Results on semi-ampleness in char $p>0$ have been deleted because the proof used an incorrect induction which assumed the connectedness of the boundary of $\mgn$ (false for $\bar{\M_{0,4}}$). The main results now apply without special assumptions in char $p>0$ (the description of $\Pic(\mgn)$ is the same as in char 0). Numerous minor corrections have been made. In this paper we study the ample cone of the moduli space $\mgn$ of stable $n$-pointed curves of genus $g$. Our motivating conjecture is that a divisor on $\mgn$ is ample iff it has positive intersection with all 1-dimensional strata (the components of the locus of curves with at least $3g+n-2$ nodes). This translates into a simple conjectural description of the cone by linear inequalities, and, as all the 1-strata are rational, includes the conjecture that the Mori cone is polyhedral and generated by rational curves. Our main result is that the conjecture holds iff it holds for $g=0$. More precisely, there is a natural finite map $r: \vmgn 0. 2g+n. \to \mgn$ whose image is the locus $\rgn$ of curves with all components rational. Any 1-strata either lies in $\rgn$ or is numerically equivalent to a family $E$ of elliptic tails and we show that a divisor $D$ is nef iff $D \cdot E \geq 0$ and $r^*(D)$ is nef. We also give results on contractions (i.e. morphisms with connected fibers to projective varieties) of $\mgn$ for $g \geq 1$ showing that any fibration factors through a tautological one (given by forgetting points) and that the exceptional locus of any birational contraction is contained in the boundary. Finally, by more ad-hoc arguments, we prove the nefness of certain special classes.
In an earlier work, we gave an Apollonian-like pictorial representation for the ample cone for a class of K3 surfaces. This raises a natural question: Does the Apollonian packing itself represent the ample cone for a K3 surface? In this note, we answer this question in the affirmative.
We study the cones of q-ample divisors on smooth complex varieties. In favourable cases, we identify a part where the closure of this cone and the nef cone have the same boundary. This is especially interesting for Fano (or almost Fano) varieties.
The goal of this work is to study positivity of subvarieties with nef normal bundle in the sense of intersection theory. After Ottem's work on ample subschemes, we introduce the notion of a nef subscheme, which generalizes the notion of a subvariety with nef normal bundle. We show that restriction of a pseudoeffective (resp. big) divisor to a nef subvariety is pseudoeffective (resp. big). We also show that ampleness and nefness are transitive properties. We define the weakly movable cone as the cone generated by the pushforward of cycle classes of nef subvarieties via proper surjective maps. T…
In the paper \cite{Lau16}, it was shown that the restriction of a pseudoeffective divisor $D$ to a subvariety $Y$ with nef normal bundle is pseudoeffective. Assuming the normal bundle is ample and that $D|_Y$ is not big, we prove that the numerical dimension of $D$ is bounded above by that of its restriction, i.e. $κ_σ(D)\leq κ_σ(D|_Y)$. The main motivation is to study the cycle classes of "positive" curves: we show that the cycle class of a curve with ample normal bundle lies in the interior of the cone of curves, and the cycle class of an ample curve lies in the interior of the cone of movab…
By using classical invariant theory, we reduce the $S_{n}$-invariant F-conjecture to a feasibility problem in polyhedral geometry. We show by computer that for $n \le 19$, every integral $S_{n}$-invariant F-nef divisor on the moduli space of genus zero stable pointed curves is semi-ample, over arbitrary characteristic. Furthermore, for $n \le 16$, we show that for every integral $S_{n}$-invariant nef (resp. ample) divisor $D$ on the moduli space, $2D$ is base-point-free (resp. very ample). As applications, we obtain the nef cone of the moduli space of stable curves without marked points, and t…
Let X be a smooth projective surface of irregularity 0. The Hilbert scheme of n points on X parameterizes zero-dimensional subschemes of X of length n. In this paper, we discuss general methods for studying the cone of ample divisors on the Hilbert scheme. We then use these techniques to compute the cone of ample divisors on the Hilbert scheme for several surfaces where the cone was previously unknown. Our examples include families of surfaces of general type and del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1. The methods rely on Bridgeland stability and the Positivity Lemma of Bayer and Macri.
Let $X = \mathbb{P}(E_1) \times_C \mathbb{P}(E_2)$ where $C$ is a smooth curve and let $E_1$, $E_2$ be vector bundles over $C$. In this paper, we extend the results in \cite{K-M-R} by computing the nef cone of $X$ without restriction on the rank or semistability of $E_1$ and $E_2$. We also study the Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on $X$. We calculate the Seshadri constants in some cases and give bounds in some of the remaining cases.
We consider the action of a semisimple subgroup $\hat G$ of a semisimple complex group $G$ on the flag variety $X=G/B$, and the linearizations of this action by line bundles $\mathcal L$ on $X$. The main result is an explicit description of the associated unstable locus in dependence of $\mathcal L$, as well as a combinatorial formula for its (co)dimension. We observe that the codimension is equal to 1 on the regular boundary of the $\hat G$-ample cone, and grows towards the interior in steps by 1, in a way that the line bundles with unstable locus of codimension $q$ form a convex polyhedral c…
On a weighted projective surface $\mathbb{P}(a,b,c)$ with $\min(a,b,c)\leq 4$, we compute lower bounds for the {\em effective threshold} of an ample divisor, in other words, the highest multiplicity a section of the divisor can have at a specified point. We expect that these bounds are close to being sharp. This translates into finding divisor classes on the blowup of $\mathbb{P}(a,b,c)$ that generate a cone contained in, and probably close to, the effective cone.
Let $H$ be the Hilbert scheme of curves in complex projective $3$-space, with $d\geq 3$ and genus $g \leq (d-2)^2/4$. A complete, explicit description of the cone of curves and the ample cone of $H$ is given. From this, partial results on the group $\mathop{Aut}(H)$ are deduced.
Given a log canonical pair $(X, Δ)$, we show that $K_X+Δ$ is nef assuming there is no non-constant map from the affine line with values in the open strata of the stratification induced by the non-klt locus of $(X, Δ)$. This implies a generalization of the Cone Theorem where each $K_X+Δ$-negative extremal ray is spanned by a rational curve that is the closure of a copy of the affine line contained in one of the open strata of $\mathrm{Nklt}(X, Δ)$. Moreover, we give a criterion of Nakai type to determine when under the above condition $K_X+Δ$ is ample and we prove some partial results in the ca…
