Asymptotic composants and their incidence relations are powerful invariants of 1-dimensional inflation tilings spaces, which can distinguish many MLD classes of tilings. In particular, and unlike most other invariants, they can often provide obstructions to a tiling space being MLD to its reflection. We present a simple algorithm to determine these asymptotic composants for primitive inflation tiling spaces in one dimension, and illustrate how they can be used to tell different MLD classes of tilings apart. In an Appendix, we then show that the structure of asymptotic composants, together with the orbit separation dimension (OSD), can distinguish all MLD classes of inflations tilings with pure-point spectrum for a bunch of small inflation factors, which illustrates the power of these invariants.
Consider an arbitrary extension of a free $\mathbb Z^d$-action on the Cantor set. It is shown that it has dynamical asymptotic dimension at most $3^d - 1$.
We consider the problem of minimizing the asymptotic exit rate with which the controlled-diffusion process of a stochastically perturbed multi-channel dynamical system exits from a given bounded open domain. In particular, for a class of admissible bounded linear feedback operators, we establish a connection between the asymptotic exit rate with which such a controlled-diffusion process exits from the given domain and the asymptotic behavior (i.e., a probabilistic characterization) of the principal eigenvalue of the infinitesimal generator, which corresponds to the stochastically perturbed dyn…
We establish two precise asymptotic results on the Birkhoff sums for dynamical systems. These results are parallel to that on the arithmetic sums of independent and identically distributed random variables previously obtained by Hsu and Robbins, Erdős, Heyde. We apply our results to the Gauss map and obtain new precise asymptotics in the theorem of Lévy on the regular continued fraction expansion of irrational numbers in $(0,1)$.
This paper deals with asymptotic stability of a class of dynamical systems in terms of smooth Lyapunov pairs. We point out that well known converse Lyapunov results for differential inclusions cannot be applied to this class of dynamical systems. Following an abstract approach we put an assumption on the trajectories of the dynamical systems which demands for any trajectory the existence of a neighboring trajectory such that their difference grows linearly in time and distance of the starting points. Under this assumption, we prove the existence of a $C^\infty$-smooth Lyapunov pair. We also sh…
We study discrete dynamical systems through the topological concepts of limit set, which consists of all points that can be reached arbitrarily late, and asymptotic set, which consists of all adhering values of orbits. In particular, we deal with the case when each of these are a singleton, or when the restriction of the system is periodic on them, and show that this is equivalent to some simple dynamics in the case of subshifts or cellular automata. Moreover, we deal with the stability of these properties with respect to some simulation notions.
We prove that certain asymptotic moments exist for some random distance expanding dynamical systems and Markov chains in random dynamical environment, and compute them in terms of the derivatives at the $0$ of an appropriate pressure function. It will follow that these moments satisfy the relations that the asymptotic moments $\gam_k=\lim_{n\to\infty}n^{-[\frac k2]}\bbE(\sum_{i=1}^n X_i)^k$ of sums of independent and identically distributed random variables satisfy. We will also obtain certain (Edgeworth) asymptotic expansions related to the central limit theorem for such processes. Our proofs…
This paper studies the dynamics of families of monotone nonautonomous neutral functional differential equations with nonautonomous operator, of great importance for their applications to the study of the long-term behavior of the trajectories of problems described by this kind of equations, such us compartmental systems and neural networks among many others. Precisely, more general admissible initial conditions are included in the study to show that the solutions are asymptotically of the same type as the coefficients of the neutral and non-neutral part.
