Ran proved that smooth codimension 2 varieties in ${\bf P}^{m+2}$ are $j$-normal if $(j+1)(3j-1)\le m-1$, in this paper we extend this result to small codimension projective varieties. Let $X$ be a r codimension subvariety of $\pro$, we prove that if the set $Σ_{(j+1)}$ of $(j+1)$-secants to $X$ through a generic external point is not empty, $2(r+1)j\leq m-r$ and $(j+1)((r+1)j-1)\leq m-1$ then $X$ is $j$-normal. If $X$ is given by the zero locus of a section of a rank $r$ vector bundle $E$ on $\pro$, we prove that $\textrm{deg} Σ_{j+1}=\frac{1}{(j+1)!}\prod_{i=0}^{j}c_{r}(E(-i))$. Moreover we get a new simple proof of Zak's theorem on linear normality if $m\ge 3r$. Finally we prove that if $c_{r}(N(-2))\neq 0$ and $6r\le m-4$ then $X$ is 2-normal.
We reduce the problem of the projective normality of polarized abelian varieties to check the rank of very explicit matrices. This allow us to prove some results on normal generation of primitive line bundles on abelian threefolds and fourfolds. We also give two situations where the projective normality always fails. Finally we make some conjecture.
We give a classification of embedded smooth projective varieties swept out by rational homogeneous varieties whose Picard number and codimension are one.
In this article we prove new results on projective normality and normal presentation of adjunction bundle associated to an ample and globally generated line bundle on higher dimensional smooth projective varieties with nef canonical bundle. As one of the consequences of the main theorem, we give bounds on very ampleness and projective normality of pluricanonical linear systems on varieties of general type in dimensions three, four and five. These improve known such results.
Regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties form an important family of subvarieties of the flag variety, which are often singular and sometimes not normal varieties. Like Schubert varieties, they contain distinguished points called permutation flags. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization for a permutation flag of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety to be a singular point. We also apply this result to characterize regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties which are normal algebraic varieties.
In this paper, we show that the secant variety to a smooth projective variety embedded by a sufficiently positive line bundle is normal. As an application, we deduce that the secant variety to a general canonical curve of genus at least 7 is normal.
We prove some results on effective very ampleness and projective normality for some varieties with trivial canonical bundle. In the first part we prove an effective projective normality result for an ample line bundle on regular smooth four-folds with trivial canonical bundle. More precisely we show that for a regular smooth fourfold with trivial canonical bundle, $A^{\otimes 15}$ is projectively normal for $A$ ample. In the second part we emphasize on the projective normality of multiples of ample and globally generated line bundles on certain classes of known examples (upto deformation) of p…
We extend results of our previous papers, on ordinary multiple points of curves, and on the computation of their conductor, to ordinary multiple subvarieties of codimension one.
We classify almost homogeneous normal varieties of Albanese codimension $1$, defined over an arbitrary field. We prove that such a variety has a unique normal equivariant completion. Over a perfect field, the group scheme of automorphisms of this completion is smooth, except in one case in characteristic $2$, and we determine its (reduced) neutral component.
For a smooth projective variety $X\subset ¶^r$ embedded by the complete linear system, Property $N_p$ has been studied for a long time. On the other hand, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity conjecture and related problems have been focused for a projective variety which is not necessarily linearly normal. This paper aims to explain the influence of Property $N_p$ on higher normality and defining equations of a smooth variety embedded by sub-linear system. Also we prove a claim about Property $N_p$ of surface scrolls which is a generalization of Green's work in \cite{Green} about Property $N_p$ for…
Based on the celebrated result on zeros of holomorphic 1-forms on complex varieties of general type by Popa and Schnell, we study holomorphic 1-forms on $n$-dimensional varieties of Kodaira dimension $n-1$. We show that a complex minimal smooth projective variety $X$ of Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=\dim X-1$ admits a holomorphic 1-form without zero if and only if there is a smooth morphism from $X$ to an elliptic curve. Furthermore, for a general smooth projective variety (not necessarily minimal) $X$ of Kodaira codimension one, we give a structure theorem for $X$ given that $X$ admits a holomorphi…
For a polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$, Z. Jiang and G. Pareschi introduce an invariant $β(X,L)$, called the basepoint-freeness threshold. Using this invariant, we show that a general polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$ of dimension $g$ is projectively normal if $χ(L) \geq 2^{2g-1}$ and the type of $L$ is not $(2,4,\dots,4)$. This bound is sharp since it is known that any polarized abelian variety of type $(2,4,\dots,4)$ is not projectively normal. We also give an application of $β(X,L)$ to the Infinitesimal Torelli Theorem for $Y \in |L|$.
