In this paper, we investigate the convergence of solutions of a stochastic representation of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations to those of their primitive equations counterpart. Our analysis covers both weak and strong convergence regimes, corresponding respectively to rigid-lid and "fully periodic" boundary conditions. Furthermore, we explore the impact of relaxing the hydrostatic assumption in the stochastic primitive equations by retaining martingale terms as deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium. This modified model, obtained through a specific asymptotic scaling accessible only within the stochastic framework, captures non-hydrostatic effects while remaining within the primitive equations formalism. The resulting generalized hydrostatic model has been shown to be well-posed when the additional terms are regularized using a suitable filter for divergence-free noises under suitable assumptions. Within this setting, we demonstrate that the model provides a higher-order approximation of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations for appropriately scaled noises.
In this paper, we first prove the global well-posedness of a scaled anisotropic Navier-Stokes system and the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system in a 2-D striped domain with small analytic data in the tangential variable. Then we justify the limit from the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system with analytic data.
In this paper, we justify the limit from the Navier-Stokes system in a thin domain to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system for the convex initial data with Gevrey 9/8 regualrity in $x$.
In this paper we study the hydrostatic limit of the Navier-Stokes-alpha model in a very thin striped domain. We derive some Prandtl-type limit equations for this model and we prove the global well-posedness of the limit system for small initial conditions in an appropriate analytic function space.
We address the local well-posedness of the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations. These equations, sometimes called reduced Navier-Stokes/Prandtl, appear as a formal limit of the Navier-Stokes system in thin domains, under certain constraints on the aspect ratio and the Reynolds number. It is known that without any structural assumption on the initial data, real-analyticity is both necessary and sufficient for the local well-posedness of the system. In this paper we prove that for convex initial data, local well-posedness holds under simple Gevrey regularity.
In this work, we obtain the hydrostatic approximation by taking the small aspect ratio limit to the Navier-Stokes equations. The aspect ratio (the ratio of the depth to horizontal width) is a geometrical constraint in general large scale geophysical motions that the vertical scale is significantly smaller than horizontal. We use the versatile relative entropy inequality to prove rigorously the limit from the compressible Navier-Stokes equations to the compressible Primitive Equations. This is the first work to use relative entropy inequality for proving hydrostatic approximation and derive the…
We consider the hyperbolic version of three-dimensional anisotropic Naver-Stokes equations in a thin strip and its hydrostatic limit that is a hyperbolic Prandtl type equations. We prove the global-in-time existence and uniqueness for the two systems and the hydrostatic limit when the initial data belong to the Gevrey function space with index 2. The proof is based on a direct energy method by observing the damping effect in the systems.
We investigate the hydrostatic approximation of a hyperbolic version of Navier-Stokes equations, which is obtained by using Cattaneo type law instead of Fourier law, evolving in a thin strip $\R\times (0,\varepsilon)$. The formal limit of these equations is a hyperbolic Prandtl type equation. We first prove the global existence of solutions to these equations under a uniform smallness assumption on the data in Gevrey $2$ class. Then we justify the limit globally-in-time from the anisotropic hyperbolic Navier-Stokes system to the hyperbolic Prandtl system with such Gevrey $2$ class data. Compar…
An important feature of the planetary oceanic dynamics is that the aspect ratio (the ratio of the depth to horizontal width) is very small. As a result, the hydrostatic approximation (balance), derived by performing the formal small aspect ratio limit to the Navier-Stokes equations, is considered as a fundamental component in the primitive equations of the large-scale ocean. In this paper, we justify rigorously the small aspect ratio limit of the Navier-Stokes equations to the primitive equations. Specifically, we prove that the Navier-Stokes equations, after being scaled appropriately by the …
The primitive equations are fundamental models in geophysical fluid dynamics and derived from the scaled Navier-Stokes equations. In the primitive equations, the evolution equation to the vertical velocity is replaced by the so-called hydrostatic approximation. In this paper, we give a justification of the hydrostatic approximation by the scaled Navier-Stoke equations in anisotropic spaces $L^\infty_H L^q_{x_3} (\Torus^3)$ for $q \geq 1$.