We consider a dynamical system which has the hyperbolic structure along an attracting invariant manifold $M$. The problem is whether every motion starting in a neighborhood of $M$ possesses an asymptotic phase, i.e. eventually approaches a particular motion on $M$. Earlier, positive solutions to the problem were obtained under the condition that the decay rate of solutions toward the manifold exceeds the decay rate of the solutions within the manifold. We show that in our case the above condition is not necessary. To prove that a neighborhood of $M$ is filled with motions for each of which the…
A successful method to describe the asymptotic behavior of various deterministic and stochastic processes such as asymptotically autonomous differential equations or stochastic approximation processes is to relate it to an appropriately chosen limit semiflow. Benaïm and Schreiber (2000) define a general class of such stochastic processes, which they call weak asymptotic pseudotrajectories and study their ergodic behavior. In particular, they prove that the weak* limit points of the empirical measures associated to such processes are almost surely invariant for the associated deterministic semi…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the sequence $\{Ω(n) \}_{ n \in \mathbb{N} }$ from a dynamical point of view, where $Ω(n)$ denotes the number of prime factors of $n$ counted with multiplicity. First, we show that for any non-atomic ergodic system $(X, \mathcal{B}, μ, T)$, the operators $T^{Ω(n)}: \mathcal{B} \to L^1(μ)$ have the strong sweeping-out property. In particular, this implies that the Pointwise Ergodic Theorem does not hold along $Ω(n)$. Second, we show that the behaviors of $Ω(n)$ captured by the Prime Number Theorem and Erdős-Kac Theorem are disjoint, in the sense that their dy…
In this paper we study the large time asymptotics of the flow of a dynamical system $X'=b(X)$ posed in the $d$-dimensional torus. Rather than using the classical unique ergodicity condition which is not fulfilled if $b$ vanishes at different points, we only assume that the set of the averages of $b$ with respect to the invariant probability measures for the flow is reduced to a singleton. We also rewrite the Liouville theorem which holds for any invariant probability measure $μ$, namely $μ\,b$ is divergence free, as a divergence-curl formula satisfied by any regular periodic function. The comb…
We introduce a novel quantity for general dynamical systems, which we call the asymptotic uniform complexity. We prove an inequality relating the asymptotic uniform complexity of a dynamical system to its mean topological matching number. Furthermore, we show that the established inequality yields an exact equation for perfect Hausdorff dynamical systems. Utilizing these results, we conclude that a dynamical system is amenable if its asymptotic uniform complexity equals one, and that the converse is true for perfect Hausdorff dynamical systems, such as non-discrete Hausdorff topological groups…
The filtering distribution is a time-evolving probability distribution on the state of a dynamical system, given noisy observations. We study the large-time asymptotics of this probability distribution for discrete-time, randomly initialized signals that evolve according to a deterministic map $Ψ$. The observations are assumed to comprise a low-dimensional projection of the signal, given by an operator $P$, subject to additive noise. We address the question of whether these observations contain sufficient information to accurately reconstruct the signal. In a general framework, we establish co…
The dynamical equations for a gliding Lagrange top are not integrable. They have 5 dynamical variables and admit one integral of motion. We show that all solutions go to one of the two vertical spinning solutions and determine conditions of their stability. This means that solutions starting close to either of the spinning solutions go asymptotically to this solution.
It is proved that to every invariant measure of a compact dynamical system one can associate a certain asymptotic pseudo orbit such that any point asymptotically tracing in average that pseudo orbit is generic for the measure. It follows that the asymptotic average shadowing property implies that every invariant measure has a generic point. The proof is based on the properties of the Besicovitch pseudometric DB which are of independent interest. It is proved among the other things that the set of generic points of ergodic measures is a closed set with respect to DB. It is also showed that the …
In this article we consider the general setting of conformal graph directed Markov systems modeled by countable state symbolic subshifts of finite type. We deal with two classes of such systems: attracting and parabolic. The latter being treated by means of the former. We prove fairly complete asymptotic counting results for multipliers and diameters associated with preimages or periodic orbits ordered hy a natural geometric weighting. We also prove the corresponding Central Limit Theorems describing the further features of the distribution of their weights. These have direct applications to a…
In this paper the difference in the asymptotic dynamics between the nonlocal and local two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg models is investigated. It is shown that the bounds for the dimensions of the global attractors for the nonlocal and local Swift-Hohenberg models differ by an absolute constant, which depends only on the Rayleigh number, and upper and lower bounds of the kernel of the nonlocal nonlinearity. Even when this kernel of the nonlocal operator is a constant function, the dimension bounds of the global attractors still differ by an absolute constant depending on the Rayleigh number.
