All local solutions of the two dimensional Einstein-Weyl equations are found, and related to the compact examples which I obtained in "Moebius structures and two dimensional Einstein-Weyl geometry" J. reine angew. Math. 504 (1998).
In this article, we study Einstein-Weyl structures on almost cosymplectic manifolds. First we prove that an almost cosymplectic $(κ,μ)$-manifold is Einstein or cosymplectic if it admits a closed Einstein-Weyl structure or two Einstein-Weyl structures. Next for a three dimensional compact almost $α$-cosymplectic manifold admitting closed Einstein-Weyl structures, we prove that it is Ricc-flat. Further, we show that an almost $α$-cosymplectic admitting two Einstein-Weyl structures is either Einstein or $α$-cosymplectic, provided that its Ricci tensor is commuting. Finally, we prove that a compac…
Starting from a real analytic surface $\mathcal{M}$ with a real analytic conformal Cartan connection A. Borówka constructed a minitwistor space of an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein-Weyl manifold with $\mathcal{M}$ being the boundary. In this article, starting from a symmetry of conformal Cartan connection, we prove that symmetries of conformal Cartan connection on $\mathcal{M}$ can be extended to symmetries of the obtained Einstein-Weyl manifold.
We show that a compact K-contact manifold $(M,g,ξ)$ has a closed Weyl-Einstein connection compatible with the conformal structure $[g]$ if and only if it is Sasaki-Einstein.
In this paper we introduce the notion of generalized quasi--Einstein manifold, that generalizes the concepts of Ricci soliton, Ricci almost soliton and quasi--Einstein manifolds. We prove that a complete generalized quasi--Einstein manifold with harmonic Weyl tensor and with zero radial Weyl curvature, is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$--dimensional Einstein fibers. In particular, this implies a local characterization for locally conformally flat gradient Ricci almost solitons, similar to that proved for gradient Ricci solitons.
We prove that simply connected Einstein four-manifolds of positive scalar curvature are conformally Kähler if and only if the determinant of the self-dual Weyl curvature is positive.
We consider local geometry of sub-pseudo-Riemannian structures on contact manifolds. We construct fundamental invariants of the structures and show that the structures give rise to Einstein-Weyl geometries in dimension 3, provided that certain additional conditions are satisfied.
The very definition of an Einstein metric implies that all its geometry is encoded in the Weyl tensor. With this in mind, in this paper we derive higher-order Bochner type formulas for the Weyl tensor on a four dimensional Einstein manifold. In particular, we prove a second Bochner type formula which, formally, extends to the covariant derivative level the classical one for the Weyl tensor obtained by Derdzinski in 1983. As a consequence, we deduce some integral identities involving the Weyl tensor and its derivatives on a compact four dimensional Einstein manifold.
In this paper we consider an Einstein-type equation which generalizes important geometric equations, like static and critical point equations. We prove that a complete Einstein-type manifold with fourth-order divergence-free Weyl tensor and zero radial Weyl curvature is locally a warped product with $(n-1)$-dimensional Einstein fibers, provided that the potential function is proper. As a consequence, we prove a result about the nonexistence of multiple black holes in static spacetimes.
The problem of characterizing conformally Einstein manifolds by tensorial conditions has been tackled recently in papers by M. Listing, and in work by A. R. Gover and P. Nurowski. Their results apply to metrics satisfying a "non-degeneracy" condition on the Weyl tensor \W. We investigate the geometry of the foliations arising on conformally Einstein spaces (with Riemannian signature) where this condition fails, which then allows us to characterize a general class of locally conformally Einstein Riemannian manifolds with degenerate Weyl tensor.
The aim of this paper is to study complete (noncompact) steady $m$-quasi-Einstein manifolds satisfying a fourth-order vanishing condition on the Weyl tensor. In this case, we are able to prove that a steady $m$-quasi-Einstein manifold ($m>1$) on a simply connected $n$-dimensional manifold $(M^{n},g)$, $(n\geq4),$ with nonnegative Ricci curvature and zero radial Weyl curvature must be a warped product with $(n-1)-$dimensional Einstein fiber, provided that $M$ has fourth order divergence-free Weyl tensor (i.e., ${\rm div}^{4}W=0$).
We construct infinitely many Einstein-Weyl structures on $S^2 \times R$ of signature (-++) which is sufficiently close to the model case of constant curvature, and whose space-like geodesics are all closed. Such structures are obtained from small perturbations of the diagonal of $CP^1 \times CP^1$ using the method of LeBrun-Mason type twistor theory. The geometry of constructed Einstein-Weyl space is well understood from the configuration of holomorphic disks. We also review Einstein-Weyl structures and their properties in the former half of this article.
