The paper develops Newton's method of finding multiple eigenvalues with one Jordan block and corresponding generalized eigenvectors for matrices dependent on parameters. It computes the nearest value of a parameter vector with a matrix having a multiple eigenvalue of given multiplicity. The method also works in the whole matrix space (in the absence of parameters). The approach is based on the versal deformation theory for matrices. Numerical examples are given. The implementation of the method in MATLAB code is available.
A systematic analytic approach to the evaluation of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the 5D discrete number operator is formulated. This approach is essentially based on the use of the symmetricity of 5D discrete Fourier transform operator with respect to the discrete reflection operator.
A Toeplitz matrix is one in which the matrix elements are constant along diagonals. The Fisher-Hartwig matrices are much-studied singular matrices in the Toeplitz family. The matrices are defined for all orders, $N$. They are parametrized by two constants, $α$ and $β$. Their spectrum of eigenvalues has a simple asymptotic form in the limit as $N$ goes to infinity. Here we study the structure of their eigenvalues and eigenvectors in this limiting case. We specialize to the case $0<α<|β|<1$, where the behavior is particularly simple.

We extend the so-called "single ring theorem"[1], also known as the Haagerup-Larsen theorem[2], by showing that in the limit when the size of the matrix goes to infinity a particular correlator between left and right eigenvectors of the relevant non-hermitian matrix $X$, being the spectral density weighted by the squared eigenvalue condition number, is given by a simple formula involving only the radial spectral cumulative distribution function of $X$. We show that this object allows to calculate the conditional expectation of the squared eigenvalue condition number. We give examples and we pr…
We study eigenvectors in the deformed Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices $H=W\tilde{H}W$, where $\tilde{H}$ is a random matrix from Gaussian unitary ensemble and $W$ is a deterministic diagonal matrix with positive entries. Using the supersymmetry approach we calculate analytically the moments and the distribution function of the eigenvectors components for a generic matrix $W$. We show that specific choices of $W$ can modify significantly the nature of the eigenvectors changing them from extended to critical to localized. Our analytical results are supported by numerical simulations…
We study the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of $N\times N$ structured random matrices of the form $H = W\tilde{H}W+D$ with diagonal matrices $D$ and $W$ and $\tilde{H}$ from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. Using the supersymmetry technique we derive general asymptotic expressions for the density of states and the moments of the eigenvectors. We find that the eigenvectors remain ergodic under very general assumptions, but a degree of their ergodicity depends strongly on a particular choice of $W$ and $D$. For a special case of $D=0$ and random $W$, we show that the eigenvectors can become crit…
It is shown that certain ensembles of random matrices with entries that vanish outside a band around the diagonal satisfy a localization condition on the resolvent which guarantees that eigenvectors have strong overlap with a vanishing fraction of standard basis vectors, provided the band width $W$ raised to a power $μ$ remains smaller than the matrix size $N$. For a Gaussian band ensemble, with matrix elements given by i.i.d. centered Gaussians within a band of width $W$, the estimate $μ\le 8$ holds.
We analyze statistics for eigenvector entries of heavy-tailed random symmetric matrices (also called Lévy matrices) whose associated eigenvalues are sufficiently small. We show that the limiting law of any such entry is non-Gaussian, given by the product of a normal distribution with another random variable that depends on the location of the corresponding eigenvalue. Although the latter random variable is typically non-explicit, for the median eigenvector it is given by the inverse of a one-sided stable law. Moreover, we show that different entries of the same eigenvector are asymptotically i…
We prove that any finite collection of quadratic forms (overlaps) of general deterministic matrices and eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix has joint Gaussian fluctuations. This can be viewed as the random matrix analogue of the Berry random wave conjecture.
The power-law random banded matrices and the ultrametric random matrices are investigated numerically in the regime where eigenstates are extended but all integer matrix moments remain finite in the limit of large matrix dimensions. Though in this case standard analytical tools are inapplicable, we found that in all considered cases eigenvector distributions are extremely well described by the generalised hyperbolic distribution which differs considerably from the usual Porter-Thomas distribution but shares with it certain universal properties.
