In this paper we give a new sufficient condition for asymptotic periodicity of Frobenius-Perron operator corresponding to two--dimensional maps. The result of the asymptotic periodicity for strictly expanding systems, that is, all eigenvalues of the system are greater than one, in a high-dimensional dynamical systems was already known. Our new theorem enables to apply for the system having an eigenvalue smaller than one. The key idea for the proof is a function of bounded variation defined by line integration. Finally, we introduce a new two-dimensional dynamical system exhibiting the asymptotic periodicity with different periods depending on parameter values, and discuss to apply our theorem to the model.
It is known that the Perron--Frobenius operators of piecewise expanding $\mathcal{C}^2$ transformations possess an asymptotic periodicity of densities. On the other hand, external noise or measurement errors are unavoidable in practical systems; therefore, all realistic mathematical models should be regarded as random iterations of transformations. This paper aims to discuss the effects of randomization on the asymptotic periodicity of densities.
We show that for almost every $(P,λ)$ where $P$ is a convex polygon and $λ\in(0,1)$, the corresponding outer billiard about $P$ with contraction $λ$ is asymptotically periodic, i.e., has a finite number of periodic orbits and every orbit is attracted to one of them.
Noise-induced statistical periodicity in a class of one-dimensional maps is studied. We show the existence of statistical periodicity in a modified Lasota-Mackey map and describe the phenomenon in terms of almost cyclic sets. A transition from a stable state to a periodic state of the density depending on the noise level is observed in numerical investigations based on trajectory averages and by means of a transfer operator approach. We conclude that the statistical periodicity is the origin of the almost periodicity in noise-induced order.
Given a self-map of a compact metric space $X$, we study periodic points of the map induced on the hyperspace of closed subsets of $X$. We give some necessary conditions on admissible sets of periods for these maps. Seemingly unrelated to this, we construct an almost totally minimal homeomorphism of the Cantor set. We also apply our theory to give a full description of admissible period sets for induced maps of the interval maps. The description of admissible periods is also given for maps induced on symmetric products.
The dynamics of a 1-parameter family of cluster maps $φ_r$ associated to mutation-periodic quivers in dimension 4, is studied in detail. The use of presymplectic reduction leads to a globally periodic symplectic map, and this enables us to reduce the problem to the study of maps belonging to a group of symplectic birational maps of the plane which is isomorphic to $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})\ltimes\mathbb{R}^2$. We conclude that there are three different types of dynamical behaviour for $φ_r$ characterized by the integer parameter values $r=1$, $r=2$ and $r>2$. For each type, the periodic points, the st…
We face the problem of characterizing the periodic cases in parametric families of (real or complex) rational diffeomorphisms having a fixed point. Our approach relies on the Normal Form Theory, to obtain necessary conditions for the existence of a formal linearization of the map, and on the introduction of a suitable rational parametrization of the parameters of the family. Using these tools we can find a finite set of values p for which the map can be p-periodic, reducing the problem of finding the parameters for which the periodic cases appear to simple computations. We apply our results to…
We study the dynamics of discrete-time regulatory networks on random digraphs. For this we define ensembles of deterministic orbits of random regulatory networks, and introduce some statistical indicators related to the long-term dynamics of the system. We prove that, in a random regulatory network, initial conditions converge almost surely to a periodic attractor. We study the subnetworks, which we call modules, where the periodic asymptotic oscillations are concentrated. We proof that those modules are dynamically equivalent to independent regulatory networks.
We determine periodic and aperiodic points of certain piecewise affine maps in the Euclidean plane. Using these maps, we prove for $λ\in\{\frac{\pm1\pm\sqrt5}2,\pm\sqrt2,\pm\sqrt3\}$ that all integer sequences $(a_k)_{k\in\mathbb Z}$ satisfying $0\le a_{k-1}+λa_k+a_{k+1}<1$ are periodic.
