We briefly review the hierarchy for the hyper-Kähler equations and define a notion of symmetry for solutions of this hierarchy. A four-dimensional hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it embeds into a hierarchy with a symmetry. It is shown that a hyper-Kähler metric admits a hidden symmetry if it admits a certain Killing spinor. We show that if the hidden symmetry is tri-holomorphic, then this is equivalent to requiring symmetry along a higher time and the hidden symmetry determines a `twistor group' action as introduced by Bielawski \cite{B00}. This leads to a construction for the solution to the hierarchy in terms of linear equations and variants of the generalised Legendre transform for the hyper-Kähler metric itself given by Ivanov & Rocek \cite{IR96}. We show that the ALE spaces are examples of hyper-Kähler metrics admitting three tri-holomorphic Killing spinors. These metrics are in this sense analogous to the 'finite gap' solutions in soliton theory. Finally we extend the concept of a hierarchy from that of \cite{DM00} for the four-dimensional hyper-Kähler equations to a generalisation of the conformal anti-self-duality equations and briefly discuss hidden symmetries for these equations.
A twistor construction of the hierarchy associated with the hyper-Kähler equations on a metric (the anti-self-dual Einstein vacuum equations, ASDVE, in four dimensions) is given. The recursion operator R is constructed and used to build an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra and in particular higher flows for the hyper-Kähler equations. It is shown that R acts on the twistor data by multiplication with a rational function. The structures are illustrated by the example of the Sparling-Tod (Eguchi-Hansen) solution. An extended space-time ${\cal N}$ is constructed whose extra dimensions corresp…
In this paper we continue our study of the fourth order transgression on hyperähler manifolds introduced in the previous paper. We give a local construction for the fourth-order transgression of the Chern character form of an arbitrary vector bundle supplied with a self-dual connection on a four dimensional hyperkähler manifold. The construction is based on the harmonic twistor formalism. Remarkably, the resulted expression for the fourth order transgression is given in terms of the determinant of the $\bar{\partial}$-operator defined on fibers of the twistor fibration.
The target space of a (4,0) supersymmetric two-dimensional sigma model with Wess-Zumino term has a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy contained in Sp(n)Sp(1) (resp. Sp(n)), QKT (resp. HKT)-spaces. We study the geometry of QKT, HKT manifold and their twistor spaces. We show that the Swann bundle of a QKT manifold admits a HKT structure with special symmetry if and only if the twistor space of the QKT manifold admits an almost hermitian structure with totally skew-symmetric Nijenhuis tensor, thus connecting two structures arising from quantum field theories and supersymm…
Let M be a hyperkähler manifold. The S^2-family of complex structures compatible with the hyperkähler metric can be assembled into a single complex structure on Z=MxS^2; the resulting complex manifold is known as the twistor space of M. We describe the analogous construction for generalized complex structures in the sense of Hitchin. Specifically, we exhibit a natural S^2xS^2-family of generalized complex structures compatible with the hyperkähler metric, and assemble them into a single generalized complex structure on X=MxS^2xS^2. We call the resulting generalized complex manifold the general…
A theorem of Kuranishi tells us that the moduli space of complex structures on any smooth compact manifold is always locally a finite-dimensional space. Globally, however, this is simply not true; we display examples in which the moduli space contains a sequence of regions for which the local dimension tends to infinity. These examples naturally arise from the twistor theory of hyper-Kaehler manifolds.
A hypercomplex structure on a differentiable manifold consists of three integrable almost complex structures that satisfy quaternionic relations. If, in addition, there exists a metric on the manifold which is Hermitian with respect to the three structures, and such that the corresponding Hermitian forms are closed, the manifold is said to be hyperkaehler. In the paper "Non-Hermitian Yang-Mills connections", Kaledin and Verbitsky proved that the twistor space of a hyperkaehler manifold admits a balanced metric; these were first studied in the article "On the existence of special metrics in com…
We construct an explicit example of a stable bundle on the twistor space $\mathrm{Tw}(M)$ of a hyperkähler manifold $M$ whose restrictions to all the fibres of the natural twistor projection $π: \mathrm{Tw}(M) \to \mathbb{CP}^1$ are nonstable. We also describe the relationship between bundles on $\mathrm{Tw}(M)$ that do not have subsheaves of strictly lower rank and bundles that stably restrict to the fibres of $π$, and announce a result whose proof will appear in a forthcoming paper.
