We investigate evolution equations for anomalous diffusion employing fractional derivatives in space and time. Linkage between the space-time variables leads to a new type of fractional derivative operator. Fractional diffusion equations account for typical "anomalous" features which are observed in many systems, e.g. in the case of dispersive transport in amorphous semiconductors, liquid crystals, polymers, proteins and biosystems. In contrast to Gaussian diffusion, fractional diffusion is related to LEVY STABLE NON-GAUSSIAN PROCESSES. The typical features of the processes are heavy tails of probability density distributions. Conservation laws in relation to fractional operators are discussed. The next objective of this paper is an application of main rules of fractional calculus, fractional Laplacians, factorization of the Helmholtz equation to obtain four pairs of fractional eigenfunctions allowing to construct a solution to the well known half-plane diffraction problems. Factorizing the Leontovich-Fock equation, (parabolic wave equation-PWE), we determine semi-differential fractional solutions, which allow us to find paraxial solutions for given beam boundary conditions.
This paper presents a better approach to model an engineering problem in fractal-time space based on local fractional calculus. Some examples are given to elucidate to establish governing equations with local fractional derivative.
This paper is in continuation of the authors' recently published paper (Journal of Mathematical Physics 55(2014)083519) in which computational solutions of an unified reaction-diffusion equation of distributed order associated with Caputo derivatives as the time-derivative and Riesz-Feller derivative as space derivative is derived. In the present paper, computable solutions of distributed order fractional reaction-diffusion equations associated with generalized Riemann-Liouville derivatives of fractional orders as the time-derivative and Riesz-Feller fractional derivative as the space derivati…
Fractional variational approach has gained much attention in recent years. There are famous fractional derivatives such as Caputo derivative, Riesz derivative and Riemann-Liouville derivative. Several versions of fractional variational principles are proposed. However, it becomes difficult to apply the existing fractional variational theories to fractional differential models, due to the definitions of fractional variational derivatives which not only contain the left fractional derivatives but also appear right ones. In this paper, a new definition of fractional variational derivative is intr…
The Liouville equation, first Bogoliubov hierarchy and Vlasov equations with derivatives of non-integer order are derived. Liouville equation with fractional derivatives is obtained from the conservation of probability in a fractional volume element. This equation is used to obtain Bogoliubov hierarchy and fractional kinetic equations with fractional derivatives. Statistical mechanics of fractional generalization of the Hamiltonian systems is discussed. Fractional kinetic equation for the system of charged particles are considered.
The fractional Hamiltonian analysis of 1+1 dimensional field theory is investigated and the fractional Ostrogradski's formulation is obtained. The fractional path integral of both simple harmonic oscillator with an acceleration-squares part and a damped oscillator are analyzed. The classical results are obtained when fractional derivatives are replaced with the integer order derivatives.
In this paper we develop a fractional Hamiltonian formulation for dynamic systems defined in terms of fractional Caputo derivatives. Expressions for fractional canonical momenta and fractional canonical Hamiltonian are given, and a set of fractional Hamiltonian equations are obtained. Using an example, it is shown that the canonical fractional Hamiltonian and the fractional Euler-Lagrange formulations lead to the same set of equations.
