It is shown that certain ensembles of random matrices with entries that vanish outside a band around the diagonal satisfy a localization condition on the resolvent which guarantees that eigenvectors have strong overlap with a vanishing fraction of standard basis vectors, provided the band width $W$ raised to a power $μ$ remains smaller than the matrix size $N$. For a Gaussian band ensemble, with matrix elements given by i.i.d. centered Gaussians within a band of width $W$, the estimate $μ\le 8$ holds.
Using our previously published algorithm, we analyze the eigenvectors of the generalized Laplacian for two metric graphs occurring in practical applications. As expected, localization of an eigenvector is rare and the network should be tuned to observe exactly localized eigenvectors. We derive the resonance conditions to obtain localized eigenvectors for various geometric configurations and their combinations to form more complicated resonant structures. These localized eigenvectors suggest a new localization indicator based on the $L_2$ norm. They also can be excited, even with leaky boundary…
We propose a technique for calculating and understanding the eigenvalue distribution of sums of random matrices from the known distribution of the summands. The exact problem is formidably hard. One extreme approximation to the true density amounts to classical probability, in which the matrices are assumed to commute; the other extreme is related to free probability, in which the eigenvectors are assumed to be in generic positions and sufficiently large. In practice, free probability theory can give a good approximation of the density. We develop a technique based on eigenvector localization/…
We prove improved bounds on how localized an eigenvector of a high girth regular graph can be, and present examples showing that these bounds are close to sharp. This study was initiated by Brooks and Lindenstrauss (2009) who relied on the observation that certain suitably normalized averaging operators on high girth graphs are hyper-contractive and can be used to approximate projectors onto the eigenspaces of such graphs. Informally, their delocalization result in the contrapositive states that for any $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$ and positive integer $k,$ if a $(d+1)-$regular graph has an eigenve…
Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of non-Hermitian tridiagonal periodic random matrices are studied by means of the Hatano-Nelson deformation. The deformed spectrum is annular-shaped, with inner radius measured by the complex Thouless formula. The inner bounding circle and the annular halo are stuctures that correspond to the two-arc and wings observed by Hatano and Nelson in deformed Hermitian models, and are explained in terms of localization of eigenstates via a spectral duality and the Argument principle.
In the presence of a confining potential $V$, the eigenfunctions of a continuous Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$ decay exponentially with the rate governed by the part of $V$ which is above the corresponding eigenvalue; this can be quantified by a method of Agmon. Analogous localization properties can also be established for the eigenvectors of a discrete Schrödinger matrix. This note shows, perhaps surprisingly, that one can replace a discrete Schrödinger matrix by \emph{any} real symmetric $Z$-matrix and still obtain eigenvector localization estimates. In the case of a real symmetric non-singula…
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with i.i.d. entries. The matrix is normalized so that the average spacing between consecutive eigenvalues is of order $1/N$. We study the connection between eigenvalue statistics on microscopic energy scales $η\ll1$ and (de)localization properties of the eigenvectors. Under suitable assumptions on the distribution of the single matrix elements, we first give an upper bound on the density of states on short energy scales of order $η\sim\log N/N$. We then prove that the density of states concentrates around the Wigner semicircle law on energy sca…
We study the semiclassical propagation of squeezed Gaußian states. We do so by considering the propagation theorem introduced by Combescure and Robert \cite{CR97} approximating the evolution generated by the Weyl-quantization of symbols $H$. We examine the particular case when the Hessian $H^{\prime\prime}(X_{t})$ evaluated at the corresponding solution $X_{t}$ of Hamilton's equations of motion is periodic in time. Under this assumption, we show that the width of the wave packet can remain small up to the Ehrenfest time. We also determine conditions for ``classical revivals'' in that case. Mor…
We prove that the local eigenvalue statistics for $d=1$ random band matrices with fixed bandwidth and, for example, Gaussian entries, is given by a Poisson point process and we identify the intensity of the process. The proof relies on an extension of the localization bounds of Schenker \cite{schenker} and the Wegner and Minami estimates. These two estimates are proved using averaging over the diagonal disorder. The new component is a proof of the uniform convergence and the smoothness of the density of states function. The limit function, known to be the semicircle law with a band-width depen…
We study a quantum walk (QW) whose time evolution is induced by a random walk (RW) first introduced by Szegedy (2004). We focus on a relation between recurrent properties of the RW and localization of the corresponding QW. We find the following two fundamental derivations of localization of the QW. The first one is the set of all the $\ell^2$ summable eigenvectors of the corresponding RW. The second one is the orthogonal complement, whose eigenvalues are $\pm 1$, of the subspace induced by the RW. In particular, as a consequence, for an infinite half line, we show that localization of the QW c…
We prove that a large class of $N\times N$ Gaussian random band matrices with band width $W$ exhibits dynamical Anderson localization at all energies when $W \ll N^{1/4}$. The proof uses the fractional moment method and an adaptive Mermin--Wagner style shift.
A perturbative formula for the lowest Lyapunov exponent of an Anderson model on a strip is presented. It is expressed in terms of an energy dependent doubly stochastic matrix, the size of which is proportional to the strip width. This matrix and the resulting perturbative expression for the Lyapunov exponent are evaluated numerically. Dependence on energy, strip width and disorder strength are thoroughly compared with the results obtained by the standard transfer matrix method. Good agreement is found for all energies in the band of the free operator and this even for quite large values of the…
Consider $N\times N$ symmetric one-dimensional random band matrices with general distribution of the entries and band width $W \geq N^{3/4+\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon>0$. In the bulk of the spectrum and in the large $N$ limit, we obtain the following results. (i) The semicircle law holds up to the scale $N^{-1+\varepsilon}$ for any $\varepsilon>0$. (ii) The eigenvalues locally converge to the point process given by the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble at any fixed energy. (iii) All eigenvectors are delocalized, meaning their ${\rm L}^\infty$ norms are all simultaneously bounded by $N^{-\fra…
We consider Hermitian and symmetric random band matrices $H$ in $d \geq 1$ dimensions. The matrix elements $H_{xy}$, indexed by $x,y \in Λ\subset \Z^d$, are independent, uniformly distributed random variables if $\abs{x-y}$ is less than the band width $W$, and zero otherwise. We prove that the time evolution of a quantum particle subject to the Hamiltonian $H$ is diffusive on time scales $t\ll W^{d/3}$. We also show that the localization length of an arbitrarily large majority of the eigenvectors is larger than a factor $W^{d/6}$ times the band width. All results are uniform in the size $\absΛ…
Matrix Models are the most effective way to describe strongly interacting systems with many degrees of freedom. They have proven successful in describing very different settings, from nuclei spectra to conduction in mesoscopic systems, from holographic models to various aspects of mathematical physics. This success reflects the existence of a large universality class for all these systems, signaled by the Wigner-Dyson statistics for the matrix eigenvalues. These models are defined in a base invariant way and this rotational symmetry has traditionally been read to imply that they describe exten…