We study the iterative behavior of the family of 3-step linear fractional recurrences and the family of birational maps they define. We determine all the possible periodicities within this family or, equivalently, the birational maps of finite order. This family also contains pseudo-automorphisms of infinite order. One such family consists of completely integrable maps, and another family consists of maps of positive entropy. Both of these families have invariant families of $K3$ surfaces.
We consider a linear transport equation on the edges of a network with time-varying coefficients. Using methods for non-autonomous abstract Cauchy problems, we obtain well-posedness of the problem and describe the asymptotic profile of the solutions under certain natural conditions on the network. We further apply our theory to a model used for air traffic flow management.
Our aim in this paper is to deal with the dynamics of following higher order difference equation x_{n+1}=A+B((x_{n-m})/(x_{n}^2)) where A,B>0, and initial values are positive, and m={1,2,...}. Furthermore, we discuss the periodicity, boundedness, semi-cycles, global asymptotic stability of solutions of these equations. We also handle the rate of convergence of solutions of these difference equations.
Networks of coupled degrade-and-fire (DF) oscillators are simple dynamical models of assemblies of interacting self-repressing genes. For mean-field interactions, which most mathematical studies have assumed so far, every trajectory must approach a periodic orbit. Moreover, asymptotic cluster distributions can be computed explicitly in terms of coupling intensity, and a massive collection of distributions collapses when this intensity passes a threshold. Here, we show that most of these dynamical features persist for an arbitrary coupling topology. In particular, we prove that, in any system o…
Using results relating the complexity of a two dimensional subshift to its periodicity, we obtain an application to the well-known conjecture of Furstenberg on a Borel probability measure on $[0,1)$ which is invariant under both $x\mapsto px \pmod 1$ and $x\mapsto qx \pmod 1$, showing that any potential counterexample has a nontrivial lower bound on its complexity.
A two-dimensional system of differential equations with delay modelling the glucose-insulin interaction processes in the human body is considered. Sufficient conditions are derived for the unique positive equilibrium in the system to be globally asymptotically stable. They are given in terms of the global attractivity of the fixed point in a limiting interval map. The existence of slowly oscillating periodic solutions is shown in the case when the equilibrium is unstable. The mathematical results are supported by extensive numerical simulations. It is shown that typical behaviour in the system…
The purpose of this paper is to initiate a theory concerning the dynamics of asymptotically holomorphic polynomial-like maps. Our maps arise naturally as deep renormalizations of asymptotically holomorphic extensions of $C^r$ ($r>3$) unimodal maps that are infinitely renormalizable of bounded type. Here we prove a version of the Fatou-Julia-Sullivan theorem and a topological straightening theorem in this setting. In particular, these maps do not have wandering domains and their Julia sets are locally connected.
We study dynamics of continuous maps on compact metrizable spaces containing a free interval (i.e., an open subset homeomorphic to an open interval). A special attention is paid to relationships between topological transitivity, weak and strong topological mixing, dense periodicity and topological entropy as well as to the topological structure of minimal sets. In particular, a trichotomy for minimal sets and a dichotomy for transitive maps are proved.
In this paper, we define bi-asymptotically $c$-expansive maps on metric spaces and study its relationship with other variants of expansivity such as bi-asymptotically expansive maps and $N$-expansive maps. We also provide an example to establish that expansive homeomorphisms need not be bi-asymptotically expansive. Finally we prove a spectral decomposition theorem for bi-asymptotically $c$-expansive continuous surjective maps with the shadowing property on compact metric spaces.
We study the rate of convergence to zero of the tail entropy of $C^\infty$ maps. We give an upper bound of this rate in terms of the growth in $k$ of the derivative of order $k$ and give examples showing the optimality of the established rate of convergence. We also consider the case of multimodal maps of the interval. Finally we prove that homoclinic tangencies give rise to $C^r$ $(r\geq 2)$ robustly non $h$-expansive dynamical systems.
