We consider four (real or complex) dimensional hyper-Kähler metrics with a conformal symmetry K. The three-dimensional space of orbits of K is shown to have an Einstein-Weyl structure which admits a shear-free geodesics congruence for which the twist is a constant multiple of the divergence. In this case the Einstein-Weyl equations reduce down to a single second order PDE for one function. The Lax representation, Lie point symmetries, hidden symmetries and the recursion operator associated with this PDE are found, and some group invariant solutions are considered.
We briefly review the hierarchy for the hyper-Kähler equations and define a notion of symmetry for solutions of this hierarchy. A four-dimensional hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it embeds into a hierarchy with a symmetry. It is shown that a hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it admits a certain Killing spinor. We show that if the hidden symmetry is tri-holomorphic, then this is equivalent to requiring symmetry along a higher time and the hidden symmetry determines a `twistor group' action as introduced by Bielawski \cite{B00}. This leads to a construction for the …
A twistor construction of the hierarchy associated with the hyper-Kähler equations on a metric (the anti-self-dual Einstein vacuum equations, ASDVE, in four dimensions) is given. The recursion operator R is constructed and used to build an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra and in particular higher flows for the hyper-Kähler equations. It is shown that R acts on the twistor data by multiplication with a rational function. The structures are illustrated by the example of the Sparling-Tod (Eguchi-Hansen) solution. An extended space-time ${\cal N}$ is constructed whose extra dimensions corresp…
In this paper, we introduce a notion of quadratic Killing structure Jacobi operator (simply, Killing structure Jacobi operator) and its geometric meaning for real hypersurfaces in the complex two-plane Grassmannians. In addition, we give a classification theorem for Hopf real hypersurfaces with quadratic Killing structure Jacobi operator in complex two-plane Grassmannians.
Given a globally hyperbolic spacetime endowed with a complete lightlike Killing vector field and a complete Cauchy hypersurface, we characterize the points which can be connected by geodesics. A straightforward consequence is the geodesic connectedness of globally hyperbolic generalized plane waves with a complete Cauchy hypersurface.
Given a complete hypersurface isometrically immersed in an ambient manifold, in this paper we provide a lower bound for the norm of the mean curvature vector field of the immersion assuming that: 1) The ambient manifold admits a Killing submersion with unit-length Killing vector field. 2)The projection of the image of the immersion is bounded in the base manifold. 3)The hypersurface is stochastically complete, or the immersion is proper.
We construct solutions to the constraint equations in general relativity using the limit equation criterion introduced by Dahl, Humbert and the first author. We focus on solutions over compact 3-manifolds admitting a $\bS^1$-symmetry group. When the quotient manifold has genus greater than 2, we obtain strong far from CMC results.
We show that if a compact hypersurface $M \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n \geq3$, admits a non zero Killing vector field $X$ of constant length then $n$ is even and $M$ is diffeomorphic to the unit hypersphere of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. Actually, we show that $M$ is a complex ellipsoid in $\mathbb{C}^{N} = \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. As an application we give a simpler proof of a recent theorem due to S. Deshmukh \cite{De12}.
We consider a hyperkähler $8$-manifold admitting either a $U(1) \times \mathbb{R}$, or a $U(1) \times U(1)$ action, where the first factor preserves $g$ and $I$, and acts on $ω_2+iω_3$ by multiplying it by itself, while the second factor preserves $g$ and acts triholomorphically. Such data can be reduced to a single function $H$ of two complex variables and two real variables satisfying $6$ equations of Monge-Ampere type, which can be compactly written down using a Poisson bracket.
We study generalized Killing spinors on compact Einstein manifolds with positive scalar curvature. This problem is related to the existence compact Einstein hypersurfaces in manifolds with parallel spinors, or equivalently, in Riemannian products of flat spaces, Calabi-Yau, hyperkaehler, G_2 and Spin(7) manifolds.
We study the relation between the existence of null conformal Killing vector fields and existence of compatible complex and para-hypercomplex structures on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold with metric of signature (2,2). We establish first the topological types of pseudo-Hermitian surfaces admitting a nowhere vanishing null vector field. Then we show that a pair of orthogonal, pointwise linearly independent, null, conformal Killing vector fields defines a para-hyperhermitian structure and use this fact for a classification of the smooth compact four-manifolds admitting such a pair of vector fields…
We prove that any compact Cauchy horizon with constant non-zero surface gravity in a smooth vacuum spacetime is a smooth Killing horizon. The novelty here is that the Killing vector field is shown to exist on both sides of the horizon. This generalises classical results by Moncrief and Isenberg, by dropping the assumption that the metric is analytic. In previous work by Rácz and the author, the Killing vector field was constructed on the globally hyperbolic side of the horizon. In this paper, we prove a new unique continuation theorem for wave equations through smooth compact lightlike (charac…
We study the intrinsic geometry of hypersurfaces in Calabi-Yau manifolds of real dimension 6 and, more generally, SU(2)-structures on 5-manifolds defined by a generalized Killing spinor. We prove that in the real analytic case, such a 5-manifold can be isometrically embedded as a hypersurface in a Calabi-Yau manifold in a natural way. We classify nilmanifolds carrying invariant structures of this type, and present examples of the associated metrics with holonomy SU(3).
