For C1-smooth strongly monotone discrete-time dynamical systems, it is shown that ``convergence to linearly stable cycles" is a prevalent asymptotic behavior in the measuretheoretic sense. The results are then applied to classes of time-periodic parabolic equations and give new results on prevalence of convergence to periodic solutions. In particular, for equations with Neumann boundary conditions on convex domains, we show the prevalence of the set of initial conditions corresponding to the solutions that converge to spatiallyhomogeneous periodic solutions. While, for equations on radially symmetric domains, we obtain the prevalence of the set of initial values corresponding to solutions that are asymptotic to radially symmetric periodic solutions.
Classical results in the theory of monotone semiflows give sufficient conditions for the generic solution to converge toward an equilibrium or towards the set of equilibria (quasiconvergence). In this paper, we provide new formulations of these results in terms of the measure-theoretic notion of prevalence. For monotone reaction-diffusion systems with Neumann boundary conditions on convex domains, we show that the set of continuous initial data corresponding to solutions that converge to a spatially homogeneous equilibrium is prevalent. We also extend a previous generic convergence result to a…
We investigate the global dynamics from a measure-theoretic perspective for smooth flows with invariant cones of rank k. For such systems, it is shown that prevalent (or equivalently, almost all) orbits will be pseudo-ordered or convergent to equilibria. This reduces to Hirsch's prevalent convergence Theorem if the rank k=1; and implies an almost-sure Poincare-Bendixson Theorem for the case k=2. These results are then applied to obtain an almost sure Poincare-Bendixson theorem for high-dimensional differential equations.
We focus on the presence of almost automorphy in strongly monotone skew-product semiflows on Banach spaces. Under the $C^1$-smoothness assumption, it is shown that any linearly stable minimal set must be almost automorphic. This extends the celebrated result of Shen and Yi [Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 136(1998), No. 647] for the classical $C^{1,α}$-smooth systems. Based on this, one can reduce the regularity of the almost periodically forced differential equations and obtain the almost automorphic phenomena in a wider range.
Let K denote a compact invariant set for a strongly monotone semiflow in an ordered Banach space E, satisfying standard smoothness and compactness assumptions. Suppose the semiflow restricted to K is chain transitive. The main result is that either K is unordered, or else K is contained in totally ordered, compact arc of stationary points; and the latter cannot occur if the semiflow is real analytic and dissipative. As an application, entropy is 0 when E = R^3 . Analogous results are proved for maps. The main tools are results of Mierczynski [27 ] and Terescak [37 ]
We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applyi…
The present article introduces the notion of quasi-smoothness of marked rhythms through a certain transformation $Ref$, called reformation map. A marked rhythm consists of a rhythm together with a marker, and the map $Ref$ modifies the marked onset of the rhythm. It is shown that an iteration of the map $Ref$ transforms an arbitrary marked rhythm into a quasi-smooth one. A numerical criterion for a marked rhythm to be quasi-smooth is given in terms of the difference of its rhythm part. Through this criterion, the rhythm part of any quasi-smooth marked rhythm is shown to be smooth.
The conjugacy problem is one of the central questions in iteration theory. As far as we, for discontinuous strictly monotone maps there is no complete result. In this paper, we investigate the conjugacy problem of strictly monotone maps with only one jump discontinuity. We give some sufficient and necessary conditions for the conjugacy relationship. And we present some methods to construct all conjugacies. Furthermore, we present the conditions to guarantee $C^1$ smoothness of these conjugacies.