Four-dimensional quaternion-Kahler metrics, or equivalently self-dual Einstein spaces M, are known to be encoded locally into one real function h subject to Przanowski's Heavenly equation. We elucidate the relation between this description and the usual twistor description for quaternion-Kahler spaces. In particular, we show that the same space M can be described by infinitely many different solutions h, associated to different complex (local) submanifolds on the twistor space, and therefore to different (local) integrable complex structures on M. We also study quaternion-Kahler deformations o…
We study the holomorphic vector bundles E over the twistor space Tw(M) of a compact simply connected hyperkähler manifold $M$. We give a characterization of the semistability condition for E in terms of its restrictions to the holomorphic sections of the holomorphic twistor projection π:Tw(M)\rightarrow CP^1. It is shown that if E admits a holomorphic connection, then E is holomorphically trivial and the holomorphic connection on E is trivial as well. For any irreducible vector bundle E on Tw(M) of prime rank, we prove that its restriction to the generic fibre of πis stable. On the other hand,…
Given a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ on the twistor space $\mathrm{Tw}(M)$ of a simple hyperkähler manifold $M$, we view it as a family of bundles $\left\{E_I\right\}$ on the fibres $π^{-1}(I)$ of the twistor projection $π: \mathrm{Tw}(M) \to \mathbb{CP}^1$, and study the relationship between stability of $E$ and its fibrewise stability. We verify that the argument of Teleman establishing the Zariski openness of stability and semi-stability in families of bundles applies in the case of the family $\left\{E_I\right\}$. We prove a partial converse to a result of Kaledin and Verbitsky, showing t…
We find that the target space of two-dimensional (4,0) supersymmetric sigma models with torsion coupled to (4,0) supergravity is a QKT manifold, that is, a quaternionic Kähler manifold with torsion. We give four examples of geodesically complete QKT manifolds one of which is a generalisation of the LeBrun geometry. We then construct the twistor space associated with a QKT manifold and show that under certain conditions it is a Kähler manifold with a complex contact structure. We also show that, for every 4k-dimensional QKT manifold, there is an associated 4(k+1)-dimensional hyper-Kähler one.
We study Yang-Mills connections on holomorphic bundles over complex Kähler manifolds of arbitrary dimension, in the spirit of Hitchin's and Simpson's study of flat connections. The space of non-Hermitian Yang-Mills (NHYM) connections has dimension twice the space of Hermitian Yang-Mills connections, and is locally isomorphic to the complexification of the space of Hermitian Yang-Mills connections (which is, by Uhlenbeck and Yau, the same as the space of stable bundles). Further, we study the NHYM connections over hyperkähler manifolds. We construct direct and inverse twistor transform from NHY…
We compute the hessian of the natural Hermitian form successively on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold, on the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Riemannian manifold and on the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähler manifold. We show a strong convexity property of the cycle space of twistor lines on the Calabi family of a hyperkähler manifold. We also prove convexity properties of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Einstein manifold of non-positive scalar curvature and of the 1-cycle space of the twistor space of a quaternionic Kähle…
A hyperkähler manifold $M$ has a family of induced complex structures indexed by a two-dimensional sphere $S^2 \cong \mathbb{CP}^1$. The twistor space of $M$ is a complex manifold $Tw(M)$ together with a natural holomorphic projection $Tw(M) \to \mathbb{CP}^1$, whose fiber over each point of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ is a copy of $M$ with the corresponding induced complex structure. We remove one point from this sphere (corresponding to one fiber in the twistor space),and for the case of $M = \mathbb{R}^{4n}$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, equipped with the standard hyperkähler structure, we construct one quantizat…
We extend the twistor methods developed in our earlier work on linear deformations of hyperkahler manifolds [arXiv:0806.4620] to the case of quaternionic-Kahler manifolds. Via Swann's construction, deformations of a 4d-dimensional quaternionic-Kahler manifold $M$ are in one-to-one correspondence with deformations of its $4d+4$-dimensional hyperkahler cone $S$. The latter can be encoded in variations of the complex symplectomorphisms which relate different locally flat patches of the twistor space $Z_S$, with a suitable homogeneity condition that ensures that the hyperkahler cone property is pr…
Inspired by the work of Leung-Wan, we study the mean curvature flow in hyperkähler manifolds starting from hyper-Lagrangian submanifolds, a class of middle dimensional submanifolds, which contains the class of complex Lagrangian submanifolds. For each hyper-Lagrangian submanifold, we define a new energy concept called the "twistor energy" by means of the associated twistor family (i.e. 2-sphere of complex structures). We will show that the mean curvature flow starting at any hyper-Lagrangian submanifold with sufficiently small twistor energy will exist for all time and converge to a complex La…
The Legendre transform and its generalizations, originally found in supersymmetric sigma-models, are techniques that can be used to give constructions of hyperkahler metrics. We give a twistor space interpretation to the generalizations of the Legendre transform construction. The Atiyah-Hitchin metric on the moduli space of two monopoles is used as a detailed example.
