When an eigenvector of a semi-bounded operator is positive, we show that a remarkably simple argument allows to obtain upper and lower bounds for its associated eigenvalue. This theorem is a substantial generalization of Barta-like inequalities and can be applied to non-necessarily purely quadratic Hamiltonians. An application for a magnetic Hamiltonian is given and the case of a discrete Schrodinger operator is also discussed. It is shown how this approach leads to some explicit bounds on the ground-state energy of a system made of an arbitrary number of attractive Coulombian particles.
We propose a technique for calculating and understanding the eigenvalue distribution of sums of random matrices from the known distribution of the summands. The exact problem is formidably hard. One extreme approximation to the true density amounts to classical probability, in which the matrices are assumed to commute; the other extreme is related to free probability, in which the eigenvectors are assumed to be in generic positions and sufficiently large. In practice, free probability theory can give a good approximation of the density. We develop a technique based on eigenvector localization/…
Suppose we want to find the eigenvalues and eigenvectors for the linear operator L, and suppose that we have solved this problem for some other "nearby" operator K. In this paper we show how to represent the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of L in terms of the corresponding properties of K.
In this paper, we show that the eigenvectors of the zero Laplacian and signless Lapacian eigenvalues of a $k$-uniform hypergraph are closely related to some configured components of that hypergraph. We show that the components of an eigenvector of the zero Laplacian or signless Lapacian eigenvalue have the same modulus. Moreover, under a {\em canonical} regularization, the phases of the components of these eigenvectors only can take some uniformly distributed values in $\{\{exp}(\frac{2jπ}{k})\;|\;j\in [k]\}$. These eigenvectors are divided into H-eigenvectors and N-eigenvectors. Eigenvectors …
We study the persistence of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of perturbed eigenvalue problems in Hilbert spaces. We assume that the unperturbed problem has a nontrivial kernel of odd dimension and we prove a Rabinowitz-type global continuation result. The approach is topological, based on a notion of degree for oriented Fredholm maps of index zero between real differentiable Banach manifolds.
We revisit an archive submission by P. B. Denton, S. J. Parke, T. Tao, and X. Zhang, arXiv:1908.03795, on $n \times n$ self-adjoint matrices from the point of view of self-adjoint Dirichlet Schrödinger operators on a compact interval.
The almost Mathieu operator is the discrete Schrödinger operator $H_{α,β,θ}$ on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z})$ defined via $(H_{α,β,θ}f)(k) = f(k + 1) + f(k - 1) + β\cos(2παk + θ) f(k)$. We derive explicit estimates for the eigenvalues at the edge of the spectrum of the finite-dimensional almost Mathieu operator. We furthermore show that the (properly rescaled) $m$-th Hermite function $ϕ_m$ is an approximate eigenvector of this operator, and that it satisfies the same properties that characterize the true eigenvector associated to the $m$-th largest eigenvalue. Moreover, a properly translated and modula…
The Estrada topological index EE, based on the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix, is degenerate for cospectral graphs. By additionally considering the eigenvectors, two new topological indices are devised (RV_a and RV_b), which have reduced degeneracy for alkanes or cyclic graphs. Index RV_a shows similarity to EE in ordering of alkanes with 8 to 10 carbon atoms, whereas index RV_b is more similar to the average distance-based connectivity (Balaban index J). Inter-correlations between these four topological indices are discussed, indicating which factors have predominant influence.
It is known that the spectrum of Schrödinger operators with sparse potentials consists of singular continuous spectrum. We give a sufficient condition so that the edge of the singular continuous spectrum is not an eigenvalue and construct examples with singular continuous spectrum which have no eigenvalues and which have a single negative eigenvalue.
We review the properties of eigenvectors for the graph Laplacian matrix, aiming at predicting a specific eigenvalue/vector from the geometry of the graph. After considering classical graphs for which the spectrum is known, we focus on eigenvectors that have zero components and extend the pioneering results of Merris (1998) on graph transformations that preserve a given eigenvalue $λ$ or shift it in a simple way. These transformations enable us to obtain eigenvalues/vectors combinatorially instead of numerically; in particular we show that graphs having eigenvalues $λ= 1,2,\dots,6$ up to six ve…
In this paper, we characterize all graphs with eigenvectors of the signless Laplacian and adjacency matrices with components equal to $\{- 1, 0, 1\}.$ We extend the graph parameter max $k$-cut to square matrices and prove a general sharp upper bound, which implies upper bounds on the max $k$-cut of a graph using the smallest signless Laplacian eigenvalue, the smallest adjacency eigenvalue, and the largest Laplacian eigenvalue of the graph. In addition, we construct infinite families of extremal graphs for the obtained upper bounds.
