An n-dimensional submanifold X of a projective space P^N (C) is called tangentially degenerate if the rank of its Gauss mapping γ: X ---> G (n, N) satisfies 0 < rank γ< n.
The authors systematically study the geometry of tangentially degenerate submanifolds of a projective space $P^N (\mathbf{C})$. By means of the focal images, three basic types of submanifolds are discovered: cones, tangentially degenerate hypersurfaces, and torsal submanifolds. Moreover, for tangentially degenerate submanifolds, a structural theorem is proven. By this theorem, tangentially degenerate submanifolds that do not belong to one of the basic types are foliated into submanifolds of basic types. In the proof the authors introduce irreducible, reducible, and completely reducible tangentially degenerate submanifolds. It is found that cones and tangentially degenerate hypersurfaces are irreducible, and torsal submanifolds are completely reducible while all other tangentially degenerate submanifolds not belonging to basic types are reducible.
Three-dimensional pseudo-spherical submanifolds in $\mathbb R^5$, whose Bianchi transformations are degenerate of rank 2, are studied. A complete description of such submanifolds is obtained in the case where the Bianchi transformations are holonomically degenerate.
We investigate half-lightlike submanifolds with planar normal sections of four dimensional pseudo Euclidean space. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a half-lightlike submanifold of $R_{2}^{4}$ such that it has degenerate or non-degenerate planar normal sections.
We generalize the Ruh-Vilms problem by characterizing the submanifolds in Euclidean spaces with proper biharmonic Gauss map and we construct examples of such hypersurfaces.
We present conditions on the Ricci curvature for complete, oriented, minimal submanifolds of Euclidean space, as well as the standard unit sphere, when the Gauss maps are bounded embeddings.
We prove that every non-degenerate minimal submanifold of codimension two can be obtained as the energy concentration set of a family of critical maps for the (rescaled) Ginzburg-Landau functional. The proof is purely variational, and follows the strategy laid out by Jerrard and Sternberg, extending a recent result for geodesics by Colinet-Jerrard-Sternberg. The same proof applies also to the $U(1)$-Yang-Mills-Higgs and to the Allen-Cahn-Hilliard energies.
It is proved some results about existence and non existence of unit normal sections of submanifolds of the Euclidean space and sphere which associated Gauss maps are harmonic. Some applications to CMC hypersurfaces of the sphere and isoparametric submanifolds are obtained too.
In this paper we show that two Kähler manifolds which do not share a Kähler submanifold, do not share either a Levi degenerate CR-submanifold with constant dimension Levi kernel. In particular, they do not share a CR-product. Further, we obtain that a Levi degenerate CR-submanifold of $\mathbb C^n$ cannot be isometrically immersed into a flag manifold.
In this work, we study the pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds of a pseudo-sphere with 1-type pseudo-spherical Gauss map. First, we classify the Lorentzian surfaces in a 4-dimensional pseudo-sphere $\mathbb{S}^4_s(1)$ with index s, $s=1, 2$, and having harmonic pseudo-spherical Gauss map. Then we give a characterization theorem for pseudo-Riemannian submanifolds of a pseudo-sphere $\mathbb{S}^{m-1}_s(1)\subset\mathbb{E}^m_s$ with 1-type pseudo-spherical Gauss map, and we classify spacelike surfaces and Lorentzian surfaces in the de Sitter space $\mathbb{S}^4_1(1)\subset\mathbb{E}^5_1$ with 1-type p…
In this paper we find a criterion for the Gauss map of an immersed smooth submanifold in some Lie group with left invariant metric to be harmonic. Using the obtained expression we prove some necessary and sufficient conditions for the harmonicity of this map in the case of totally geodesic submanifolds in Lie groups admitting biinvariant metrics. We show that, depending on the structure of the tangent space of a submanifold, the Gauss map can be harmonic in all biinvariant metrics or non-harmonic in some metric. For 2-step nilpotent groups we prove that the Gauss map of a geodesic is harmonic …