We consider four-dimensional vacuum spacetimes which admit a nonvanishing spacelike Killing field. The quotient with respect to the Killing action is a three-dimensional quotient spacetime $(M,g)$. We establish several results regarding maximal hypersurfaces (spacelike hypersurfaces of zero mean curvature) in such quotient spacetimes. First, we show that a complete noncompact maximal hypersurface must either be a cylinder $S^1 \times \mathbb{R}$ with flat metric or else conformal to the Euclidean plane $\mathbb{R}^2$. Second, we establish positivity of mass for certain maximal hypersurfaces, r…
Generalizing Riemannian theorems of Anderson-Herzlich and Biquard, we show that two $(n+1)$-dimensional stationary vacuum space-times (possibly with cosmological constant $Λ\in \R$) that coincide up to order one along a timelike hypersurface $\mycal T$ are isometric in a neighbourhood of $\mycal T$. We further prove that KIDS of $\partial M$ extend to Killing vectors near $\partial M$. In the AdS type setting, we show unique continuation near conformal infinity if the metrics have the same conformal infinity and the same undetermined term. Extension near $\partial M$ of conformal Killing vecto…
Suppose that $Σ=\partialΩ$ is the $n$-dimensional boundary, with positive (inward) mean curvature $H$, of a connected compact $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian spin manifold $(Ω^{n+1},g)$ whose scalar curvature $R\ge -n(n+1)k^2$, for some $k\textgreater{}0$. If $Σ$ admits an isometric and isospin immersion $F$ into the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb{H}^{n+1}\_{-k^2}}$, we define a quasi-local mass and prove its positivity as well as the associated rigidity statement. The proof is based on a holographic principle for the existence of an imaginary Killing spinor. For $n=2$, we also show that its limit,…
Moitvated in part by [3], in this note we obtain a rigidity result for globally hyperbolic vacuum spacetimes in arbitrary dimension that admit a timelike conformal Killing vector field. Specifically, we show that if M is a Ricci flat, timelike geodesically complete spacetime with compact Cauchy surfaces that admits a timelike conformal Killing field X, then M must split as a metric product, and X must be Killing. This gives a partial proof of the Bartnik splitting conjecture in the vacuum setting.
Simply connected 3-dimensional homogeneous manifolds $E(κ, τ)$, with 4-dimensional isometry group, have a canonical Spin$^c$ structure carrying parallel or Killing spinors. The restriction to any hypersurface of these parallel or Killing spinors allows to characterize isometric immersions of surfaces into $E(κ, τ)$. As application, we get an elementary proof of a Lawson type correspondence for constant mean curvature surfaces in $E(κ, τ)$. Real hypersurfaces of the complex projective space and the complex hyperbolic space are also characterized via Spin$^c$ spinors.
Given a Kähler manifold $M$ endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field $Z$, we construct a conical Kähler manifold $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is recovered as a Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. Similarly, given a hyper-Kähler manifold $(M,g,J_1,J_2,J_3)$ endowed with a Killing vector field $Z$, Hamiltonian with respect to the Kähler form of $J_1$ and satisfying $\mathcal{L}_ZJ_2= -2J_3$, we construct a hyper-Kähler cone $\hat{M}$ such that $M$ is a certain hyper-Kähler quotient of $\hat{M}$. In this way, we recover a theorem by Haydys. Our work is motivated by the problem of relating the supergr…
We give a spinorial characterization of isometrically immersed hypersurfaces into 4-dimensional space forms and product spaces $\M^3(κ)\times\R$, in terms of the existence of particular spinor fields, called generalized Killing spinors or equivalently solutions of a Dirac equation. This generalizes to higher dimensions several recent results for surfaces by T. Friedrich, B. Morel and the two authors. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor of a generalized Killing spinor as the second fundamental form, possibly up to a tensor depending on the ambient space. As an …
Using twistor methods, we explicitly construct all local forms of four--dimensional real analytic neutral signature anti--self--dual conformal structures $(M,[g])$ with a null conformal Killing vector. We show that $M$ is foliated by anti-self-dual null surfaces, and the two-dimensional leaf space inherits a natural projective structure. The twistor space of this projective structure is the quotient of the twistor space of $(M,[g])$ by the group action induced by the conformal Killing vector. We obtain a local classification which branches according to whether or not the conformal Killing vect…
We elaborate the tractor calculus for compatible almost CR structures (also known as strictly pseudoconvex partially integrable almost CR structures) on contact manifolds, and as an application, express the first BGG invariant differential operator $D_0$ explicitly in some cases, i.e., for some tractor connections. An interesting outcome is the fact that the "modified" adjoint tractor connection $\tilde{\nabla}$ governing infinitesimal deformations of parabolic geometries generates what we call the CR Killing operator as its first BGG operator, and actually, it does not agree with the first BG…
