A successful method to describe the asymptotic behavior of various deterministic and stochastic processes such as asymptotically autonomous differential equations or stochastic approximation processes is to relate it to an appropriately chosen limit semiflow. Benaïm and Schreiber (2000) define a general class of such stochastic processes, which they call weak asymptotic pseudotrajectories and study their ergodic behavior. In particular, they prove that the weak* limit points of the empirical measures associated to such processes are almost surely invariant for the associated deterministic semiflow. Benaïm, Hofbauer and Sorin (2005) generalised this approach to set-valued dynamical systems. We pursue the analogy by extending to these settings the ergodic properties of weak asymptotic pseudotrajectories.
We prove martingale-ergodic and ergodic-martingale theorems with continuous parameter for vector valued Bochner integrable functions. We first prove almost everywhere convergence of vector valued martingales with continuous parameter. The norm as well as almost everywhere convergence of martingale-ergodic and ergodic-martingale averages are given. We also obtain the dominant and maximal inequalities. Finally, we show that a.e. martingale-ergodic and ergodic-martingale theorems will coincide under certain assumptions.
We prove weighted and vector-valued variational estimates for ergodic averages on $\mathbb{R}^d$. The weighted square function estimate relating ergodic averages to the dyadic martingale is obtained using an $\ell^r$ version of a reverse Hölder inequality for variation seminorms.
The classical Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (MET) of Oseledets is generalized here to cocycles taking values in a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. This allows for a continuous Lyapunov distribution.
We prove that systems satisfying the specification property are saturated in the sense that the topological entropy of the set of generic points of any invariant measure is equal to the measure-theoretic entropy of the measure. We study Banach valued Birkhoff ergodic averages and obtain a variational principle for its topological entropy spectrum. As application, we examine a particular example concerning with the set of real numbers for which the frequencies of occurrences in their dyadic expansions of infinitely many words are prescribed. This relies on our explicit determination of a maxima…
In this note we prove the a pointwise ergodic theorem for functions taking values in a separable complete CAT(0)-space, analogous to Lindenstrauss' pointwise ergodic theorem for real-valued integrable functions on a probability space subject to a probability-preserving action of an amenable l.c.s.c. group, where in the CAT(0) setting the role of ergodic averages is played by the barycentres of the empirical distributions of a CAT(0)-valued map along an orbit of the group action. The proof rests on an approximation argument and an appeal to that result for real-valued maps.
Vector-valued maximal inequalities and multi-parameter oscillation inequalities for the polynomial ergodic averages along multi-dimensional subsets of primes
We show that the measure of the spectrum of Schrödinger operator with potential defined by non-constant function over any minimal aperiodic finite subshift tends to zero, as the coupling constant tends to infinity. We also obtained a quantitative upper bound for the measure of the spectrum. This follows from a result we proved for ergodic Schrödinger operators with finitely valued potentials under two conditions on the recurrence property of the shift. We also show that one of these conditions is necessary for such result.
We form a sequence of oblong matrices by evaluating an integrable vector-valued function along the orbit of an ergodic dynamical system. We obtain an almost sure asymptotic result for the permanents of those matrices. We also give an application to symmetric means.
We consider random fields indexed by finite subsets of an amenable discrete group, taking values in the Banach-space of bounded right-continuous functions. The field is assumed to be equivariant, local, coordinate-wise monotone, and almost additive, with finite range dependence. Using the theory of quasi-tilings we prove an uniform ergodic theorem, more precisely, that averages along a Foelner sequence converge uniformly to a limiting function. Moreover we give explicit error estimates for the approximation in the sup norm.
In this paper we study unimodular amenable groups. The first part is devoted to results on the existence of uniform families of epsilon-quasi tilings for these groups. In this context, constructions of Ornstein and Weiss are extended by quantitative estimates for the covering properties of the corresponding decompositions. Afterwards, we apply the developed methods to obtain an abstract ergodic theorem for a class of functions mapping subsets of a countable, amenable group into some Banach space. This significantly extends and complements the previous results of Lenz, Müller, Schwarzenberger a…
In this paper, we study the multiple ergodic averages of a locally constant real-valued function in linear Cookie-Cutter dynamical systems. The multifractal spectrum of these multiple ergodic averages is completely determined.
In this paper, we establish UMD lattice-valued variational inequalities for differential operators, ergodic averages and analytic semigroups. These results generalize, on the one hand some scalar-valued variational inequalities in ergodic theory, on the other hand Xu's very recent result on UMD lattice-valued maximal inequality. As a consequence, we deduce the jump estimates and obtain quantitative information on the rate of the pointwise convergence.
One of the fundamental results of ergodic optimisation asserts that for any dynamical system on a compact metric space $X$ and for any Banach space of continuous real-valued functions on $X$ which embeds densely in $C(X)$ there exists a residual set of functions in that Banach space for which the maximising measure is unique. We extend this result by showing that this residual set is additionally prevalent, answering a question of J. Bochi and Y. Zhang.
We study strictly ergodic Delone dynamical systems and prove an ergodic theorem for Banach space valued functions on the associated set of pattern classes. As an application, we prove existence of the integrated density of states in the sense of uniform convergence in distribution for the associated random operators.
In this paper, we establish $\mathcal B$-valued variational inequalities for differential operators, ergodic averages and symmetric diffusion semigroups under the condition that Banach space $\mathcal B$ has martingale cotype property. These results generalize, on the one hand Pisier and Xu's result on the variational inequalities for $\mathcal B$-valued martingales, on the other hand many classical variational inequalities in harmonic analysis and ergodic theory. Moreover, we show that Rademacher cotype $q$ is necessary for the $\mathcal B$-valued $q$-variational inequalities. As applications…
We show that for every ergodic and aperiodic probability preserving system, there exists a $\mathbb{Z}$ valued, square integrable function $f$ such that the partial sums process of the time series $\left\{f\circ T^i\right\}_{i=0}^\infty$ satisfies the lattice local limit theorem.