We study the asymptotic expansion of smooth one-dimensional maps. We give an example of an interval map for which the optimal shrinking of components exponential rate is not attained for any neighborhood of a certain fixed point in the boundary of a periodic Fatou component. We prove a general result asserting that, when this happens the components do shrink exponentially, although the rate is not the optimal one. Finally, we give an example of a polynomial with real coefficients, such that all its critical points in the complex plane are real, and such that its asymptotic expansion as a compl…
We study independent and identically distributed random iterations of continuous maps defined on a connected closed subset $S$ of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{k}$. We assume the maps are monotone (with respect to a suitable partial order) and a "topological" condition on the maps. Then, we prove the existence of a pullback random attractor whose distribution is the unique stationary measure of the random iteration, and we obtain the synchronization of random orbits. As a consequence of the synchronization phenomenon, a functional central limit theorem is established.
We consider a smooth two-parameter family $f_{a,L}\colonθ\mapsto θ+a+LΦ(θ)$ of circle maps with a finite number of critical points. For sufficiently large $L$ we construct a set $A_L^{(\infty)}$ of $a$-values of positive Lebesgue measure for which the corresponding $f_{a,L}$ exhibits an exponential growth of derivatives along the orbits of the critical points. Our construction considerably improves the previous one of Wang and Young for the same class of families, in that the following asymptotic estimate holds: the Lebesgue measure of $A_L^{(\infty)}$ tends to full measure in $a$-space as $L$…
The tent map family is arguably the simplest 1-parametric family of maps with non-trivial dynamics and it is still an active subject of research. In recent works the second author, jointly with J. Yorke, studied the graph and backward limits of S-unimodal maps. In this article we generalize those results to tent-like unimodal maps. By tent-like here we mean maps that share fundamental properties that characterize tent maps, namely unimodal maps without wandering intervals nor attracting cycles and whose graph has a finite number of nodes.
A discrete dynamical system in Euclidean m-space generated by the iterates of an asymptotically zero map f, satisfying f(x) goes to zero as x goes to infinity, must have a compact global attracting set $A $. The question of what additional hypotheses are sufficient to guarantee that A has a minimal (invariant) subset A* that is a chaotic strange attractor is answered in detail for a few types of asymptotically zero maps. These special cases happen to have many applications (especially as mathematical models for a variety of processes in ecological and population dynamics), some of which are pr…
We associate to each non-degenerate smooth interval map a number measuring its global asymptotic expansion. We show that this number can be calculated in various different ways. A consequence is that several natural notions of nonuniform hyperbolicity coincide. In this way we obtain an extension to interval maps with an arbitrary number of critical points of the remarkable result of Nowicki and Sands characterizing the Collet-Eckmann condition for unicritical maps. This also solves a conjecture of Luzzatto in dimension 1. Combined with a result of Nowicki and Przytycki, these considerations im…
In this paper we are concerned with quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps such that the one dimensional map (before forcing) is unimodal and it has a full cascade of period doubling bifurcations. Between one period doubling and the next one it is known that there exist a parameter value where the $2^n$-periodic orbit is superatracting. In a previous work we proposed an extension of the one-dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the quasi-periodic case. We proved that, if the family satisfies suitable hypoth…
We study the asymptotic dynamics of maps which are piecewise contracting on a compact space. These maps are Lipschitz continuous, with Lipschitz constant smaller than one, when restricted to any piece of a finite and dense union of disjoint open pieces. We focus on the topological and the dynamical properties of the (global) attractor of the orbits that remain in this union. As a starting point, we show that the attractor consists of a finite set of periodic points when it does not intersect the boundary of a contraction piece, which complements similar results proved for more specific classes…
We consider multimodal maps with holes and study the evolution of the open systems with respect to equilibrium states for both geometric and Hölder potentials. For small holes, we show that a large class of initial distributions share the same escape rate and converge to a unique absolutely continuous conditionally invariant measure; we also prove a variational principle connecting the escape rate to the pressure on the survivor set, with no conditions on the placement of the hole. Finally, introducing a weak condition on the centre of the hole, we prove scaling limits for the escape rate for …
For a class of flows on polytopes, including many examples from Evolutionary Game Theory, we describe a piecewise linear model which encapsulates the asymptotic dynamics along the heteroclinic network formed out of the polytope's vertexes and edges. This piecewise linear flow is easy to compute even in higher dimensions, which allows the usage of numeric algorithms to find invariant dynamical structures such as periodic, homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits, which if robust persist as invariant dynamical structures of the original flow. We apply this method to prove the existence of chaotic behav…
It is shown that discrete analogs of z^c and log(z) have the same asymptotic behavior as their smooth counterparts. These discrete maps are described in terms of special solutions of discrete Painleve-II equations, asymptotics of these solutions providing the behaviour of discrete z^c and log(z) at infinity.