In this paper we justify the hydrostatic approximation of the primitive equations in the maximal $L^p$-$L^q$-setting in the three-dimensional layer domain $Ω= \Torus^2 \times (-1, 1)$ under the no-slip (Dirichlet) boundary condition in any time interval $(0, T)$ for $T>0$. We show that the solution to the scaled Navier-Stokes equations with Besov initial data $u_0 \in B^{s}_{q,p}(Ω)$ for $s > 2 - 2/p + 1/ q$ converges to the solution to the primitive equations with the same initial data in $\mathbb{E}_1 (T) = W^{1, p}(0, T ; L^q (Ω)) \cap L^p(0, T ; W^{2, q} (Ω)) $ with order $O(ε)$ where $(p,…
Consider the anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations as well as the primitive equations. It is shown that the horizontal velocity of the solution to the anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations in a cylindrical domain of height $\varepsilon $ with initial data $u_0=(v_0,w_0)\in B^{2-2/p}_{q,p}$, $1/q+1/p\le 1$ if $q\ge 2$ and $4/3q+2/3p\le 1$ if $q\le 2$, converges as $\varepsilon \to 0$ with convergence rate $\mathcal{O} (\varepsilon )$ to the horizontal velocity of the solution to the primitive equations with initial data $v_0$ with respect to the maximal-$L^p$-$L^q$-regularity norm. Since the differ…
In this paper, we study a hyperbolic version of the Navier-Stokes equations, obtained by using the approximation by relaxation of the Euler system, evolving in a thin strip domain. The formal limit of these equations is a hyperbolic Prandtl type equation, our goal is to prove the existence and uniqueness of a global solution to these equations for analytic initial data in the tangential variable, under a uniform smallness assumption. Then we justify the limit from the anisotropic hyperbolic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic hyperbolic Navier-Stokes system with small analytic data.
In this paper, we provide rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation and the derivation of primitive equations as the small aspect ratio limit of the incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the anisotropic horizontal viscosity regime. Setting $\varepsilon >0$ to be the small aspect ratio of the vertical to the horizontal scales of the domain, we investigate the case when the horizontal and vertical viscosities in the incompressible three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are of orders $O(1)$ and $O(\varepsilon^α)$, respectively, with $α>2$, for which the limi…
We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the gravitational hydrostatic equilibrium for the general equation of state of pressure-density relation in the framework of vacuum free boundary problem of spherically symmetric compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in three dimensions. The results apply to white dwarfs and polytropes with $γ\ge 2$, for which even the linearized asymptotic stability results are not available in literature, to the best of the authors' knowledge. Detailed decay rates of perturbations are given.
The paper is concerned with the regularity of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. The aim is to investigate on a relaxed Prodi-Serrin condition in order to obtain regularity for t > 0. The most interesting aspect of the result is that no compatibility condition is required to the initial data $v_0\in J^2(\OO) J2(Ω)$.
The asymptotic stability of rarefaction wave for 1-d relaxed compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations is established. For initial data with different far-field values, we show that there exists a unique global in time solution. Moreover, as time goes to infinity, the obtained solutions are shown to converge uniformly to rarefaction wave solution of $p$-system with corresponding Riemann initial data. The proof is based on $L^2$ energy methods.
A hyperbolic relaxation of the classical Navier-Stokes problem in 2D bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions is considered. It is proved that this relaxed problem possesses a global strong solution if the relaxation parameter is small and the appropriate norm of the initial data is not very large. Moreover, the dissipativity of such solutions is established and the singular limit as the relaxation parameter tends to zero is studied

We are concerned with the three dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations driven by an additive stochastic forcing of trace class. First, for every divergence free initial condition in $L^{2}$ we establish existence of infinitely many global-in-time probabilistically strong and analytically weak solutions, solving one of the open problems in the field. This result in particular implies non-uniqueness in law. Second, we prove non-uniqueness of the associated Markov processes in a suitably chosen class of analytically weak solutions satisfying a relaxed form of an energy inequality. Tr…
We study the long-time behavior an extended Navier-Stokes system in $\R^2$ where the incompressibility constraint is relaxed. This is one of several "reduced models" of Grubb and Solonnikov '89 and was revisited recently (Liu, Liu, Pego '07) in bounded domains in order to explain the fast convergence of certain numerical schemes (Johnston, Liu '04). Our first result shows that if the initial divergence of the fluid velocity is mean zero, then the Oseen vortex is globally asymptotically stable. This is the same as the Gallay Wayne '05 result for the standard Navier-Stokes equations. When the in…