Ergodic optimization is the study of problems relating to maximizing orbits, maximizing invariant measures and maximum ergodic averages. An orbit of a dynamical system is called f-maximizing if the time average of the real-valued function f along the orbit is larger than along all other orbits, and an invariant probability measure is called f-maximizing if it gives f a larger space average than does any other invariant probability measure. In this survey we consider the main strands of ergodic optimization, beginning with an influential model problem, and the interpretation of ergodic optimiza…
An asymptotic expansion is established for time averages of translation flows on flat surfaces. This result, which extends earlier work of A.Zorich and G.Forni, yields limit theorems for translation flows. The argument, close in spirit to that of G.Forni, uses the approximation of ergodic integrals by holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles on trajectories of the flows. The space of holonomy-invariant Hoelder cocycles is finite-dimensional, and is given by an explicit construction. First, a symbolic representation for a uniquely ergodic translation flow is obtained following S.Ito and A.M. Vershik…
We survey distributional properties of $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued cocycles of finite measure preserving ergodic transformations (or, equivalently, of stationary random walks in $\mathbb{R}^d$) which determine recurrence or transience.
In the present paper we investigate $L_0$-valued states and Markov operators on $ C^*$-algebras over $L_0$. In particular, we give representations for $L_0$-valued state and Markov operators on $ C^*$ algebras over $L_0$, respectively, as measurable bundles of states and Markov operators. Moreover, we apply the obtained representations to study certain ergodic properties of $ C^*$-dynamical systems over $L_0$.
In this paper we prove a general convergence theorem for almost-additive set functions on unimodular, amenable groups. These mappings take their values in some Banach space. By extending the theory of epsilon-quasi tiling techniques, we set the ground for far-reaching applications in the theory of group dynamics. In particular, we verify the almost-everywhere convergence of abstract approximable bounded, additive processes, as well as a Banach space approximation result for the spectral distribution function (integrated density of states) for random operators on discrete structures in a metric…
We study statistical properties of a family of maps acting in the space of integer valued sequences, which model dynamics of simple deterministic traffic flows. We obtain asymptotic (as time goes to infinity) properties of trajectories of those maps corresponding to arbitrary initial configurations in terms of statistics of densities of various patterns and describe weak attractors of these systems and the rate of convergence to them. Previously only the so called regular initial configurations (having a density with only finite fluctuations of partial sums around it) in the case of a slow par…
We present a data-driven framework for extracting complex spatiotemporal patterns generated by ergodic dynamical systems. Our approach, called Vector-valued Spectral Analysis (VSA), is based on an eigendecomposition of a kernel integral operator acting on a Hilbert space of vector-valued observables of the system, taking values in a space of functions (scalar fields) on a spatial domain. This operator is constructed by combining aspects of the theory of operator-valued kernels for machine learning with delay-coordinate maps of dynamical systems. In contrast to conventional eigendecomposition t…
We consider volume-preserving flows $(Φ^f_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ on $S\times \mathbb{R}$, where $S$ is a closed connected surface of genus $g\geq 2$ and $(Φ^f_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ has the form $Φ^f_t(x,y)=(ϕ_tx,y+\int_0^t f(ϕ_sx)ds)$, where $(ϕ_t)_{t\in\mathbb{R}}$ is a locally Hamiltonian flow of hyperbolic periodic type on $S$ and $f$ is a smooth real valued function on $S$. We investigate ergodic properties of these infinite measure-preserving flows and prove that if $f$ belongs to a space of finite codimension in $\mathscr{C}^{2+ε}(S)$, then the following dynamical dichotomy holds: if there …
We establish a multivariate empirical process central limit theorem for stationary $\R^d$-valued stochastic processes $(X_i)_{i\geq 1}$ under very weak conditions concerning the dependence structure of the process. As an application we can prove the empirical process CLT for ergodic torus automorphisms. Our results also apply to Markov chains and dynamical systems having a spectral gap on some Banach space of functions. Our proof uses a multivariate extension of the techniques introduced by Dehling, Durieu and Volný \cite{DehDurVol09} in the univariate case. As an important technical ingredien…
In this paper we study the ergodic theory of a class of symbolic dynamical systems $(Ø, T, μ)$ where $T:Ø\to Ø$ the left shift transformation on $Ø=\prod_0^\infty\{0,1\}$ and $μ$ is a $\s$-finite $T$-invariant measure having the property that one can find a real number $d$ so that $μ(τ^d)=\infty$ but $μ(τ^{d-ε})<\infty$ for all $ε>0$, where $τ$ is the first passage time function in the reference state 1. In particular we shall consider invariant measures $μ$ arising from a potential $V$ which is uniformly continuous but not of summable variation. If $d>0$ then $μ$ can be normalized to give the…
This paper has two themes that are intertwined: The first is the dynamics of certain piecewise affine maps on the Euclidean space that arise from a class of analog-to-digital conversion methods called Sigma-Delta quantization. The second is the analysis of reconstruction error associated to each such method. Sigma-Delta quantization generates approximate representations of functions by sequences that lie in a restricted set of discrete values. These are special sequences in that their local averages track the function values closely, thus enabling simple convolutional reconstruction. In this p…
In this survey we discuss spectral and quantum dynamical properties of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators whose potentials are obtained by real-valued sampling along the orbits of an ergodic invertible transformation. After an introductory part explaining basic spectral concepts and fundamental results, we present the general theory of such operators, and then provide an overview of known results for specific classes of potentials. Here we focus primarily on the cases of random and almost periodic potentials.
