We study the dynamics of a transformation that acts on infinite paths in the graph associated with Pascal's triangle. For each ergodic invariant measure the asymptotic law of the return time to cylinders is given by a step function. We construct a representation of the system by a subshift on a two-symbol alphabet and then prove that the complexity function of this subshift is asymptotic to a cubic, the frequencies of occurrence of blocks behave in a regular manner, and the subshift is topologically weak mixing.
We interpret the Pascal-adic transformation as a generalized induced automorphism (over odometer) and formulate the $σ$-finite analog of odometer which is also known as "Hajian-Kakutani transformation" (former "Ohio state example"). We shortly suggest a sketch of the theory of random walks on the groups on the base of $σ$-finite ergodic theory.
We give the detale description from various points of view of Pascal automorphism,--- a natural transformation of the space of paths in the Pascal graph (= infinite Pascal triangle), and describetha plan of the proof of continuiuty of its spectrum. If we realize this automorphism as the shift in the space of 0-1 sequences, we obtain a stationary measure, called the Pascal measure, whose properties we study. The transformations generated by classical graded graphs, such as the ordinary and multidimensional Pascal graphs, the Young graph, the graph of walks in Weyl chambers, etc., provide exampl…
We consider arbitrary orderings of the edges entering each vertex of the (downward directed) Pascal graph. Each ordering determines an adic (Bratteli-Vershik) system, with a transformation that is defined on most of the space of infinite paths that begin at the root. We prove that for every ordering the coding of orbits according to the partition of the path space determined by the first three edges is essentially faithful, meaning that it is one-to-one on a set of paths that has full measure for every fully supported invariant probability measure. We also show that for every $k$ the subshift …
We introduce a family of adic transformations on diagrams that are nonstationary and nonsimple. This family includes some previously studied adic transformations. We relate the dimension group of each these diagrams to the dynamical system determined by the adic transformation on the infinite edge paths, and we explicitly compute the dimension group for a subfamily. We also determine the ergodic adic invariant probability measures for this subfamily, and show that each system of the subfamily is loosely Bernoulli. We also give examples of particular adic transformations with roots of unity as …
We define a random walk adic transformation associated to an aperiodic random walk on $G=\mathbb{Z}^{k}\times\mathbb{R}^{D-k}$ driven by a $β$-transformation and study its ergodic properties. In particular, this transformation is conservative, ergodic, infinite measure preserving and we prove that it is asymptotically distributionally stable and bounded rationally ergodic. Related earlier work appears in [AS] and [ANSS] for random walk adic transformations associated to an aperiodic random walk driven by a subshift of finite type.
There is only one fully supported ergodic invariant probability measure for the adic transformation on the space of infinite paths in the graph that underlies the Eulerian numbers. This result may partially justify a frequent assumption about the equidistribution of random permutations.
The Euler graph has vertices labelled (n,k) for n=0,1,2,... and k=0,1,...,n, with k+1 edges from (n,k) to (n+1,k) and n-k+1 edges from (n,k) to (n+1,k+1). The number of paths from (0,0) to (n,k) is the Eulerian number A(n,k), the number of permutations of 1,2,...,n+1 with exactly n-k falls and k rises. We prove that the adic (Bratteli-Vershik) transformation on the space of infinite paths in this graph is ergodic with respect to the symmetric measure.
In the paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for ergodicity (with respect to the normalized Haar measure) of discrete dynamical systems $<f;\mathbf S_{2^{-r}}(a)>$ on 2-adic spheres $\mathbf S_{2^{-r}}(a)$ of radius $2^{-r}$, $r\ge 1$, centered at some point $a$ from the ultrametric space of 2-adic integers $\mathbb Z_2$. The map $f\colon\mathbb Z_2\to\mathbb Z_2$ is assumed to be non-expanding and measure-preserving; that is, $f$ satisfies a Lipschitz condition with a constant 1 with respect to the 2-adic metric, and $f$ preserves a natural probability measure on $\mathbb Z_2$,…
We consider the adic realization of the Morse transformation on the additive group of integer dyadic numbers. We discuss the arithmetic properties of that action. Then we extend that action to the action of the group of rational dyadic numbers on the solenoid.
We prove that certain Gibbs measures on subshifts of finite type are nonsingular and ergodic for certain countable equivalence relations, including the orbit relation of the adic transformation (the same as equality after a permutation of finitely many coordinates). The relations we consider are defined by cocycles taking values in groups, including some nonabelian ones. This generalizes (half of) the identification of the invariant ergodic probability measures for the Pascal adic transformation as exactly the Bernoulli measures---a version of de Finetti's Theorem. Generalizing the other half,…
We prove the existence and describe limiting curves resulting from deviations in partial sums in the ergodic theorem for cylindrical functions and polynomial (self-similar) adic systems. For a general ergodic measure-preserving transformation and a summable function we give a necessary condition for a limiting curve to exist. Our work generalizes results by É. Janvresse, T. de la Rue and Y. Velenik and answers several questions from their work.
