In the paper we discuss two questions about smooth expanding dynamical systems on the circle. (i) We characterize the sequences of asymptotic length ratios which occur for systems with Hölder continuous derivative. The sequences of asymptotic length ratios are precisely those given by a positive Hölder continuous function $s$ (solenoid function) on the Cantor set $C$ of 2-adic integers satisfying a functional equation called the matching condition. The functional equation for the 2-adic integer Cantor set is $s(2x+1)=\frac{s(x)}{s(2x)}(1+\frac{1}{s(2x-1)})-1.$ We also present a one-to-one correspondence between solenoid functions and affine classes of 2-adic quasiperiodic tilings of the real line that are fixed points of the 2-amalgamation operator. (ii) We calculate the precise maximum possible level of smoothness for a representative of the system, up to diffeomorphic conjugacy, in terms of the functions $s$ and $cr(x)=(1+s(x))/(1+(s(x+1))^{-1})$. For example, in the Lipschitz structure on $C$ determined by $s$, the maximum smoothness is $C^{1+α}$ for $0<α\le 1$ if, and only if, $s$ is $α$-Hölder continuous. The maximum smoothness is $C^{2+α}$ for $0<α\le 1$ if, and only if, $cr$ is $(1+α)$-Hölder. A curious connection with Mostow type rigidity is provided by the fact that $s$ must be constant if it is $α$-Hölder for $α> 1$.
We describe in this survey several results relating Fractal Geometry, Dynamical Systems and Diophantine Approximations, including a description of recent results related to geometrical properties of the classical Markov and Lagrange spectra and generalizations in Dynamical Systems and Differential Geometry.
We study hyperbolic mappings depending on a parameter $\varepsilon $. Each of them has an invariant Cantor set. As $\varepsilon $ tends to zero, the mapping approaches the boundary of hyperbolicity. We analyze the asymptotics of the gap geometry and the scaling function geometry of the invariant Cantor set as $\varepsilon $ goes to zero. For example, in the quadratic case, we show that all the gaps close uniformly with speed $\sqrt {\varepsilon}$. There is a limiting scaling function of the limiting mapping and this scaling function has dense jump discontinuities because the limiting mapping i…
Embedding techniques allow the approximations of finite dimensional attractors and manifolds of infinite dimensional dynamical systems via subdivision and continuation methods. These approximations give a topological one-to-one image of the original set. In order to additionally reveal their geometry we use diffusion mapst o find intrinsic coordinates. We illustrate our results on the unstable manifold of the one-dimensional Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation, as well as for the attractor of the Mackey-Glass delay differential equation.
We consider the problem of minimizing the asymptotic exit rate with which the controlled-diffusion process of a stochastically perturbed multi-channel dynamical system exits from a given bounded open domain. In particular, for a class of admissible bounded linear feedback operators, we establish a connection between the asymptotic exit rate with which such a controlled-diffusion process exits from the given domain and the asymptotic behavior (i.e., a probabilistic characterization) of the principal eigenvalue of the infinitesimal generator, which corresponds to the stochastically perturbed dyn…
The exact order of mixing for zero-dimensional algebraic dynamical systems is not entirely understood. Here non-Archimedean norms in function fields of positive characteristic are used to exhibit an asymptotic shape in non-mixing sequences for algebraic $Z^2$-actions. This gives a relationship between the order of mixing and the convex hull of the defining polynomial. Using these methods, we show that an algebraic dynamical system for which any shape of cardinality three is mixing is mixing of order three, and for any $k\ge1$ exhibit examples that are $k$-fold mixing but not $(k+1)$-fold mixin…
This paper deals with asymptotic stability of a class of dynamical systems in terms of smooth Lyapunov pairs. We point out that well known converse Lyapunov results for differential inclusions cannot be applied to this class of dynamical systems. Following an abstract approach we put an assumption on the trajectories of the dynamical systems which demands for any trajectory the existence of a neighboring trajectory such that their difference grows linearly in time and distance of the starting points. Under this assumption, we prove the existence of a $C^\infty$-smooth Lyapunov pair. We also sh…
We study discrete dynamical systems through the topological concepts of limit set, which consists of all points that can be reached arbitrarily late, and asymptotic set, which consists of all adhering values of orbits. In particular, we deal with the case when each of these are a singleton, or when the restriction of the system is periodic on them, and show that this is equivalent to some simple dynamics in the case of subshifts or cellular automata. Moreover, we deal with the stability of these properties with respect to some simulation notions.