The relationship between the Jordan structures of two matrices sufficiently close has been largely studied in the literature, among which a square matrix $A$ and its rank one updated matrix of the form $A+xb^*$ are of special interest. The eigenvalues of $A+xb^*$, where $x$ is an eigenvector of $A$ and $b$ is an arbitrary vector, were first expressed in terms of eigenvalues of $A$ by Brauer in 1952. Jordan structures of $A$ and $A+xb^*$ have been studied, and similar results were obtained when a generalized eigenvector of $A$ was used instead of an eigenvector. However, in the latter case, res…
Define a $(n^4+n^2)/2\times (n^4+n^2)/2$ symmetric $B$. $(ij)(kl)$ is an index where $i,j,k,l\in [n]$, $(ab)$ is an unordered pair and $(kl)$ is an ordered pair when $i\neq j$, otherwise it is also an unordered pair. $B((ij)(kl),(ab)(xy))$ is equal to the number of permutations of S_n in which $\min\{i,j\}$ maps to $k$, $\max\{i,j\}$ maps to $l$, $\min\{a,b\}$ maps to $x$ and $\max\{a,b\}$ maps to $y$. We will show that $B$ has four distinct eigenvalues: $(3/2)n!$, $n(n-3)!$, $(n-1)!/(n-3)$, $2n(n-2)!$ and the corresponding eigenspace dimensions are 1, ${{n-1}\choose{2}}^2$, $({{n-1}\choose{2}…
We consider the nonlinear eigenvalue problem $Lx + \varepsilon N(x) = λCx$, $\|x\|=1$, where $\varepsilon,λ$ are real parameters, $L, C\colon G \to H$ are bounded linear operators between separable real Hilbert spaces, and $N\colon S \to H$ is a continuous map defined on the unit sphere of $G$. We prove a global persistence result regarding the set $Σ$ of the solutions $(x,\varepsilon,λ) \in S \times \mathbb R\times \mathbb R$ of this problem. Namely, if the operators $N$ and $C$ are compact, under suitable assumptions on a solution $p_*=(x_*,0,λ_*)$ of the unperturbed problem, we prove that t…
The eigenvectors for graph $1$-Laplacian possess some sort of localization property: On one hand, any nodal domain of an eigenvector is again an eigenvector with the same eigenvalue; on the other hand, one can pack up an eigenvector for a new graph by several fundamental eigencomponents and modules with the same eigenvalue via few special techniques. The Courant nodal domain theorem for graphs is extended to graph $1$-Laplacian for strong nodal domains, but for weak nodal domains it is false. The notion of algebraic multiplicity is introduced in order to provide a more precise estimate of the …
We propose a simple and natural definition for the Laplacian and the signless Laplacian tensors of a uniform hypergraph. We study their H$^+$-eigenvalues, i.e., H-eigenvalues with nonnegative H-eigenvectors, and H$^{++}$-eigenvalues, i.e., H-eigenvalues with positive H-eigenvectors. We show that each of the Laplacian tensor, the signless Laplacian tensor and the adjacency tensor has at most one H$^{++}$-eigenvalue, but has several other H$^+$-eigenvalues. We identify their largest and smallest H$^+$-eigenvalues, and establish some maximum and minimum properties of these H$^+$-eigenvalues. We t…
When attempting to develop wavelet transforms for graphs and networks, some researchers have used graph Laplacian eigenvalues and eigenvectors in place of the frequencies and complex exponentials in the Fourier theory for regular lattices in the Euclidean domains. This viewpoint, however, has a fundamental flaw: on a general graph, the Laplacian eigenvalues cannot be interpreted as the frequencies of the corresponding eigenvectors. In this paper, we discuss this important problem further and propose a new method to organize those eigenvectors by defining and measuring "natural" distances betwe…