Fractional mechanics describes both conservative and non-conservative systems. The fractional variational principles gained importance in studying the fractional mechanics and several versions are proposed. In classical mechanics the equivalent Lagrangians play an important role because they admit the same Euler-Lagrange equations. By adding a total time derivative of a suitable function to a given classical Lagrangian or by multiplying with a constant the Lagrangian we obtain the same equations of motion. In this study, the fractional discrete Lagrangians which differs by a fractional derivat…
The objective of this paper is to derive analytical solutions of fractional order Laplace, Poisson and Helmholtz equations in two variables derived from the corresponding standard equations in two dimensions by replacing the integer order partial derivatives with fractional Riesz-Feller derivative and generalized Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative recently defined by Hilfer. The Fourier-Laplace transform method is employed to obtain the solutions in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions, Fox $H$-function and an integral operator containing a Mittag-Leffler function in the kernel. Results for …
In the present paper, a generalized local Taylor formula with the local fractional derivatives (LFDs) is proposed based on the local fractional calculus (LFC). From the fractal geometry point of view, the theory of local fractional integrals and derivatives has been dealt with fractal and continuously non-differentiable functions, and has been successfully applied in engineering problems. It points out the proof of the generalized local fractional Taylor formula, and is devoted to the applications of the generalized local fractional Taylor formula to the generalized local fractional series and…
This paper deals with the investigation of the computational solutions of an unified fractional reaction-diffusion equation, which is obtained from the standard diffusion equation by replacing the time derivative of first order by the generalized Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative defined in Hilfer et al. , and the space derivative of second order by the Riesz-Feller fractional derivative, and adding a function $ϕ(x,t)$. The solution is derived by the application of the Laplace and Fourier transforms in a compact and closed form in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions. The main result obtain…
On a series of examples from the field of viscoelasticity we demonstrate that it is possible to attribute physical meaning to initial conditions expressed in terms of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives, and that it is possible to obtain initial values for such initial conditions by appropriate measurements or observations.
The link between the treatments of constrained systems with fractional derivatives by using both Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulations is studied. It is shown that both treatments for systems with linear velocities are equivalent.
In this paper we consider space-time fractional telegraph equations, where the time derivatives are intended in the sense of Hilfer and Hadamard while the space fractional derivatives are meant in the sense of Riesz-Feller. We provide the Fourier transforms of the solutions of some Cauchy problems for these fractional equations. Probabilistic interpretations of some specific cases are also provided.
We prove Euler-Lagrange fractional equations and sufficient optimality conditions for problems of the calculus of variations with functionals containing both fractional derivatives and fractional integrals in the sense of Riemann-Liouville.
We consider some possible approaches to the fractional-order generalization of definition of variation (functional) derivative. Some problems of formulation of a fractional-order variational derivative are discussed. To give a consistent definition of the fractional-order variations, we use a fractional generalization of Gateaux differential.
The Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals and derivatives are generalized for cases when fractional exponent $d$ are functions of space and times coordinates (i.e. $d=d({\bf r}(t),t)$).
We propose a new fractional derivative, the Hilfer-Katugampola fractional derivative. Motivated by the Hilfer derivative this formulation interpolates the well-known fractional derivatives of Hilfer, Hilfer-Hadamard, Riemann-Liouville, Hadamard, Caputo, Caputo-Hadamard, Liouville, Weyl, generalized and Caputo-type. As an application, we consider a nonlinear fractional differential equation with an initial condition using this new formulation. We show that this equation is equivalent to a Volterra integral equation and demonstrate the existence and uniqueness of solution to the nonlinear initia…
The definition of the local fractional derivative has been generalised to the orders beyond the critical order. This makes it possible to retain more terms in the local fractional Taylor expansion leading to better approximation. This also extends the validity of the product rule.
The quantum analogs of the derivatives with respect to coordinates q_k and momenta p_k are commutators with operators P_k and $Q_k. We consider quantum analogs of fractional Riemann-Liouville and Liouville derivatives. To obtain the quantum analogs of fractional Riemann-Liouville derivatives, which are defined on a finite interval of the real axis, we use a representation of these derivatives for analytic functions. To define a quantum analog of the fractional Liouville derivative, which is defined on the real axis, we can use the representation of the Weyl quantization by the Fourier transfor…
This paper deals with the investigation of the computational solutions of an unified fractional reaction-diffusion equation, which is obtained from the standard diffusion equation by replacing the time derivative of first order by the generalized fractional time-derivative defined by Hilfer (2000), the space derivative of second order by the Riesz-Feller fractional derivative and adding the function phi(x,t) which is a nonlinear function overning reaction. The solution is derived by the application of the Laplace and Fourier transforms in a compact and closed form in terms of the H-function. T…
We examine the fractional derivative of composite functions and present a generalization of the product and chain rules for the Caputo fractional derivative. These results are especially important for physical and biological systems that exhibit multiple spatial and temporal scales, such as porous materials and clusters of neurons, in which transport phenomena are governed by a fractional derivative of slowly varying parameters given in terms of elementary functions. Both the product and chain rules of the Caputo fractional derivative are obtained from the expansion of the fractional derivativ…
The identification of the right order of the equation in applied fractional modeling plays an important role. In this paper we consider an inverse problem for determining the order of time fractional derivative in a subdiffusion equation with an arbitrary second order elliptic differential operator. We prove that the additional information about the solution at a fixed time instant at a monitoring location, as "the observation data", identifies uniquely the order of the fractional derivative.
