite matrices with finite number of nonzero entries. The structures of vertex algebras associated with the vaccum representations of these algebras are determined. Moreover, we prove that under certain conditions, the highest weight irreducible modules of centrally-extended classical Lie algebras of infinite matrices with finite number of nonzero entries naru…
The generalized Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for the finite dimensional irreducible representations of the general linear superalgebra are computed explicitly. Using the result we establish a one to one correspondence between the set of composition factors of an arbitrary $r$-fold atypical $gl_{m|n}$-Kac-module and the set of composition factors of some $r$-fold atypical $gl_{r|r}$-Kac-module. The result of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials is also applied to prove a conjectural character formula put forward by van der Jeugt et al in the late 80s. We simplify this character formula to cast it into th…
Using vertex operators, we construct explicitly Lusztig's $\mathbb Z[q, q^{-1}]$-lattice for the level one irreducible representations of quantum affine algebras of ADE type. We then realize the level one irreducible modules at roots of unity and show that the q-dimension is still given by the Weyl-Kac character formula. As a consequence we also answer the corresponding question of realizing the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras of simply laced type at level one in finite characteristic.
There studed correspondence between symplectic leaves, irreducible representations and prime ideals, which is invariant with respect to quantum adjoint action. The Conjecture of De Concini-Kac-Procesi on dimensions of irreducible representations is proved for sufficiently great $l$.
We show that the bases of irreducible integrable highest weight module of a non-symmetric Kac-Moody algebra, which is associated to a quiver with a nontrivial admissible automorphism, can be naturally identified with a set of certain invariant Langrangian irreducible subvarieties of certain varieties associated with the quiver defined by Nakajima. In the case of non-symmetric affine or finite Kac-Moody algebras, the bases can be naturally identified with a set of certain invariant Langrangian irreducible subvarieties of a particular deformation of singularities of the moduli space of instanton…
In this paper, the irreducible modules for the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-orbifold vertex operator subalgebra of the parafermion vertex operator algebra associated to the irreducible highest weight modules for the affine Kac-Moody algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ of level $k$ are classified and constructed.
We consider a generalization of the quiver varieties of Lusztig and Nakajima to the case of all symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras. To deal with the non-simply laced case one considers admissible automorphisms of a quiver and the irreducible components of the quiver varieties fixed by this automorphism. We define a crystal structure on these irreducible components and show that the crystals obtained are isomorphic to those associated to the crystal bases of the lower half of the universal enveloping algebra and the irreducible highest weight representations of the non-simply laced Kac-Moody …
First, we establish the relation between the associated varieties of modules over Kac-Moody algebras \hat{g} and those over affine W-algebras. Second, we prove the Feigin-Frenkel conjecture on the singular supports of G-integrable admissible representations. In fact we show that the associated variates of G-integrable admissible representations are irreducible G-invariant subvarieties of the nullcone of g, by determining them explicitly. Third, we prove the C_2-cofiniteness of a large number of simple W-algebras, including all minimal series principal W-algebras and the exceptional W-algebras …
Borcherds algebras represent a new class of Lie algebras which have almost all the properties that ordinary Kac-Moody algebras have, and the only major difference is that these generalized Kac-Moody algebras are allowed to have imaginary simple roots. The simplest nontrivial examples one can think of are those where one adds ``by hand'' one imaginary simple root to an ordinary Kac-Moody algebra. We study the fundamental representation of this class of examples and prove that an irreducible module is given by the full tensor algebra over some integrable highest weight module of the underlying K…
We study aspects of the theory of generalized Kac-Moody Lie algebras (or Borcherds algebras) and their standard modules. It is shown how such an algebra with no mutually orthogonal imaginary simple roots, including Borcherds' Monster Lie algebra $\frak m$, can be naturally constructed from a certain Kac-Moody subalgebra and a module for it. We observe that certain generalized Verma (induced) modules for generalized Kac-Moody algebras are standard modules and hence irreducible. In particular, starting from the moonshine module for the Monster group $M$, we construct a certain $\{frak gl}_2$- an…
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebra of rank 2, and set $λ=Λ_{1} - Λ_{2}$, where $Λ_{1}$, $Λ_{2}$ are the fundamental weights. Denote by $V(λ)$ the extremal weight module of extremal weight $λ$ with $v_λ$ the extremal weight vector, and by $\mathcal{B}(λ)$ the crystal basis of $V(λ)$ with $u_λ$ the element corresponding to $v_λ$. We prove that (i) $\mathcal{B}(λ)$ is connected, (ii) the subset $\mathcal{B}(λ)_μ$ of elements of weight $μ$ in $\mathcal{B}(λ)$ is a finite set for every integral weight $μ$, and $\mathcal{B}(λ)_λ = \{u_λ\}$, (iii) every extremal element in $\mathcal…
We consider the master functions associated with one irreducible integrable highest weight representation of a Kac-Moody algebra. We study the generation procedure of new critical points from a given critical point of one of these master functions. We show that all critical points of all these master functions can be generated from the critical point of the master function with no variables. In particular this means that the set of all critical points of all these master functions form a single population of critical points. We formulate a conjecture that the number of populations of critical …
Kashiwara and Saito have a geometric construction of the infinity crystal for any symmetric Kac-Moody algebra. The underlying set consists of the irreducible components of Lusztig's quiver varieties, which are varieties of nilpotent representations of a pre-projective algebra. We generalize this to symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras by replacing Lusztig's preprojective algebra with a more general one due to Dlab and Ringel. In non-symmetric types we are forced to work over non-algebraically-closed fields.
We show that a compact quantum group all whose irreducible representations have dimension bounded by a fixed constant must be of Kac type, in other words, its Haar measure is a trace. The proof is based on establishing several facts concerning operators related to modular properties of the Haar measure. In particular we study spectrum of these operators and the dimension of some of their eigenspaces in relation to the quantum dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation.
Representations of the non-semisimple superalgebra $gl(2|2)$ in the standard basis are investigated by means of the vector coherent state method and boson-fermion realization. All finite-dimensional irreducible typical and atypical representations and lowest weight (indecomposable) Kac modules of $gl(2|2)$ are constructed explicitly through the explicit construction of all $gl(2)\oplus gl(2)$ particle states (multiplets) in terms of boson and fermion creation operators in the super-Fock space. This gives a unified and complete treatment of finite-dimensional representations of $gl(2|2)$ in exp…
The Weyl-Wigner correspondence prescription, which makes large use of Fourier duality, is reexamined from the point of view of Kac algebras, the most general background for noncommutative Fourier analysis allowing for that property. It is shown how the standard Kac structure has to be extended in order to accommodate the physical requirements. An Abelian and a symmetric projective Kac algebras are shown to provide, in close parallel to the standard case, a new dual framework and a well-defined notion of projective Fourier duality for the group of translations on the plane. The Weyl formula ari…