We study Weyl structures on lightlikes hypersurfaces endowed with a conformal structure of certain type and specific screen distribution: the Weyl screen structures. We investigate various differential geometric properties of Einstein-Weyl screen structures on lightlike hypersurfaces and show that, for ambiant Lorentzian space $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}_{1}$ and a totally umbilical screen foliation, there is a strong interplay with the induced (Riemannian) Weyl-structure on the leaves. Finally, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a Weyl structure defined by the $1-$form of an almost co…
Starting from a real analytic conformal Cartan connection on a real analytic surface $S$, we construct a complex surface $T$ containing a family of pairs of projective lines. Using the structure on $S$ we also construct a complex $3$-space $Z$, such that $Z$ is a twistor space of a self-dual conformal $4$-fold and $T$ is a quotient of $Z$ by a holomorphic local $\mathbb{C}^*$ action. We prove that $T$ is a minitwistor space of an asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein-Weyl space with $S$ as an asymptotic boundary.
Peng Wu recently announced a beautiful characterization of conformally Kaehler, Einstein metrics of positive scalar curvature on compact oriented 4-manifolds via the condition det (W^+) > 0. In this note, we buttress his claim by providing an entirely different proof of his result. We then present further consequences of our method, which builds on techniques previously developed in (LeBrun 2015).
An affine hypersurface (AH) structure is a pair comprising a conformal structure and a projective structure such that for any torsion-free connection representing the projective structure the completely trace-free part of the covariant derivative of any metric representing the conformal structure is completely symmetric. AH structures simultaneously generalize Weyl structures and abstract the geometric structure determined on a non-degenerate co-oriented hypersurface in flat affine space by its second fundamental form together with either the projective structure induced by the affine normal o…
We investigate which three dimensional near-horizon metrics $g_{NH}$ admit a compatible 1-form $X$ such that $(X, [g_{NH}])$ defines an Einstein-Weyl structure. We find explicit examples and see that some of the solutions give rise to Einstein-Weyl structures of dispersionless KP type and dispersionless Hirota (aka hyperCR) type.
The second H. Weyl curvature invariant of a Riemannian manifold, denoted $h_4$, is the second curvature invariant which appears in the well known tube formula of H. Weyl. It coincides with the Gauss-Bonnet integrand in dimension 4. A crucial property of $h_4$ is that it is nonnegative for Einstein manifolds, hence it provides a geometric obstruction to the existence of Einstein metrics in dimensions $\geq 4$, independently from the sign of the Einstein constant. This motivates our study of the positivity of this invariant. Here in this paper, we prove many constructions of metrics with positiv…
There are described equations for a pair comprising a Riemannian metric and a Killing field on a surface that contain as special cases the Einstein Weyl equations (in the sense of D. Calderbank) and a real version of a special case of the Abelian vortex equations, and it is shown that the property that a metric solve these equations is preserved by the Ricci flow. The equations are solved explicitly, and among the metrics obtained are all steady gradient Ricci solitons (e.g. the the cigar soliton) and the sausage metric; there are found other examples of eternal, ancient, and immortal Ricci fl…
In this paper we show that the space of nodal rational curves, which is so called a Severi variety (of rational curves), on any non-singular projective surface is always equipped with a natural Einstein-Weyl structure, if the space is 3-dimensional. This is a generalization of the Einstein-Weyl structure on the space of smooth rational curves on a complex surface, given by N.Hitchin. As geometric objects naturally associated to Einstein-Weyl structure, we investigate null surfaces and geodesics on the Severi varieties. Also we see that if the projective surface has an appropriate real structur…
Motivated by the study of Weyl structures on conformal manifolds admitting parallel weightless forms, we define the notion of conformal product of conformal structures and study its basic properties. We obtain a classification of Weyl manifolds carrying parallel forms, and we use it to investigate the holonomy of the adapted Weyl connection on conformal products. As an application we describe a new class of Einstein-Weyl manifolds of dimension 4.
We characterize Lorentzian three-dimensional hyper-CR Einstein-Weyl structures in terms of invariants of the associated third order ordinary differential equations.