Lie group method provides an efficient tool to solve a differential equation. This paper suggests a fractional partner for fractional partial differential equations using a fractional characteristic method. A space-time fractional diffusion equation is used as an example to illustrate the effectiveness of the Lie group method.
In this paper, we investigate the anomalous dispersive relations, inverse scattering transform with a Riemann-Hilbert (RH) problem, and fractional multi-solitons of the integrable combined fractional higher-order mKdV (fhmKdV) hierarchy, including the fractional mKdV (fmKdV), fractional fifth-order mKdV (f5mKdV), fractional combined third-fifth-order mKdV (f35mKdV) equations, etc., which can be featured via completeness of squared scalar eigenfunctions of the ZS spectral problem. We construct a matrix RH problem to present three types of fractional N-solitons illustrating anomalous dispersions…
The aim of this tutorial survey is to revisit the basic theory of relaxation processes governed by linear differential equations of fractional order. The fractional derivatives are intended both in the Rieamann-Liouville sense and in the Caputo sense. After giving a necessary outline of the classical theory of linear viscoelasticity, we contrast these two types of fractional derivatives in their ability to take into account initial conditions in the constitutive equations of fractional order. We also provide historical notes on the origins of the Caputo derivative and on the use of fractional …
A type of fractional derivative, referred to as α-derivative, is studied. The α-derivative of fractional type obeys Leibnitz rule. Based on the definition of α-derivative the operations of analysis and differential geometry are studied It was recently proved, that this variant of introduction of the derivative leads to a new scaling of the common Leibniz derivative, but not to a alternative type of derivation. In other words, all derivatives, that satisfy the Leibniz rule, are algebraically equivalent.
In the present work, we formulate a necessary condition for functionals with Lagrangians depending on fractional derivatives of differentiable functions to possess an extremum. The Euler-Lagrange equation we obtained generalizes previously known results in the literature and enables us to construct simple Lagrangians for nonlinear systems. As examples of application, we obtain Lagrangians for some chaotic dynamical systems.
In a rectangular domain, a boundary-value problem is considered for a mixed-type equation with a regularized Caputo-like counterpart of hyper-Bessel differential operator and the bi-ordinal Hilfer's fractional derivative. Using the method of separation of variables, Laplace transform, a unique solvability of the considered problem has been established. Moreover, we have found the explicit solution of initial problems for a differential equation with the bi-ordinal Hilfer's derivative and regularized Caputo-like counterpart of the hyper-Bessel differential operator with the non-zero starting po…
We consider the fractional generalization of nonholonomic constraints defined by equations with fractional derivatives and provide some examples. The corresponding equations of motion are derived using variational principle.
This paper, that will appear in the Notices of the AMS, begins with a brief historical account of the beginnings of fractional calculus and the crucial roles played by Leibniz and Fourier. Fourier's definition of fractional derivative is introduced and unpacked by using the modern technique known as the method of semigroups. Recent advances on the theory of fractional derivatives are presented. Furthermore, we address some questions that have been raised by some in the scientific community. Finally, we present three different applications: population growth with memory, viscoleastic materials …
