Let $\mathcal L_1$ be the set of all mappings $f\colon\Z_p\Z_p$ of the space of all $p$-adic integers $\Z_p$ into itself that satisfy Lipschitz condition with a constant 1. We prove that the mapping $f\in\mathcal L_1$ is ergodic with respect to the normalized Haar measure on $\Z_p$ if and only if $f$ induces a single cycle permutation on each residue ring $\Z/p^k\Z$ modulo $p^k$, for all $k=1,2,3,...$. The multivariate case, as well as measure-preserving mappings, are considered also.
Results of the paper in a combination with earlier results of the author give explicit description of ergodic mappings from $\mathcal L_1$. This characterization is complete for $p=2$.
As an application we obtain a characterization of polynomials (and certain locally analytic functions) that induce ergodic transformations of $p$-adic spheres. The latter result implies a solution of a problem (posed by A.~Khrennikov) about the ergodicity of a perturbed monomial mapping on a sphere.
We define a random walk adic transformation associated to an aperiodic random walk on $G=\mathbb{Z}^{k}\times\mathbb{R}^{D-k}$ driven by a $β$-transformation and study its ergodic properties. In particular, this transformation is conservative, ergodic, infinite measure preserving and we prove that it is asymptotically distributionally stable and bounded rationally ergodic. Related earlier work appears in [AS] and [ANSS] for random walk adic transformations associated to an aperiodic random walk driven by a subshift of finite type.
We consider a family of $(2,1)$-rational functions given on the set of $p$-adic field $Q_p$. Each such function has a unique fixed point. We study ergodicity properties of the dynamical systems generated by $(2,1)$-rational functions. For each such function we describe all possible invariant spheres. We characterize ergodicity of each $p$-adic dynamical system with respect to Haar measure reduced on each invariant sphere. In particular, we found an invariant spheres on which the dynamical system is ergodic and on all other invariant spheres the dynamical systems are not ergodic.
There is only one fully supported ergodic invariant probability measure for the adic transformation on the space of infinite paths in the graph that underlies the Eulerian numbers. This result may partially justify a frequent assumption about the equidistribution of random permutations.
Monomial mappings, $x\mapsto x^n$, are topologically transitive and ergodic with respect to Haar measure on the unit circle in the complex plane. In this paper we obtain an anologous result for monomial dynamical systems over $p-$adic numbers. The process is, however, not straightforward. The result will depend on the natural number $n$. Moreover, in the $p-$adic case we never have ergodicity on the unit circle, but on the circles around the point 1.
In the paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for ergodicity (with respect to the normalized Haar measure) of discrete dynamical systems $<f;\mathbf S_{2^{-r}}(a)>$ on 2-adic spheres $\mathbf S_{2^{-r}}(a)$ of radius $2^{-r}$, $r\ge 1$, centered at some point $a$ from the ultrametric space of 2-adic integers $\mathbb Z_2$. The map $f\colon\mathbb Z_2\to\mathbb Z_2$ is assumed to be non-expanding and measure-preserving; that is, $f$ satisfies a Lipschitz condition with a constant 1 with respect to the 2-adic metric, and $f$ preserves a natural probability measure on $\mathbb Z_2$,…
The Euler graph has vertices labelled (n,k) for n=0,1,2,... and k=0,1,...,n, with k+1 edges from (n,k) to (n+1,k) and n-k+1 edges from (n,k) to (n+1,k+1). The number of paths from (0,0) to (n,k) is the Eulerian number A(n,k), the number of permutations of 1,2,...,n+1 with exactly n-k falls and k rises. We prove that the adic (Bratteli-Vershik) transformation on the space of infinite paths in this graph is ergodic with respect to the symmetric measure.
We study the dynamic structures of the monomial $x^m$ over the ring of $p$-adic integers for every positive integer $m$ and for primes $p=2,3$ and $5$. The dynamic structures are described by investigating minimal decompositions which consist of minimal subsystems and attracting basins.
For any 1-lipschitz ergodic map $F:\; \mathbb{Z}^{k}_{p} \mapsto \mathbb{Z}^{k}_{p},\;k>1\in\mathbb{N},$ there are 1-lipschitz ergodic map $G:\; \mathbb{Z}_{p} \mapsto \mathbb{Z}_{p}$ and two bijection $H_k$, $T_{k,\;P}$ that $$G = H_{k} \circ T_{k,\;P}\circ F\circ H^{-1}_{k} \text{ and } F = H^{-1}_{k} \circ T_{k,\;P^{-1}}\circ G\circ H_{k}.$$
We introduce a family of adic transformations on diagrams that are nonstationary and nonsimple. This family includes some previously studied adic transformations. We relate the dimension group of each these diagrams to the dynamical system determined by the adic transformation on the infinite edge paths, and we explicitly compute the dimension group for a subfamily. We also determine the ergodic adic invariant probability measures for this subfamily, and show that each system of the subfamily is loosely Bernoulli. We also give examples of particular adic transformations with roots of unity as …
For each prime number $p$, the dynamical behavior of the square mapping on the ring $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of $p$-adic integers is studied. For $p=2$, there are only attracting fixed points with their attracting basins. For $p\geq 3$, there are a fixed point $0$ with its attracting basin, finitely many periodic points around which there are countably many minimal components and some balls of radius $1/p$ being attracting basins. All these minimal components are precisely exhibited for different primes $p$.
