Relations between the local weight distributions of a binary linear code, its extended code, and its even weight subcode are presented. In particular, for a code of which the extended code is transitive invariant and contains only codewords with weight multiples of four, the local weight distribution can be obtained from that of the extended code. Using the relations, the local weight distributions of the $(127,k)$ primitive BCH codes for $k\leq50$, the $(127,64)$ punctured third-order Reed-Muller, and their even weight subcodes are obtained from the local weight distribution of the $(128,k)$ extended primitive BCH codes for $k\leq50$ and the $(128,64)$ third-order Reed-Muller code. We also show an approach to improve an algorithm for computing the local weight distribution proposed before.
In this work, we address the question of the largest rate of linear subcodes of Reed-Muller (RM) codes, all of whose codewords respect a runlength-limited (RLL) constraint. Our interest is in the $(d,\infty)$-RLL constraint, which mandates that every pair of successive $1$s be separated by at least $d$ $0$s. Consider any sequence $\{{\mathcal{C}_m}\}_{m\geq 1}$ of RM codes with increasing blocklength, whose rates approach $R$, in the limit as the blocklength goes to infinity. We show that for any linear $(d,\infty)$-RLL subcode, $\hat{\mathcal{C}}_m$, of the code $\mathcal{C}_m$, it holds that…

This paper is concerned with the affine-invariant ternary codes which are defined by Hermitian functions. We compute the incidence matrices of 2-designs that are supported by the minimum weight codewords of these ternary codes. The linear codes generated by the rows of these incidence matrix are subcodes of the extended codes of the 4-th order generalized Reed-Muller codes and they also hold 2-designs. Finally, we give the dimensions and lower bound of the minimum weights of these linear codes.
In this paper, the 3-rank of the incidence matrices of 2-designs supported by the minimum weight codewords in a family of ternary linear codes considered in [C. Ding, C. Li, Infinite families of 2-designs and 3-designs from linear codes, Discrete Mathematics 340(10) (2017) 2415--2431] are computed. A lower bound on the minimum distance of the ternary codes spanned by the incidence matrices of these designs is derived, and it is proved that the codes are subcodes of the 4th order generalized Reed-Muller codes.
A lower bound on minimum distance of convolutional polar codes is provided. The bound is obtained from the minimum weight of generalized cosets of the codes generated by bottom rows of the polarizing matrix. Moreover, a construction of convolutional polar subcodes is proposed, which provides improved performance under successive cancellation list decoding. For sufficiently large list size, the decoding complexity of convolutional polar subcodes appears to be lower compared to Arikan polar subcodes with the same performance. The error probability of successive cancellation list decoding of conv…
We show that any ternary Euclidean (resp.\ quaternary Hermitian) linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ code contains a Euclidean (resp.\ Hermitian) linear complementary dual $[n,k-1]$ subcode for $2 \le k \le n$. As a consequence, we derive a bound on the largest minimum weights among ternary Euclidean linear complementary dual codes and quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes.
We present a low-complexity and low-latency decoding algorithm for a class of Reed-Muller (RM) subcodes that are defined based on the product of smaller RM codes. More specifically, the input sequence is shaped as a multi-dimensional array, and the encoding over each dimension is done separately via a smaller RM encoder. Similarly, the decoding is performed over each dimension via a low-complexity decoder for smaller RM codes. The proposed construction is of particular interest to low-capacity channels that are relevant to emerging low-rate communication scenarios. We present an efficient soft…
Reed-Muller (RM) codes are conjectured to achieve the capacity of any binary-input memoryless symmetric (BMS) channel, and are observed to have a comparable performance to that of random codes in terms of scaling laws. On the negative side, RM codes lack efficient decoders with performance close to that of a maximum likelihood decoder for general parameters. Also, they only admit certain discrete sets of rates. In this paper, we focus on subcodes of RM codes with flexible rates that can take any code dimension from 1 to n, where n is the blocklength. We first extend the recursive projection-ag…
Coding theory and $t$-designs have close connections and interesting interplay. In this paper, we first introduce a class of ternary linear codes and study their parameters. We then focus on their three-weight subcodes with a special weight distribution. We determine the weight distributions of some shortened codes and punctured codes of these three-weight subcodes. These shortened and punctured codes contain some codes that have the same parameters as the best ternary linear codes known in the database maintained by Markus Grassl at http://www.codetables.de/. These three-weight subcodes with …
Projective Reed-Muller codes correspond to subcodes of the Reed-Muller code in which the polynomials being evaluated to yield codewords, are restricted to be homogeneous. The Generalized Hamming Weights (GHW) of a code ${\cal C}$, identify for each dimension $ν$, the smallest size of the support of a subcode of ${\cal C}$ of dimension $ν$. The GHW of a code are of interest in assessing the vulnerability of a code in a wiretap channel setting. It is also of use in bounding the state complexity of the trellis representation of the code. In prior work by the same authors, a code-shortening algori…
Lifted Reed-Solomon codes, a subclass of lifted affine-invariant codes, have been shown to be of high rate while preserving locality properties similar to generalized Reed-Muller codes, which they contain as subcodes. This work introduces a simple bounded distance decoder for (subcodes of) lifted affine-invariant codes that is guaranteed to decode up to almost half of their minimum distance. Further, long $q$-ary lifted affine-invariant codes are shown to correct almost all error patterns of relative weight $\frac{q-1}{q}-ε$ for $ε>0$.