We begin with a short exposition of the theory of lattice varieties. This includes a description of their orbit structure and smooth locus. We construct a flat cover of the lattice variety and show that it is a complete intersection. We show that the lattice variety is locally a complete intersection and nonsingular in codimension one and hence normal. We then prove a comparison theorem showing that this theory becomes parallel to the function field case if linear algebra is replaced by $p$-linear algebra. We then compute the Lie algebra of the special linear group over the truncated Witt vect…
We give a bound of $k$ for a very ample lattice polytope to be $k$-normal. Equivalently, we give a new combinatorial bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of normal projective toric varieties.
We prove the Tate conjecture for divisor classes and the Mumford-Tate conjecture for the cohomology in degree 2 for varieties with $h^{2,0}=1$ over a finitely generated field of characteristic 0, under a mild assumption on their moduli. As an application of this general result, we prove the Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for some classes of algebraic surfaces with $p_g=1$.
Let $G$ be an algebraic group and let $X$ be a smooth $G$-variety with two orbits: an open orbit and a a closed orbit of codimension $1$. We give an algebraic description of the category of $G$-equivariant vector bundles on $X$ under a mild technical hypothesis. We deduce simpler classifications in the special cases of line bundles and vector bundles which are generically local systems. We apply our results to the study of admissible representations of semisimple Lie groups. Our main result gives a new set of constraints on the associated cycles of unipotent representations.
In this paper we extend to the singular setting the theory of Fano foliations developed in our previous paper. A Q-Fano foliation on a complex projective variety X is a foliation F whose anti-canonical class is an ample Q-Cartier divisor. In the spirit of Kobayashi-Ochiai Theorem, we prove that under some conditions the index i of a Q-Fano foliation is bounded by the rank r of F, and classify the cases in which i=r. Next we consider Q-Fano foliations F for which i=r-1. These are called del Pezzo foliations. We classify codimension 1 del Pezzo foliations on mildly singular varieties.
We determine which nilpotent orbits in $E_6$ have normal closure and which do not. We also verify a conjecture about small representations in rings of functions on nilpotent orbit covers for type $E_6$.
Let X\subsetneq\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^{N} be an n-dimensional nondegenerate smooth projective variety containing an m-dimensional subvariety Y. Assume that either m>\frac{n}{2} and X is a complete intersection or that m\geq\frac{N}{2}, we show deg(X)|deg(Y) and codim_{span(Y)}Y\geq codim_{\mathbb{P}^{N}}X, where span(Y) is the linear span of Y. These bounds are sharp. As an application, we classify smooth projective n-dimensional quadratic varieties swept out by m\geq[\frac{n}{2}]+1 dimensional quadrics passing through one point.
We prove that torsion codimension 2 algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on supersingular abelian varieties are algebraically equivalent to zero. As a consequence, we prove that homological equivalence coincides with algebraic equivalence for algebraic cycles of codimension 2 on supersingular abelian varieties over the algebraic closure of finite fields.
We study codimension two determinantal varieties with isolated singularities. These singularities admit a unique smoothing, thus we can define their Milnor number as the middle Betti number of their generic fiber. For surfaces in C^4, we obtain a Lê-Greuel formula expressing the Milnor number of the surface in terms of the second polar multiplicity and the Milnor number of a generic section. We also relate the Milnor number with Ebeling and Gusein-Zade index of the 1- form given by the differential of a generic linear projection defined on the surface. To illustrate the results, in the last se…
We show that Gorenstein singularities that are cones over singular Fano varieties provided by so-called flag quivers are smoothable in codimension three. Moreover, we give a precise characterization about the smoothability in codimension three of the Fano variety itself.