We study the Jones and Tod correspondence between selfdual conformal 4-manifolds with a conformal vector field and abelian monopoles on Einstein-Weyl 3-manifolds, and prove that invariant complex structures correspond to shear-free geodesic congruences. Such congruences exist in abundance and so provide a tool for constructing interesting selfdual geometries with symmetry, unifying the theories of scalar-flat Kahler metrics and hypercomplex structures with symmetry. We also show that in the presence of such a congruence, the Einstein-Weyl equation is equivalent to a pair of coupled monopole eq…
In this paper we study 4-dimensional $(m,ρ)$-quasi-Einstein manifolds with harmonic Weyl curvature when $m\notin\{0,\pm1,-2,\pm\infty\}$ and $ρ\notin\{\frac{1}{4},\frac{1}{6}\}$. We prove that a non-trivial $(m,ρ)$-quasi-Einstein metric $g$ (not necessarily complete) is locally isometric to one of the followings: (i) $\mathcal{B}^2_\frac{R}{2(m+2)}\times \mathbb{N}^2_\frac{R(m+1)}{2(m+2)}$ where $\mathcal{B}^2_\frac{R}{2(m+2)}$ is a northern hemisphere in the 2-dimensional sphere $\mathbb{S}^2_\frac{R}{2(m+2)}$, $\mathbb{N}_δ$ is the 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold with constant curvature $δ…
If a smooth compact 4-manifold M admits a Kaehler-Einstein metric g of positive scalar curvature, Gursky showed that its conformal class [g] is an absolute minimizer of the Weyl functional among all conformal classes with positive Yamabe constant. Here we prove that, with the same hypotheses, [g] also minimizes of the Weyl functional on a different open set of conformal classes, most of which have negative Yamabe constant. An analogous minimization result is then proved for Einstein metrics g which are Hermitian, but not Kaehler.
In this paper, we study the regularity of asymptotically hyperbolic metrics with Einstein condition near boundary and Weyl curvature smooth enough in arbitrary dimension. Following Michael Anderson's method, we show that $C^{m,α}$ conformally compact Riemannian metrics with Einstein equation vanishing to finite order near boundary have conformal compactifications that are $C^{m+2,α}$ up to the boundary when Weyl curvature is in $C^{m,α}$ and the boundary metric is in $C^{m+2,α}$ where $m\geq 3.$
We apply the technique of integrable extensions to the symmetry pseudo-group of the dKP-hyper CR interpolating equation. This allows us to find a covering for this equation and to construct multi-valued Einstein-Weyl structures.
In this article, we give a survey of Geometric Invariant Theory for Toric Varieties, and present an application to the Einstein-Weyl Geometry. We compute the image of the Minitwistor space of the Honda metrics as a categorical quotient according to the most efficient linearization. The result is the complex weighted projective space CP_(1,1,2). We also find and classify all possible quotients.
Cartan's list of 3-dimensional Weyl structures with reduced holonomy is revisited. We show that the only Einstein-Weyl structures on this list correspond to the structures generated by the solutions of the dKP equation.
We prove that a four-dimensional gradient shrinking Ricci soliton with $δW^{\pm}=0$ is either Einstein, or a finite quotient of $S^3\times\mathbb{R}$, $S^2\times\mathbb{R}^2$ or $\mathbb{R}^4$. We also prove that a four-dimensional cscK gradient Ricci soliton is either Kähler-Einstein, or a finite quotient of $M\times\mathbb{C}$, where $M$ is a Riemann surface. The main arguments are curvature decompositions, the Weitzenböck formula for half Weyl curvature, and the maximum principle.
Einstein-Weyl structures on a three-dimensional manifold $M$ is given by a system $E$ of PDEs on sections of a bundle over $M$. This system is invariant under the Lie pseudogroup $G$ of local diffeomorphisms on $M$. Two Einstein-Weyl structures are locally equivalent if there exists a local diffeomorphism taking one to the other. Our goal is to describe the quotient equation $E/G$ whose solutions correspond to nonequivalent Einstein-Weyl structures. The approach uses symmetries of the Manakov-Santini integrable system and the action of the corresponding Lie pseudogroup.
HyperCR Einstein--Weyl equations in 2+1 dimensions reduce to a pair of quasi-linear PDEs of hydrodynamic type. All solutions to this hydrodynamic system can be in principle constructed from a twistor correspondence, thus establishing the integrability. Simple examples of solutions including the hydrodynamic reductions yield new Einstein--Weyl structures.
We show that solutions of the Seiberg-Witten equations lead to non-trivial lower bounds for the L2-norm of the Weyl curvature of a compact Riemannian 4-manifold. These estimates are then used to derive new obstructions to the existence of Einstein metrics. These results considerably refine those previously obtained using scalar-curvature estimates alone.
We show that conformally compact, globally hyperbolic, Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl 3-manifolds are in natural one-to-one correspondence with orientation-reversing diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere. The proof hinges on a holomorphic-disk analog of Hitchin's mini-twistor correspondence.