This work analyzes the latency of the simplified successive cancellation (SSC) decoding scheme for polar codes proposed by Alamdar-Yazdi and Kschischang. It is shown that, unlike conventional successive cancellation decoding, where latency is linear in the block length, the latency of SSC decoding is sublinear. More specifically, the latency of SSC decoding is $O(N^{1-1/μ})$, where $N$ is the block length and $μ$ is the scaling exponent of the channel, which captures the speed of convergence of the rate to capacity. Numerical results demonstrate the tightness of the bound and show that most of…
Minimal linear codes have significant applications in secret sharing schemes and secure two-party computation. There are several methods to construct linear codes, one of which is based on functions over finite fields. Recently, many construction methods of linear codes based on functions have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we generalize the recent construction methods given by Tang et al. in [IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 62(3), 1166-1176, 2016] to weakly regular plateaued functions over finite fields of odd characteristic. We first construct three weight linear co…
In this paper we determine the minimum distance of orthogonal line-Grassmann codes for $q$ even. The case $q$ odd was solved in "I. Cardinali, L. Giuzzi, K. Kaipa, A. Pasini, Line Polar Grassmann Codes of Orthogonal Type, J. Pure Applied Algebra." We also show that for $q$ even all minimum weight codewords are equivalent and that symplectic line-Grassmann codes are proper subcodes of codimension $2n$ of the orthogonal ones.
We develop an algebraic theory of supports for $R$-linear codes of fixed length, where $R$ is a finite commutative unitary ring. A support naturally induces a notion of generalized weights and allows one to associate a monomial ideal to a code. Our main result states that, under suitable assumptions, the generalized weights of a code can be obtained from the graded Betti numbers of its associated monomial ideal. In the case of $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear codes endowed with the Hamming metric, the ideal coincides with the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the matroid associated to the code via its parity-chec…
Weighted poset block metric is a generalization of weighted poset metric introduced by Panek et al. ([\ref{panek}]) and the metric for linear error-block codes introduced by Feng et al. ([\ref{FENG}]). This type of metrics includes many classical metrics such as Hamming metric, Lee metric, poset metric, pomset metric, poset block metric, pomset block metric and so on. In this work, we focus on constructing new codes under weighted poset block metric from given ones. Some basic properties such as minimum distance and covering radius are determined.
In this paper, we introduce a new family of metrics, weighted poset block metric, that combine the weighted coordinates poset metric introduced by Panek et al. [(\ref{panek})] and the metric for linear error-block codes introduced by Feng et al. [(\ref{FENG})]. This type of metrics include many classical metrics such as Hamming metric, Lee metric, poset metric, pomset metric, poset block metric, pomset block metric and so on. We give a complete description of the groups of linear isometries of these metric spaces in terms of a semi-direct product. Furthermore, we obtain a Singleton type bound …
We study the problem of recovering a block-sparse signal from under-sampled observations. The non-zero values of such signals appear in few blocks, and their recovery is often accomplished using a $\ell_{1,2}$ optimization problem. In applications such as DNA micro-arrays, some prior information about the block support, i.e., blocks containing non-zero elements, is available. A typical way to consider the extra information in recovery procedures is to solve a weighted $\ell_{1,2}$ problem. In this paper, we consider a block sparse model, where the block support has intersection with some given…
Pomset block metric is a generalization of pomset metric. In this paper, we define weight enumerator of linear block codes in pomset metric over $\mathbb{Z}_m$ and establish MacWilliams type identities for linear block codes with respect to certain pomsets. The relation between weight enumerators of two linear pomset block codes and their direct sum is also investigated.
We study the problem of reconstructing a block-sparse signal from compressively sampled measurements. In certain applications, in addition to the inherent block-sparse structure of the signal, some prior information about the block support, i.e. blocks containing non-zero elements, might be available. Although many block-sparse recovery algorithms have been investigated in Bayesian framework, it is still unclear how to incorporate the information about the probability of occurrence into regularization-based block-sparse recovery in an optimal sense. In this work, we bridge between these fields…

In this paper, we determine the groups of linear isometries of $(P,w,π)$-metric spaces in terms of a semi-direct product, which turns out to …
Given $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, a partial order $\preceq$ on $[n]$, a label map $π: [n] \rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ defined by $π(i) = k_i$ with $\sum_{i=1}^{n}π(i) = N$, the direct sum $ \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_1} \oplus \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_2}\oplus \ldots \oplus \mathbb{F}_{q}^{k_n} $ of $ \mathbb{F}_q^N $, and a weight function $w$ on $ \mathbb{F}_q $, we define a poset block metric $d_{(P,w,π)}$ on $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{N}$ based on the poset $P=([n],\preceq)$. The metric $d_{(P,w,π)}$ is said to be weighted coordinates poset block metric ($(P,w,π)$-metric). It extends the weighted coordinates poset metric (…