We show that the tangential speed of a parabolic semigroup of holomorphic self-maps in the unit disc is asymptotically bounded from above by (1/2)logt, proving a conjecture by Bracci. In order to show the proof we need a result of "asymptotical monotonicity" of the tangential speed for proper pairs of parabolic semigroups with positive hyperbolic step.
We show that for every "locally finite" unit-preserving completely positive map P acting on a C*-algebra, there is a corresponding *-automorphism αof another unital C*-algebra such that the two sequences P, P^2,P^3,... and α, α^2,α^3,... have the same {\em asymptotic} behavior. The automorphism αis uniquely determined by P up to conjugacy. Similar results hold for normal completely positive maps on von Neumann algebras, as well as for one-parameter semigroups. These results can be viewed as operator algebraic counterparts of the classical Perron-Frobenius theorem on the structure of square mat…
We consider escape from chaotic maps through a subset of phase space, the hole. Escape rates are known to be locally constant functions of the hole position and size. In spite of this, for the doubling map we can extend the current best result for small holes, a linear dependence on hole size h, to include a smooth h^2 ln h term and explicit fractal terms to h^2 and higher orders, confirmed by numerical simulations. For more general hole locations the asymptotic form depends on a dynamical Diophantine condition using periodic orbits ordered by stability.
We establish a new functional central limit theorem result for non-invertible measure preserving maps that are not necessarily ergodic, using the Perron-Frobenius operator. We apply the result to asymptotically periodic transformations and give an extensive specific example of asymptotically periodic transformations by using the tent map.
A Thurston map is a branched covering map from $§^2$ to $§^2$ with a finite postcritical set. We associate a natural Gromov hyperbolic graph $\G=\G(f,\mathcal C)$ with an expanding Thurston map $f$ and a Jordan curve $\mathcal C$ on $§^2$ containing $\post(f)$. The boundary at infinity of $\G$ with associated visual metrics can be identified with $§^2$ equipped with the visual metric induced by the expanding Thurston map $f$. We define asymptotic upper curvature of an expanding Thurston map $f$ to be the asymptotic upper curvature of the associated Gromov hyperbolic graph, and establish a conn…
We consider a $\mathbb{R}$-extension of one dimensional uniformly expanding open dynamical systems and prove a new explicit estimate for the asymptotic spectral gap. To get these results, we use a new application of a "global normal form" for the dynamical system, a "semiclassical expression beyond the Ehrenfest time" that expresses the transfer operator at large time as a sum over rank one operators (each is associated to one orbit). In this paper we establish the validity of the so-called "diagonal approximation" up to twice the local Ehrenfest time.
We consider skew-product maps over circle rotations $x\mapsto x+α$ (mod 1) with factors that take values in SL(2,R). This includes maps of almost Mathieu type. In numerical experiments, with $α$ the inverse golden mean, Fibonacci iterates of maps from the almost Mathieu family exhibit asymptotic scaling behavior that is reminiscent of critical phase transitions. In a restricted setup that is characterized by a symmetry, we prove that critical behavior indeed occurs and is universal in an open neighborhood of the almost Mathieu family. This behavior is governed by a periodic orbit of a renormal…