We present two constructions of new solutions to the dispersionless KP (dKP) equation arising from the first two Painlevé transcendents. The first construction is a hodograph transformation based on Einstein--Weyl geometry, the generalised Nahm's equation and the isomonodromy problem. The second construction, motivated by the first, is a direct characterisation of solutions to dKP which are constant on a central quadric. We show how the solutions to the dKP equations can be used to construct some three-dimensional Einstein--Weyl structures, and four--dimensional anti-self-dual null-Kähler metr…
We exploit the correspondence between the three-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl geometries of the hyper-CR type, and the Veronese webs to show that the former structures are locally given in terms of solutions to the dispersionless Hirota equation. We also demonstrate how to construct hyper-CR Einstein--Weyl structures by Kodaira deformations of the flat twistor space $T\CP^1$, and how to recover the pencil of Poisson structures in five dimensions illustrating the method by an example of the Veronese web on the Heisenberg group.
In this paper we consider the geometric behavior near infinity of some Einstein manifolds $(X^n, g)$ with Weyl curvature belonging to a certain $L^p$ space. Namely, we show that if $(X^n, g)$, $n \geq 7$, admits an essential set and has its Weyl curvature in $L^p$ for some $1<p<\frac{n-1}{2}$, then $(X^n, g)$ must be asymptotically locally hyperbolic. One interesting application of this theorem is to show a rigidity result for the hyperbolic space under an integral condition for the curvature.
A Hermitian Einstein-Weyl manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Ricci-flat Kaehler covering W, with the deck transform acting on W by homotheties. If compact, it admits a canonical Vaisman metric, due to Gauduchon. We show that a Hermitian Einstein-Weyl structure on a compact complex manifold is determined by its volume form. This result is a conformal analogue of Calabi's theorem stating the uniqueness of Kaehler metrics with a given volume form in a given Kaehler class. We prove that a solution of a conformal version of complex Monge-Ampere equation is unique. We conjecture that a Hermi…
We consider four (real or complex) dimensional hyper-Kähler metrics with a conformal symmetry K. The three-dimensional space of orbits of K is shown to have an Einstein-Weyl structure which admits a shear-free geodesics congruence for which the twist is a constant multiple of the divergence. In this case the Einstein-Weyl equations reduce down to a single second order PDE for one function. The Lax representation, Lie point symmetries, hidden symmetries and the recursion operator associated with this PDE are found, and some group invariant solutions are considered.
We construct a map of solutions of the dispersionless BKP (dBKP) equation to solutions of the Manakov-Santini (MS) system. This map defines an Einstein-Weyl structure corresponding to the dBKP equation through the general Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl structure corresponding to the MS system. We give a spectral characterisation of reduction of the MS system which singles out the image of the dBKP equation solutions and also consider more general reductions of this class. We define the BMS system and extend the map defined above to the map (Miura transformation) of solutions of the BMS system to sol…
This is a survey on quaternion Hermitian Weyl (locally conformally quaternion Kähler) and hyperhermitian Weyl (locally conformally hyperkähler) manifolds. These geometries appear by requesting the compatibility of some quaternion Hermitian or hyperhermitian structure with a Weyl structure. The motivation for such a study is two-fold: it comes from the constantly growing interest in Weyl (and Einstein-Weyl) geometry and, on the other hand, from the necessity of understanding the existing classes of quaternion Hermitian manifolds.