This paper studies the dynamics of families of monotone nonautonomous neutral functional differential equations with nonautonomous operator, of great importance for their applications to the study of the long-term behavior of the trajectories of problems described by this kind of equations, such us compartmental systems and neural networks among many others. Precisely, more general admissible initial conditions are included in the study to show that the solutions are asymptotically of the same type as the coefficients of the neutral and non-neutral part.
We consider a dynamical system which has the hyperbolic structure along an attracting invariant manifold $M$. The problem is whether every motion starting in a neighborhood of $M$ possesses an asymptotic phase, i.e. eventually approaches a particular motion on $M$. Earlier, positive solutions to the problem were obtained under the condition that the decay rate of solutions toward the manifold exceeds the decay rate of the solutions within the manifold. We show that in our case the above condition is not necessary. To prove that a neighborhood of $M$ is filled with motions for each of which the…
This paper is devoted to the problem of classification, up to smooth isomorphisms or up to orbital equivalence, of smooth integrable vector fields on 2-dimensional surfaces, under some nondegeneracy conditions. The main continuous invariants involved in this classification are the left equivalence classes of period or monodromy functions, and the cohomology classes of period cocycles, which can be expressed in terms of Puiseux series. We also study the problem of Hamiltonianization of these integrable vector fields by a compatible symplectic or Poisson structure.
In this paper we consider the topological class, denoted by AV2, of universal covering maps from the plane to the sphere with two removed points. We prove that an element f in AV2 with finite post-singular set is combinatorially equivalent to a meromorphic transcendental map g with constant Schwarzian derivative if any only if f satisfies a Bounded Geometry condition.
Consider an arbitrary extension of a free $\mathbb Z^d$-action on the Cantor set. It is shown that it has dynamical asymptotic dimension at most $3^d - 1$.
We establish two precise asymptotic results on the Birkhoff sums for dynamical systems. These results are parallel to that on the arithmetic sums of independent and identically distributed random variables previously obtained by Hsu and Robbins, Erdős, Heyde. We apply our results to the Gauss map and obtain new precise asymptotics in the theorem of Lévy on the regular continued fraction expansion of irrational numbers in $(0,1)$.
We prove that certain asymptotic moments exist for some random distance expanding dynamical systems and Markov chains in random dynamical environment, and compute them in terms of the derivatives at the $0$ of an appropriate pressure function. It will follow that these moments satisfy the relations that the asymptotic moments $\gam_k=\lim_{n\to\infty}n^{-[\frac k2]}\bbE(\sum_{i=1}^n X_i)^k$ of sums of independent and identically distributed random variables satisfy. We will also obtain certain (Edgeworth) asymptotic expansions related to the central limit theorem for such processes. Our proofs…
We study dynamical systems arising from word maps on simple groups. We develop a geometric method based on the classical trace map for investigating periodic points of such systems. These results lead to a new approach to the search of Engel-like sequences of words in two variables which characterize finite solvable groups. They also give rise to some new phenomena and concepts in the arithmetic of dynamical systems.