The properties of the first (largest) eigenvalue and its eigenvector (first eigenvector) are investigated for large sparse random symmetric matrices that are characterized by bimodal degree distributions. In principle, one should be able to accurately calculate them by solving a functional equation concerning auxiliary fields which come out in an analysis based on replica/cavity methods. However, the difficulty in analytically solving this equation makes an accurate calculation infeasible in practice. To overcome this problem, we develop approximation schemes on the basis of two exceptionally …
The diagonalization of matrices may be the top priority in the application of modern physics. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate that, for real symmetric random matrices with non-positive off-diagonal elements, a universal scaling between the eigenvector and matrix elements exists. Namely, each element of the eigenvector of ground states linearly correlates with the sum of matrix elements in the corresponding row. Although the conclusion is obtained based on the random matrices, the linear relationship still keeps for regular matrices, in which off-diagonal elements are non-positive. Th…
We prove a local law and eigenvector delocalization for general Wigner-type matrices. Our methods allow us to get the best possible interval length and optimal eigenvector delocalization in the dense case, and the first results of such kind for the sparse case down to $p=\frac{g(n)\log n}{n}$ with $g(n)\to\infty$. We specialize our results to the case of the Stochastic Block Model, and we also obtain a local law for the case when the number of classes is unbounded.
We analyze the distribution of eigenvectors for mesoscopic, mean-field perturbations of diagonal matrices in the bulk of the spectrum. Our results apply to a generalized $N\times N$ Rosenzweig-Porter model. We prove that the eigenvectors entries are asymptotically Gaussian with a specific variance, localizing them onto a small, explicit part of the spectrum. For a well spread initial spectrum, this variance profile universally follows a heavy-tailed Cauchy distribution. In the case of smooth entries, we also obtain a strong form of quantum unique ergodicity as an overwhelming probability bound…
We consider the XXX-type and Gaudin quantum integrable models associated with the Lie algebra $gl_N$. The models are defined on a tensor product irreducible $gl_N$-modules. For each model, there exist $N$ one-parameter families of commuting operators on the tensor product, called the transfer matrices. We show that the Bethe vectors for these models, given by the algebraic nested Bethe ansatz are eigenvectors of higher transfer matrices and compute the corresponding eigenvalues.
We study random, symmetric $N \times N$ band matrices with a band of size $W$ and Bernoulli random variables as entries. This interpolates between nearest neighbour interaction $W = 1$ and Wigner matrices $W = N$. Eigenvectors are known to be localized for $W \ll N^{1/8}$, delocalized for $W \gg N^{4/5}$ and it is conjectured that the transition for the bulk occurs at $W \sim N^{1/2}$. Eigenvalues in the spectral edge change their behavior at $W \sim N^{5/6}$ but nothing is known about the associated eigenvectors. We show that up to $W \ll N^{5/7}$ any random matrix has with large probability …
When an eigenvector of a semi-bounded operator is positive, we show that a remarkably simple argument allows to obtain upper and lower bounds for its associated eigenvalue. This theorem is a substantial generalization of Barta-like inequalities and can be applied to non-necessarily purely quadratic Hamiltonians. An application for a magnetic Hamiltonian is given and the case of a discrete Schrodinger operator is also discussed. It is shown how this approach leads to some explicit bounds on the ground-state energy of a system made of an arbitrary number of attractive Coulombian particles.