We construct Q-factorial terminal Fano varieties, starting in dimension 4, whose nef cone jumps when the variety is deformed. It follows that de Fernex and Hacon's results on deformations of 3-dimensional Fanos are optimal. The examples are based on the existence of high-dimensional flips which deform to isomorphisms, generalizing the Mukai flop. We also extend de Fernex and Hacon's positive results on deformations of Fano varieties. Toric Fano varieties which are smooth in codimension 2 and Q-factorial in codimension 3 are rigid. The divisor class group is deformation-invariant for klt Fanos …
We determine generators for the codimension 1 Chow group of the moduli spaces of genus zero stable maps to flag varieties G/P. In the case of SL flags, we find all relations between our generators, showing that they essentially come from $\bar M_{0,n}$. In addition, we analyze the codimension 2 classes on the moduli spaces of stable maps to Grassmannians and prove a new codimension 2 relation. This will lead to a partial reconstruction theorem for the Grassmannian of 2 planes.
We show that if an ample line bundle L on a nonsingular toric 3-fold satisfies h^0(L+2K)=0, then L is normally generated. As an application, we show that the anti-canonical divisor on a nonsingular toric Fano 4-fold is normally generated.
In this paper we give a lower bound for the codimension of the Andreotti-Mayer loci in the moduli space of principally polarized complex abelian varieties. We also present a conjecture on this codimension.
We propose a novel sufficient condition establishing that a piecewise affine variety has the same topology as a variety of the sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ defined by positively homogeneous $C^1$ functions. This covers the case of $C^1$ varieties in the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. We prove that this condition is sufficient in the case of codimension one and arbitrary dimension. We describe an implementation working for homogeneous polynomials in arbitrary dimension and codimension and give experimental evidences that our condition might still be sufficient in codimension greater than one.
We describe classes of toric varieties of codimension 2 which are either minimally defined by 3 binomial equations over any algebraically closed field, or are set-theoretic complete intersections in exactly one positive characteristic.
In this paper we investigate special arrangements of lines in multiprojective spaces. In particular, we characterize codimensional two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) varieties in $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1$, called varieties of lines. We also describe their ACM property from combinatorial algebra point of view.
In this paper we show that any smoothable complex projective variety, smooth in codimension two, with klt singularities and numerically trivial canonical class admits a finite cover, étale in codimension one, that decomposes as a product of an abelian variety, and singular analogues of irreducible Calabi-Yau and irreducible symplectic varieties.
Let A be a tame quasi-tilted algebra and d the dimension vector of an indecomposable A-module. In the paper we prove that each irreducible component of the variety of A-modules of dimension vector d is regular in codimension one.
In this article we develop a new way of systematically constructing infinitely many families of smooth subvarieties $X$ of any given dimension $m$, $m \geq 3$, and any given codimension in $\mathbb P^N$, embedded by complete subcanonical linear series, and, in particular, in the range of Hartshorne's conjecture. We accomplish this by showing the existence of everywhere non--reduced schemes called ropes, embedded in $\mathbb P^N$, and by smoothing them. In the range $3 \leq m < N/2$, we construct smooth subvarieties, embedded by complete subcanonical linear series, that are not complete interse…
For the classical groups, Kraft and Procesi have resolved the question of which nilpotent orbits have closures which are normal and which are not, with the exception of the very even orbits in $D_{2l}$ which have partition of the form $(a^{2k}, b^2)$ for $a, b$ distinct even natural numbers with $a k + b = 2 l$. In this article, we show that these orbits do have normal closure.
Let X be a complete toric variety with homogeneous coordinate ring S. In this article, we compute upper and lower bounds for the codimension in the critical degree of ideals of S generated by dim(X)+1 homogeneous polynomials that don't vanish simultaneously on X.
In this note, we prove that for any finite dimensional vector space $V$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, and for any finite subgroup $G$ of $GL(V)$ which is either solvable or is generated by pseudo reflections such that the $|G|$ is a unit in $k$, the projective variety $\mathbb P(V)/G$ is projectively normal with respect to the descent of $\mathcal O(1)^{\otimes |G|}$.
In our previous research, we constructed the affine varieties $Σ_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ and $Π_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ whose partial projectivizations admit $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$-fibrations with relative Picard number one. In this paper, we produce prime quasi-smooth $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds which are anticanonically embedded of codimension four and belong to 23 (resp.8) classes in the Graded Ring Database [GRDB], as weighted complete intersections in weighted projectivizations of $Σ_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ (resp.$Π_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ or its cone). We also show that a general member of the a…
We show that a general $n$-dimensional polarized abelian variety $(A,L)$ of a given polarization type and satisfying $ h^0(A, L) \geq \dfrac{8^n}{2} \cdot \dfrac{n^n}{n !}$ is projectively normal. In the process, we also obtain a sharp lower bound for the volume of a purely one-dimensional complex analytic subvariety in a geodesic tubular neighborhood of a subtorus of a compact complex torus.