The paper endeavours to solve the problem of the necessary and sufficient conditions for testing asymptotic stability of the equilibrium state without using a positive definite or semi-definite Lyapunov function for time-invariant nonlinear discrete-time dynamical systems. The solution is based on the concept of the $\bf G$-functions introduced in this paper. As a result, new necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of such systems and an estimation or the exact determination of the asymptotic stability domain of the state $x=0$ are established. Examples are worked out to i…
This text is written based on the author's publications during the period from 1991 to 2001. The work is devoted to the theory of Markov intertwining operators and joinings of measure-preserving group actions, as well as to their applications to study asymptotic properties of dynamical systems. Special attention is paid to Rokhlin's problems on multiple mixing and multiple spectrum. The development of these topics over the past twenty years has not been discussed. In fact many results on joinings have frozen in time, many questions have remained open without losing their relevance, but probabl…
In [Janson & Marsden 2017] a dynamical system with a plastic self-organising velocity vector field was introduced, which was inspired by the architectural plasticity of the brain and proposed as a possible conceptual model of a cognitive system. Here we provide a more rigorous mathematical formulation of this problem, make several simplifying assumptions about the form of the model and of the applied stimulus, and perform its mathematical analysis. Namely, we explore the existence, uniqueness, continuity and smoothness of both the plastic velocity vector field controlling the observable behavi…
Motivated by Mather theory of minimizing measures for symplectic twist dynamics, we study conformally symplectic flows on a cotangent bundle. These dynamics are the most general dynamics for which it makes sense to look at (asymptotic) dynamical Maslov index. Our main result is the existence of invariant measures with vanishing index without any convexity hypothesis, in the general framework of conformally symplectic flows. A degenerate twist-condition hypothesis implies the existence of ergodic invariant measures with zero dynamical Maslov index and thus the existence of points with zero dyna…
We develop a general compactification framework to facilitate analysis of nonlinear nonautonomous ODEs where nonautonomous terms decay asymptotically. The strategy is to compactify the problem: the phase space is augmented with a bounded but open dimension and then extended at one or both ends by gluing in flow-invariant subspaces that carry autonomous dynamics of the limit systems from infinity. We derive the weakest decay conditions possible for the compactified system to be continuously differentiable on the extended phase space. This enables us to use equilibria and other compact invariant…
In this paper we give a new sufficient condition for asymptotic periodicity of Frobenius-Perron operator corresponding to two--dimensional maps. The result of the asymptotic periodicity for strictly expanding systems, that is, all eigenvalues of the system are greater than one, in a high-dimensional dynamical systems was already known. Our new theorem enables to apply for the system having an eigenvalue smaller than one. The key idea for the proof is a function of bounded variation defined by line integration. Finally, we introduce a new two-dimensional dynamical system exhibiting the asymptot…
We consider a collective version of Parrondo's games with probabilities parametrized by rho in (0,1) in which a fraction phi in (0,1] of an infinite number of players collectively choose and individually play at each turn the game that yields the maximum average profit at that turn. Dinis and Parrondo (2003) and Van den Broeck and Cleuren (2004) studied the asymptotic behavior of this greedy strategy, which corresponds to a piecewise-linear discrete dynamical system in a subset of the plane, for rho=1/3 and three choices of phi. We study its asymptotic behavior for all (rho, phi) in (0,1)x(0,1]…
A finite dynamical system is a system of multivariate functions over a finite alphabet used to model a network of interacting entities. The main feature of a finite dynamical system is its interaction graph, which indicates which local functions depend on which variables; the interaction graph is a qualitative representation of the interactions amongst entities on the network. The rank of a finite dynamical system is the cardinality of its image; the periodic rank is the number of its periodic points. In this paper, we determine the maximum rank and the maximum periodic rank of a finite dynami…
In the paper we discuss two questions about smooth expanding dynamical systems on the circle. (i) We characterize the sequences of asymptotic length ratios which occur for systems with Hölder continuous derivative. The sequences of asymptotic length ratios are precisely those given by a positive Hölder continuous function $s$ (solenoid function) on the Cantor set $C$ of 2-adic integers satisfying a functional equation called the matching condition. The functional equation for the 2-adic integer Cantor set is $s(2x+1)=\frac{s(x)}{s(2x)}(1+\frac{1}{s(2x-1)})-1.$ We also present a one-to-one corr…
System of partial differential equations with a convolution terms and non-local nonlinearity describing oscillations of plate due to Berger approach and with accounting for thermal regime in terms of Coleman-Gurtin and Gurtin-Pipkin law and fading memory of material is considered. The equation is transformed into a dynamical system in a suitable Hilbert space which asymptotic behaviour is analysed. Existence of the compact global attractor in this dynamical system and some of its properties are proved in this article. Main tool in analysis of asymptotic behaviour is stabilizability inequality.