In this expository paper we review some twistor techniques and recall the problem of finding compact differentiable manifolds that can carry both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures. Such examples were constructed independently by M. Atiyah, A. Blanchard and E. Calabi in the $1950$'s. In the $1980$'s V. Tsanov gave an example of a simply connected manifold that admits both Kähler and non-Kähler complex structures - the twistor space of a $K3$ surface. Here we show that the quaternion twistor space of a hyperkähler manifold has the same property.
We investigate various limits of the twistor spaces associated to the self-dual metrics on n CP ^2, the connected sum of the complex projective planes, constructed by C. LeBrun. In particular, we explicitly present the following 3 kinds of degenerations whose limits of the metrics are: (a) LeBrun metrics on (n-1) CP ^2$, (b) (Another) LeBrun metrics on the total space of the line bundle O(-n) over CP ^1 (c) The hyper-Kaehler metrics on the small resolution of rational double points of type A_{n-1}, constructed by Gibbons and Hawking.
It is shown that Einstein-Weyl (EW) equations in 2+1 dimensions contain the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation as a special case: If an EW structure admits a constant weighted vector then it is locally given by $h=d y^2-4d xd t-4ud t^2, ν=-4u_xd t$, where $u=u(x, y, t)$ satisfies the dKP equation $(u_t-uu_x)_x=u_{yy}$. Linearised solutions to the dKP equation are shown to give rise to four-dimensional anti-self-dual conformal structures with symmetries. All four-dimensional hyper-Kähler metrics in signature $(++--)$ for which the self-dual part of the derivative of a Killing …
The twistor space of the moduli space of solutions of Hitchin's self-duality equations can be identified with the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of $λ$-connections. We use real projective structures on Riemann surfaces to prove the existence of new components of real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space. Applying the twistorial construction we show the existence of new hyper-Kähler manifolds associated to any compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq2$. These hyper-Kähler manifolds can be considered as moduli spaces of (certain) singular solutions of the self-duality equations.
We study general linear perturbations of a class of 4d real-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds obtainable by the (generalized) Legendre transform method. Using twistor methods, we show that deformations can be encoded in a set of holomorphic functions of 2d+1 variables, as opposed to the functions of d+1 variables controlling the unperturbed metric. Such deformations generically break all tri-holomorphic isometries of the unperturbed metric. Geometrically, these functions generate the symplectomorphisms which relate local complex Darboux coordinate systems in different patches of the twistor sp…
The hyper-CR Einstein-Weyl structures on $\R^3$ can be described in terms of the solutions to the dispersionless Hirota equation. In the present paper we show that simple geometric constructions on the associated twistor space lead to deformations of the Hirota equation that have been introduced recently by B. Kruglikov and A. Panasyuk. Our method produces also the hyper-CR equation and can be applied to other geometric structures related to different twistor constructions.
This is the first in a series of papers in which we develop a twistor-based method of constructing hyperkaehler metrics from holomorphic functions and elliptic curves. As an application, we revisit the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold and derive in an explicit holomorphic coordinate basis closed-form formulas for, among other things, the metric, the holomorphic symplectic form and all three Kaehler potentials.