For strongly monotone dynamical systems, the dynamics alternative for smooth discrete-time systems turns out to be a perfect analogy of the celebrated Hirsch's limit-set dichotomy for continuous-time semiflows. In this paper, we first present a sharpened dynamics alternative for $C^1$-smooth strongly monotone discrete-time dissipative system $\{F_0^n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ (with an attractor $A$), which concludes that there is a positive integer $m$ such that any orbit is either manifestly unstable; or asymptotic to a linearly stable cycle whose minimal period is bounded by $m$. Furthermore, we …
We consider a $C^{1,α}$ smooth flow in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which is "strongly monotone" with respect to a cone $C$ of rank $k$, a closed set that contains a linear subspace of dimension $k$ and no linear subspaces of higher dimension. We prove that orbits with initial data from an open and dense subset of the phase space are either pseudo-ordered or convergent to equilibria. This covers the celebrated Hirsch's Generic Convergence Theorem in the case $k=1$, yields a generic Poincaré-Bendixson Theorem for the case $k=2$, and holds true with arbitrary dimension $k$. Our approach involves the ergodic a…
A version of the Dynamical Systems Method for solving ill-posed nonlinear equations with monotone and locally Hölder continuous operators is studied in this paper. A discrepancy principle is proposed and justified under natural and weak assumptions. The only smoothness assumption on $F$ is the local Hölder continuity of order $α>1/2$.
We investigate the convergence rates of the trajectories generated by implicit first and second order dynamical systems associated to the determination of the zeros of the sum of a maximally monotone operator and a monotone and Lipschitz continuous one in a real Hilbert space. We show that these trajectories strongly converge with exponential rate to a zero of the sum, provided the latter is strongly monotone. We derive from here convergence rates for the trajectories generated by dynamical systems associated to the minimization of the sum of a proper, convex and lower semicontinuous function …
We begin by considering second order dynamical systems of the from $\ddot x(t) + γ(t)\dot x(t) + λ(t)B(x(t))=0$, where $B: {\cal H}\rightarrow{\cal H}$ is a cocoercive operator defined on a real Hilbert space ${\cal H}$, $λ:[0,+\infty)\rightarrow [0,+\infty)$ is a relaxation function and $γ:[0,+\infty)\rightarrow [0,+\infty)$ a damping function, both depending on time. For the generated trajectories, we show existence and uniqueness of the generated trajectories as well as their weak asymptotic convergence to a zero of the operator $B$. The framework allows to address from similar perspectives…
This paper investigates first-order variable metric backward forward dynamical systems associated with monotone inclusion and convex minimization problems in real Hilbert space. The operators are chosen so that the backward-forward dynamical system is closely related to the forward-backward dynamical system and has the same computational complexity. We show existence, uniqueness, and weak asymptotic convergence of the generated trajectories and strong convergence if one of the operators is uniformly monotone. We also establish that an equilibrium point of the trajectory is globally exponential…
Smooth periodic travelling waves in the Camassa--Holm (CH) equation are revisited. We show that these periodic waves can be characterized in two different ways by using two different Hamiltonian structures. The standard formulation, common to the Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation, has several disadvantages, e.g., the period function is not monotone and the quadratic energy form may have two rather than one negative eigenvalues. We explore the nonstandard formulation and prove that the period function is monotone and the quadratic energy form has only one simple negative eigenvalue. We deduce a…
In the framework of a real Hilbert space, we address the problem of finding the zeros of the sum of a maximally monotone operator $A$ and a cocoercive operator $B$. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the trajectories generated by a second order equation with vanishing damping, attached to this problem, and governed by a time-dependent forward-backward-type operator. This is a splitting system, as it only requires forward evaluations of $B$ and backward evaluations of $A$. A proper tuning of the system parameters ensures the weak convergence of the trajectories to the set of zeros of $A + B$,…
We consider dissipative strongly competitive systems $\dot{x}_{i}=x_{i}f_{i}(x)$ of ordinary differential equations. It is known that for a wide class of such systems there exists an invariant attracting hypersurface $Σ$, called the carrying simplex. In this note we give an amenable condition for $Σ$ to be a $C^{1}$ submanifold-with-corners. We also provide conditions, based on a recent work of M. Bena\"ım "On invariant hypersurfaces of strongly monotone maps", J. Differential Equations 137 (1997), 302-319, guaranteeing that $Σ$ is of class $C^{k+1}$.
We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of one coupled PDE-ODE system arising in mathematical biology as a model for the development of a forest ecosystem. In the case where the ODE-component of the system is monotone, we establish the existence of a smooth global attractor of finite Hausdorff and fractal dimension. The case of the non-monotone ODE-component is much more complicated. In particular, the set of equilibria becomes non-compact here and contains a huge number of essentially discontinuous solutions. Nevertheless, we prove the stabilization of any trajectory to a single equilib…