The Gauss map of a hypersurface of a unit sphere $S^{n+1}(1)$ is a Lagrangian immersion into the complex quadric $Q^n$ and, conversely, every Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$ is locally the image under the Gauss map of several hypersurfaces of $S^{n+1}(1)$. In this paper, we give explicit constructions for these correspondences and we prove a relation between the principal curvatures of a hypersurface of $S^{n+1}(1)$ and the local angle functions of the corresponding Lagrangian submanifold of $Q^n$. The existence of such a relation is remarkable since the definition of the angle functions depen…
For a submanifold with flat normal bundle in a space form there is a normal orthonormal basis that simultaneously diagonalizes the corresponding Weingarten operators, and at which these operators satisfy a simple Codazzi symmetry. When the second fundamental form has zero index of relative nullity, the image of the Gauss map as defined by Obata is a submanifold of a generalized Grassmannian manifold, with induced metric given by the third fundamental form, corresponding to the sum of the squares of these operators. In this case, we show that the Riemann curvature tensor of the Gauss image is c…
Recall that a submanifold of a Riemannian manifold is said to be minimal if its mean curvature is zero. It is classical that minimal submanifolds are the critical points of the volume function. In this paper, we examine the critical points of the total $(2k)$-th Gauss-Bonnet curvature function, called $(2k)$-minimal submanifolds. We prove that they are characterized by the vanishing of a higher mean curvature, namely the $(2k+1)$-Gauss-Bonnet curvature. Furthermore, we show that several properties of usual minimal submanifolds can be naturally generalized to $(2k)$-minimal submanifolds.
The authors study smooth lines on projective planes over the algebra C of complex numbers, the algebra C^1 of double numbers, and the algebra C^0 of dual numbers. In the space RP^5, to these smooth lines there correspond families of straight lines describing point three-dimensional tangentially degenerate submanifolds X^3 of rank 2. The authors study focal properties of these submanifolds and prove that they represent examples of different types of tangentially degenerate submanifolds. Namely, the submanifold X^3, corresponding in RP^5 to a smooth line γof the projective plane C, does not have…
Degenerate submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are quite difficult to study because there is no prefered connection when the submanifold is not totally geodesic. For the particular case of degenerate totally umbilical hypersurfaces, we show that there are "Weyl" connections adapted to the induced structure on the hypersurface. We begin the study of these with their holonomy.
It is well known that the space of oriented lines of Euclidean space has a natural symplectic structure. Moreover, given an immersed, oriented hypersurface S the set of oriented lines that cross S orthogonally is a Lagrangian submanifold. Conversely, if \bar{S} an n-dimensional family of oriented lines is Lagrangian, there exists, locally, a 1-parameter family of immersed, oriented, parallel hypersurfaces S_t whose tangent spaces cross orthogonally the lines of \bar{S}. The purpose of this paper is to generalize these facts to higher dimension: to any point x of a submanifold S of R^m of dimen…
The authors establish a relation of the theory of varieties with degenerate Gauss maps in projective spaces with the theory of congruences and pseudocongruences of subspaces and show how these two theories can be applied to the construction of induced connections on submanifolds of projective spaces and other spaces endowed with a projective structure.