We prove the existence and describe limiting curves resulting from deviations in partial sums in the ergodic theorem for cylindrical functions and polynomial (self-similar) adic systems. For a general ergodic measure-preserving transformation and a summable function we give a necessary condition for a limiting curve to exist. Our work generalizes results by É. Janvresse, T. de la Rue and Y. Velenik and answers several questions from their work.
The automaton transformation of infinite words over alphabet $\mathbb F_p=\{0,1,\ldots,p-1\}$, where $p$ is a prime number, coincide with the continuous transformation (with respect to the $p$-adic metric) of a ring $\mathbb Z_p$ of $p$-adic integers. The objects of the study are non-Archimedean dynamical systems generated by automata mappings on the space $\mathbb Z_p$. Measure-preservation (with the respect to the Haar measure) and ergodicity of such dynamical systems plays an important role in cryptography (e.g. for pseudorandom generators and stream cyphers design). The possibility to use …
We discuss Linnik's work on the distribution of integral solutions to $x^2+y^2+z^2 =d$, as $d$ goes to infinity. We give an exposition of Linnik's ergodic method; indeed, by using large-deviation results for random walks on expander graphs, we establish a refinement of his equidistribution theorem. We discuss the connection of these ideas with modern developments (ergodic theory on homogeneous spaces, $L$-functions).
We prove that arithmetic quantum unique ergodicity holds on compact arithmetic quotients of $GL(2,\mathbb{Q}_p)$ for automorphic forms belonging to the principal series. We interpret this conclusion in terms of the equidistribution of eigenfunctions on covers of a fixed regular graph or along nested sequences of regular graphs. Our results are the first of their kind on any p-adic arithmetic quotient. They may be understood as analogues of Lindenstrauss's theorem on the equidistribution of Maass forms on a compact arithmetic surface. The new ingredients here include the introduction of a repre…
Motivated by a question of Erdős, this paper considers questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the 3-adic integers given by multiplication by 2. Let the 3-adic Cantor set consist of all 3-adic integers whose expansions use only the digits 0 and 1. The exception set is the set of 3-adic integers whose forward orbits under this action intersects the 3-adic Cantor set infinitely many times. It has been shown that this set has Hausdorff dimension 0. Approaches to upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets leads to study of intersections of multiplicative translates of Can…
Let $K/\mathbf Q$ be a degree $d$ extension. Inside the ring of integers $\mathcal O_K$ we define the set of $k$-free integers $\mathcal F_k$ and a natural $\mathcal O_K$-action on the space of binary $\mathcal O_K$-indexed sequences, equipped with an $\mathcal O_K$-invariant probability measure associated to $\mathcal F_k$. We prove that this action is ergodic, has pure point spectrum and is isomorphic to a $\mathbf Z^d$-action on a compact abelian group. In particular, it is not weakly mixing and has zero measure-theoretical entropy. This work generalizes the paper by the first author and Si…
This article introduces a new kind of number systems on $p$-adic integers which is inspired by the well-known $3n+1$ conjecture of Lothar Collatz. A $p$-adic system is a piecewise function on $\mathbb{Z}_p$ which has branches for all residue classes modulo $p$ and whose dynamics can be used to define digit expansions of $p$-adic integers which respect congruency modulo powers of $p$ and admit a distinctive "block structure". $p$-adic systems generalize several notions related to $p$-adic integers such as permutation polynomials and put them under a common framework, allowing for results and te…
We interpret the Pascal-adic transformation as a generalized induced automorphism (over odometer) and formulate the $σ$-finite analog of odometer which is also known as "Hajian-Kakutani transformation" (former "Ohio state example"). We shortly suggest a sketch of the theory of random walks on the groups on the base of $σ$-finite ergodic theory.
We consider the adic realization of the Morse transformation on the additive group of integer dyadic numbers. We discuss the arithmetic properties of that action. Then we extend that action to the action of the group of rational dyadic numbers on the solenoid.