A mathematical model describing the flow of two-phase fluids in a bounded container $Ω$ is considered under the assumption that the phase transition process is influenced by inertial effects. The model couples a variant of the Navier-Stokes system for the velocity $u$ with an Allen-Cahn-type equation for the order parameter $φ$ relaxed in time in order to introduce inertia. The resulting model is characterized by second-order material derivatives which constitute the main difficulty in the mathematical analysis. Actually, in order to obtain a tractable problem, a viscous relaxation term is inc…
We study the stochastic effect on the three-dimensional inviscid primitive equations (PEs, also called the hydrostatic Euler equations). Specifically, we consider a larger class of noises than multiplicative noises, and work in the analytic function space due to the ill-posedness in Sobolev spaces of PEs without horizontal viscosity. Under proper conditions, we prove the local existence of martingale solutions and pathwise uniqueness. By adding vertical viscosity, i.e., considering the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations, we can relax the restriction on initial conditions to be only analytic i…
A widely used approach to mathematically describe the atmosphere is to consider it as a geophysical fluid in a shallow domain -- and thus to model it using classical fluid dynamical equations combined with the explicit inclusion of an ε parameter representing the small aspect ratio of the physical domain. In our previous paper [15] we proved a weak convergence theorem for the polluted atmosphere described by the Navier-Stokes equations extended by an advection-diffusion equation. We obtained a justification of the generalised hydrostatic limit model including the pollution effect described for…
In this article we consider the stability and damping problem for the 2D Boussinesq equations with partial dissipation near a two parameter family of stationary solutions which includes Couette flow and hydrostatic balance. In the first part we show that for the linearized problem in an infinite periodic channel the evolution is asymptotically stable if any diffusion coefficient is non-zero. In particular, this imposes weaker conditions than for example vertical diffusion. Furthermore, we study the interaction of shear flow, hydrostatic balance and partial dissipation. In a second part we adap…
In the paper, we establish a blow-up criterion in terms of the integrability of the density for strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations in \mathbb{R}^3 with vacuum, under the assumptions on the coefficients of viscosity: \frac{29μ}{3}>λ. This extends the corresponding results in [20, 36] where a blow-up criterion in terms of the upper bound of the density was obtained under the condition 7μ>λ. As a byproduct, the restriction 7μ>λin [12, 37] is relaxed to \frac{29μ}{3}>λfor the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations by giving a new proof of L…
Smooth solutions of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in an infinitely long pipe, equipped with the Navier-slip or Navier-Hodge-Lions boundary condition, are considered in this paper. Three main results are presented. First, when equipped with the Navier-slip boundary condition, it is shown that, $W^{1,\infty}$ axially symmetric solutions with zero flux at one cross section, must be swirling solutions: $u=(- C x_2, C x_1,0)$, and $x_3-$periodic solutions must be helical solutions: $u=(-C_1x_2,C_1x_1,C_2)$. Second, also equipped with the Navier-slip boundary condition, if the swirl or vert…
This paper deals with the Navier-Stokes system governing the evolution of a compressible barotropic fluid. We extend D. Hoff's intermediate regularity solutions framework by relaxing the integrability needed for the initial density which is usually assumed to be $L^{\infty}$. By achieving this, we are able to take into account general fourth order symmetric viscous-stress tensors with coefficients depending smoothly on the time-space variables. More precisely, in space dimensions $d=2,3$, under periodic boundary conditions, considering a pressure law $p(ρ)=aρ^γ$ whith $a>0$ respectively $γ\geq…
Global Well-Posedness of Classical Solutions to the Multi-Dimensional Degenerate Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Large Spherically Symmetric Initial Data

In this paper we study obstacles immerged in a Stokes flow with Navier boundary conditions. We prove the existence and regularity of an obstacle with minimal drag, among all shapes of prescribed volume and controlled surface area, taking into account that these shapes may naturally develop geometric features of codimension 1. The existence is carried out in the framework of free discontinuity problems and leads to a relaxed solution in the space of special functions of bounded deformation (SBD). In dimension 2, we prove that the solution is classical.

We study the effect of the fast rotation and vertical viscosity on the lifespan of solutions to the three-dimensional primitive equations (also known as the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations) with impermeable and stress-free boundary conditions. Firstly, for a short time interval, independent of the rate of rotation $|Ω|$, we establish the local well-posedness of solutions with initial data that is analytic in the horizontal variables and only $L^2$ in the vertical variable. Moreover, it is shown that the solutions immediately become analytic in all the variables with increasing-in-time (at …