We study associative submanifolds of the Berger space SO(5)/SO(3) endowed with its homogeneous nearly-parallel G2-structure. We focus on two geometrically interesting classes: the ruled associatives, and the associatives with special Gauss map. We show that the associative submanifolds ruled by a certain special type of geodesic are in correspondence with pseudo-holomorphic curves in $Gr_2^+(TS^4).$ Using this correspondence, together with a theorem of Bryant on superminimal surfaces in $S^4,$ we prove the existence of infinitely many topological types of compact immersed associative 3-folds i…
In this paper, we study the regular geometric behavior of the mean curvature flow (MCF) of submanifolds in the standard Gaussian metric space $({\mathbb R}^{m+p},e^{-|x|^2/m}\ol g)$ where $({\mathbb R}^{m+p},\ol g)$ is the standard Euclidean space and $x\in{\mathbb R}^{m+p}$ denotes the position vector. Note that, as a special Riemannian manifold, $({\mathbb R}^{m+p},e^{-|x|^2/m}\ol g)$ has an unbounded curvature. Up to a family of diffeomorphisms on $M^m$, the mean curvature flow we considered here turns out to be equivalent to a special variation of the ``{\em conformal mean curvature flow}\…
We study that the $n-$graphs defining by smooth map $f:\Om\subset \ir{n}\to \ir{m}, m\ge 2,$ in $\ir{m+n}$ of the prescribed mean curvature and the Gauss image. We derive the interior curvature estimates $$\sup_{D_R(x)}|B|^2\le\f{C}{R^2}$$ under the dimension limitations and the Gauss image restrictions. If there is no dimension limitation we obtain $$\sup_{D_R(x)}|B|^2\le C R^{-a}\sup_{D_{2R}(x)}(2-\De_f)^{-(\f{3}{2}+\f{1}{s})}, \qquad s=\min(m, n)$$ with $a<1$ under the condition $$\De_f=[\text{det}(\de_{ij}+\sum_\a\pd{f^\a}{x^i}\pd{f^\a}{x^j})]^{\f{1}{2}}<2.$$ If the image under the Gauss m…
We show that non-degenerate hyperquadrics in R^{n+2} admit no skew branes. Stated more traditionally, a compact codimension-one immersed submanifold of a non-degenerate hyperquadric of euclidean space must have parallel tangent spaces at two distinct points. Similar results have been proven by others, but (except for ellipsoids in R^3) always under C^2 smoothness and genericity assumptions. We use neither assumption here.
In this paper we study tangentially degeneracy of the orbits of s-representations in the sphere. We show that an orbit of an s-representation is tangentially degenerate if and only if it is through a long root, or a short root of restricted root system of type G_2. Moreover these orbits provide many new examples of tangentially degenerate submanifolds which satisfy the Ferus equality.
We study the mean curvature flow of complete space-like submanifolds in pseudo-Euclidean space with bounded Gauss image, as well as that of complete submanifolds in Euclidean space with convex Gauss image. By using the confinable property of the Gauss image under the mean curvature flow we prove the long time existence results in both cases. We also study the asymptotic behavior of these solutions when $t\to\infty$.
We derive curvature estimates for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space for arbitrary dimension and codimension via Gauss map. Thus, Schoen-Simon-Yau's results and Ecker-Huisken's results are generalized to higher codimension. In this way we improve Hildebrandt-Jost-Widman's result for the Bernstein type theorem.
We obtain new curvature estimates and Bernstein type results for minimal $n-$submanifolds in $\ir{n+m},\, m\ge 2$ under the condition that the rank of its Gauss map is at most 2. In particular, this applies to minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces of arbitrary codimension.
We consider the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^*}^n$ as a complex hypersurface of complex anti-de Sitter space. Shape operators of this submanifold give rise to a family of local almost product structures on ${Q^*}^n$, which are then used to define local angle functions on any Lagrangian submanifold of ${Q^*}^n$. We prove that a Lagrangian immersion into ${Q^*}^n$ can be seen as the Gauss map of a spacelike hypersurface of (real) anti-de Sitter space and relate the angle functions to the principal curvatures of this hypersurface. We also give a formula relating the mean curvature of the Lagran…
Given a domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$ and a $k$-dimensional non-degenerate minimal submanifold $K$ of $\pa Ω$ with $1\le k\le m-1$, we prove the existence of a family of embedded constant mean curvature hypersurfaces which as their mean curvature tends to infinity concentrate along $K$ and intersecting $\partial Ω$ perpendicularly.
B.-Y. Chen initiated the study of warped product submanifolds in his fundamental seminal papers \cite{C1,C2,C2.1}. In this paper, we study contact CR-warped product submanifolds of cosymplectic space forms and prove an optimal inequality by using Gauss and Codazzi equations. In addition, we obtain two geometric inequalities for contact CR-warped product submanifolds with a compact invariant factor.
Under suitable conditions on the range of the Gauss map of a complete submanifold of Euclidean space with parallel mean curvature, we construct a strongly subharmonic function and derive a-priori estimates for the harmonic Gauss map. The required conditions here are more general than in previous work and they therefore enable us to improve substantially previous results for the Lawson-Osseman problem concerning the regularity of minimal submanifolds in higher codimension and to derive Bernstein type results.