In this paper the group structure of the $p$-adic ball and sphere are studied. The dynamical system of isometry defined on invariant sphere is investigated. We define the binary operations $\oplus$ and $\odot$ on a ball and sphere respectively, and prove that this sets are compact topological abelian group with respect to the operations. Then we show that any two balls (spheres) with positive radius are isomorphic as groups. We prove that the Haar measure introduced in $\mathbb Z_p$ is also a Haar measure on an arbitrary balls and spheres. We study the dynamical system generated by the isometr…
We study the dynamics of a transformation that acts on infinite paths in the graph associated with Pascal's triangle. For each ergodic invariant measure the asymptotic law of the return time to cylinders is given by a step function. We construct a representation of the system by a subshift on a two-symbol alphabet and then prove that the complexity function of this subshift is asymptotic to a cubic, the frequencies of occurrence of blocks behave in a regular manner, and the subshift is topologically weak mixing.
An (asynchronous) automaton transformation of one-sided infinite words over p-letter alphabet Fp = Z/pZ, where p is a prime, is a continuous transformation (w.r.t. the p-adic metric) of the ring of p-adic integers Zp. Moreover, an automaton mapping generates a non-Archimedean dynamical system on Zp. Measure-preservation and ergodicity (w.r.t. the Haar measure) of such dynamical systems play an important role in cryptography (e.g., in stream cyphers). The aim of this paper is to present a novel way of realizing a complex shift in p-adics. In particular, we introduce conditions on the Mahler exp…
The paper describes ergodic (with respect to the Haar measure) functions in the class of all functions, which are defined on (and take values in) the ring of p-adic integers, and which satisfy (at least, locally) Lipschitz condition with coefficient 1. Equiprobable (in particular, measure-preserving) functions of this class are described also. In some cases (and especially for p=2) the descriptions are given by explicit formulae. Some of the results may be viewed as descriptions of ergodic isometric dynamical systems on p-adic unit disk. The study was motivated by the problem of pseudorandom n…
We define an infinite graded graph of ordered pairs and a~canonical action of the group $\mathbb{Z}$ (the adic action) and of the infinite sum of groups of order two~$\mathcal{D}=\sum_1^{\infty} \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ on the path space of the graph. It is proved that these actions are universal for both groups in the following sense: every ergodic action of these groups with invariant measure and binomial generator, multiplied by a~special action (the `odometer'), is metrically isomorphic to the canonical adic action on the path space of the graph with a~central measure. We consider a~series …
We prove that certain Gibbs measures on subshifts of finite type are nonsingular and ergodic for certain countable equivalence relations, including the orbit relation of the adic transformation (the same as equality after a permutation of finitely many coordinates). The relations we consider are defined by cocycles taking values in groups, including some nonabelian ones. This generalizes (half of) the identification of the invariant ergodic probability measures for the Pascal adic transformation as exactly the Bernoulli measures---a version of de Finetti's Theorem. Generalizing the other half,…
Examining multiple ergodic averages whose iterates are integer parts of real valued polynomials for totally ergodic systems, we provide various characterizations of total joint ergodicity, meaning that an average converges to the "expected" limit along every arithmetic progression. In particular, we obtain a complete characterization when the number of iterates is at most two, and disprove a conjecture of the first author. We also improve a result of Frantzikinakis on joint ergodicity of Hardy field functions of at most polynomial growth for totally ergodic systems, which extends a conjecture …
We give a formula for generalized Eulerian numbers, prove monotonicity of sequences of certain ratios of the Eulerian numbers, and apply these results to obtain a new proof that the natural symmetric measure for the Bratteli-Vershik dynamical system based on the Euler graph is the unique fully supported invariant ergodic Borel probability measure. Key ingredients of the proof are a two-dimensional induction argument and a one-to-one correspondence between most paths from two vertices at the same level to another vertex.
A criterion of joint ergodicity of several sequences of transformations of a probability measure space $X$ of the form $T_{i}^{ϕ_{i}(n)}$ is given for the case where $T_{i}$ are commuting measure preserving transformations of $X$ and $ϕ_{i}$ are integer valued generalized linear functions, that is, the functions formed from conventional linear functions by an iterated use of addition, multiplication by constants, and the greatest integer function. We also establish a similar criterion for joint ergodicity of families of transformations depending of a continuous parameter, as well as a conditio…
In her thesis, Mirzakhani showed that the number of simple closed geodesics of length $\leq L$ on a closed, connected, oriented hyperbolic surface $X$ of genus $g$ is asymptotic to $L^{6g-6}$ times a constant depending on the geometry of $X$. In this survey we give a detailed account of Mirzakhani's proof of this result aimed at non-experts. We draw inspiration from classic primitive lattice point counting results in homogeneous dynamics. The focus is on understanding how the general principles that drive the proof in the case of lattices also apply in the setting of hyperbolic surfaces.
Szemerédi's Theorem states that a set of integers with positive upper density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Bergelson and Leibman generalized this, showing that sets of integers with positive upper density contain arbitrarily long polynomial configurations; Szemerédi's Theorem corresponds to the linear case of the polynomial theorem. We focus on the case farthest from the linear case, that of rationally independent polynomials. We derive results in ergodic theory and in combinatorics for rationally independent polynomials, showing that their behavior differs sharply from t…