Let $\mathcal L_1$ be the set of all mappings $f\colon\Z_p\Z_p$ of the space of all $p$-adic integers $\Z_p$ into itself that satisfy Lipschitz condition with a constant 1. We prove that the mapping $f\in\mathcal L_1$ is ergodic with respect to the normalized Haar measure on $\Z_p$ if and only if $f$ induces a single cycle permutation on each residue ring $\Z/p^k\Z$ modulo $p^k$, for all $k=1,2,3,...$. The multivariate case, as well as measure-preserving mappings, are considered also. Results of the paper in a combination with earlier results of the author give explicit description of ergodic …
Dimension groups are complete invariants of strong orbit equivalence for minimal Cantor systems. This paper studies a natural family of minimal Cantor systems having a finitely generated dimension group, namely the primitive unimodular proper S-adic subshifts. They are generated by iterating sequences of substitutions. Proper substitutions are such that the images of letters start with a same letter, and similarly end with a same letter. This family includes various classes of subshifts such as Brun subshifts or dendric subshifts, that in turn include Arnoux-Rauzy subshifts and natural coding …
The automaton transformation of infinite words over alphabet $\mathbb F_p=\{0,1,\ldots,p-1\}$, where $p$ is a prime number, coincide with the continuous transformation (with respect to the $p$-adic metric) of a ring $\mathbb Z_p$ of $p$-adic integers. The objects of the study are non-Archimedean dynamical systems generated by automata mappings on the space $\mathbb Z_p$. Measure-preservation (with the respect to the Haar measure) and ergodicity of such dynamical systems plays an important role in cryptography (e.g. for pseudorandom generators and stream cyphers design). The possibility to use …
For any adic transformation $T$ defined on the path space $X$ of an ordered Bratteli diagram, endowed with a Markov measure $μ$, we construct an explicit dimension space (which corresponds to a matrix values random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$) whose Poisson boundary can be identified as a $\mathbb{Z}$-space with the dynamical system $(X,μ,T)$. We give a couple of examples to show how dimension spaces can be used in the study of nonsingular transformations.
An (asynchronous) automaton transformation of one-sided infinite words over p-letter alphabet Fp = Z/pZ, where p is a prime, is a continuous transformation (w.r.t. the p-adic metric) of the ring of p-adic integers Zp. Moreover, an automaton mapping generates a non-Archimedean dynamical system on Zp. Measure-preservation and ergodicity (w.r.t. the Haar measure) of such dynamical systems play an important role in cryptography (e.g., in stream cyphers). The aim of this paper is to present a novel way of realizing a complex shift in p-adics. In particular, we introduce conditions on the Mahler exp…
We study an interval exchange transformation of [0,1] formed by cutting the interval at the points 1/n and reversing the order of the intervals. We find that the transformation is periodic away from a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension zero. On the Cantor set, the dynamics are nearly conjugate to the 2-adic odometer.
This paper is devoted to the problem of ergodicity of $p$-adic dynamical systems. Our aim is to present criteria of ergodicity in terms of coordinate functions corresponding to digits in the canonical expansion of $p$-adic numbers. The coordinate representation can be useful, e.g., for applications to cryptography. Moreover, by using this representation we can consider non-smooth $p$-adic transformations. The basic technical toolsare van der Put series and usage of algebraic structure (permutations) induced by coordinate functions with partially frozen variables. We illustrate the basic theore…
A notion of dimension preservative map, \textit{Integral Value Transformations} (IVTs) is defined over $\mathbb{N}^k$ using the set of $p$-adic functions. Thereafter, two dimensional \textit{Integral Value Transformations} (IVTs) is systematically analyzed over $\mathbb{N} \times \mathbb{N}$ using pair of two variable Boolean functions. The dynamics of IVTs over $\mathbb{N} \times \mathbb{N}=\mathbb{N}^2$ is studied from algebraic perspective. It is seen that the dynamics of the IVTs solely depends on the dynamics (state transition diagram) of the pair of two variable Boolean functions. A set …
The goal of this paper is to analyze two measure preserving transformation of combinatorial and number-theoretical origin from the point of view of ergodic orbit theory. We study the Morse transformation (in its adic realization in the group $\textbf{Z}_2$ of integer dyadic numbers, as described by the author [{\sl J. Sov. Math.} {\textbf{28}}, 667-674 (1985); {\sl St. Petersburg Math. J.} {\textbf{6}} (1995), no. 3, 529-540]) and prove that it has the same orbit partition as the dyadic odometer. Then we give a precise description of time substitution of the odometer, which produces the Morse …