We consider matrices formed by a random $N\times N$ matrix drawn from the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (or Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) plus a rank-one perturbation of strength $θ$, and focus on the largest eigenvalue, $x$, and the component, $u$, of the corresponding eigenvector in the direction associated to the rank-one perturbation. We obtain the large deviation principle governing the atypical joint fluctuations of $x$ and $u$. Interestingly, for $θ>1$, in large deviations characterized by a small value of $u$, i.e. $u<1-1/θ$, the second-largest eigenvalue pops out from the Wigner semi-circ…
We investigate eigenvector statistics of the Truncated Unitary ensemble $\mathrm{TUE}(N,M)$ in the weakly non-unitary case $M=1$, that is when only one row and column are removed. We provide an explicit description of generalized overlaps as deterministic functions of the eigenvalues, as well as a method to derive an exact formula for the expectation of diagonal overlaps (or squared eigenvalue condition numbers), conditionally on one eigenvalue. This complements recent results obtained in the opposite regime when $M \geq N$, suggesting possible extensions to $\mathrm{TUE}(N,M)$ for all values …
A deflated restarted Lanczos algorithm is given for both solving symmetric linear equations and computing eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The restarting limits the storage so that finding eigenvectors is practical. Meanwhile, the deflating from the presence of the eigenvectors allows the linear equations to generally have good convergence in spite of the restarting. Some reorthogonalization is necessary to control roundoff error, and several approaches are discussed. The eigenvectors generated while solving the linear equations can be used to help solve systems with multiple right-hand sides. Ex…
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian or symmetric random matrices with independent entries. The distribution of the $(i,j)$-th matrix element is given by a probability measure $ν_{ij}$ whose first two moments coincide with those of the corresponding Gaussian ensemble. We prove that the joint probability distribution of the components of eigenvectors associated with eigenvalues close to the spectral edge agrees with that of the corresponding Gaussian ensemble. For eigenvectors associated with bulk eigenvalues, the same conclusion holds provided the first four moments of the distribution $ν_{ij}$ c…
We study the overlaps between eigenvectors of nonnormal matrices. They quantify the stability of the spectrum, and characterize the joint eigenvalues increments under Dyson-type dynamics. Well known work by Chalker and Mehlig calculated the expectation of these overlaps for complex Ginibre matrices. For the same model, we extend their results by deriving the distribution of diagonal overlaps (the condition numbers), and their correlations. We prove: (i) convergence of condition numbers for bulk eigenvalues to an inverse Gamma distribution; more generally, we decompose the quenched overlap (i.e…
We propose a technique for calculating and understanding the eigenvalue distribution of sums of random matrices from the known distribution of the summands. The exact problem is formidably hard. One extreme approximation to the true density amounts to classical probability, in which the matrices are assumed to commute; the other extreme is related to free probability, in which the eigenvectors are assumed to be in generic positions and sufficiently large. In practice, free probability theory can give a good approximation of the density. We develop a technique based on eigenvector localization/…
We study the eigenvectors of generalized Wigner matrices with subexponential entries and prove that they delocalize at the optimal rate with overwhelming probability. We also prove high probability delocalization bounds with sharp constants. Our proof uses an analysis of the eigenvector moment flow introduced by Bourgade and Yau (2017) to bound logarithmic moments of eigenvector entries for random matrices with small Gaussian components. We then extend this control to all generalized Wigner matrices by comparison arguments based on a framework of regularized eigenvectors, level repulsion, and …
We develop a method to calculate left-right eigenvector correlations of the product of $m$ independent $N\times N$ complex Ginibre matrices. For illustration, we present explicit analytical results for the vector overlap for a couple of examples for small $m$ and $N$. We conjecture that the integrated overlap between left and right eigenvectors is given by the formula $O = 1 + (m/2)(N-1)$ and support this conjecture by analytical and numerical calculations. We derive an analytical expression for the limiting correlation density as $N\rightarrow \infty$ for the product of Ginibre matrices as we…
If $A$ is an $n \times n$ Hermitian matrix with eigenvalues $λ_1(A),\dots,λ_n(A)$ and $i,j = 1,\dots,n$, then the $j^{\mathrm{th}}$ component $v_{i,j}$ of a unit eigenvector $v_i$ associated to the eigenvalue $λ_i(A)$ is related to the eigenvalues $λ_1(M_j),\dots,λ_{n-1}(M_j)$ of the minor $M_j$ of $A$ formed by removing the $j^{\mathrm{th}}$ row and column by the formula $$ |v_{i,j}|^2\prod_{k=1;k\neq i}^{n}\left(λ_i(A)-λ_k(A)\right)=\prod_{k=1}^{n-1}\left(λ_i(A)-λ_k(M_j)\right)\,.$$ We refer to this identity as the \emph{eigenvector-eigenvalue identity} and show how this identity can also be…
In this paper, we study the random matrix model of Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) with fixed-rank (aka spiked) external source. We will focus on the critical regime of the Baik-Ben Arous-Péché (BBP) phase transition and establish the distribution of the eigenvectors associated with the leading eigenvalues. The distribution is given in terms of a determinantal point process with extended Airy kernel. Our result can be regarded as an eigenvector counterpart of the BBP eigenvalue phase transition (arXiv:math/0403022). The derivation of the distribution makes use of the recently re-discovered eig…