Random invariant manifolds often provide geometric structures for understanding stochastic dynamics. In this paper, a dynamical approximation estimate is derived for a class of stochastic partial differential equations, by showing that the random invariant manifold is almost surely asymptotically complete. The asymptotic dynamical behavior is thus described by a stochastic ordinary differential system on the random invariant manifold, under suitable conditions. As an application, stationary states (invariant measures) is considered for one example of stochastic partial differential equations.
We study the dynamics of a transformation that acts on infinite paths in the graph associated with Pascal's triangle. For each ergodic invariant measure the asymptotic law of the return time to cylinders is given by a step function. We construct a representation of the system by a subshift on a two-symbol alphabet and then prove that the complexity function of this subshift is asymptotic to a cubic, the frequencies of occurrence of blocks behave in a regular manner, and the subshift is topologically weak mixing.
Certain dynamical models of competition have a unique invariant hypersurface to whichevery nonzero tractory is asymptotic, having simple geometry and topology.
The exact order of mixing for zero-dimensional algebraic dynamical systems is not entirely understood. Here non-Archimedean norms in function fields of positive characteristic are used to exhibit an asymptotic shape in non-mixing sequences for algebraic $Z^2$-actions. This gives a relationship between the order of mixing and the convex hull of the defining polynomial. Using these methods, we show that an algebraic dynamical system for which any shape of cardinality three is mixing is mixing of order three, and for any $k\ge1$ exhibit examples that are $k$-fold mixing but not $(k+1)$-fold mixin…
We study the minimal distance between two orbit segments of length n, in a random dynamical system with sufficiently good mixing properties. This problem has already been solved in non-random dynamical system, and on average in random dynamical systems (the so-called annealed version of the problem): it is known that the asymptotic behavior for this question is given by a dimension-like quantity associated to the invariant measure, called its correlation dimension (or R{é}nyi entropy). We study the analogous quenched question, and show that the asymptotic behavior is more involved: two correla…
For C1-smooth strongly monotone discrete-time dynamical systems, it is shown that ``convergence to linearly stable cycles" is a prevalent asymptotic behavior in the measuretheoretic sense. The results are then applied to classes of time-periodic parabolic equations and give new results on prevalence of convergence to periodic solutions. In particular, for equations with Neumann boundary conditions on convex domains, we show the prevalence of the set of initial conditions corresponding to the solutions that converge to spatiallyhomogeneous periodic solutions. While, for equations on radially sy…
For a class of flows on polytopes, including many examples from Evolutionary Game Theory, we describe a piecewise linear model which encapsulates the asymptotic dynamics along the heteroclinic network formed out of the polytope's vertexes and edges. This piecewise linear flow is easy to compute even in higher dimensions, which allows the usage of numeric algorithms to find invariant dynamical structures such as periodic, homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits, which if robust persist as invariant dynamical structures of the original flow. We apply this method to prove the existence of chaotic behav…
We study the asymptotic behavior of random time changes of dynamical systems. As random time changes we propose three classes which exhibits different patterns of asymptotic decays. The subordination principle may be applied to study the asymptotic behavior of the random time dynamical systems. It turns out that for the special case of stable subordinators explicit expressions for the subordination are known and its asymptotic behavior are derived. For more general classes of random time changes explicit calculations are essentially more complicated and we reduce our study to the asymptotic be…
We consider a conservative ergodic measure-preserving transformation $T$ of a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ with $μ(X)=\infty$. Given an observable $f:X\to \mathbb{R}$ we study the almost sure asymptotic behaviour of the Birkhoff sums $S_Nf(x) := \sum_{j=1}^N\, (f\circ T^{j-1})(x)$. In infinite ergodic theory it is well known that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_Nf(x)$ strongly depends on the point $x\in X$, and if $f\in L^1(X,μ)$, then there exists no real valued sequence $(b(N))$ such that $\lim_{N\to\infty} S_Nf(x)/b(N)=1$ almost surely. In this paper we show that for dynamica…