It is well known that any 4-dimensional hyperkahler metric with two commuting Killing fields may be obtained explicitly, via the Gibbons-Hawking Ansatz, from a harmonic function invariant under a Killing field on R^3. In this paper, we find all selfdual Einstein metrics of nonzero scalar curvature with two commuting Killing fields. They are given explicitly in terms of a local eigenfunction of the Laplacian on the hyperbolic plane. We discuss the relation of this construction to a class of selfdual spaces found by Joyce, and some Einstein-Weyl spaces found by Ward, and then show that certain `…
A Killing $p$-form on a Riemannian manifold is a $p$-form whose covariant derivative is totally anti-symmetric. In this paper we give the complete (local) description of 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (M,g) carrying non-parallel Killing 2-forms $φ$. If $M$ is connected and oriented, we show that there exists a dense open subset of $M$ on which one of the three exclusive situations holds: either $ϕ$ is everywhere degenerate and $g$ is conformal to a product metric, or $g$ is conformal to an ambikähler metric obtained via the Calabi construction from a polarized Riemannian surface, or $g$ is…
Rigidity results for asymptotically locally hyperbolic manifolds with lower bounds on scalar curvature are proved using spinor methods related to the Witten proof of the positive mass theorem. The argument is based on a study of the Dirac operator defined with respect to the Killing connection. The existence of asymptotic Killing spinors is related to the spin structure on the end. The expression for the mass is calculated and proven to vanish for conformally compact Einstein manifolds with conformal boundary a spherical space form, giving rigidity. In the 4-dimensional case, the signature of …
The simple structure of doubly torqued vectors allows for a natural characterization of doubly twisted down to warped spacetimes, as well as Kundt spacetimes down to PP waves. For the first ones the vectors are timelike, for the others they are null. We also discuss some properties, and their connection to hypersurface orthogonal conformal Killing vectors, and null Killing vectors.
A vector field on a Riemannian manifold is called conformal Killing if it generates one-parameter group of conformal transformations. The class of conformal Killing symmetric tensor fields of an arbitrary rank is a natural generalization of the class of conformal Killing vector fields, and appears in different geometric and physical problems. A symmetric tensor field is a trace-free field if the contraction of the field with the metric tensor is identically equal to zero. On a Riemannian manifold of dimension at least three, the space of trace-free conformal Killing symmetric tensor fields of …
In the present work the local form of certain Calabi-Yau metrics possessing a local Hamiltonian Killing vector is described in terms of a single non linear equation. The main assumptions are that the complex $(3,0)$-form is of the form $e^{ik}\widetildeΨ$, where $\widetildeΨ$ is preserved by the Killing vector, and that the space of the orbits of the Killing vector is, for fixed value of the momentum map coordinate, a complex 4-manifold, in such a way that the complex structure of the 4-manifold is part of the complex structure of the complex 3-fold. The link with the solution generating techn…
BPS solutions of 5-dimensional supergravity correspond to certain gradient flows on the product M x N of a quaternionic-Kaehler manifold M of negative scalar curvature and a very special real manifold N of dimension n >=0. Such gradient flows are generated by the `energy function' f = P^2, where P is a (bundle-valued) moment map associated to n+1 Killing vector fields on M. We calculate the Hessian of f at critical points and derive some properties of its spectrum for general quaternionic-Kaehler manifolds. For the homogeneous quaternionic-Kaehler manifolds we prove more specific results depen…
We review the map between hypercomplex manifolds that admit a closed homothetic Killing vector (i.e. `conformal hypercomplex' manifolds) and quaternionic manifolds of 1 dimension less. This map is related to a method for constructing supergravity theories using superconformal techniques. An explicit relation between the structure of these manifolds is presented, including curvatures and symmetries. An important role is played by `ξtransformations', relating connections on quaternionic manifolds, and a new type `\hatξtransformations' relating complex structures on conformal hypercomplex manifol…
We review the general properties of target spaces of hypermultiplets, which are quaternionic-like manifolds, and discuss the relations between these manifolds and their symmetry generators. We explicitly construct a one-to-one map between conformal hypercomplex manifolds (i.e. those that have a closed homothetic Killing vector) and quaternionic manifolds of one quaternionic dimension less. An important role is played by 'ξ-transformations', relating complex structures on conformal hypercomplex manifolds and connections on quaternionic manifolds. In this map, the subclass of conformal hyper-Kae…