For a fixed prequantum line bundle $L$ over a hyperKähler manifold $X$, we find a natural $\operatorname{Sp}(1)$-action on $Ω^*(X, L)$ intertwining a twistor family of $\operatorname{Spin}^{\operatorname{c}}$-Dirac Laplacians on the spaces of $L$-valued $(0, *)$-forms on $X$, noting that $L$ is holomorphic for only one complex structure in the twistor family. This establishes a geometric quantization of $X$ via Gukov-Witten brane quantization and leads to a proposal of a mathematical definition of $\operatorname{Hom}(\overline{\mathcal{B}}_{\operatorname{cc}}, \mathcal{B}_{\operatorname{cc}})$…
We exploit the correspondence between the three-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl geometries of the hyper-CR type, and the Veronese webs to show that the former structures are locally given in terms of solutions to the dispersionless Hirota equation. We also demonstrate how to construct hyper-CR Einstein--Weyl structures by Kodaira deformations of the flat twistor space $T\CP^1$, and how to recover the pencil of Poisson structures in five dimensions illustrating the method by an example of the Veronese web on the Heisenberg group.
The purpose of this article is to review some recent results on the geometry of neutral signature metrics in dimension four and their twistor spaces. The following topics are considered: Neutral Kähler and hyperkähler surfaces, Walker metrics, Neutral anti-self-dual 4-manifolds and projective structures, Twistor spaces of neutral metrics.
We use the twistorial construction of D-instantons in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theory to compute an explicit expression for the metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space affected by these non-perturbative corrections. In this way we obtain an exact quaternion-Kahler metric which is a non-trivial deformation of the local c-map. In the four-dimensional case corresponding to the universal hypermultiplet, our metric fits the Tod ansatz and provides an exact solution of the continuous Toda equation. We also analyze the fate of the curvature singularity of the perturbative metr…
We use twistor methods to promote Namikawa's universal Poisson deformations of conic affine symplectic singularities to families of hyperkähler structures deforming hyperkähler cone metrics. The metrics we produce are generally incomplete, but for specific classes of hyperkähler cones, even these incomplete metrics have some interest and applications: we study in detail the case of the nilpotent cone of a simple complex Lie algebra, with applications to hyperkähler metrics with symmetries and hyperkähler quotients, and the case of Kleinian singularities, with applications to codimension-4 sing…
We study hyperkahler metrics and hyperholomorphic connections of Hitchin's moduli spaces after Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke. Their construction via the twistor technique produces intricate wall crossing behaviors. For certain four dimensional Hitchin's moduli spaces local models and degeneration to local models near singular fibers of the Hitchin's fibration are understood.
In this paper we propose and investigate in full generality new notions of (continuous, non-isometric) symmetry on hyperkähler spaces. These can be grouped into two categories, corresponding to the two basic types of continuous hyperkähler isometries which they deform: tri-Hamiltonian isometries, on one hand, and rotational isometries, on the other. The first category of deformations gives rise to Killing spinors and generate what are known as hidden hyperkähler symmetries. The second category gives rise to hyperholomorphic line bundles over the hyperkähler manifolds on which they are defined …
A set of canonical parahermitian connections on an almost paraHermitian manifold is defined. ParaHermitian version of the Apostolov-Gauduchon generalization of the Goldberg-Sachs theorem in General Relativity is given. It is proved that the Nijenhuis tensor of a Nearly paraKähler manifolds is parallel with respect to the canonical connection. Salamon's twistor construction on quaternionic manifold is adapted to the paraquaternionic case. A hyper-paracomplex structure is constructed on Kodaira-Thurston (properly elliptic) surfaces as well as on the Inoe surfaces modeled on $Sol^4_1$. A locally …
In 2009 Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke presented a new construction of hyperkähler metrics on the total spaces of certain complex integrable systems, represented as a torus fibration $\mathcal{M}$ over a base space $\mathcal{B}$, except for a divisor $D$ in $\mathcal{B}$, in which the torus fiber degenerates into a nodal torus. The hyperkähler metric $g$ is obtained via solutions $\mathcal{X}_γ$ of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We interpret the Kontsevich-Soibelman Wall Crossing Formula as an isomonodromic deformation of a family of RH problems, therefore guaranteeing continuity of $\mathcal{X}_γ$ at…
We use the theory of Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke to construct a set of Darboux coordinates on the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ of weakly parabolic $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-Higgs bundles. For generic Higgs bundles ($\mathcal{E},RΦ)$ with $R\gg 0$ the coordinates are shown to be dominated by a leading term that is given by the coordinates for a corresponding simpler space of limiting configurations and we prove that the deviation from the limiting term is given by a remainder that is exponentially suppressed in $R$. We then use this result to solve an associated Riemann-Hilbert problem and construct a tw…