For any dynamical system $T:X\rightarrow X$ of a compact metric space $X$ with $g-$almost product property and uniform separation property, under the assumptions that the periodic points are dense in $X$ and the periodic measures are dense in the space of invariant measures, we distinguish various periodic-like recurrences and find that they all carry full topological topological entropy and so do their gap-sets. In particular, this implies that any two kind of periodic-like recurrences are essentially different. Moreover, we coordinate periodic-like recurrences with (ir)regularity and obtain …
This paper considers the problem of linear time-invariant (LTI) system identification using input/output data. Recent work has provided non-asymptotic results on partially observed LTI system identification using a single trajectory but is only suitable for stable systems. We provide finite-time analysis for learning Markov parameters based on the ordinary least-squares (OLS) estimator using multiple trajectories, which covers both stable and unstable systems. For unstable systems, our results suggest that the Markov parameters are harder to estimate in the presence of process noise. Without p…
A dynamical system perturbed by white noise in a neighborhood of an unstable fixed point is considered. We obtain the exit asymptotics in the limit of vanishing noise intensity. This is a refinement of a result by Kifer (1981).
There are well-known analogs of the prime number theorem and Mertens' theorem for dynamical systems with hyperbolic behaviour. Here we consider the same question for the simplest non-hyperbolic algebraic systems. The asymptotic behaviour of the orbit-counting function is governed by a rotation on an associated compact group, and in simple examples we exhibit uncountably many different asymptotic growth rates for the orbit-counting function. Mertens' Theorem also holds in this setting, with an explicit rational leading coefficient obtained from arithmetic properties of the non-hyperbolic eigend…
Call and Silverman introduced the canonical height associated to a polarized dynamical system, that is, an endomorphism of a projective variety and an ample line bundle which pulls back to a tensor power of itself. They also presented an asymptotic for the variation of this height in a family over a one-dimensional base in terms of the height on the generic fibre and the height of the parameter. Here we improve this asymptotic, saving a power in the error term. As a corollary, we give an explicit bound on the height of parameters at which the dynamical system specialized to a finite orbit, in …
We consider a $\mathbb{R}$-extension of one dimensional uniformly expanding open dynamical systems and prove a new explicit estimate for the asymptotic spectral gap. To get these results, we use a new application of a "global normal form" for the dynamical system, a "semiclassical expression beyond the Ehrenfest time" that expresses the transfer operator at large time as a sum over rank one operators (each is associated to one orbit). In this paper we establish the validity of the so-called "diagonal approximation" up to twice the local Ehrenfest time.
Networks of coupled degrade-and-fire (DF) oscillators are simple dynamical models of assemblies of interacting self-repressing genes. For mean-field interactions, which most mathematical studies have assumed so far, every trajectory must approach a periodic orbit. Moreover, asymptotic cluster distributions can be computed explicitly in terms of coupling intensity, and a massive collection of distributions collapses when this intensity passes a threshold. Here, we show that most of these dynamical features persist for an arbitrary coupling topology. In particular, we prove that, in any system o…
In this article, we study the dynamics of a nonlinear system governed by an ordinary differential equation under the combined influence of fast periodic sampling with period $δ$ and small jump noise of size $\varepsilon, 0< \varepsilon,δ\ll 1.$ The noise is a combination of Brownian motion and Poisson random measure. The instantaneous rate of change of the state depends not only on its current value but on the most recent measurement of the state, as the state is measured at certain discrete-time instants. As $\varepsilon,δ\searrow 0,$ the stochastic process of interest converges, in a suitabl…
Necessary conditions for asymptotic stability and stabilizability of subsets for dynamical and control systems are obtained. The main necessary condition is homotopical and is in turn used to obtain a homological one. A certain extension is ruled out. Questions are posed.