The goal of the present paper is to investigate the algebraic structure of global conformal invariants of submanifolds. These are defined to be conformally invariant integrals of geometric scalars of the tangent and normal bundle. A famous example of a global conformal invariant is the Willmore energy of a surface. In codimension one we classify such invariants, showing that under a structural hypothesis (more precisely we assume the integrand depends separately on the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures, and not on their derivatives) the integrand can only consist of an intrinsic scalar confor…
Special Lagrangian submanifolds are submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau manifold calibrated by the real part of the holomorphic volume form. In this paper we use elliptic theory for edge-degenerate differential operators on singular manifolds to study the moduli space of deformations of special Lagrangian submanifolds with edge singularities. We obtain a general theorem describing the local structure of the moduli space. When the obstruction space vanishes the moduli space is a smooth, finite dimensional manifold.
Combining the tools of geometric analysis with properties of Jordan angles and angle space distributions, we derive a spherical and a Euclidean Bernstein theorem for minimal submanifolds of arbitrary dimension and codimension, under the condition that the Gauss image is contained in some geometrically defined closed region of a Grassmannian manifold. The proof depends on the subharmoncity of an auxiliary function, the Codazzi equations and geometric measure theory.
We show that the regularized Riesz $\a$-energy for closed submanifolds $M$ in $\RR^n$ blows up as $M$ degenerates to have double points if $\a\le-2\dim M$. This gives theoretical foundation of numerical experiments to evolve surfaces to decrease the energy which have been carried out since 90's.
Finding examples of tangentially degenerate submanifolds (submanifolds with degenerate Gauss mappings) in an Euclidean space $R^4$ that are noncylindrical and without singularities is an important problem of differential geometry. The first example of such a hypersurface was constructed by Sacksteder in 1960. In 1995 Wu published an example of a noncylindrical tangentially degenerate algebraic hypersurface in $R^4$ whose Gauss mapping is of rank 2 and which is also without singularities. This example was constructed (but not published) by Bourgain. In this paper, the authors analyze Bourgain's…
We classify 4-dimensional austere submanifolds in Euclidean space ruled by 2-planes. The algebraic possibilities for second fundamental forms of an austere 4-fold M were classified by Bryant, falling into three types which we label A, B, and C. We show that if M is 2-ruled of Type A, then the ruling map from M into the Grassmannian of 2-planes in R^n is holomorphic, and we give a construction for M starting with a holomorphic curve in an appropriate twistor space. If M is 2-ruled of Type B, then M is either a generalized helicoid in R^6 or the product of two classical helicoids in R^3. If M is…
In this article, we construct a new para-Kähler structure $({\mathcal G},{\mathcal J},Ω)$ in the space of oriented geodesics ${\mathbb L}(M)$ in a non-flat, real space form $M$. We first show that the para-Kähler metric ${\mathcal G}$ is scalar flat and when $M$ is a 3-dimensional real space form, ${\mathcal G}$ is locally conformally flat. Furthermore, we prove that the space of oriented geodesics in hyperbolic $n$-space, equipped with the constructed metric ${\mathcal G}$, is minimally isometric embedded in the tangent bundle of the hyperbolic $n$-space. We then study the submanifold theory,…
We study singularities of Gauss maps of fronts and give characterizations of types of singularities of Gauss maps by geometric properties of fronts which are related to behavior of bounded principal curvatures. Moreover, we investigate relation between a kind of boundedness of Gaussian curvatures near cuspidal edges and types of singularities of Gauss maps of cuspidal edges. Further, we consider extended height functions on fronts with non-degenerate singular points.
We establish Bernstein Theorems for Lagrangian graphs which are Hamiltonian minimal or have conformal Maslov form. Some known results of minimal (Lagrangian) submanifolds are generalized.