In this paper, the generalized Bloch Conjecture on zero cycles for the quotient of certain complete intersections with trivial canonical bundle is proved to hold. As an application of Bloch-Srinivas method on the decomposition of the diagonal, we compute the rational coefficient Lawson homology for 1-cycles and codimension two cycles for these quotient varieties. The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture is proved to hold for codimension two cycles (and hence also for 2-cycles) on these quotient varieties.
The aim of this paper is to study codimension one foliations on rational homogeneous spaces, with a focus on the moduli space of foliations of low degree on Grassmannians and cominuscule spaces. Using equivariant techniques, we show that codimension one degree zero foliations on (ordinary, orthogonal, symplectic) Grassmannians of lines, some spinor varieties, some Lagrangian Grassmannians, the Cayley plane (an $E_6$-variety) and the Freudenthal variety (an $E_7$-variety) are identified with restrictions of foliations on the ambient projective space. We also provide some evidence that such resu…
We prove that in characteristic zero the multiplication of sections of dominant line bundles on a complete symmetric variety $X=\bar{G/H}$ is a surjective map. As a consequence the cone defined by a complete linear system over $X$, or over a closed $G$ stable subvariety of $X$ is normal. This gives an affirmative answer to a question raised by Faltings. A crucial point of the proof is a combinatorial property of root systems.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree,i.e., Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a given variety X is less than or equal to deg(X)-codimension(X)+1. Generic projection methods proved to be effective for the study of regularity of smooth projevtive varieties of dimension at most four(cf.[BM},[K2],[L],[Pi] and [R1]) because there are nice vanishing theorems for cohomology of vector bundles (e.g. the Kodaira-Kawamata-Viehweg vanish…
We give the construction of weighted Lagranngiann Grassmannians$wLGr(3,6)$ and weighted partial $A_3$ flag variety $wFl_{1,3}$ coming from the symplectic Lie group $Sp(6,\mathbb C)$ and the general linear group $GL(4,\mathbb C)$ respectively. We give general formulas for their Hilbert series in terms of Lie theoretic data. We use them as key varieties (Format) to construct some families of polarized 3-folds in codimension 7 and 9. At the end, we list all the distinct weighted flag varieties in codimension $4\le c\le 10$.
We prove that special ample line bundles on toric varieties arising from root systems are projectively normal. Here the maximal cones of the fans correspond to the Weyl chambers, and special means that the bundle is torus-equivariant such that the character of the line bundle that corresponds to a maximal Weyl chamber is dominant with respect to that chamber. Moreover, we prove that the associated semigroup rings are quadratic.
We classify complex projective varieties of dimension $2r \geq 8$ swept out by a family of codimension two grassmannians of lines $\mathbb{G}(1,r)$. They are either fibrations onto normal surfaces such that the general fibers are isomorphic to $\G(1,r)$ or the grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(1,r+1)$. The cases $r=2$ and $r=3$ are also considered in the more general context of varieties swept out by codimension two linear spaces or quadrics.
We develop reductions for classifications of singularities of orbit closures in module varieties. Then we show that the orbit closures for representations of Dynkin quivers are regular in codimension two.
Let M_d(k) denote the space of dxd-matrices with coefficients in an algebraically closed field k. Let X be an orbit closure in the product [M_d(k)]^t equipped with the action of the general linear group GL_d(k) by simultaneous conjugation. We show that X is regular at any its point y such that the orbit of y has codimension one in X. The proof uses mainly the representation theory of associative algebras.
We prove that in the parameter space of $M$-dimensional Fano complete intersections of index one and codimension two the locus of varieties that are not birationally superrigid has codimension at least $\frac12 (M-9)(M-10)-1$.
We construct families of non-toric $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal Fano ($\mathbb{Q}$-Fano) threefolds of codimension $\geq 20$ corresponding to 54 mutation classes of rigid maximally mutable Laurent polynomials. From the point of view of mirror symmetry, they are the highest codimension (non-toric) $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties for which we can currently establish the Fano/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence. We construct 46 additional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano threefolds with codimensions of new examples ranging between 19 and 10. Some of these varieties will be presented as toric complete intersections, a…