A successful method to describe the asymptotic behavior of various deterministic and stochastic processes such as asymptotically autonomous differential equations or stochastic approximation processes is to relate it to an appropriately chosen limit semiflow. Benaïm and Schreiber (2000) define a general class of such stochastic processes, which they call weak asymptotic pseudotrajectories and study their ergodic behavior. In particular, they prove that the weak* limit points of the empirical measures associated to such processes are almost surely invariant for the associated deterministic semi…
We introduce dynamic asymptotic dimension, a notion of dimension for actions of discrete groups on locally compact spaces, and more generally for locally compact étale groupoids. We study our notion for minimal actions of the integer group, its relation with conditions used by Bartels, Lück, and Reich in the context of controlled topology, and its connections with Gromov's theory of asymptotic dimension. We also show that dynamic asymptotic dimension gives bounds on the nuclear dimension of Winter and Zacharias for C*-algebras associated to dynamical systems. Dynamic asymptotic dimension also …
We study the asymptotic behavior of the sequence $\{Ω(n) \}_{ n \in \mathbb{N} }$ from a dynamical point of view, where $Ω(n)$ denotes the number of prime factors of $n$ counted with multiplicity. First, we show that for any non-atomic ergodic system $(X, \mathcal{B}, μ, T)$, the operators $T^{Ω(n)}: \mathcal{B} \to L^1(μ)$ have the strong sweeping-out property. In particular, this implies that the Pointwise Ergodic Theorem does not hold along $Ω(n)$. Second, we show that the behaviors of $Ω(n)$ captured by the Prime Number Theorem and Erdős-Kac Theorem are disjoint, in the sense that their dy…
Minkowski's First Theorem and Dirichlet's Approximation Theorem provide upper bounds on certain minima taken over lattice points contained in domains of Euclidean spaces. We study the distribution of such minima and show, under some technical conditions, that they exhibit Weibull asymptotics with respect to different natural measures on the space of unimodular lattices in $\bR^d$. This follows from very general Poisson approximation results for shrinking targets which should be of independent interest. Furthermore, we show in the appendix that the logarithm laws of Kleinbock-Margulis, Khinchin…
We propose a geometrical approach to the investigation of Hamiltonian systems on (Pseudo) Riemannian manifolds. A new geometrical criterion of instability and chaos is proposed. This approach is more generic than well known reduction to the geodesic flow. It is applicable to various astrophysical and cosmological problems.
We introduce a novel quantity for general dynamical systems, which we call the asymptotic uniform complexity. We prove an inequality relating the asymptotic uniform complexity of a dynamical system to its mean topological matching number. Furthermore, we show that the established inequality yields an exact equation for perfect Hausdorff dynamical systems. Utilizing these results, we conclude that a dynamical system is amenable if its asymptotic uniform complexity equals one, and that the converse is true for perfect Hausdorff dynamical systems, such as non-discrete Hausdorff topological groups…
In this paper the difference in the asymptotic dynamics between the nonlocal and local two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg models is investigated. It is shown that the bounds for the dimensions of the global attractors for the nonlocal and local Swift-Hohenberg models differ by an absolute constant, which depends only on the Rayleigh number, and upper and lower bounds of the kernel of the nonlocal nonlinearity. Even when this kernel of the nonlocal operator is a constant function, the dimension bounds of the global attractors still differ by an absolute constant depending on the Rayleigh number.
Let F be a foliation in a closed 3-manifold with negatively curved fundamental group and suppose that F is almost transverse to a quasigeodesic pseudo-Anosov flow. We show that the leaves of the foliation in the universal cover extend continuously to the sphere at infinity, hence the limit sets are continuous images of the circle. One important corollary is that if F is a Reebless finite depth foliation in a hyperbolic manifold, then it has the continuous extension property. Such finite depth foliations exist whenever the second Betti number is non zero. The result also applies to other classe…
We discuss several aspects of the geometry of vector fields in (Poincare'-Dulac) normal form. Our discussion relies substantially on Michel theory and aims at a constructive approach to simplify the analysis of normal forms via a splitting based on the action of certain groups. The case, common in Physics, of systems enjoying an a priori symmetry is also discussed in some detail.