In this paper, we prove that a compact quasi-Einstein manifold $(M^n,\,g,\,u)$ of dimension $n\geq 4$ with boundary $\partial M,$ nonnegative sectional curvature and zero radial Weyl tensor is either isometric, up to scaling, to the standard hemisphere $\Bbb{S}^n_+,$ or $g=dt^{2}+ψ^{2}(t)g_{L}$ and $u=u(t),$ where $g_{L}$ is Einstein with nonnegative Ricci curvature. A similar classification result is obtained by assuming a fourth-order vanishing condition on the Weyl tensor. Moreover, a new example is presented in order to justify our assumptions. In addition, the case of dimension $n=3$ is a…
The equations governing anti-self-dual and Einstein-Weyl conformal geometries can be regarded as `master dispersionless systems' in four and three dimensions respectively. Their integrability by twistor methods has been established by Penrose and Hitchin. In this note we present, in specially adapted coordinate systems, explicit forms of the corresponding equations and their Lax pairs. In particular, we demonstrate that any Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl structure is locally given by a solution to the Manakov-Santini system, and we find a system of two coupled third-order scalar PDEs for a general a…
Einstein-Weyl geometry is a triple (D,g,w), where D is a symmetric connection, [g] is a conformal structure and w is a covector such that: (i) connection D preserves the conformal class [g], that is, Dg=wg; (ii) trace-free part of the symmetrised Ricci tensor of D vanishes. Three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl structures arise naturally on solutions of second-order dispersionless integrable PDEs in 3D. In this context, [g] coincides with the characteristic conformal structure and is therefore uniquely determined by the equation. On the contrary, the covector w is a somewhat more mysterious object, …
We show that the horizon geometry for supersymmetric black hole solutions of minimal five-dimensional gauged supergravity is that of a particular Einstein-Cartan-Weyl (ECW) structure in three dimensions, involving the trace and traceless part of both torsion and nonmetricity, and obeying some precise constraints. In the limit of zero cosmological constant, the set of nonlinear partial differential equations characterizing this ECW structure reduces correctly to that of a hyper-CR Einstein-Weyl structure in the Gauduchon gauge, which was shown by Dunajski, Gutowski and Sabra to be the horizon g…
We consider weighted parallel spinors in Lorentzian Weyl geometry in arbitrary dimensions, choosing the weight such that the integrability condition for the existence of such a spinor, implies the geometry to be Einstein-Weyl. We then use techniques developed for the classification of supersymmetric solutions to supergravity theories to characterise those Lorentzian EW geometries that allow for a weighted parallel spinor, calling the resulting geometries supersymmetric. The overall result is that they are either conformally related to ordinary geometries admitting parallel spinors (w.r.t. the …
We consider two multi-dimensional generalisations of the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation, both allowing for arbitrary dimensionality, and non-linearity. For one of these generalisations, we characterise all solutions which are constant on a central quadric. The quadric ansatz leads to a second order ODE which is equivalent to Painleve I or II for the dKP equation, but fails to pass the Painlevé test in higher dimensions. The second generalisation of the dKP equation leads to a class of Einstein-Weyl structures in an arbitrary dimension, which is characterised by the existe…
The author has elsewhere given a complete classification of those compact oriented Einstein 4-manifolds on which the self-dual Weyl curvature is everywhere positive in the direction of some self-dual harmonic 2-form. In this article, similar results are obtained when the self-dual Weyl curvature is everywhere non-negative in the direction of a self-dual harmonic 2-form that is transverse to the zero section of the bundle of self-dual 2-forms. However, this transversality condition plays an essential role in the story; dropping it leads one into wildly different territory where entirely differe…
Holonomy algebras of Lorentzian Weyl spin manifolds with weighted parallel spinors are found. For Lorentzian Weyl manifolds admitting recurrent null vector fields are introduced special local coordinates similar to Kundt and Walker ones. Using that, the local form of all Lorentzian Weyl spin manifolds with weighted parallel spinors is given. The Einstein-Weyl equation for the obtained Weyl structures is analyzed and examples of Einstein-Weyl spaces with weighted parallel spinors are given.
A longstanding open problem in mathematical physics has been that of finding an action principle for the Einstein-Weyl (EW) equations. In this paper, we present for the first time such an action principle in three dimensions in which the Weyl vector is not exact. More precisely, our model contains, in addition to the Weyl nonmetricity, a traceless part. If the latter is (consistently) set to zero, the equations of motion boil down to the EW equations. In particular, we consider a metric affine $f(R)$ gravity action plus additional terms involving Lagrange multipliers and gravitational Chern-Si…
For several classes of second order dispersionless PDEs, we show that the symbols of their formal linearizations define conformal structures which must be Einstein-Weyl in 3D (or self-dual in 4D) if and only if the PDE is integrable by the method of hydrodynamic reductions. This demonstrates that the integrability of these dispersionless PDEs can be seen from the geometry of their formal linearizations.
We analyse in a systematic way the (non-)compact n-dimensional Einstein Weyl spaces equipped with a cohomogeneity-one metric. With no compactness hypothesis, we prove that, as soon as the (n-1)-dimensional space is an homogeneous reductive Riemannian space with an unimodular group of left-acting isometries G 1)a non-exact Einstein-Weyl stucture may exist only if the (n-1)-dimensional homogeneous space G/H contains a non trivial subgroup H' that commutes with the isotropy subgroup H, 2) the extra isometry due to this Killing vector corresponds to the right-action of one of the generators of the…
I show that solutions of the SU(infinity) Toda field equation generating a fixed Einstein-Weyl space are governed by a linear equation on the Einstein-Weyl space. From this, obstructions to the existence of Toda solutions generating a given Einstein-Weyl space are found. I also give a classification of Einstein-Weyl spaces arising from the Toda equation in more than one way. This classification coincides with a class of spaces found by Ward and hence clarifies some of their properties. I end by discussing the simplest examples.