$ξ$-submanifold in the Euclidean space $\bbr^{m+p}$ is a natural extension of the concept of self-shrinker to the mean curvature flow in $\bbr^{m+p}$. It is also a generalization of the $λ$-hypersurface defined by Q.-M. Cheng et al to arbitrary codimensions. In this paper, some characterizations for $ξ$-submanifolds are established. First, it is shown that a submanifold in $\bbr^{m+p}$ is a $ξ$-submanifold if and only if its modified mean curvature is parallel when viewed as a submanifold in the Gaussian space $(\bbr^{m+p},e^{-\fr{|x|^2}{m}}\lagl\cdot,\cdot\ragl)$; Then, two weighted volume fu…
The authors study in detail new types of varieties with degenerate Gauss maps: varieties with multiple foci and their particular case, the so-called twisted cones. They prove an existence theorem for twisted cones and describe their structure.
We prove a Gauss-Bonnet theorem for (finite coverings of) moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces endowed with the McMullen metric. The proof uses properties of an exhaustion of moduli spaces by compact submanifolds with corners and the Gauss-Bonnet formula of Allendoerfer and Weil for Riemannian polyhedra.
Let Σbe a complete minimal Lagrangian submanifold of \C^n. We identify regions in the Grassmannian of Lagrangian subspaces so that whenever the image of the Gauss map of Σlies in one of these regions, then Σis an affine space.
We give a spinorial representation of a submanifold of any dimension and co-dimension in a symmetric space $G/H,$ where $G$ is a complex semi-simple Lie group and $H$ is a compact real form of $G.$ This in particular includes $SL_n(\mathbb{C})/SU(n),$ and extends the previously known spinorial representation of a surface in $\mathbb{H}^3$ if $n=2.$ We also recover the Bryant representation of a surface with constant mean curvature 1 in $\mathbb{H}^3$ and its generalization for a surface with holomorphic right Gauss map in $SL_n(\mathbb{C})/SU(n).$ As a new application, we obtain a fundamental …
We study the Gauss map and the dual variety of a real-analytic immersion of a connected compact real-analytic manifold into a sphere or into a hyperbolic space. The dual variety is defined to be the set of all normal directions of the immersion. First, we show that the image of the Gauss map characterizes the manifold. Also we show that the dual variety characterizes the manifold. Besides, duality of the second fundamental form and some results on degeneration are obtained. In Algebraic Geometry E-prints eight files are tar-compressed and uuencoded.
In this paper we find necessary and sufficient conditions for a nondegenerate arbitrary signature manifold $M^n$ to be realized as a submanifold in the large class of warped product manifolds $\varepsilon I\times_a\mathbb{M}^{N}_λ(c)$, where $\varepsilon=\pm 1,\ a:I\subset\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}^+$ is the scale factor and $\mathbb{M}^{N}_λ(c)$ is the $N$-dimensional semi-Riemannian space form of index $λ$ and constant curvature $c\in\{-1,1\}.$ We prove that if $M^n$ satisfies Gauss, Codazzi and Ricci equations for a submanifold in $\varepsilon I\times_a\mathbb{M}^{N}_λ(c)$, along with some add…
The aim of this paper is fourfold. Firstly, we introduce and study the f-ultra-harmonic maps. Secondly, we recall the geometric dynamics generated by a first order normal PDE system and we give original results regarding the geometric dynamics generated by other first order PDE systems. Thirdly, we determine the Gauss PDEs and the fundamental forms associated to integral manifolds of first order PDE systems. Fourthly, we change the Gauss PDEs into a geometric dynamics on the jet bundle of order one, showing that there exist an infinity of Riemannian metrics such that the lift of a submanifold …
Given a complete isometric immersion $ϕ: P^m \longrightarrow N^n$ in an ambient Riemannian manifold $N^n$ with a pole and with radial sectional curvatures bounded from above by the corresponding radial sectional curvatures of a radially symmetric space $M^n_w$, we determine a set of conditions on the extrinsic curvatures of $P$ that guarantees that the immersion is proper and that $P$ has finite topology, in the line of the paper "On Submanifolds With Tamed Second Fundamental Form", (Glasgow Mathematical Journal, 51, 2009), authored by G. Pacelli Bessa and M. Silvana Costa. When the ambient ma…
